Welcome to the 2014 Environmental Events Swansea booklet which provides details of over 250 events taking place in and around Swansea from April to September. These include guided walks and cycle rides, a wide range of talks, workshops and training courses about wildlife and environmental issues, and lots of children’s activities in amazing natural settings. Most of the events are FREE or at low cost so everyone can get involved. There are several festivals to enjoy this year too: in May, it’s the Big Welsh Walk Weekend; in June there’s Wales Biodiversity Week, Bike Week and the Gower Walking Festival; in August, it’s the Gower Cycling Festival; and in September, the new Love Your Countryside Festival and the annual Swansea Open House. This booklet is produced by the City and County of Swansea’s Nature Conservation Team (contact details below) with funding from Natural Resources Wales. Please note that information on events run by other organisations is published in good faith and the City and County of Swansea cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies. Swansea has a natural environment of outstanding quality and beauty with a great diversity of landscapes and habitats including upland moorland, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, heathland, woodland, wetlands, river valleys, grasslands, sand dunes and estuaries. These habitats, together with the many parks and gardens, pockets of urban green-space and large areas of farmland, support a huge diversity of plant and animal species and make Swansea one of the most attractive and ecologically diverse counties in the UK. Love Your Countryside Festival This year, we are inviting everyone to celebrate the wonderful natural heritage, biodiversity and wild spaces of rural Swansea. The Festival will take place from Saturday 6th to Sunday 21st September and will include an exciting programme of events and activities taking place at a number of different locations. The aim of the Festival is to inspire people to get more connected to, love, value and look after their local wildlife and the countryside. The Festival is part of the City and County of Swanseaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Countryside Connections Project which is funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 (funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development) and Natural Resources Wales.
