ell, hello again! It has been a while since we last spoke.
After a glorious, most wonderful 13 months off work on maternity leave, I am back editing your Swansea Life.
Where has the time gone? It only seems like yesterday I was packing up my desk and venturing into the unknown world of motherhood. Since my son Tobi was born, I have immersed myself into the world of baby groups, spent far too much time frequenting coffee shops, admittedly eating more cake than I have eaten in my adult life, and have enjoyed spending valuable days with family and friends. It has been bliss – minus the sleepless nights, of course! Coming back to work has been filled with mixed emotions. On top of all the mum guilt, I sort of felt like I had forgotten how to work! What is my email password? Where is my key fob? Can I remember how to type? Or even worse – write? were just some of my concerns. Apart from the occasional mummy brain fog, coming back has felt as if I have never been away. And that’s all thanks to the wonderful team here at Swansea Life, our fantastic contributors, advertisers and all the good wishes and messages I have recieved from friends and readers. I must take this opportunity to thank Peter Slee, for standing in for me and doing a grand job while I have been on maternity leave. I couldn’t have wished for a better person to edit the magazine. Inside this April edition, we have all the regular features from fashion to beauty, food to home interiors – all with spring in mind. Plus we have Easter treats and eats, as well as a bumper wedding section. So sit back, put the kettle on and enjoy the read! Love,

Red carpet fashion...
STYLE A chunky chain necklace is the jewellery investment to make now Big gold chains are here again, but if the trend makes you feel more LL Cool J than just cool, it’s time for a fresh look. Perhaps try this rather more sophisticated look for £20 from Accessorize in Swansea for both the necklace and earrings that go with it.
From the Golden Globes to the Oscars, awards season brought with it a glorious parade of designer fashion. While there were many spectacular looks on the red carpets, it’s safe to say some of these outfits are not the kind of thing we can imagine wearing on a night out – we’re looking at you, Billy Porter, and your crystal-fringed mechanical hat at the Grammys. On the other hand, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found for us mere mortals, thanks to the more wearable ensembles that also featured.
styleicon In the world of fashion, there are celebrities who divide opinion (a certain family of reality TV stars, for example), then there are the famous faces who are universally admired for their personal style.
We are very much on board with the oversized bow trend including this Lipsy one shoulder bow midi dress, £60, from Next in Parc Morfa
Must haves... You’ll find polo shirts in various fabrics hung in wardrobes around the region – from West Cross to Waunarlwydd. But why? Well, they look the part and they’re incredibly versatile. Perfect for a casual option to be worn under a suit or to slip on with a pair of jeans for a night down the pub.
We love the range of smart, classic options in Burton in Swansea right now including this plain blue version at £30.

Stripes We know what each of the high street giants excels in and can point you in the right direction to find a great pair of boyfriend jeans (Zara), chic mules (Next), and statement earrings that look much more expensive than their price tag suggests (M&S of course). While these giants are no doubt dominating the high street at the moment, there’s an unexpected brand that has proven it shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to its niche of fun raincoats and simple boots. It’s a household name, but for the most part, White Stuff has stayed under the radar. We spotted this striped pinny dress in its Mumbles branch and at £55 reckon it’s one to love this month.
ON POINT ÍÍBonprix cream diamond pattern cardigan, £29.99

New formula lip colours Catrice Power plumping gel lipsticks £3.95, justmylook.com HHH
Thanks to the gel effect, these glide on easily, give a very shiny, balm-like look and do make lips look a little plumper. They don’t last too long, but they’re quick to reapply. Our favourite shade is the don’t be shy red. A lovely bargain buy. Clarins lip milky mousse £19, major department stores HHH
We really liked the fluffy mousse texture, which blends into a very pretty stain that’s matte but still hydrating. The shade milky rosewood worked well on cheeks too. One grumble: the colour shown on the packaging isn’t a great match for the shade in the tube, so swatch before you buy. Nudestix magnetic lip plush paints £24, Cultbeauty.co.uk HHH
These can be used on eyes, lips or cheeks. We loved the dusky rose sweet sangria as a lipstick and as a blush. They feel very soft and blendable, and the tint lasted quite well.
A new season brings new trends, and the 2020 catwalks certainly gave us plenty of inspiration to try something new with our makeup. Prudence Wade picks the most exciting and wearable trends, from neon eyeshadow to brushed up brows
BEAUTY TRENDS A new season means new beauty trends inspired by the spring/summer 2020 catwalks. There really is something for everyone; if you like to experiment you can play around with neon eyeshadow, or if skincare is more your thing, there’s the trend for overly dewy skin. An interesting feature of all the trends this season is how imprecise they are. Instead of hyper-complicated, pristine looks, backstage makeup artists were purposefully haphazard, giving off the impression of laid-back cool. This is a bonus for those among us who aren’t professionals, meaning you don’t need a steady hand to nail these looks. If you want to shake up your beauty routine as we head into spring, these are the trends to try...

26 SWANSEA LIFE
1. Dark lips: This is one of the more surprising of beauty trends to come off the catwalk. We’re more used to seeing red and berry lips in autumn, but they look particularly striking paired with a frothy white dress. 2. Brushed up brows: It’s good news for anyone who can’t be bothered to perfectly sculpt their eyebrows – all you have to do is brush them up, without worrying about neatness. 3. Glowy skin: This is a tricky one to nail, because you want a dewy, shiny feel without seeming too oily, but there are plenty of products to help you look catwalk ready. 4. Kohl eyes: Eyes were heavily ringed with dark kohl – the messier the better and the kind of thing you can easily recreate at home. 5. Neon eyeshadow: bright, sunny and festival-ready. Splashes of glitter elevate the neon, and once again, you can be as reckless as you like with application – no need to worry about perfection.

Following these skin ‘rules’ could be doing more harm than good, as Katie Wright discovers
Our skin is designed to have an oily layer and using harsh products can strip this back. Try lighter oils for your face
MYTHS truths
&
about skin care
While each person’s skincare routine varies somewhat, there are some basic principals that apply to practically everyone. Cleansing is essential. Treat spots with toner. Don’t use oils on oily skin. These are the common-sense guidelines we’ve all been taught to follow. But what if we told you these so-called rules are actually wrong? Katie White, founder of Re:lax skin studio, says some of the advice doled out by the skincare industry is actually harming our complexions, rather than helping them. Here, she explains five common skin myths and why we’re wrong to believe them... Myth: You need to cleanse in the morning Washing your face is the first step in most people’s morning routine, but you don’t actually need to use cleanser. “It isn’t necessary to cleanse in the morning if you are cleansing properly at night before bed,” says Katie. “As a golden skincare rule, you absolutely should be removing all your make-up and hydrating your skin before going to sleep. “If you are doing this, you can just simply splash your face with warm water in the morning.” Whether morning or night, you certainly shouldn’t be washing away all those lovely oils with soap or a foaming cleanser. “If you wake up and your skin feels greasy or still caked in product, and you feel the need to wash your face for that fresh feeling, I would recommend using lighter products before bed, rather than resorting to using a harsh cleanser in the morning to get that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling,” adds Katie. Try... Lucy Bee reviving cleansing cream, £22.50
Katie White giving a facial at Re:lax
Myth: Use harsh cleansers or toners if you have acne-prone skin When you’re suffering a breakout of spots, it may seem sensible to try to dry them out with strong treatments and toners. “Acne skin is inflamed and the skin is compromised; we shouldn’t be putting acids and alcohol on inflamed broken skin, we should be using gentle products,” says Katie. “Also, over-cleansing with a foaming cleanser that leaves skin squeaky clean will encourage further oil production, increase inflammation and can prevent skin from healing. “Look for non-stripping cleansers, anti-inflammatory toners and products that are kind to skin.” Try... Sebamed clear face facial toner, £5.69 Dr Hauschka facial toner, £25.50
Myth: Don’t use oils if you have oily or acne-prone skin Similarly, when your skin is oily, the last thing you want to do is add more oil into the mix, right? Wrong. “Oiliness can be caused by many different reasons, including stress, diet and genetics, but it can also be caused by lack of hydration,” says Katie. “Our skin is designed to have an oily layer called the ‘acid mantle’, this is our first line of defence. Using harsh products can strip this back, so then the skin sends signals to the sebaceous glands to
produce more oil. Using oils can have the opposite effect; it can decrease oil production as the skin recognises it is hydrated.” Katie recommends using lighter oils like jojoba, marula or squalene. Try...
Nakin natural anti-ageing revitalising face oil, £22 D’Alchemy intense skin repair oil, £50.80
Myth: Extractions get rid of blackheads Love them or hate them, extractions are a part of many facial treatments, when the therapist uses a tool or their fingers to squeeze blackheads from your pores. “Blackheads form when oil that comes through pores to keep skin hydrated, oxidises with air and turns black,” Katie explains. “By squeezing/extracting, some oil comes out and some is pushed further down into the epidermis. “This causes inflammation and can push bacteria into the skin – perfect spot forming ingredients!” The best way to tackle blackheads, she advises, is with acids such as salicylic or beta hydroxy acids, or using clays. Annie Cartwright Over 40? It may be ‘tweakment’ time...
Annie Cartwright MSc, RGN, IP advanced aesthetic nurse practitioner
Director of Skin and Face Clinics, Annie Cartwright, gives her advice on the latest trends in beauty treatments for people over 40
I
predict that 2020 will see two big treatment trends that are already starting to emerge – the rising demand for jawline fillers along with ‘tweakments’ (it’s the new beauty buzzword). If you are middle-aged you may already know that important changes are starting to happen in the structure of your face that can leave you looking more tired or sad, and this change does not reflect how you feel on the inside. When this ageing process starts, people often think that if they go for a lip filler treatment they will instantly look more glamorous and achieve a more youthfullooking appearance. However, while very subtle lip rejuvenation techniques can have a beneficial effect on how the face is changing as people age, it’s important to remember that this is not the only tool in the beauty kit. I advise all my clients in this age range to consider having a series of small adjustments or ‘tweakments’ to freshen their look and an experienced practitioner will be able to help you identify what ‘tweakments’ are right for you. Volume changes to the face, over time, will manifest in a different way for everyone, so you will need someone with a proven track record in advanced facial rejuvenation. Someone who can establish what is concerning you, how you feel when you look in the mirror and implement an approach that provides a more holistic rejuvenation. Having a small series of adjustments or ‘tweakments’ may mean your practitioner will use multiple syringes to give you a refreshed, natural look, but without radically changing your appearance or making you look like you have had a major make-over. The point is that these small adjustments help to enhance your natural features and keep everything in harmony; a number of small changes to provide an overall improvement. For example, as we age, some people start
28 SWANSEA LIFE
to lose the vertical height of their jaw and so jaw and chin augmentation is useful where there is poor definition and the chin is smaller or set back. Reinforcing the structure of the jaw is now possible with some of the stronger and longer-lasting fillers, improving the perceived age and attractiveness of the face. The treatment options for certain lower face, jaw and chin improvements were previously only possible with major surgery, but can now be tweaked with dermal filler. However, this treatment must be provided by a competent medical professional and their qualifications should be verified by checking their professional register online.

REAL WOMEN, WINNING LOOKS W ITH
C H R I S
H O W E L LS
Swansea-based international makeup artist and winner of the National Federation of Hairdressing’s Welsh Makeup Artist of the Year award, Chris Howells, gives a Swansea woman a new look oe is a multi award-winning permanent makeup artist based in Swansea. I have been lucky enough to make up this gorgeous face many, many times. Not one to ever shy away from colour, we have created quite a few beautiful looks together. Zoe reached out to me recently to create a showstopping modern look that she can use as a headshot for an upcoming permanent makeup judging panel that she is part of. After a light cleansing with Bioderma Micellar water, I started with a light spritz of Elizabeth Arden eight-hour hydrating mist. I massaged this lightly in followed by Bobbi Brown hydrating water fresh cream. I then applied a single pump of Rodial bee venom eye serum to the orbital bone. This really helps to depuff reduce dark circles and hydrate the delicate eye area. I usually start with the complexion, but because I was creating a stronger eye I started with The serum, ensuring that any drop out can be removed before working on the complexion. I applied Urban Decay primer potion as a base on the eyelids and then, using the Kosas cosmetics cheek colour in 8th muse with the eye finishing brush, created a wide look concentrating the colour on the crease and blending out. Then, taking the all-over eye brush I applied Laura Mercier Caviar stick in sapphire all over the lid. Then I applied Morphe 35V palette rich blue all over and blended it into the crease. I then took Juvia’s Place Palette and applied an electric green tone. I highlighted the “ball” of the eye for a modern spotlight look. Taking Anastasia Beverly Hills brow wiz, I groomed the brows up and out before using Eylure coloured brow mascara to fill in any sparse areas and create a fabulous fluffy brow. I also applied Victoria Beckham highlighter just under the brow. Taking the crease brush and sapphire caviar stick I applied this tight to the bottom lash line and blended really well. Using NYX black liquid liner I created a dramatic wing

to the upper lash line and Urban Decay noir black liner along the lower waterline. I then applied Lash Unlimited in No8 lashes to finish off the eyes. Touch-In-Sol feels like honeymoon skin base was my go-to primer using the Walford-RichardsDesigns flat- topped foundation brush (which also happens to be Janet Jackson’s go to foundation brush), and Cover FX powerplay foundation, buffing into the skin creating a flawless complexion. Then I took the concealer brush and Cover FX powerplay concealer in to the under-eye area and corrected any slight imperfections. Using the angled contour brush and Kosas Cosmetics highlight/blush duo in 8th Muse, I applied the cheek colour to the apples of the cheeks and blended the edges seamlessly. This colour really gives a healthy glow. Taking Ben NYE illuminating banana powder, I set Zoe’s complexion using a gentle press and roll motion with the superbly soft powder brush. On the lips I used Bite Beauty outburst lip stain in strawberry froze, applying YSL holographic lip gloss in arcade pink to give the lip a pop of lusciousness. Then using the cream highlight from the blush duo and the angled powder brush, I applied this to the high points of Zoe’ face, her cheekbones, the bridge of her nose and a little on her forehead and chin to enhance the illumination. I finished off by using Tamara Eccleston’s range of SHOW hair products to create gorgeous bouncy curls on Zoe.

Natalia says My hair is very heavy and is very difficult to style. I do colour it myself, but I’m never really happy with the colour. My colour tends to fade very quickly making it look washed out. The main thing for me is how flat it is. I want to have full bouncy hair that I can do things with easily. The team at Lara Johnson was really great and chatted with me for ages. They really listened! I was a little worried that doing a make over would mean that they would want to cut lots of hair off. But they didn’t, they put more hair in and worked with extensions. I love it! It’s so easy to style and looks so healthy. The extensions are secured with a tape, so were quick to put in and can be moved and used again in the future.
Lara Johnson Lifestyle team says The most important part of any hairstyle is that we listen to not only what the client wants but also what suits them, that not only visually but also how confident they are with styling their hair based time and ability. Natalia is happy with blow drying and is confident with tongs and straighteners. Her ideal hair is full and glamorous. The first stage was to even out Natalia’s colour. It was a mix of old colours that made it look flat and lifeless. We evened it out and worked with rich and warm tones from the Wella professional range. Then we focused on maintaining the look. We taught Natalia how to use our home prescription service. The next stage was to create the volume and shape that Natalia wanted. We worked with Beauty Works slimline tape pieces, which integrate directly onto the root using lightweight tape. The brand suits Natalia’s lifestyle - so giving thickness and fullness that is easy to maintain. It can be removed easily and reapplied without damaging her natural hair. We reshaped the style with some soft layers that helped give body and fullness and 32 32 SWANSEA SWANSEALIFE LIFE

finished the look by giving movement with ghd curve tongs and lightly applied Sebastian Professional sublimate styling cream to give it shine and hold.

fitness goals plant-based diet... does it work
&
Reducing meat and dairy doesn’t have to dampen your training efforts providing you do some homework. Abi Jackson talks to experts If pursuing fitness goals, and eating more plant-based, are both high on your agenda, you might be wondering how well the two fit together. Veganism among athletes has been a hot topic lately. Last year’s Netflix documentary, The Game Changers, saw Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, Lewis Hamilton and nutritional scientists tackle ‘misconceptions’ around meat-heavy diets being essential for strength and performance. Various sports stars have also highlighted their own plant-based (or low-meat and dairy, as the case may be) regimes. Tennis ace Venus Williams switched to a raw vegan diet for health reasons – although she’s since said she now includes occasional animal products alongside being largely veggie. Footballer Jermain Defoe is “virtually vegan”, while a number of elite endurance athletes follow plant-based plans. With pressure to reduce animalproduct consumption greater than ever too, where does this sit with our fitness efforts?
we have associated meat with athletic performance, and from a commercial point of view there has been more money to be made by encouraging animal products.” And commercial interest often leads to biases in research too. Mitchell says the “vast majority of research” has been “geared for animal products which can then be commercialised”. That’s changing now, as trends shift. “Over the next few years, we will see more research coming out looking at meat-free diets and sport,” he adds.
34 SWANSEA LIFE
And when done well, plant-based diets are increasingly associated with a host of health benefits, as NHS-registered nutritionist James Collier – co-founder of Huel, a ‘complete nutrition brand’, which focuses on 100% vegan, sustainably and ethically-sourced products (uk.huel.com) – points out. “The number one point is planning: you’ll need to plan ahead in terms of shopping and food prep,” Collier advises. “Choose a varied range of foods, including a variety of fruit, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds. This is vital to ensure a good intake of all amino acids, essential fatty acids, fibres, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.”
‘Food first’ approach
Busting the meat myth It’s easy to see how iron and protein-rich meaty diets became synonymous with athletic prowess, but we haven’t always been such committed carnivores. “If we look back in history, we can see certain athletic groups have had, if not plant-based, then very low animal product diets,” says performance nutritionist Nigel Mitchell, author of new book The Plant-Based Cyclist (£14.99), who works with leading supplement brand Healthspan, which has an Elite Nutrition range targeting fitness fans (healthspan.co.uk). “It’s suggested the diets of gladiators were predominantly plant-based, [focused] around grains such as spelt and barley. The traditional food of sumo wrestlers is based around a vegetable stew called chanko-nabe; this would contain tofu and may have some seafood as well. “I think the main issue has been cultural and commercial,” Mitchell adds. “Culturally,
?
Get the basics right first So, how does this apply to amateur athletes and fitness fans? First, before you even start thinking about anything else, it’s important to look at your overall nutrition. A lot of the time, if you’re struggling with energy dips during or after workouts, this says more about your diet in general, rather than whether you’re packing in enough recovery shakes and protein bars. “All too often, people will just cut out animal foods without thinking about replacing with plant-based alternatives. On a macronutrient level, the main thing is protein and also omega fats. These can be supplied from plants, but need thinking about,” says Mitchell.
Collier and Mitchel both agree we should aim for a “food first approach”. Mitchell suggests focusing on high-quality ingredients where possible and cooking from scratch, as this is often more nutritious (not to mention less added salt, sugar and sweeteners) than relying too much on pre-prepared processed products. And while protein may be the main fitness nutrition buzzword, be careful about those carb-bashing fads. “Ensure [you get] enough carbohydrate for the exercise and for recovery, this is to feed the brain and muscle,” says Mitchell. “And keep the body well hydrated.” Collier adds: “Fats are often overlooked in fitness: it’s imperative to ensure a good intake of omega-3s, omega-6s and monounsaturates daily. Omega-6s and monounsaturates are relatively easy to obtain if you’re consuming oils, nuts and seeds. However, for adequate omega-3 intake, you’ll need to include flaxseeds, chia or hemp seeds or algae foods. “As many plant proteins aren’t complete proteins, you’ll need to combine protein sources to ensure adequate intake of all essential amino acids. For example, consume beans or lentils with rice,” he continues. “Base meals around slow-release carbs like granary bread, sweet potato, new potatoes, oats, basmati rice or wholewheat pasta.”
What about shakes and supplements? Supplements can be important for plant-based eaters. “Some important nutrients you’ll need to watch out for include vitamin B12, vitamin D and choline (vitamin B4). Vegans should definitely consume B12-fortified foods or have a daily supplement. Choline is rich in some seeds and grains, like oats and flaxseed, but if you don’t consume enough of these, then again a supplement may need to be considered,” says Collier. As to whether you need that fitness shake, “this is a simple question” with a “complex answer”, says Mitchell. “This depends on a lot of variables, such as what do we mean as recovery? For me, this is about the athlete being able to perform again when they need to, so we can consider recovery from a metabolic and physiological perspective. A shake can be a simple and convenient way of providing some protein and carbohydrates – as a rule of thumb, we tend to suggest something that is supplying about 20g of protein and about 1g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight. “However, this can be provided by food,” he adds. “Once the shake or food is broken down to the base nutrients, they will be doing the same job in the body. For people following a plant-based diet, this could be a pint of soya milk and a large banana, or it could be plant-based protein in a shake. The main pitfall to look for is going too long without taking nutrition after hard training – this will delay recovery.” It’s about listening to your own body and looking at your needs, rather than blindly following trends or buying whatever Instagram tells you to. Final word of advice? “Enjoy your food,” says Mitchell, “and don’t overcomplicate things.” SWANSEA LIFE 35

DR. CHARLOTTE
Putting your best foot forward Are your feet sandal ready? Swansea Life doctor and Sketty GP Dr Charlotte Jones offers some advice on caring for your feet
As I was packing away my ridiculously high shoes and a packet of Angel Feet for a little break away to escape this very strange weather, I noted that April 2020 is hosting “Walk to work “day on the 6th and “On your feet Britain” day on the 24th . This got me thinking about some common conditions that can inhibit you putting your best foot forward. n Osteoarthritis of the foot This is classically pain, stiffness, restricted movement and sometimes swelling affecting any of the joints/bones in the foot. It is worse after a period of rest/inactivity but does ease up a little as you walk around. It can cause deformity of the foot over time. It is really important to keep your foot/ ankle flexible with regular exercise and losing weight if you are overweight. Physiotherapy can often have a significant impact and is readily available through Morriston and Singleton hospitals where a walk in service runs from 8.30am-10am Monday to Friday. Also, podiatry can help – there is a walk in service in the Port Talbot Resource Centre, Moor Road, Port Talbot on Monday to Friday from 8.45am-11.30am and 1.10pm-3.30pm or you can ring 0300 300 0024. Surgery or an injection may be indicated to ease symptoms and we are lucky in Swansea to have some excellent foot and ankle specialists who your GP can refer you too. n Bunions This is where the base joint on the big toe deviates away from a straight position. They can become very deformed and make it difficult to wear shoes as well as cause pain. Sometimes pain relief/cushioned pads under the joint can help. For others though, they need an injection to ease the pain or even an operation. This is not a particularly pleasant operation and only offered on the NHS under certain circumstances but you can expect to be off your feet for a few weeks.
n Plantar fasciitis This is where the plantar tissue of the heel/sole becomes inflamed. It can cause exquisite tenderness and patients often tell me that ice or walking around on cold surfaces or rubbing their foot back and forth over a broom handle/other cylindrical object helps. Painkillers often don’t do much to help. Specialist insoles that you can buy in many chemists or on line can help and don’t forget the availability of the NHS podiatry service. Occasionally, symptoms are so bad that your doctor will offer an injection. n Gout Anyone who has ever had gout will tell you that it is exquisitely painful. It comes on suddenly and can cause extreme pain weight bearing. The skin over the affected joint is often red, hot and shiny. Some foods, alcohol, being overweight, certain conditions/medications and not taking enough water on board are known for precipitating attacks of gout. Gout is usually treated with a course of painkillers or colchicine or steroids. Your doctor/nurse may recommend a blood test and if you get recurrent attacks, they may also suggest you take medication to try and prevent the gout crystals causing destruction of the joint. n Neuropathic foot pain This is pain caused by damage to the nerve endings in the feet. Patients describe a burning sensation that extends from toes up the leg to varying levels. It can be very distressing and there are many causes including diabetes, trauma, alcohol, spinal problems etc. Patients often find themselves walking on cool surfaces to try and ease the pain but there are quite effective medications available for this so if you think you have this, then see your GP or specialist nurse. As Leonardo Da Vinci said: “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art” SWANSEA LIFE 37

Amelia and Ifan Amelia Carter, from Port Talbot a science teacher at Ysgol Plasmawr, marries Ifan Hall Williams in a winter wonderland... Photos: robbie-lee-photography.com
How did you and Ifan meet? We met online in 2014 and, after a few dates, we realised that we could have met a few years earlier at a university house party of a mutual friend, but we never did! We bought a house together in 2015 and we have lived in Splott since. I am head of biology at Ysgol Plasmawr, Cardiff and Ifan is a freelance audio visual technician based in Cardiff. Tell us about your engagement? We got engaged on a weekend in London. We were strolling around Covent Garden after a West End show. It was a lovely warm evening and Ifan surprised me by popping the question. He’d asked my father’s
permission earlier on that week and had bought me a gorgeous engagement ring which is just perfect and exactly what I would have chosen for myself. What made you decide on your venue? During August 2018, we viewed a number of venues but chose Peterstone Court as we regularly travel through the Brecon Beacons when we visit Ifan’s mum in Llangollen. We loved the feel of the house and were taken by the idea of a crisp, winter wedding looking out at Pen y Fan. After looking at pictures of its Christmas decorations we thought that a Christmas wedding would be even more special.
Mairwen Mackintosh, our wedding venue stylist, did a wonderful job from the flowers to the centrepieces and all the candles and additional accessories which made the day personal to us. Catrin James played the harp during the ceremony and I walked down the aisle to one of my favourite Welsh songs Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn, which was also played during my parents wedding. Our ceremony was bilingual as I’m a proud Welsh speaker and I wanted to say my vows in Welsh. The build-up! Along with the bridesmaids and mother-of-

the-bride, I had my hair done by Jess Mac from Braid and Blush in Brecon. Jess was so kind and helpful from day one and our hair stayed beautiful all day. Our makeup was done by one of the bridesmaids, my cousin Kati Evans, who has her own business in Port Talbot – Beauty by Kati. I was so grateful for all her hard work on the day and in the preparations running up to the wedding – including nails and eyelashes being done on Christmas Day! My Sincerity dress was from Perfection Bridal in Cardiff. Susanne and the team could not have been more lovely or helpful. I visited the shop in September 2018 – the first bridal shop I’d been to – and bought the dress on that day as they had a great selection and I knew the dress was ‘the’ one! My mother had a spectacular fascinator made by Embellish Millinery by Yolanda Jane in Pontarddulais at very short notice during Christmas week. Yolanda was also amazing and so helpful. Tell us about the day Our evening celebrations included the Apple Tree Theory band and the Boutique Disco, both of which we thoroughly recommend. We had some excellent action shots and vs from Boutique Disco which captured the party in full swing. Robert Lee, our photographer, is Ifan’s friend from university who is currently living in Australia. We are thrilled with the photographs and were so grateful to him for his hard work on the day, but also for how he put us at ease. Our first dance was to ‘At Last’ by Etta James. It was hard choosing one song to dance to as we have so many favourites together, but we felt that this song is such a classic and it was in keeping with the vibe of the entire day. ...and your honeymoon? A mini-moon in Edinburgh immediately following the wedding with our main

honeymoon planned for the west coast of America this summer which we are really looking forward to! How did you feel when you first saw Ifan at the altar? I was very happy because he looked very happy! I felt excited and ready to marry him. We’d been planning the wedding for 18 months and I was overwhelmed by how fast time had gone. I felt all my little worries about the day and how I looked disappear as it was just about me and him. What other advice would you give to other brides planning their wedding? Make the most of the planning process – go for lunches with family and bridesmaids and enjoy the whole process. Try not to stress over little things. If it’s important it will get done. Make sure to book a honeymoon or minimoon soon after the wedding so that the two of you can celebrate straight away! What was the best moment of the day? Getting married! The ceremony was just as we wanted as we had two lovely readings from my cousin and Ifan’s sister. I particularly enjoyed the wedding breakfast as it was a nice opportunity to sit together and take in the room watching our family and friends enjoying themselves. Ifan began to enjoy this part after he’d said his speech! We were also lucky to have stayed at the venue the night before and had a family sing song around the piano, singing a few Christmas carols. Ifan’s mum is a talented musician and songwriter – she played a song which she’d written for us and it was such a special moment for us both. Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently? No, we had the most wonderful day with our closest family and friends. We loved every single minute!

Jan Lima Flowers created this beautiful bouquet with roses, lisianthus, eryngium and eucalyptus leaves for Jade and Tom Meechan’s wedding held in a tipi at a farm in Usk. Florist Blooming Belles comes highly recommended by Katrina and Liam Jones, who said the flowers at their wedding venue, Clyde Farm, which overlooks Mumbles, were a “highlight” of their day. The stunning pink roses and gypsophila finished off their cake in such a sweet way!
Gemma and Cameron Robb called on florist Eve Francesca Designs to bring their colourful vision to life. Their combination of roses, fruit and pampas grass created something truly unique and in keeping with the mystical woodlands of Fairyhill Gower. PHOTOS: www.richardsavage.co.uk

Aled and Rebecca Adams A relaxed and romantic day in the Gower countryside is what Aled and Rebecca Adams from Llanelli wanted. And that’s what the 20-year-old children’s pastor and his 24-year-old graphic designer bride got at The King Arthur. Peter Slee has been to meet them to talk about their big day...

How did you and your husband meet? We met in our church – a 21st-century church in Llanelli – where we both volunteered on the youth team. The more time we spent together the closer we became. We used to spend hours talking to each other after the group had finished. I can safely say I married my best friend! What’s your engagement story? I knew something was up when Aled was actually organising a day out! He checked the weather, booked a table at the restaurant and was ready on time. We drove to Rhosilli Beach, had food at The Worm’s Head Hotel and walked down to the beach. Aled wanted to take my attention away from him getting the ring out, so he told me to look at the view while he took a photo. I turned around to mess the photo up as a joke, but when I turned around he was on one knee. He gave a sweet speech and asked me to marry him. It’s one of our favourite beaches. Where is your engagement ring from? Did your husband choose it himself? My engagement ring is from H Samuel. Aled had some help from my sister, Rachel and my mam, but he picked the ring. I love it, it’s so simple and classic. How long did you have to plan your wedding and was it enough time? We had just over a year to plan the wedding. It was enough time, but it always felt like we’d missed something. Our wedding coordinator, Rhian, was amazing every step of the way along with our family and friends.
I married my best friend!

Why did you choose your dress? Which dress did you wear? I had an appointment at Pleser Bridal during a Jesus Peiro Trunk Show. His dresses are incredible. I went into the appointment with a style in mind, but the first few dresses I selected didn’t feel like ‘me’. That’s when Marian selected a dress for me to try. It just felt right, like a breath of fresh air – I loved the simple design and the back of the dress was so different. I knew that was for me.
Why did you choose your venue? Where did you get married? Would you recommend the venue? We had the ceremony in our church in Llanelli then travelled to The King Arthur Hotel in Gower for our reception. We’ve been to a few weddings there, including my sister’s wedding and it’s the most beautiful venue. It has such a cosy environment that it was perfect for us. On top of that it serves some incredible food, provides excellent customer service and Aled loves that it has Gower Gold on tap. We would definitely recommend it to anyone getting married. What was your first dance song? Our first dance was to ‘Everything’ by Michael Buble. I love Buble songs and Aled just likes dancing. How many bridesmaids did you have? Where did you buy your bridesmaids dresses from? I had two bridesmaids, my sister Rachel and Aled’s sister Eleri. Their dresses were from Phase Eight, I loved the colour on them. They looked beautiful. What was your colour scheme or theme? The colour scheme was merlot and blush. The flowers helped bring the colours into the reception and the church ceremony. We had fun with the table names... with Aled being ginger we decided to name each table after a famous ginger. We even bought face masks of them all. Looking out at the room and seeing Geri Halliwell, Neil Jenkins and Rupert Grint was quite fun! What was the best moment of your wedding day? Our favourite moment was saying our vows in front of our friends and family. It was such a special moment and it meant so much to us both. What was the funniest thing that happened on the day? Aled’s brother, who is usually quite quiet and introverted, started busting some moves on the dance floor in the evening. None of us have seen that side of him before, it took us all by surprise!
What would you tell other brides planning their wedding? Accept that not everything will go as you planned, but know that as long as your loved ones are with you and you say your vows your day will be nothing short of perfect. You’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet so be prepared with plasters and flat shoes for the evening. Did you discover any amazing suppliers that you’d like other bride’s to know about? Martin Ellard from My Big Day Photos was incredible. He was one of the first suppliers we booked. He photographed my sister’s wedding and the photos were amazing so we knew we wanted him to photograph ours. From hair and makeup first thing in the morning, straight through to the dance floor well into the night, he made us feel totally comfortable and relaxed. Eve from Eve Francesca Design is simply amazing. Her flowers went above and beyond what I had imagined. We had compliments on them all day and people were even asking to take the centerpieces home with them. The whole team at Pleser Bridal were brilliant, from our initial appointment through to the fittings, they were so friendly and professional. I can’t thank Marian enough for picking out my dress, she saw exactly what I was looking for when I didn’t even know what I wanted. Looking back, is there anything you’d change? We wouldn’t change anything. It was just perfect! What was the most stressful thing about planning your wedding? Like I said earlier, it’s easy to start worrying about things you may have missed. But as long as you have a checklist and you keep referring back to it, you’ll cover everything. Finally; What three words would you use to describe your wedding day? The best day

Chocoholics, you will love this recipe! It’s so simple to make, just a few ingredients, a little mixing and layering and hey presto, you have a lovely, gooey, chocolatey dessert. There’s no baking required, just an hour or more in the fridge and your all set to serve! Although we consider cheesecake to be something of an American creation it actually originated in Greece, where they would pound cheese into a thick paste and sweeten it with honey then set it into a crust. The Americans took the cheesecake to another level by their invention of cream cheese and the New York cheesecake was born. Adorned with all sorts of toppings from oreos to strawberries, pecans to limes, you can get almost any flavour these days, while chocolate remains in the top three flavours along with strawberry and lemon. Mine has an Italian influence by using mascarpone in the mixture which gives an even more luxurious, creamy and slightly tart taste. YOU WILL NEED A 23cm springform cake pan. ingredients (serves 2) For the base: ■ 300g digestive biscuits blitzed in a food processor ■ 130g melted butter

there but this is a treat and will give you at least 12 generous portions. Combine the crushed biscuits and melted butter and push into the base of your cake pan. Best to use non stick or give it a rub with a little butter first. Chill in the fridge whilst you make the chocolate mixture. Melt the chocolate and allow to cool a little, whip up the double cream and in a separate bowl combine together the mascarpone, cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla then add in the chocolate and then combine with the cream. Make sure it is thoroughly combined then smooth over the biscuit base. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

in with the new Great food in a relaxed atmosphere? Peter Slee seeks out a place that is bang on target
I
’m asked almost daily by strangers where I eat ‘out of choice’. People want the answer, I’ve learned, to be somewhere really posh. The kind of place that wraps foie gras around obscure animal innards and serves it on a slate plate. But while I do love some occasional pomp and faff, it is an odd sort of creature who wants this every time they go out. The Grove in Narberth continues to be held dear to my heart because, well, because I just absolutely adore it there for all kinds of reasons not least because its food and service is always stupendous. But there's no denying its main Fernery Restaurant is pretty upmarket. The sort of place that helps fuel high-end laundry businesses, its chandeliered dining room laid with tablecloths so thick they could double as sails for ocean-going yachts. Of course it has its place. But, if you are after something a little more relaxed, its new'ish Artisan Rooms eatery is worth seeking out delivering up, as it does, a changeable feast of goodies. Its rationale is simple: they cook using the best of Welsh ingredients serving up great food, simply prepared in a relaxed dining room overlooking The Grove's rather beautiful garden terrace. Importantly, it is also rather cheaper than its big brother next door neighbour.
Things I wanted from the menu but couldn’t find room for included: smoked salmon and herring roe, chicken and wild garlic and Pembrokeshire rib-eyed steak. I went for a starter of Hafod Cheddar souffle with celery and walnut ( £11), a precision engineered number, slightly bronzed in all the right places and filled with that punchy, paunchy cheese. Delicious. Yet this was merely the support act. My main of risotto, pumpkin and sage(£18) was an impeccably seasoned plate, full of softness and just the right amount of acidity and piquancy, topped with the sunshine promise of a duck's egg. You scoop up the risotto and egg tucking in with the certain knowledge that eventually you will mix one with the other. Across the table from me, lamb suet pudding with creamed potato and while, perhaps, not the most photogenic of dishes still came earthy, unxious, confidently seasoned and rich. Desserts are a friendly bayonet pointed at the chest, demanding cheery surrender. There’s a super light white chocolate panacotta with rhubarb and a ginger sorbet (£9) for me and a custard tart with a cassis sorbet for Mrs S. Look, it's cold outside! So, yes, another winner in the arsenal of The Grove's line up of offerings.
Even when it’s good value, restaurants can still be expensive. So why waste that money on the designer’s bill, or for battalions of waiters just so one spotty teenager can ferret about in your lap placing your napkin there, or another can physically take you to the loo when all you needed was directions? What more of us want these days, are places that deliver the good stuff with the minimum of fuss and with narrow menus. And we want to wear what we choose while doing it, not comply with someone else’s dress code. We will define what “special occasion” means, thank you very much. This is a place with heart. It’s run by people who are determined to win over their customers by knocking out plate after plate of the things they love. It’s both utterly comforting and yet still familiar and not too grand, but with unexpected temptations on its regularlychanging menu and with the smiliest of service from attentive, friendly staff who know just when to fill up your water and when to leave you alone. Best of all, it is serving up the kind of classy, appealing food you’d like to eat repeatedly, and at a more reasonable price than you might perhaps expect.

Glamour, fun and feathers all feature in this year’s hottest looks – but first and foremost, individual style rules
TRANSFORM YOUR
If you want your interiors to look fashionable then you need to know what’s hot for the home! This year, there’s full-on colour, as well as more pared-back looks with natural materials, alongside some key must-haves – love seats, dressing tables, and glamorous headboards. But, beware, trends should be followed selectively rather than religiously, because a successful home is where your own taste rules. Create your own space with these brilliant buys...
Feel the love Love seats are the ultimate giant armchair for those who love to stretch out and get comfy, or if you’re feeling romantic you can snuggle up together. “They’re also a great space-saving size for those who are tight on room,” says Claire Wilks, from the Sofa.com team. “Velvet is one of the most popular upholstery choices, ramping up the luxe effect.” ÏÏMonroe loveseat, in orchid cotton matt velvet, £2,390, Sofa.com
Explore YOUR wild style If you’re over that hot, steamy jungle look – all palm prints and tropical colours – the latest, pared-back desert look could be just for you. Bold tribal prints, an earthy palette, natural materials and vibrant animal prints are combined in the new George Home collection.

Undertaking a home renovation project can be daunting. And after months of mess, quite often the only thing you want to do is enjoy your new living space. But just before you pop the kettle on take one final look around. Is there anything missing from your space? Anything that will take your finished project from beautiful to stunning? You can’t see it, or feel it, but fragrance adds character to the home. Candles are fabulous for bringing together smells and ambience. They work especially well in bathrooms and dining areas and can truly create a mood. For an instant injection of your favourite smell, wax melts are currently the go-to. Like candles, they add ambience, but they release fragrance quicker. However, wax burners do require a little TLC and regular cleaning. Diffusers are perfect for subtle background smells. While they are not as strong as their burning counterparts, they give off a constant aroma - just remember to turn the reeds every few days. When it comes to scents, a one-smell fits all formula doesn’t need to apply to your home. You may want something floral in the living areas, but something a little more relaxing – such as a lavender scent – in the bedroom. Have a play around to see which suits. Like perfume or aftershave, go for the fragrances you like first and see how they work in a real setting. There are no hard and fast rules, so anything goes. Moving on from fragrance to flowers, and house plants are enjoying a massive resurgence. As we fast approach spring, this trend will not only continue but will evolve with fresh
blooms being brought into the mix. Whether you choose a shop-bought bunch or a hand-selected pick from your local flower market, be sure to show them off to their full potential in a striking vase. Choose wisely and the vase will look great as a standalone feature, even when the blooms have been shipped out to the compost heap. Alongside vases, what other decorations are missing from your living space? Ornaments, trinkets, whatever you want to call them, are carefully curated interior treasures you cherish. They may remind you of a family member, a favourite holiday destination or even a career you once loved. And while you might be tempted to hide them away, worried they won’t fit into your new aesthetic, embrace them. Adding personality to your home is never wrong. Find new ways to use them. Forget the traditional, round the fireplace mantra, and pop your favourite pieces in the bathroom, place them under a glass cloche or use as a bookend.

April at altitude
With Joseph Atkin, head gardener at Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire
Spring has never been so welcome as this year. Its early arrival has allowed Aberglasney to thrive in the mild conditions. In many ways April at the gardens can be the most exciting time of the year. There are few of us who don’t love spring gardens with their fanfare of early bulbs and blossoms. One area of Aberglasney that looks fantastic this time of year is the alpine garden. The array of small bulbs and cushion-shaped plants make for a wonderful display. These plants are often ideal for home gardening despite coming from the far reaches of the world at high altitude.
Ajuga reptans ‘Pink Surprise’
Rhododendron hippophaeoides ‘Haba Shan’
This wonderful little plant always causes a stir. It is related to the common bugle which we probably all have in our gardens. This pink form is a real showstopper and a much better garden plant. It forms lovely neat matts of green tinged purple leaves with large heads of soft pink flowers. It combines beautifully with bulbs and other spring flowering plants and works in any sunny situation. We grow it in a spring border at the front edge where it compliments tulips. It seems happy in sun or part shade and grows in most soils although it does seem to like very fertile conditions where it performs even better.
This wonderful new small leaved Rhododendron is a great all rounder for most gardens. It is happy in the sun or shade and is very hardy. It comes from a mountain in China which is a good 4,000 meters high, so toughness is not a problem for this plant. Unlike many Rhododendron it is also very wind tolerant which can be very handy in coastal areas. We grow it in several different positions at Aberglasney and it always thrives. What is extra special about this plant is that despite it being a new plant introduction, it seems like it will make an excellent garden plant. The rich blue flowers over its grey, green leaves are also very effective in a number of situations.
n Height = 20cm n Spread = 50cm n Position/Aspect = Any sunny n Soil = Any fertile n Pest and diseases = No problems in the ground n Style = Rock garden, stone wall, herbaceous border, alpine display
Muscari ‘Ocean magic’ Today there is a wonderful section of these grape hyacinth relatives which are much better garden plants than their parents. They don’t seed around and unlike many bulbs will come back each year. ‘Ocean magic’ is a wonderful multi toned blue colour with a good clean appearance. We grow it in a gravel border where the colour really shows up against the dull stone. All of these new Muscari combine well with other spring flowering plants. One of our favourites is to combine them with Pulsatilla. n Height = 20cm n Spread = 20cm n Position/Aspect = Sunny n Soil = Free draining n Pest and diseases = No real problems n Style = Rock garden small space, spring potted display, herbaceous or cottage garden 90 SWANSEA LIFE

As focus on the wellbeing benefits of plants and nature grows, RHS scientist Alistair Griffiths talks to Hannah Stephenson about mindfulness corners
Creating
mindfulness in your garden RHS
director of science, Professor Alistair Griffiths has done a lot of research into wellbeing and
gardens. Now, he’s teamed up with award-winning garden designer Matt Keightley to help more of us dig into these benefits with a new book, RHS Your Wellbeing Garden, in which the pair offer a range of ideas for using greenery and gardens to distract from the stresses of life, whether it be butterflies, birdsong, or sensory and scented plants. “I hope this book will say, ‘Listen people, you are part of nature’,” Griffiths explains. “We’ve done lots of work into how we look after birds and bees, but we haven’t really looked at what a garden means for our own health.” There’s lots of evidence that being in nature is good for us – so why not create spaces specifically for this purpose? The idea is to create a peaceful corner, surrounded by plants, where you can practice some mindfulness. A fan of checking in for a “body health check”, Griffiths suggests: “Breathe more deeply and think about the different parts of your body and working through them to check your health status, surrounded by nature. “It’s about being in the present, backed by evidence which shows that if you spend a little bit of time just stopping and thinking about yourself and how you are feeling, it helps to be surrounded by the right elements of your
natural habitat. “There’s a worry that we’ll get ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’, where the less nature we have within our habitat has a negative effect on our anxiety and stress.” Curious to ‘grow’ some nature-inspired wellbeing or create a garden mindfulness corner of your own? Read on for Griffiths’ top tips...
What should you include? “Key elements of life, like shelter and water, are relevant to a mindfulness corner, which is trying to create a refuge but with an ability to view outside of that,” says Griffiths.
Where do you start? “Create an area of seating where you can sit alone, or with friends and family,” he suggests. Try to make room for plants which attract butterflies, bees and wildlife to distract you from everyday life. “Even on a balcony, if you can look at your wider view and see a wider part of nature. Picture-frame those,” adds Griffiths. “If there are trees in the city you can help to create a design to picture-frame that bit, like a window to nature.”
Think about water It’s good to have an element of water, where you have the ability to see and hear the water and look at its reflectiveness, he advises.
And if you only have a balcony, or no outdoor space at all? “Bring nature indoors,” says Griffiths. “You can make a mindfulness corner in your house, bringing greenery into those spaces, which will be more critical in relation to the future. Interior green walls are developing, which are becoming quite easy to maintain. “In my house, I have a couple of nice palms in self-watering containers and some ferns in a 100 SWANSEA LIFE
corner. They sit in my office along with asparagus ferns along my windowsill. The greenery connects to the wider landscape. Even just having a couple of plants is the first connection people have with nature.”
Wildlife is important “Even if you live in a high-rise flats, have bird feeders. Bees also get up there and other wildlife will find it. Having things that attract wildlife is a key aspect,” says Griffiths.
Focus on fragrance
Have elements of touch
“Scent is critical,” says Griffiths. “Choose things which are fragrant. There’s scientific evidence linking lavender to calm and sleep. The beauty of lavender is that it attracts bees and other distractions [too].”
Just as you’re thinking about sounds and scents, touch is another of the senses that can be tapped into. “Include plants around touch, such as soft ornamental grasses, the sort of plants that you want to run your hand through when you walk past,” suggests Griffiths. “Again, it’s about the connection with nature.”
Consider colour “In the RHS Wellbeing Garden at Wisley, we’ve looked at the psychology of colour and how its hues have an impact on us emotionally, but what seems to have more of an impact is the intensity of that colour. The brighter the colours, the more impact they have on our emotions,” Griffiths explains. “A mindfulness corner is about trying to surround yourself with different types of greens, because green is a colour that seems to be universally liked by people across the world, as is blue. “When you add water to the scene, it gives you the blues and the greens. They are commonly thought of as calming colours, linking nature, water and the sky, the things that give us life.”
Don’t over-complicate things Keep it relatively simple and opt for plants you’ll be able to care for. Griffiths notes that aiming to grow plants for success can boost self-esteem. For example, put strawberries in your mindfulness corner to attract wildlife, he suggests, and you are almost guaranteed a crop in your first year – and you get to taste the fruits of your labour.

Comfort is paramount and a heated steering wheel is perfect for those cold mornings and compliments the stunning leather interior. The Mustang Bullitt comes with SYNC 3, Ford’s latest technology system which allows you to make calls and send messages hands-free using voice control. It even allows you to use a series of voice commands to find places of interest, as you drive. Sound quality is enhanced by a B+O sound system, which allows your music to be played to an extremely high quality, through a series of speakers throughout the car. The limited-edition model gains additional equipment including Recaro seats, upholstery finished with green stitching and the SYNC 3 navigation pack with 1000w premium audio with 12
speakers, pre-collision assist and lanedeparture warning. Each car will have a unique chassis number plaque on the interior, making the car even more collectable. The Mustang Bullitt is a real head-turner and is a must-have for all fast-car and Ford enthusiasts.

nissan LEAF’S DRIVE FOR PROGRESS
T
he pros and cons of electric cars are well-documented and the choice as to whether you drive one is, for the time being at least, largely down to personal conscience and preference, writes Lee
Gibson. However, a week behind the wheel of the latest Nissan Leaf e+ during a busy shopping period did reveal a perk to emissions-free motoring that I had not previously considered. Buy your gifts at a mall or supermarket which has electric charge-points, of which there are a growing number, and you’re almost certain to get a parking space as long as you also take the opportunity to top-up your battery. Admittedly, with experts predicting the number of plug-in vehicles on our roads is set to soar in coming months, finding a free charging point may soon become just as difficult as finding any other parking space. And this dramatic increase in competition, as all the major car makers join the march towards greener motoring, is why Nissan introduced the Leaf e+ last year. The original Leaf was the trailblazer for mass-produced electric cars when it hit the road in 2011 and remains the world’s most popular one – with more than 400,000 sold globally. In the past couple of years, though, the choice has increased dramatically with numerous models set to launch in 2020. In an effort to keep up with the new kids on the block, the Leaf e+ offers extra power and range thanks to its 62kWh battery rather than the 40kWh one found in standard Leafs. 108 SWANSEA LIFE
Kicking out 217ps compared to the 150ps of 40kWh versions and offering peak torque of 340Nm – the upgraded e-powertrain means the Leaf e+ feels considerably more punchy despite being slightly heavier. The 0-62mph sprint comes up in a very respectable 7.3 seconds and Nissan says that acceleration from 50 to 75mph is nearly 13 per cent quicker too. Range is, of course, the key consideration with any electric vehicle and, according to official figures, that bigger battery means that the Leaf e+ is capable of carrying you for up to 239 miles on a full charge – an increase of 71 miles over its siblings. While some more recently-arrived competitors do better in this department, that’s a solid increase which keeps the Nissan competitive and offers much more peace of mind and flexibility. The ride is comfortable, settled and, as you’d expect, pretty quiet – and the Leaf e+ offers decent handling and agility with minimal body roll in corners. For those not used to electric vehicles the controls are not dissimilar to many modern automatics, especially hybrids, and driving this car is a relaxed and uncomplicated experience. The only thing which may take a little getting used to is Nissan’s e-pedal system, which, when activated, allows you to use just one pedal.
FAST FACTS Nissan Leaf e+ Price: £35,895 (with Government grant) Mechanical: 217ps, 62kWh battery driving front wheels via automatic gearbox Max speed: 98mph 0-62mph: 7.3 seconds Range: 239 miles Insurance group: 21 CO2 emissions: 0g/km BiK rating: 0% Warranty: 3 years/60,000 miles
Pressing the accelerator drives the car as usual but lifting your foot off it automatically brakes the vehicle, at the same time regenerating energy for the battery. The pay-off for the more powerful battery is an increase in charge times and it’ll take 32 hours to fully charge the Leaf e+ from your domestic supply. Fitting a 7kW wallbox, or using one of the many similarlyrated public charge points, reduces that to 11 hours and 30 minutes. For the quickest charging you will need to seek out the less common 50kW quick chargers, which can take you from 20 per cent to 80 percent capacity in around 90 minutes. The 62kWh powerpack is also only available in Nissan’s range-topping Tekna trim, so doesn’t come cheap at £35,895 with the Government’s incentive grant of £3,500. Standard equipment includes an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and navigation; a seven-speaker premium Bose audio system; semi-autonomous driving modes; rear view camera; air conditioning; heated front and rear seats and automatic emergency braking. While the challengers to its crown are increasing, the Leaf e+ ensures that Nissan’s pioneering electric car is still worthy of consideration.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Is A Seriously Safe crossover
T
he crossover market has gone crazy in recent years and all mainstream manufacturers are now well and truly in on the act, writes Enda Mullen. It’s a pie that is without doubt big enough for everyone to have a piece of – the compact and mid-sized crossover having pretty much replaced the hatchback as the family car of choice. Mitsubishi have made small-ish SUVs before but the Eclipse Cross is probably its first proper venture into crossover territory. Given the marque’s rich four-wheel-drive pedigree one would expect its take on a scaled-down SUV to be a decent effort – and indeed it is. The Eclipse Cross is certainly an eyecatching contender in a fairly congested segment, managing to combine a familiar SUV chunky presence with some sleek styling too. Its loud and proud front end combines well with a wedge-shaped rear end to create a profile that is easy to like. The interior has an element of familiar Mitsubishi ruggedness and overall it feels like a solid and well put together car. The cabin has a nice open feel and the elevated ride height helps to engender a big car kind of feel.
Space up front is abundant and legroom in the rear is generous too and can be varied via a sliding rear bench. It offers 448 litres of boot space. The styling overall on the inside is fairly conventional, but the controls are well laid-out and easy to navigate. The infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard via a seven-inch touchscreen. There’s just one engine choice for now, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit. It produces 163bhp and will take the Eclipse to a top speed of 125mph and sees it reach 62mph from a standing start in less than 10 seconds. This car had the optional CVT automatic gearbox which certainly made suburban driving easier, even if it did feel a little jerky at times. The Eclipse has commendable ride quality and also handles nicely for a vehicle that sits quite high. There’s the option of either front or four-wheel drive and I liked the added reassurance and grip this four-wheel drive version offered in the midst of winter. All in all the Eclipse delivers exactly what most crossover owners want – the genuine look and feel of an SUV in a scaled-down package.

JAGUAR REVAMPS the f-type
W
ith sharper styling, upgraded on-board technology and even more fire-power the latest Jaguar F-Type offers the ultimate in two-seater sports car appeal, writes Maxine Ashford. It boasts a muscular, assertive design but is also more sculpted in the process with super slim pixel LED headlights on certain models and subtly updated signature ‘J’ daytime running lights. There is a new clamshell bonnet, revised front bumper and larger grille for more visual impact. The styling is completed thanks to the flush deployable door handles and air vents. Move inside and the cockpit is truly driver-focused and features a Touch Pro infotainment system, Smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, a superb Meridian sound system and a whole lot more. But the eye-catching feature has to be the reconfigurable high definition 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display which can be personalised according to taste. The F-Type’s interior is pure quality at every turn with the finest leather upholstery and soft touch finishes – it simply oozes class and elegance without being garish in any way and the sports seats are snug, supportive and easy to adjust along with the poweradjustable steering wheel. With prices ranging from £54,060 to £102,370 F-Type owners can choose between coupe or cabriolet guises and there are generously equipped trim levels starting with the F-Type, then the F-Type R-Dynamic, followed by the First Edition and R models.
112 SWANSEA LIFE
Powering this iconic sports car is a choice of 2.0-litre, four-cylinder and 5.0-litre, eight-cylinder petrol engines with outputs ranging from 300ps to 575ps. All are matched to an eight-speed Quickshift transmission with full driver control via steering wheel paddles or the SportShift gear selector. There is also the option of rear wheel or all-wheel drive. We tried out the F-Type First Edition Coupe – a car that is modelled on the R-Dynamic but gains lots of extra kit, such as an Exterior Design Pack in Dorchester Grey and five-spoke, 20-inch wheels. The First Edition cars will have a limited run of just one year. This model also featured the very latest powertrain – the 5.0-litre V8 450ps version and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. And it’s a sound that just gets better and better, especially if you shift across to Sport mode and fire up the enhanced exhaust tone. In fact, the F-Type is a car that is heard long before it’s seen … and then just like that, it’s gone. Even on dreadful, water drenched roads the all-wheel drive F-Type was
beautifully poised and grounded without a slightest hint of slip. Bends and corners can be attacked with absolute confidence and the steering is really responsive with ample driver feedback. It feels much sharper on the open road than the outgoing model, which was starting to look a little jaded by comparison. The new F-Type is anything but. It’s agile, responsive and very potent with a wonderfully addictive and aggressive nature that simply seems to say: “Go on, dare you!” Much of this attitude is down to the uprated chassis set-up along with new dampers and springs that aid the improved agility and all-round performance. It’s definitely worth exploring the new driver interface too – that way you can have the benefit of a single dial for explosive pace work, the more traditional double dials or a fully blown navigation map. Storage options are very limited, but in all honesty, who cares? There’s boot space for 310 litres of kit along with a small central cubby box, narrow door pockets and a drop-down glovebox. With such potent performance capabilities, safety systems need to be pretty comprehensive and they are just that with the likes of lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition with adaptive speed limiter, roll over protection system, emergency brake assist, anti-lock brakes, driver condition monitoring and a whole lot more besides. All in all, Jaguar has brought its F-Type model bang up to date and it now offers a very viable alternative to sports cars from the German marques.

OUT & ABOUT
Star
of screen & stage It’s a time of new beginnings for classical star Katherine Jenkins. She talks about making her big screen debut, appearing on The Masked Singer and her new movie-themed album with David Owens
O
ne Saturday you’re being unmasked in an octopus outfit on national television, the next you’re rubbing shoulders with Johnny Depp at an international film festival. However, these were indeed the two vividly contrasting situations mezzo-soprano, classical-crossover star Katherine Jenkins found herself in. It’s that sort of life for the 39-year-old mother of two, whose stellar career across two decades has seen her scale the giddy heights of international singing success. Minamata is directed by Jenkins’ husband, American film director Andrew Levitas. It’s based on the book Minamata by Aileen Mioko Smith and celebrated war photographer Eugene Smith. The movie sees Smith, played by Johnny Depp, travelling back to Japan where he documents the effect of mercury poisoning in coastal communities, bringing the little-told story to the wider world. Minamata is Jenkins’ first film role and she talks with passion and enthusiasm about the movie, but also the nerves she felt being thrown in at the deep end appearing on screen with acting royalty. “I’d always talked about it,” she says. “I’d done bits of acting here and there and very much enjoyed those experiences, but I felt I’ve got so much singing to do that I didn’t want anything to take me away from that. But it’s a project that
I was passionate about. Sometimes it’s good to be taken out of your comfort zone and be pushed.” She understandably found acting alongside such established names a little “overwhelming”. “To be in your first role in your first scene in the movie and you’re acting opposite Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy, it was a bit overwhelming to say the least. “But at the same time I’d met them before, so I felt comfortable with them. They’re such legends and they were so encouraging, but I did need a moment to get over it,” she laughs. Minamata is a passion project for Hollywood royalty Depp. He brought the movie to Jenkins’ husband and together they brought it to the big screen. “He (Depp) felt it was an important story to tell and he loved the work of Eugene Smith,” she says. “He brought it to Andrew and they made it happen.” “It’s a true story about this community in a Japanese fishing village that was being poisoned for 20 years and they didn’t know it was happening,” she says. “The factory knew, the government knew and the community were deemed not important. It’s such a powerful story to tell because this is still happening around the world today.” When I ask her what it was like working alongside her husband and taking direction from him, she jokes: “I think it gave him the
opportunity as a one-off to be able to boss me around a bit. I thought I’ll give him that moment as it doesn’t happen often.” However, she then follows up by crediting her husband with giving her the confidence to play the role. “He did have to talk me into the part,” she says. “He did have to tell me that I was capable of doing it. He probably believed in me more than I believed in myself.” In the movie, Jenkins plays the part of American journalist Millie, second in command to Bill Nighy, who plays the editor of Life magazine. “What appealed to me in the role was firstly playing a female journalist at the top of her game in 1971 which was unusual and I loved the idea of her being a trailblazer back in the day. “The story really shines a light on the importance of freedom of the press. This story was hushed up until it was broken by Life magazine and Eugene Smith’s photojournalism.” A picture that Smith took, that of a mother cradling her severely deformed daughter, alerted the world to what was going on. “That was in 1971, now in 2020 some journalists in parts of the world are still living in fear of bullying or prison,” she says. “The freedom of the press is still in question.” The singer is entering another busy period

To be in your first role in your first scene in the movie and you’re acting opposite Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy, it was a bit overwhelming to say the least
in her life with a tour that will take her to concert halls around the UK including a date at St David’s Hall in Cardiff next February, and the release of a new album – called Cinema Paradiso – a collection of some of the most recognisable songs from the movies. The tracklisting includes such familiar standards as Moon River, When You Wish Upon A Star, Singing In The Rain, O Danny Boy and a standout duet with Welsh actor and singer Luke Evans. “The last few albums I’ve made have been inspired by what’s happening in my own world. This one in particular was inspired by the things that were going on around me. Having played my first movie role, it felt like a natural transition for me.” Given everything she has on the go, Jenkins is certainly enjoying a creative highpoint in her life, but it’s doubtful even she expected a year ago to be playing a masked octopus on Saturday night television! However, this was exactly the by-product of signing up to take part in the ITV show that was a smash on our TV screens –The Masked Singer. The performer, however, has stated how she had a very sweet reason for wanting to do the show – her four-year-old daughter. “A lot of what I do is quite serious looking to a child,” she explains. “So when it was put to me that it’s going to be the biggest show of 2020, I told them I would love to be an octopus because my daughter is obsessed with Blue Planet. Her favourite colours are pink and purple and she would think this is amazing.” However, her transformation into the octopus was quite the ordeal. Not only did she have to work hard to disguise her voice but the weight of the costume caused its own problems. “My costume was the heaviest, so what was really difficult was moving and dancing in it,” she says. “I started to really struggle and needed physical therapy every couple of days. It was quite intense under that thing.” And Katherine reckons it was worth it to see her daughter’s face when the octopus was unmasked. “She loved it when I was revealed. Some of the songs I sang on the show were for her. A lot of them were informed by her and now she gets to watch them and they’re like her dream mummy performances.” ■■Katherine Jenkins plays St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on February 12, 2021. You might even get a chance to ask him some questions about the stories behind the songs. Tickets: 0300 3656677

SWANSEA BAY WALK Join Andrew as he leads us on a Swansea Bay walk
Start/finish location .......... Clyne Gardens’ car park by the Woodman, West Cross Distance ..................................... 2 miles (1 hour) Level ............................................. Easy/Moderate Parking ........................................ As above
Clyne We’re officially into spring and as the weather (hopefully) gets better, there will be more opportunities for walking. Swansea Ramblers’ short evening strolls will begin this month and are in addition to our regular walks. All details are on our website. On Tuesday, April 14, I’ll be leading an evening walk in Clyne Gardens. Hopefully there’ll be some early flowering that will mature to full bloom by the time Merfyn leads his Saturday walk there on April 25. My walk will be about two miles while Merfyn will lead a six-mile walk (with an option to just do 3.5 miles of that walk). Clyne is a little hidden away off the Mumbles Road and behind the Woodman pub. It is well worth discovering as this Victorian collection of Rhododendrons is better than you’d see in Kew! Come on both walks and see how the garden changes as we head towards the May ‘Clyne in Bloom’ season. There is (limited) free parking alongside the Woodman, but there are other pay and
132 SWANSEA LIFE
display car parks close by. The lane at the side of the Woodman continues straight to the entrance of the gardens but first take a detour left just to see the exterior of the Victorian Clyne Chapel. Returning to the main entrance, go past the gate house and follow the main drive. Turn left before the ascent then right, (not the lane) to pass the small pond. Cross the small bridge and a maze of paths open up. Turn left and watch for the small Clyne brook. We’ll follow this upstream through the dell, largely the creation of Admiral Algernon Walker-Heneage-Vivian. As the season continues, this area will see flowering plants and the growth to maturity of huge Elephant Rhubarb and the attractive (but with an off-putting name), American skunk cabbage! Rhododendron and Azaleas abound in these gardens. Hopefully, on my walk we’ll see some of the early flowering ones then on the later walk, another grand flowering of the others, including Bluebells.

Turn right then note the pond before descending the Japanese bridge with a cascade at its lowest point. Ascend the other side to turn right and curve left to the top of the grass lawn that overlooks the bay. With a choice of three stunning leisure parks all based on the glorious and renowned Gower Peninsular, Premier Leisure Parks offer three jaw dropping locations to own your perfect holiday home. A paradise you can escape to at the drop of a hat, time and time again, whenever it takes your fancy. Premier Leisure Parks is an independent, family run business that has been providing high quality holiday homes in the most picturesque parts of Wales for nearly 25 years. All three parks are privately owned and based on the philosophy of providing high quality holiday homes, with a customer service to match, in the most idyllic of settings. A leisurely life of luxury awaits prospective holiday home owners and with no commercial fleet hire available this is as far removed as possible from the busy, boisterous and hectic holiday parks as you can get. A family owned and run business since 1994, there really is a personal touch to owning a holiday home here. Premier Leisure Parks are more like communities with friendly neighbours forming long lasting friendships. Many of the pitches are spacious and offer impressive sea and/or countryside views. The vast majority of the caravans are deluxe models from some of the best manufacturers including: BK Bluebird, Swift, Willerby and ABI. The caravans have either two or three bedrooms and can accommodate four to eight people. With an impressive range of new and pre-owned caravans available there is a holiday home to suit everyone’s budget and it's more affordable than you may think.
Whiteford Bay Premier Leisure Park overlooks the beautiful bay, has wonderful sunsets and its peaceful location is one of Gower’s best kept secrets. This is the largest of the three Premier Leisure Parks but shares the same intimate, friendly atmosphere as all the groups parks. Nestled behind Whiteford Burrows this hidden gem has a large children’s adventure playground making it an ideal choice for families. There is also a laundrette and shop and with no clubhouse on site but the award winning Britannia Inn public house with restaurant in walking distance along with a lovely village shop where you can sit in the cafe for homemade tea and cakes or buy local produce at your leisure.

PETER LYNN & PARTNERS
Do you and your relatives have an updated Will in place? There has never been a more critical time to make sure you have your affairs in order, and while we all want our loved ones to live a long and healthy life, it is prudent to prepare and prevent legal problems. How old do I need to be to have a will? A will is often seen as something you write when reaching the twilight of your years, and while those over 60 should certainly have one in place, if you have children or family members who depend on you financially, regardless of your age, get a will in place.
Ian Walker, wills, probate and LPA specialist, talks this month about the importance of updating your will
136 SWANSEA LIFE
What if I already have a will in place? Have you reviewed it to make sure it reflects your current lifestyle? If your circumstances have changed – new home, increased salary, children/grandchildren, divorce, etc. – make sure your will reflects any changes. It’s also worth having a review with a solicitor to ensure it is up to date with current legislation and it is as tax efficient as it can be.
and/or shareholder agreement in place. Without this, your business colleagues may encounter problems such as: n Difficulty accessing bank accounts to pay staff and suppliers, n Loans and supplier agreements may become invalid I have young children – who can be a guardian? If you have children (under the age of 18), you may wish to consider appointing a guardian to step in if something was to happen to you/and your partner. A letter can accompany the will which will set out any additional guidance you may want to give the guardians on issues such as who is to look after them, educational arrangements, access to inheritance, etc.
What if I have a second family? If you have children from a first marriage and you then marry again, it is paramount you have a will in place to make sure your children from the first marriage are provided for. If you do not make a provision in your will, and you die first, then everything will go to your new spouse on death, and your children may be disinherited.
Are there any other legal documents I should consider? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal tool that gives one adult the authority to make certain decisions on behalf of another person if they become unable to make decisions for themselves – known as lacking mental capacity. This could be through dementia, a life-changing accident, long-term illness; there are many scenarios, but without an LPA in place, people of importance to you will find it extremely difficult to make decisions on your behalf relating to finances, health, welfare or the running of your business so prevent legal problems and get an LPA.
What if I run my own business? Alongside a will, business owners should ensure they have an up to date partnership

The best new books to add to your april reading list A good book by your side is surely an essential... here’s Swansea Life’s pick of the best
Independence Square
by AD Miller is published in hardback by Harvill Secker, priced £14.99 (ebook £9.99). Available now AD Miller’s Man Booker Prize-shortlisted debut novel Snowdrops was an energetic tale of betrayal and murky morals set in Moscow. The action shifts west to Kiev for the follow-up to 2015’s The Faithful Couple. Against the backdrop of the Orange Revolution of 2004, Independence Square is a political thriller charting the diplomatic machinations aimed at averting tragedy as the Ukrainian people rise up to protest the result of a controversial presidential election. These events are
described in flashback as, over a decade later in London, former aspiring ambassador Simon Davey grapples with a shock reunion on the Tube, resurrecting painful memories of his apparent double-crossing in Kiev. A fine education in the details of an uprising which caused a ripple effect across eastern Europe that is still being felt today, the human element of the saga is more than compelling enough to make this novel digestible in a few sittings. 7/10

Strange Hotel
by Eimear McBride is published in hardback by Faber & Faber, priced £12.99 (ebook £7.99). Available now This may be a slip of a novel, but it requires a huge amount of mental effort and rigorous reading, if you’re to avoid being totally overwhelmed and driven to abandon it after the first page. Strange Hotel focuses on a nameless woman. We don’t know her age, what she does, or why she travels so much, and never encounter her outside the confines of a series of hotel rooms around the world. You slowly piece together the fact that sometimes years, possibly even decades, have passed between each new
room, as she grapples with the aftermath of casual sexual encounters, the loss of someone beloved, and seemingly considers leaping from her hotel balconies. Her interior monologues are both fraught and laboured, leaving you listless and free of empathy as a reader. The prose and structure – sometimes the sentences seem to have been modelled on Yoda’s delivery – are demanding, without being all that enlightening. Individual and ambitious, yes, but it’s not overly enjoyable. 5/10
