From the editor C

an you believe it is November already? No, me neither! The dreaded ‘C’ word will be here before we know it.

12 17

So, we’ve taken a cautious first step towards all the fun of next month and everything that comes with it for those who enjoy turning into a magpie at this time of the year and who love everything with a bit of sparkle attached to it. We’ll be road-testing and selecting the best pieces from all the festive fashion ranges next month. But we hope you like the tentative first steps (p12-16) our fashion team has taken with some of its favourite partywear pieces available to buy now. Perhaps unsurprisingly, soon, almost everything on the rails will be blitzed with dark, glamour-packed embellishment. For now though, enjoy the new season ahead and as the trees begin to display those show-stopping shades of burnt orange, conker brown and ochre yellow, there is surely little nicer a feeling than wrapping up in lots of cosy layers, seeking out some heartwarming food (p53-55) and the sort of comfort treats we all love so much at this time of the year. So all in all, another bumper edition we hope you really enjoy with its hundreds of local faces (p121-43) snapped at events such as the amazing Maggie’s ball and the Women in Business Awards as well as other charity fundraisers that form such an important part of local life here in Swansea. The autumn/winter divide can be both restorative and invigorating. A time for us all to revel in. A time of infectious optimism of what is still to come. Yes, by all means look forward. But don’t forget either to make the most of now.

wrap it up!

FASHION

When it comes to stocking up on new season essentials, a coat is one of - if not the most important item you’ll buy. It’s got to look good, keep you warm, and mesh well with the rest of your wardrobe, so this isn’t a purchase that should be taken lightly. Whether you want an affordable wardrobe update or an investment piece, here is one of our favourites this month....

STYLE PIN SHARP! Brooches are newsworthy again. Lady Hale, the president of the Supreme Court, wore a big silvery spider pinned to her lapel last month as she determined that Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful. Her sartorial subliminal messaging went viral on the web (was she saying he’s stuck in a web of lies?) offering a fresh reminder of the almighty power jewellery can have when utilised in one’s wardrobe.

SIZE

MATTERS

Check out this sheep brooch we spotted at Laura Ashley in Swansea, yours for £8. Among the fashion world’s many paradoxes is the fact that during times of uncertainty, designers seek out a happy place. Big, bold and brave, any dress in supersized form or in a vibrant colour served as a prevailing feature in the collections of those who are familiar with the style at this season's catwalk shows with sumptuous shades very on point.

Principles multicoloured checked city coat £52 (was £65); Principles black check print wide leg trousers, £28 (were £35); Principles navy check downbrim hat, £22; Faith natural leather chunky trainers, reduced to £23.20 from £29, available from Debenhams, Swansea

sock it!

If you’re still wearing your everyday pop socks with your trainers, you need to pick up some running-specific ones. Your feet need all the cushioning they can get, especially if you run on pavements rather than softer ground, and these padded ones are made with merino wool for extra warmth, while still managing to be breathable when you work up a sweat. Darn Tough women’s vertex no show ultra-light clover running socks, £14.40, Trekkit

treat your locks...

Vera Mont, £180 No matter how bright your blonde, it can start to lose its lustre pretty fast. Every blonde knows, that of all the hair disasters likely to strike between salon appointments, developing unwanted brassy locks might just be the worst. Even if you shell out a small fortune getting the perfect creamy colour at the hairdressers, just a few short weeks later, your hair can often turn an undesired shade as your icy tone fades fast. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to both prevent and fix an attack of the brassy blondes. Here’s one of the favourites of the team here at Swansea Life... John Frieda Sheer Blonde lightening shampoo, £6.99

One for him... It probably comes as no surprise that daring printed shirts are one of the most coveted style staples this autumn. Over the years, these statement-making shirts have pingponged across the oh-so fine line of tacky and cool. But this season, forget subdued monochromatic colour palettes, this season bolder is better and more is more. These not-so classic designs are no longer reserved for dads on vacation. With botanical designs, tie-dye and animal print, they have come a long way since their Tommy Bahama predecessors and are now offered for every type of gent. Abstract print shirt, £29,99; Zara, Swansea

of

dressing

Even if you’ve had decades to perfect the art of party dressing, every year presents new challenges. Roughly summarised, these are: how to look partytastic when you have come straight from the office/PTA meeting/a very long drive via a puppy trainer, and your trusted fallback LBD is no longer going to cut it – not even with the sparkly sandals. So what are the new rules (ie shortcuts) that we all want to know? Well, rule number one is this: plan ahead. So here's our round-up of some early party dress buys...

Try these cocoa-scented cosmetics

“A little bit of sweetness can drown out a whole lot of bitterness,” Francesco Petrarca once said. It’s unclear whether the Italian Renaissance poet was taking about chocolate at the time, but there’s no denying that partaking in a few squares of Dairy Milk or segments of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange can be a great mood booster. Not only is it delicious, but did you know chocolate has beauty benefits too? From face masks and scrubs to nutrient-packed supplements, your skin - and your senses - will thank you for trying one of these sweet treats...

1

If your Starbucks order is always a mocha, you’ll love the scent of this body scrub, which uses repurposed coffee grounds from UK cafes along with cacao seed extract, shea butter and coconut oil. The coffee grounds slough away dead skin cells, while the oils leave your limbs feeling super smooth.

2

I Love Chocolate fudge cake truffle bath and shower creme, £1.99, FragranceDirect

3

Hotel Chocolat liquid chocolate body mask, £14.95

New from Hotel Chocolat, this gorgeously gooey mask is inspired by a treatment at the Cocoa Rejuvenate Spa in St Lucia. Packed with cocoa seed oil, coconut, almond and apricot seed oils, when slathered on and left for 10 minutes it detoxifies and moisturises.

4

Organic Shop cocoa and sugar body scrub, £2.30, Notino

Whether you’re suffering with dry skin in winter or need to exfoliate before self-tanning in summer, a body scrub is essential year-round for combating flaky patches. This cocoa-scented organic scrub uses sugar granules to dislodge dead cells and reveal soft, moisturised skin.

5

Esthechoc Cambridge beauty chocolate, £29

Every beauty buff knows that antioxidants are essential for maintaining skin health as we get older, and you may have heard that they’re found in dark chocolate. Esthechoc combines cocoa polyphenolic epicatechins (to give them their technical name) and astaxanthin, another powerful antioxidant, in squares of dark chocolate that contain just 38 calories each.

Jo Malone Poppy and Barley Cologne, £98 for 100ml Inspired by the countryside, this pastoral pairing sees the soft, cereal warmth of barley joined by red poppy - which is as fresh as florals get - and juicy blackcurrant top notes.

Katie Wright sniffs out the best women’s and unisex launches

new winter

scents The change of seasons makes us crave all sorts of things; we pull on woolly jumpers instead of floaty dresses, warming soups win out over salads, and staying in becomes a lot more appealing than going out.

Suddenly our summer scents don’t feel quite right – an aroma is needed to go with our cold-weather clothing and that’s not hard to find, with so many fitting fragrance launches at this time of year.

Eat one a day to satisfy your sweet tooth while reaping skin benefits at the same time.

To that end, we’ve rounded up seven new scents that suit the season, including women’s and unisex picks – because the lines are increasingly blurred between what constitutes a perfume for “her” or a cologne for “him”.

ÍÍJean Paul Gaultier Le Beau Eau de Toilette, £52.50 for 75ml, The Perfume Shop. With just a golden fig leaf to spare his blushes, this hyper-masculine man is nearly naked, but who needs clothes when you’ve been doused in eau de Beau? ÍÍMoschino Toy Boy Eau de Parfum, £85 for 100ml, Selfridges Don’t be fooled by this playful black teddy bear - it conceals a spicy, grown-up scent for the modern man – or woman.

ÎÎSarah Jessica Parker Born Lovely Eau de Parfum, £21.25, reduced from £25, for 30ml,

6

Inlight beauty chocolate mask, £36

Made with the finest organic cocoa sourced from Grenada and no less than seven different nourishing oils (including argan and jojoba), this chocolate-orange mask is a cut above the rest. Only a thin layer is needed, applied once a week, to give your complexion a glow-tastic boost.

7

Seventh Heaven chocolate mud masque, £2.50, Claire’s

If #skincaresaturday is a part of your weekend routine, why not follow the theme with this bargain buy? Slather on the clay-based mask and let cocoa butter and cocoa beans impart their antioxidant goodness.

8

MyVitamins Beauty hot chocolate, £8.99

Is there anything better than a mug of steaming cocoa on a chilly night? How about a mug of steaming cocoa with added skincare benefits? Beauty hot chocolate is infused with hydrolysed collagen, B vitamins and antioxidants, and it’s only 36 calories per serving. We’ll drink to that.

ÏÏKenzo World Power Eau de Parfum, £65.50 for 50ml, Escentual. Lara says It is an old saying but a very relevant one; ‘If its not broken don’t try to fix it’! Amelia has beautiful hair. The length is perfect, a stunning natural colour and it looks great on her! Our role is to compliment clients, to create styles that enhance. So with that in mind we looked to enhance Amelia’s natural hair. The hair was cut using a technique that helps to release the natural movement without blocky layers. We then complemented her colour by working with her natural tones but brightening them up a little. Working with the natural tones helps to enhance Amelia’s natural skin tones. Amelia has natural movement in her hair, but we gave it more movement by setting on a pair of ghd tongs, we then gently brushed out to create soft movement.

Brush the hair back into a ponytail. A great tip is to lean the head backwards, this helps to get the hair into position. At this stage we left two sections out at the front to add a bit of softness and interest.

Roll the ponytail upwards and smooth as you go with your brush. The hair roll is secured against the head by tying with a piece of elastic. We have used two hair bands that have been cut in half,

one just above the ponytail and one to tie the roll later (step 4).

Lightprotection How to counteract the effects of blue light from digital devices We all know we should use SPF to protect against the ageing effects of the sun, but did you know there’s another complexionthreatening danger lurking indoors? According to esearch from Avon, only 10% of UK adults are aware that the light from a mobile phone can age you.

ÏÏEminence Lilikoi light defence face primer SPF 23, £55, The Skinsmith, theskinsmith.co.uk

“As a nation, we’re now spending a huge part of our days looking at screens and much of this time is spent looking at mobile phones,” says Dr Susan Mayou, consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic. “As a result, we’re seeing a significant number of younger patients with visible signs of premature ageing and a dull, uneven skin texture. “The increasing popularity of ‘selfies’ now means that people are pointing their phones at their faces for increased periods of time.” Computer and TV screens also emit HEV (high-energy visible) or blue light – you may have heard experts advising you to avoid them for an hour before bed, because they delay the release of melatonin, the substance that makes you feel sleepy at the end of the day.

Michelle Doherty, founder of Alpha-H, says: “Blue light not only wreaks havoc on our sleeping patterns, but

now there is also mounting evidence which points to it having a detrimental effect on our skin, resulting in the early onset of symptoms of premature ageing. Specifically, these include pigmentation, melasma and brown spots, the break-down of collagen and elastin, free radical damage and photoageing.” While you can feel the sun’s rays, and sunburn is a sign that you’ve definitely not protected your skin adequately, HEV light damage isn’t as obvious, and sunblock won’t help. “Unfortunately, while normal broad-spectrum SPF will protect you from UVA and UVB, it doesn’t do anything against blue light,” says Michelle. “Luckily, there are other ingredients which do.” Dr Mayou explains: “Vitamin C has unique antioxidant qualities, so I frequently recommend this to my patients to help tackle – and prevent – this kind of damage.

“Adding an antioxidant-rich cream to your skincare routine can act like a sunscreen against the light from digital devices.” There are a host of new products on the market designed to counteract the effects of blue light. SPOT CHECK Expert advice on stopping adult acne in its tracks

Unless you were extremely lucky, chances are, when you were a teenager you experienced acne of some sort, whether it was a smattering of spots or a serious outbreak. By the time you reached adulthood, though, with a bit more luck the zits disappeared. But what if they return? Why do some people suffer with acne way beyond adolescence? “There are many reasons as to why adults can experience acne,” says Lisa De-la-Plain, professional beauty therapist and co-founder of Beauty Flash. “One in particular can be a change in hormonal activity. As we move through the various stages of our life, our hormone levels fluctuate, and an imbalance can lead to breakouts. This is because producing more hormones stimulates the oil glands and hair follicles in the skin.” Then there are environmental factors, such as pollution and weather, that can cause a flare-up. “An increase in oil production, due to heat and humidity in the summer and surface dehydration in the winter months, can all encourage an acne breakout,” De-la-Plain says.

Pick the right spot treatment

Go back to basics

Consider what type of acne you have. Do you have inflamed red bumps? If so, you’ll need a spot treatment containing benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria and calms redness. If you have blackheads and whiteheads, you’ll want something with salicylic acid like Dermalogica Medibac overnight clearing gel. It reduces excess oil and exfoliates dead cells from the skin’s surface.

A simple routine is often the most effective. Cleansing and treating your skin twice a day is the best way to keep breakouts at bay, but you should tailor your products according to your skin type. If your skin is prone to oiliness, choose a cleanser like Medik8 clarifying foam, which uses salicylic acid to stimulate natural exfoliation to help clear clogged follicles. If you have sensitive skin, look for products containing lactic acid or hydrating ingredients like glycerine, as these aren’t as drying as those made for oilier skin types.

Lisa suggests: Dermalogica oil-free matte SPF 30, £46.50 and Dermalogica Medibac overnight clearing gel, £42.99

“If your experience of acne as an adult is different to your teenage years, that’s because your skin has changed, too. Your skin cell turnover starts to slow down as early as your 20s. This means dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of the skin, which can clog your pores and cause acne,” De-la-Plain explains.

Lisa suggests: The Inkey List Salicylic Acid cleanser, £10.99 or Medik8 clarifying foam, £17.85

So, what can be done to tackle the problem? Here’s what De-la-Plain suggests if you’re suffering with adult acne...

Be a sleeping beauty We all know that getting enough ‘beauty sleep’ helps our complexion, but did you know that your bed could be causing breakouts? Not washing your pillowcase regularly can result in a build-up of dirt, dead skin cells, and even breakout-causing bacteria. Switch your pillowcase either every few days or daily, dependent on how prone to acne you are. Breathable fabrics like cotton may be better when it comes to preventing breakouts.

Don’t skip moisturiser While it might seem like a good idea to skip the moisturiser, if skin becomes too dry, the oil glands tend to overproduce oil and can make acne worse. Hydrating the skin properly re-balances oil glands and helps control breakouts. Pick a light or gel consistency, like Medik8 balance moisturiser, with glycolic acid activator. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which also controls shine and oil production. Lisa suggests: Medik8 balance moisturiser, £45, or Kate Somerville oil-free moisturiser, £55

If all else fails, see a professional If you’ve tried everything, you’re still breaking out and your acne is causing psychological problems or is impacting your work or social life, don’t suffer in silence. Visit your GP. If your skin issues are severe, they will refer you to a dermatologist for a further skin assessment, to try and solve your concerns. SWANSEA LIFE 37

DR. CHARLOTTE

Let’s talk about ED! Having difficulties getting or maintaining an erection? It’s one of the topics men least want to talk about, because it is one of their greatest fears. When you’re a man you expect your penis to work on cue, every time, and freak when it doesn’t. It’s not something you talk to your mates about. You fear you’ve somehow failed as a man if you can’t get an erection on demand. So the more the message gets out that penises can be unreliable and nearly every guy can have problems from time to time, the more confident men will feel So a recent consultation with a man who advised me he wanted to ensure “fireworks in the bedroom” led me to this month’s theme. It is a subject that many men feel embarrassed to seek help for which is a shame as there is much GPs can do to identify the cause and treat it. What is ED? This is a condition where you cannot get an erection or keep it firm enough for penetrative sexual intercourse. It can also be an indicator of low sexual desire. Who gets it? It is very common and can affect all ages especially as men get older. For some it is a oneoff event, for others they get it now and again, and some patients sadly experience it regularly. Why does it happen?

Is erectial dysfunction having an effect on your relationship? This month Sketty GP and Swansea Life doctor Charlotte Jones, focusses on ED

Not infrequently it is down to lifestyle factors such as obesity, stress, excess alcohol, smoking, tiredness, low self-esteem etc. It can also be down to other causes such as relationship issues; anxiety and depression; side effects of medication or other substances (eg. anabolic steroids) or other physical causes/ illnesses (eg diabetes, MS, injuries to spinal cord; treatments for prostate disease; cardiovascular problems etc). But worry not, help is at hand…. What should I do if I have ED? Firstly, don’t be embarrassed and see your GP or if you don’t want to see your GP you can attend a local sexual health clinic (Swansea Bay University Health Board webpage has details of clinic times and contact details). They will discuss your symptoms with you and other factors that can contribute to, or cause, ED. Depending on what they think could be contributing to your ED, the doctor will more than likely suggest an examination of your genitals, blood pressure and possibly prostate. They may suggest some further tests (eg. urine, swabs, blood tests for cholesterol, glucose, testosterone levels etc). The next step would be to then discuss treatment options. What treatment options are there? Firstly, it is important to address any lifestyle

38 SWANSEA LIFE

factors that are affecting the quality and duration of erections (eg. weight loss; exercise; stop smoking; reduce alcohol; reduce stress etc) as this may resolve the problem completely without need for other intervention. If your GP thinks that anxiety or depression could be causing it, they may well suggest you think about counselling and/or cognitive behavioural therapy and/or psychosexual therapy. Your GP may advise treating specific causes if one identified (eg. blood pressure medication, testosterone replacement. In addition, or if no cause found, you may be suitable for some of the specific ED treatments available:  Tablets – many of you will have heard of Viagra (which is available to buy in pharmacists and not just on prescription) or “le weekend” pill (Cialis) but there are other preparations and brands available. These medications work by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide that in turn increases blood and erection if the penis muscles are stimulated (as it is the stimulation of the muscles that releases the nitric acid). They come in differing strengths and duration of action. However, they are not suitable for everyone, so do ensure you only take them if advised that it is safe to do so by your GP or pharmacist.  Injections – this is where you inject a medication into the base of the penis which then lasts for around an hour.  Intraurethral suppository (MUSE) - this is insertion into the urethra of a suppository which causes an erection after 10 minutes which lasts for between 30 and 60 minutes.  Penile implants – these are inflatable or flexible rods that are placed on both sides of the penis.  Vacuum pumps – these devices sit over the penis and the attached pump then creates a vacuum that pulls blood into the penis. Once the erection is formed, an elastic band is then put at the base of the penis to keep the erection firm and vacuum pump removed.

Katrina Andrew and Liam Jones A romantic proposal along a favourite Gower walk set the stage for a dream wedding (with their two beloved dogs at their side) at Clyne Farm for Katrina Andrew, 30, an inventory manager and Liam Jones, also 30, an electrician from Brynamman. They now live in Treboeth, Swansea. Peter Slee has been to meet them... “We’d been together for about five years when we decided that we wanted to get married, so started to look at venues and actually chose our venue and photographer before any proposal had even happened! I still wanted the traditional romantic proposal even though the wedding organisation was well underway, so we took our two dogs, Bo and Bullet, on one of our favourite walks from Parkmill to Three Cliffs Bay in Gower on a blusteringly windy Saturday in July and Liam got down on one knee at Pennard Castle overlooking the estuary and officially asked me to marry him.

40 SWANSEA LIFE

Even though I knew exactly what was happening it was still a lovely moment that we will always remember, and it did help to make me feel ‘officially’ engaged. Clyne Farm Centre was the third venue that we had viewed and as soon as we arrived and took in the breathtaking 360° views across Swansea Bay and Mumbles we knew it was the venue for us. The two stone barns and cottages circling a courtyard, with farmyard animals in the surrounding fields, give it a beautifully rustic countryside feel. They are also dog-friendly, allowing for our two dogs to be involved in every part of our day, which was hugely

important to us. Although they had hosted wedding receptions before, they had only just received their wedding licence, so we were their very first wedding ceremony. In a way this made it the perfect ‘blank canvas’ for the vision of our day and Geoff and Sarah at Clyne Farm were brilliant at bringing all our ideas to life. We really wanted an easy-going and relaxed wedding with as little formality as possible, which made Clyne Farm the perfect fit. We wanted to make it about spending quality time with our loved ones, so the on-site accommodation was ideal to have our guests join us on Friday evening for a barbecue and

paella (organised by my amazing Uncle Rob, Aunt Ellie and my cousins), so everyone could get together before the big day and make the most of our time. It was a real party atmosphere and it was great that guests could get to know each other before the wedding day in a relaxed environment. The day itself was also very relaxed; we had a short ceremony in the small stone barn, then drinks and canapes in the courtyard, with a pony ride provided by the farm for the children. We didn’t want a formal sit-down meal, so we didn’t have a seating plan and had a buffet for our wedding breakfast and a hog roast and Joe’s ice cream in the evening. I had six bridesmaids: my sisters Megan and Molly were co-chiefs, then Liam’s sister Tash, my two oldest friends from Devon, Lesley and Evie and my friend Lauren. Our niece Indie was my beautiful flower girl and our two nephews were our page boys. Megan found the bridesmaid dresses on Asos and I loved it as soon as I saw it. Its flowing fabric and flowery detailing (it even had bees amongst the flowers!) were perfect for our day, and most importantly all the girls loved it too! All six bridesmaids and both mine and Liam’s mums came with me to shop for my dress in Bristol

and we ended up finding ‘the one’ in a tiny boutique, so it was a bit of a squeeze for us all but Charlotte at The Bridal Boutique was very accommodating. My aunt Ellie very kindly offered to make our wedding cake for us and she did such an amazing job. It was three-tier red velvet with buttercream icing; simple but delicious! I think my uncle Rob loved getting to try all the practise bakes beforehand too! We set up our own photobooth area with a backdrop, artificial flowers and stand with remote clicker bought from Amazon; we then used an iPad on the stand to snap lots of fun photos of the guests with photo props from Hobbycraft. We also used an Instax Polaroid camera for guests to take additional photos which they then wrote a message on then clipped onto a huge frame gifted to us by Liam’s sister and partner, Tash and Luke, in place of a traditional guest book. We had our ceremony at 2.30pm, which meant we could have a relaxing morning getting ready; we had a real glam team morning in the bridemaids’ cottage with Jade Davies Hair and Lucy and her team from Irresistible Beauty doing a wonderful job on our hair and make-up, meaning we could sit back, sip bubbly and enjoy the morning together.

BRIDE

We didn’t want a lot in the way of decoration, so only had hessian bunting, fairy lights and flowers. Our florist, Sarah at Blooming Belles, was amazing from the minute we first met with her; she ‘got’ our vision immediately and we trusted her completely. On the morning of the wedding Sarah and her partner set everything up perfectly, even lending us table runners and a cake stand free of charge! The bouquets were gorgeous, and as my ‘something old’ my sisters had given me a photo charm of my grandpa Reg, who had sadly passed away two years ago. It was tied in with the ribbon on my bouquet, which was a lovely way of feeling like he was there with us. Sarah’s flowers were a highlight of the day and we couldn’t recommend her services highly enough. Another recommendation would be our photographer, Pippa Carvell. When we first started planning the wedding, we knew immediately that we wanted Pippa as our photographer. She is a friend of a friend, so we’ve been aware of her work for some time

42 SWANSEA LIFE

and love her natural style. We didn’t really want staged or posed photos, so asked for a natural approach to capture the real-life moments happening throughout the day, and Pippa did such a wonderful job with this. She was amazingly helpful and even went out of her way to help out with things throughout the day to ensure it all went smoothly. I had seen our band, The Apple Tree Theory, play at a club a few years before and knew we had to have them at our wedding, and they certainly didn’t disappoint! They created the best atmosphere with their eclectic mix of country, reggae and folk complete with a frontman playing the washboard, filling the dance floor from our first song (their cover of The One by Kodaline) through The Fresh Prince of Bel Air all the way to Robbie Williams’ Angels, they made it a truly memorable night.” *Photographer: Pippa Carvell www.pippacarvellphotography.com

worth shelling out for With seafood stalls and fishmongers brimming with all manner of fish and shellfish, now’s the time to set sail with a glass of white and school ourselves on wines that work wonders with seafood

1

Waitrose & Partners Arinto 2018 Lisboa, Portugal (£7.99, Waitrose, Cowbridge)

Home cooking with Penllergaer’s Sian Day A delicious recipe for October

How to cook perfect tarte tatin

Waitrose’s new range of own-label wines celebrates the beauty of lesser-known grape varieties to encourage wine lovers to experiment and try something new. While the grape might be unfamiliar, this arinto offers the same instant pleasure as say a sauvignon blanc, and doesn’t hold back when it comes to lemony, fruity freshness. There’s also a burst of fine acidity to pair with oily fish such as mackerel, or salted cod and chips.

2

Cune Barrel Fermented Blanco 2018, Rioja, Spain (£10.99, Waitrose) A lightly-oaked Rioja that’s full of pineapple and apple aromas. Discover hints of banana and vanilla and a lovely depth of ripe fruit, plus there’s good acidity and a fullness on the finish that works beautifully with meaty white fish. Try roasted monkfish with watercress and garlicky lemon mash.

3

Alma Andina Torrontes 2018, Salta, Argentina (£9.99, Laithwaite’s) A light, bright and breezy wine, this floral-edged torrontes offers fragrant notes of honeysuckle and lemon, crisp citrus and peach flavours, and a delightfully refreshing finish. Argentina’s signature white grape is a great match with most shellfish and seafood, and this one’s so bright and inviting, it feels as exhilarating as the high-altitude landscape it comes from.

4

Invivo X, SJP Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Marlborough, New Zealand (£12, Sainsbury’s, Swansea and Gorseinon) Actress, producer, designer - Sarah Jessica Parker is all of these and an oenophile. The Sex And The City Star has teamed up with Invivo, a New Zealand winery, to put her name to a sauvignon blanc. She said: “We had great fun making this wine and we hope very much that you love it as much as we do!” The wine offers a vibrant mix of green tropical fruit notes with a lively citrus and grapefruit character. Pair it with garlic prawns, seared scallops with rocket pesto or spiced crab cakes.

5

Legado del Fraile Albarino 2018, Galicia, Spain (£12.99, Virgin Wines)

You can’t go wrong with the crisp, refreshing style of this Spanish white wine variety from ‘green Galicia’, where cool breezes from the Atlantic shape the wines and bless the fruit with a subtle salty tang. Vibrant and uplifting, lemon and grapefruit are supported by notes of nectarine, and there’s enough vibrancy to put the wind in your sails.

Dark and sticky caramel, sweet apples and crisp pastry combine to make this heavenly French dessert, and with Sian Day’s recipe you can make it to perfection every time Having received a glut of apples this year I decided to make this traditional and classic French dessert recipe. It’s a truly autumnal pudding, really heart-warming and very easy to make and perfect for the chilly evenings that are before us. When I visited Paris I was bowled over by their delicious pastries adorning the windows of patisseries on every street corner. Many of the French desserts are made of a combination of pastry, fruits and crème patisserie, or custard to us home cooks. The French truly are wonderful cooks and have great tasting produce. A lot of their recipes are quite simple letting each of the ingredients shine through for maximum taste. ingredients ■ 5 – 6 apples (Coxes are best) ■ 100g caster sugar ■ 85g butter ■ 300g puff pastry (shop bought) ■ Fresh cream or ice cream to serve method 1. Begin by peeling and coring the apples and cut into quarters. Place the sugar over a medium to high heat in a skillet and cook until it caramelises and goes a golden brown colour ensuring it doesn’t burn. 2. Take off the heat and put in 60g of the butter diced and stir to combine. Nestle the apples rounded side down into the caramelised syrup and brush with the remaining butter which needs to be melted. 3. Place into a pre-heated oven 180C gas 4 and cook for 20-30 minutes 4. Meanwhile unroll the pastry from its packaging and place a plate on

top and cut out a round circle that will fit over the pan,. Prick all over with a fork. 5. Remove the pan from the oven then tuck in the pastry and pierce a couple of times with a sharp knife to allow any steam to escape. 6. Pop back into the oven (remember to use an oven glove) and bake for 30-40 minutes until risen and golden brown. 7. Remove from the oven and run a sharp knife around the edge. Take a plate and put on top and flip over allowing all of the fruit to leave the skillet. 8. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving as you will most definitely burn your mouth otherwise! meringues are just an opportunity Former Bake Off finalist Kim-Joy tells Ella Walker about the need to make mistakes, and what the inside of her brain looks like

You may have bumped into 2018 Great British Bake Off finalist Kim-Joy Hewlett on a train and proceeded to chat to her for quite some time, knowing her from somewhere, but unable to pinpoint exactly where. This happens a lot to the Leeds-based baker these days. “People think I’m a friend they haven’t seen for a while,” says the 28-year-old, who became beloved for her positive, soothing presence in the famous, bunting-scattered tent. She “just goes with it”, eventually nudging people with a well-placed: ‘Do you watch baking shows on telly?’ You see, Kim-Joy is all about “feel-goodness” she’d never cold-shoulder a chatty stranger. Her debut cookbook, Baking With Kim-Joy - taglined: “Cute And Creative Bakes To Make You Smile” - epitomises that “feel-goodness” factor; from its burnished yellow cover (her favourite colour) to the motivational quotes and puns strewn among its pages. Take her woodland cake recipe, bolstered with the note: “Don’t always focus on how mushroom you have for improvement - remind yourself of the things you are already good at!” The woman streams pure sunshine. And the book, she says, matches the inside of her brain, which she likes to think is also “yellow, with frogs hopping round it, and little creatures”. And there are many a delicately wrought creature to make and then scoff: sugar paste space turtles, pigs as profiteroles, cat-shaped buns, koala macarons, bear madeleines, meringue ghosts, and cookies in every cat, deer, bunny and honey bee form. It’s like stepping into a fairy tale world, one that miraculously avoids being too cutesy. Perhaps it’s because these critters have a fleeting joy to them, rather than a contrived adorableness. Kim-Joy likes to try new things all the time, so although the base might be a tried-and-tested staple, when it comes to decorating a biscuit or a cake, “I want it to be different each time.” Her savoury cooking gets anthropomorphised too. “If I make a pizza, I still like to do faces,” she says, and her tarka dal? “I probably wouldn’t decorate that... I could probably think of a way to decorate it...” Get her on kid’s TV immediately. Surprisingly, aside from textiles at school, Kim-Joy has no real art background. Born in Belgium to a Malaysian-Chinese mother and English father, she moved to the outskirts of London aged five, and none of her family are arty or bakers. Her desire to decorate, and patience for it, come entirely from within. “I’m just focused on what I’m doing, and that’s what’s so therapeutic about it,” she says of piping and the peace it brings. “The worst time for being anxious is when you’re not doing anything, and I think that’s why

people find it hard to fall asleep, because that’s the very time you’ve got literally no distractions, no sound, nothing, in the dark - there’s no stimulus. “But when you’re decorating a biscuit, you’re just busy doing that, so you’re not thinking, until afterwards when you’re like, ‘Oh my god, the kitchen’s a mess, I’ve got to tidy up now’, and I’m like, ‘Nah, I don’t want to do that, I just want a nap.’” She is not militant about decoration though. She doesn’t expect everyone to find escape in festooning baked goods with intricate icing like her, and is clear that it takes repetition, practice, and mistake-making to get the knack. “When I say things come out of mistakes, I genuinely mean that,” she says, tracing a picture in the book of liquid glucose coral atop a huge whale cake, which pretty much exploded in the oven.

While some aspects of baking are a science, even when things go wrong, she’s adamant they’re still salvageable: “Like if you make choux pastry and it’s under baked, it tastes so good!” And cracked meringues are just an opportunity to fill in the ridges and crevices with gold - “which is actually a Japanese technique called kintsugi,” she explains. “When their pottery breaks, instead of gluing it with invisible glue, you glue it with gold to highlight the cracks. It’s all about things that are broken being made more beautiful because they’re broken.” Bake Off is now back for its 10th series, with a whole new roster of bakers hoping to wow judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood. Kim-Joy pauses when asked what advice she’d have given the newbies before entering the tent.

“People always say, ‘Just be yourself, believe in yourself’, but that’s really hard to do in practice,” she muses.” “I’d say that it’s going to be tough, and to expect that it’s going to be tough, but it’s worth it. And however well you do, however far you get, you’ve done well just to be on there,” she adds. And on that note, she hands me a pink cardboard gift box containing a perfectly decorated alpaca biscuit. It’s iced in pale turquoise with yellow dotted flowers, and it’s smiling. Baking With Kim-Joy: Cute And Creative Bakes To Make You Smile by Kim-Joy, photography by Ellis Parrinder, is published by Quadrille, priced £18.99. Available now.

Vegan wines are on the up

Viu Manent -Secret Viognier 2017, Chile

Interested in trying vegan wine? Sam Wylie-Harris asks an expert how to seek them out

egan wines were cited as one of the 2019 wine trends to watch, thanks to our increasing appetite for all things plant-based.

“The greater time the juice is left to settle increases the chances of microbes spoiling the juice, and therefore it’s a swell idea to get it clean and fermenting as soon as you can.

And while some online retailers have “vegan wine” sections on their websites, trying to find one can be quite vexing at times.

“So, fining agents are used to polish a final wine again where time doesn’t allow for gravity to take its course. Traditionally, fining agents are of animal origin; most notably gelatin, fish oil, and egg whites. But, these products are carefully removed from the remaining wine as the whole

V

“With the rise of vegan food, restaurants and cafes comes the rise of vegan wines,” says Nicholas Jones, head buyer and winemaker at Winebuyers.com, an online wine club connecting vineyards, producers and specialist merchants with wine lovers.

“Many would naturally think that all wine is vegan; it’s made from grapes after all. However, most wines are not and that is down to the ‘fining’ process when winemaking.

56 SWANSEA LIFE

 Does vegan wine taste different? “The wines would have differences in flavour due to the different treatment in the winemaking process. Every action, or inaction, in the winery has a result. With a huge number of variables at play, it wouldn’t be fair to say if a vegan wine would taste better or worse though.”

“When it comes to telling if your wine is vegan, this can be tricky as there are no rules about needing to list all the ingredients on a wine bottle. However, the rising interest in vegan wines in recent years has meant that most winemakers are labelling their wine vegan-friendly, making them much easier to find.”

 What’s the difference between vegan wine and non-vegan wine?

“Waiting for solids to sink by gravity and skimming off the clarified juice takes time and with some protein-rich grape varieties, it’s near-on impossible and very wasteful.

from a pea protein. A lot of winemakers use a clay-based finer called bentonite, or potatoes get the job done too.”

 So how can you to tell if a wine is vegan?

Want to know how to up your vegan wine game? Mr Jones explains everything you need to know...

“Most young wines are cloudy in colour and contain tiny molecules of proteins, yeast and other organic particles. However, most wine lovers like their wine clear and bright, and many fining and clarification methods can be used to accelerate this clarification of a wine.

Momo - Pinot Noir 2017, Marlborough, New Zealand

point of their addition is to clarify the wine and not leave floaters behind. “The addition of animal-derived products doesn’t mean they end up in your glass, as these compounds are separated from what you drink, but there is an outside chance that a miniscule amount of these will end up in your system. “Other filtering and fining agents are used in vegan wines, and a favourite for me is derived

 Can we expect to see more vegan wines making themselves known? “As for the future of vegan wines, I believe this is only set to increase in popularity. Where a rise of veganism is seen, wine will follow. “However, the more we educate people that vegan wines are not necessarily any better for them, or the environment, we could see a dip in the other direction.”

HOUSE & HOME

LOVE at first sight The Old Vicarage is lucky enough to be in a waterside setting in one of the world’s most beautiful spots looking out over Langland. Peter Slee has been to check it out... If it’s interior design inspiration you are after, then it really doesn’t get a whole lot better than this, surely? Or perhaps its the spectacular, uninterrupted sea views out over Langland Bay or the scale of this vast, seven-bedroomed, quite beautiful family home. “This home will impress at first sight,” says Fine & Country’s Beth Evans. She’s right too! The Old Vicarage is a wonderful property with a unique look. Nestled on a prime spot on the headland overlooking Langland Bay, the first thing any visitor to the house will be looking at are those incredible, uninterrupted sea, beach and coastal views. From the lawn, terrace, garden room and most windows, the sweeping sea views to the horizon are truly mesmerising. But the interior of the house can definitely compete for attention. The current owners have successfully blended original features with contemporary, heritage-inspired decor to create a stylish home easily worthy of thousands of followers on Instagram and Pinterest.

62 SWANSEA LIFE

Throughout the home the arts and crafts style period features have not only been incorporated into the interior design, they have been allowed to be the centrepiece. The home oozes character; stained glass doors and windows, original flooring, including wood parquet, sanded floorboards and quarry tiles, plus a collection of fabulous fireplaces. The high ceilings, coving, skirtings and occasional archway ensure that each room has charm and has allowed the current owners to choose decor that is tasteful and elegant, but also modern in colour choice and accessories. The hallway is a grand entrance that sets the scene and whets the interiors appetite for any visitor, with marble fireplace, chandelier, ceiling rose and pretty window seat combining to make this an appealing space. In total, the house has three main reception rooms, plus a kitchen/diner, conservatory and some surprise spaces on the ground floor. In the lounge, standing in the substantial bay window area, the views of Langland Bay are hypnotic. But once you can pull yourself away from the window, the room is an elegant and vibrant place to relax.

Against the backdrop of the dark plum colour walls the interiors sing, with strong accent colours combining to bring a contemporary feel to the space. The period fireplace is given centre stage by being framed by an arch and windows either side. The TV room next door is equally as big and beautiful, again boasting an eye-catching fireplace, period floors and wall-arch detailing. This space is lit by a wall of windows and French doors leading out onto a garden terrace and those incredible views beyond. A light and spacious formal dining room can be

found along the hallway which also has a fireplace and doors to the garden. However, this dining space reminds a potential buyer of the period pedigree of the property, with this room being served by a delightful butler’s pantry next door. In this space the family’s best china would have been displayed on the vast dresser, with ample storage for all dishes and paraphernalia required for even the most well attended dinner parties of the past. Call Jeeves, on the original servants’ bells which are still in place, to serve your guests as soon as the meal is ready! SWANSEA LIFE 63

HOUSE & HOME

And for anyone loving the current interiors trend of a separate pantry, this home will definitely excite. Opposite the butler’s pantry is a food pantry which also oozes period charm, including the original slate cooling shelf used to keep meat cold long before a fridge was invented. The kitchen itself is a pretty space populated by country style units in complementary heritage colours, an island and two Agas. The granite work tops and chandeliers provide a touch of luxury and there are all the integrated appliances a kitchen requires, as well as space for an American-style fridge freezer. The room also has space for a breakfast dining area, but it’s likely a new owner will be drawn to the adjoining open-plan garden room instead to enjoy their cornflakes. Two walls of floor to ceiling glass, a glass roof and bi-fold doors opening out onto a garden terrace ensure this is a wonderful space to eat, relax and be enveloped by the views. A walk-in storage room, utility room and a full property security system completes the ground floor accommodation and features. And if a new owner wants even more space there is planning consent in place to add a two-storey rear extension. Upstairs there are two floors of beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms and, as with downstairs, there are an abundance of period features such as fireplaces and flooring. From these higher floors the views from the windows of the six bedrooms and three bathrooms are even more captivating. On the second floor there is a bonus 64 SWANSEA LIFE

guest bedroom with Juliet balcony, which captures the views from this elevated position, a study space and an en suite shower room. Lucky guest. The tasteful and stylish interiors continue upstairs. Where modern fixtures and fittings have been added they are either ageappropriate, such as the roll-top baths, or a stunning statement piece such as a contemporary metallic Tom Dixon light or funky wallpaper. And that’s where this home has been designed so well. The new additions, both structural and choice of decor, not only make the most of the prestigious location, but beautifully balance the new and modern with the period charm of the Old Vicarage. Fine & Country’s Beth Evans says the property is both glorious and imposing at every level “Its character and original details really are incredible,” she adds.

hanging around

14 tips from the experts It may sound daunting, but even a first-timer can wallpaper like a pro with the right prep and patience. Lisa Salmon finds out how

S

Sick of staring at the same old walls? Then why not give them a bright new look by wallpapering them?

Putting up wallpaper is a great way to introduce personality into your home or update decor, as there’s a huge variety of colours and patterns available. Wallpaper can help hide uneven walls, small dimples and imperfections too, and is generally cheaper and easier than replastering. “If you’re new to wallpaper then the thought of tackling the job yourself can feel a little overwhelming, but it’s actually really easy to hang,” insists Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper (iwantwallpaper.co.uk). “And as with any job, preparation is key. “If you’re nervous about using patterns, try a feature wall while you find your feet,” she adds. “They’re still a huge trend in interiors and will provide a focal point in the room.”

BEfore you start

Keen to know more? Here are Whitecroft’s tips for stripping and hanging new wallpaper...

1. Check the existing paper It’s important to know what’s underneath existing wallpaper. Use a scraper to test how many layers of paper there are. The best paper to remove is ‘strippable paper’ and most vinyl wallpapers are strippable – a smooth texture on the back will indicate this. Check how easy the paper’s going to be to remove by using a knife to pry away a corner of the paper, then pull it down at an angle. If it peels away in a long strip, with no signs of adhesive underneath, the task is a lot easier. To make wallpaper even easier to remove next time, add an acrylic primer to the wall.

2. Prep like a pro It’s important to protect floors, woodwork and furniture, and it’s also good practice to remove wall sockets if possible. Cover any gaps with tape to stop water getting in, and turn the electricity off to be extra safe. If you can’t remove furniture, then move it to the centre of the room and cover it with a sheet. To do the job properly you’ll need: A ladder, wallpaper scraper, utility knife, spray bottle, liquid soap/detergent, a sponge, tape, old sheets and rubber gloves.

3. Give it a good soak Erismann exotic peacock wallpaper from £13.99 a roll, I Want Wallpaper

70 SWANSEA LIFE

For non-strippable wallpaper, make a number of slits around 10-inches apart in the paper with a

You’ll need a pasting table, stepladder, a bucket, a paint roller and tray, pasting brush, a seam roller (a tool that helps seal edges without marking surfaces), a wallpaper smoother (a flexible plastic tool to smooth wallpaper and remove air bubbles), a spirit level/plumb line to make sure you hang wallpaper straight, pushpins, a steel tape measure, pencil, scissors, a large scraper and a utility knife. utility knife, being careful not to damage the wall underneath. Use a sponge to wet the wall with a mixture of warm water, a small amount of cellulose paste and liquid detergent. Adding slits allows moisture to soak behind the wallpaper, making removal much easier, and creates strips to guide removal strokes.

4. Scrape away Once the paper’s soaked for a few minutes, start to scrape it off with a wallpaper scraper. Slide behind the slits, holding the blade at a 30-degree angle, slowly scraping the paper upwards, away from the wall.

5. Removing well-stuck wallpaper Steamers can be used for more stubborn papers – they’re slightly messier than the slit and soak method, but if wallpaper’s stubborn, they’ll get the job done. Alternatively, try fabric softener – it softens both the glue and the paper, making the job much easier. Mix equal parts of softener and hot water in a spray bottle, and spray a section of wallpaper until it’s saturated. Wait around 15 minutes to allow the solution to work its magic, then peel away the paper, using a paint scraper on stubborn areas.

6. Removing wallpaper paste There may be residue or traces of glue left on the wall, which can be removed with a solution of washing-up liquid, a tablespoon of baking soda, vinegar and hot water. Apply with a sponge. The solution should soften the glue or paste, so it’s easy to wipe away with a rag. Use a putty knife or scraping tool to remove any remaining paste.

7. Prepare to paper Once the wall’s dried thoroughly, patch any holes with a joint compound (a creamy material available from DIY stores). Once dry, use sandpaper to create a smooth surface.

8. Make sure you’ve bought enough paper for the space Buy wallpaper in consecutive batch numbers, so the paper matches up. Accurately measure the area that needs to be covered and slightly over-order to allow for mishaps. Over-ordering is also necessary if you’ve chosen patterned paper, so you can match up the pattern repeat.

sure you have adequate paper to line up the pattern repeat.

11. A good pasting Some pastes can remove the finish of wallpaper, especially delicate papers, so check you have the right paste for your paper. A wheat base is gentle and suitable in most cases. To apply paste, lay a strip of paper flat on the table and level with the edges, weigh down each end and spread on the paste evenly. Fold the paper in a concertina to carry it safely to the wall.

12. Line it up It’s important to get the first length straight, as this sets the template for the rest of the room, so use those straight pencil lines you’ve already drawn as a guide.

13. Work outwards

‘Size’ the wall by covering it in a mixture of half PVA glue and half water applied with a paint roller. It’s not essential, but this will create a slightly glossy finish to the wall and make it easier to slide paper into position and help it stick.

If your paper has a large pattern, then start in the middle of the wall or at a focal point in the room and work outwards – again, you’ll need to measure the mid-point in your wall. For plains or small pattern repeats, begin papering from the corner of the room, ideally on a wall with no windows or doors so you can hang full lengths without any problem. And make sure each sheet of paper is the right way up!

10. Get it straight

14. Overlap and trim

Use the plumb line to draw straight lines at regular intervals around the room.

Apply the paper to the wall, allowing some overlap at the ceiling, and then trim it. Don’t worry if your first attempt’s wonky, you can manoeuvre your sheets to get them into the perfect spot as the paste won’t dry immediately. Repeat with further strips and ensure the pattern lines up. Smooth the paper so there are no air bubbles and voila – you’ve wallpapered like a pro!

9. Again, it’s all in the prep

Measure the floor to ceiling height of the room and make a mark on your pasting table - this saves time measuring each piece of paper individually. Allow a few extra inches for variations in height within the room – especially in old houses where floors and ceilings can be uneven – and to make

How to build a kitchen you love… …and one which loves you back What do you want from your kitchen? Only when you know what you want from your kitchen can you prioritise it and pick a design that satisfies it. You can always add in the features that you love later! By thinking about your needs before the design process, you can save yourself a lot of money and you will end up with a kitchen that you love and one that will last you for many years to come.

Do you want a kitchen that… 1. Has plenty of workspace? If you cook a lot, having a lot of workspace could be a priority for you. When designing your kitchen, consider adding more cabinets and worktops or even a kitchen island.

2. Is easy to use? If practicality and functionality are most important to you, the layout of the kitchen is key. Don’t forget about the kitchen work triangle (the positioning of the oven, sink, and fridge) to increase efficiency between each work station.

3. Maximises storage? Whether you have a big family or just love the minimalist look, having storage may be a musthave for you. When thinking about your kitchen design, maximise the space in your cabinets with specialised storage solutions and consider adding a larder cupboard too!

4. Makes space a priority? If you love to host and entertain then your kitchen needs to accommodate a lot of traffic as well as having enough space to cook and mingle. Consider this

need when choosing your kitchen layout; open plan, L-shaped or even U-shaped with a kitchen island would be ideal! To design a kitchen that you love, you have to think about what you really want from it first. What means the most to you?

How to build a kitchen that lasts Kitchen remodels and renovations can be a big expense, so don’t invest what you have in a design that you don’t love. Using our previous tips to find out what you want from your kitchen, you can make sure that your design satisfies everything that you want and need, now you just have to make sure that design lasts. When we design kitchens for our clients, we want to build ones that last, ones that they love and ones that give back for the long-term. Here is how we do just that.

1. It’s all about quality materials You pay for what you get so if you spend less on a kitchen that has cheap materials, you can’t expect it to perform well or to last as long as you’d like. This is why we use quality materials in all of our kitchen designs.

2. Allocate sufficient budget to two areas If you don’t have a big budget, make sure that you allocate what you do have to your worktops and cabinets. You use these elements every day so you need to invest in quality ones if you want them to withstand heavy wear and tear over time.

3. Choose the most cost-effective options There’s a perfect balance between quality and cost and we strike it every time to create lasting yet costeffective kitchens for our clients. For durable, high-quality that is cost-effective, opt for quartz for your worktops and full plywood for the carcass of your cabinets. Emma is passionate about designing beautiful yet durable kitchens that satisfy everything that you want to use it for and one that you love for as long as you call it your home. If you want your kitchen to last:

LOVE ALL THINGS METALLIC? INTERIOR DESIGNER LESLEY TAYLOR ON HOW TO INCORPORATE THE MOST SHINIEST OF MATERIALS INTO THE HOME

2

F

or some, the current craze for using mixed metals as a decorative feature in the home can be daunting.

Especially if previously it’s only been used for the most practical of homewares, such as taps and pans. However, I would urge anyone intimidated by this most versatile of materials to give it a go. My golden rule, as always when experimenting with a new look, is to start small.

1. Metals everywhere, including the walls thanks to Sanderson: Pineapple Royale wallpaper 216326 - £62 per roll - stylelibrary.com/Sanderson (image courtesy of Sanderson) 2. The Baked Tile Company’s Metal Element collection means floors can get in on the look too 3. Experiment with different metallic hues to find the perfect shade for your home 4. The Radison cast iron bath in polished aluminium from Imperial Bathrooms will hit all the right style notes

4

Choose a homeware that is relatively cheap, so you can play around with placement before committing. It’s also worth remembering that not all metals will look the same in your interior scheme, so try different metallics to see how they interact with the light and your existing colour palette. Might your lounge lend itself to a hint of warming copper or cool steel? Perhaps a cushion which incorporates a reflective metallic and ‘glows’ in the right light would look great on the bed? Once you’ve settled with the tone of metal you feel best suits your home, go for it. Start hunting out key pieces to add to your scheme. And don’t just stick to the high street, explore charity shops and salvage yards for unique pre-loved pieces with a distressed edge or two. Now you’ve plucked up your confidence and feel comfortable with your metallic accessories, perhaps you fancy going all out. And by that I mean the big ones – your walls and floors.

3

I’m not for a second suggesting you whip off your wallcoverings and replace them with sheets of corrugated iron. But instead, look to the furniture brands who incorporate metallic

78 SWANSEA LIFE

elements into their wallcoverings. Sanderson for example, pay homage to the Golden Pineapple – one of the most popular interiors accessories of the last few years – in their Pineapple Royale design. Incorporating golden hues onto a dark black background the striking design is playful but has an edge of sophistication to ensure it hits the right notes stylishly. In terms of flooring, porcelain tiles are proving to be one of the most versatile options on the market currently. And while they might not be made of actual metal, there are plenty of designs inspired by the material, including the Metal Elements collection from The Baked Tile Company. This collection of tiles covers an entire colour spectrum with pieces inspired by platinum, steel, copper and iron. And while they might look like metal, they have all the benefits of a tile meaning they are easy to maintain and keep clean. They are also extremely hardwearing so perfect for modern life.

Early winter cheer Hydrangea aspera

With Joseph Atkin, head gardener at Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire As the evenings draw in and the garden goes into hibernation one often feels it is all over for the season. However, this is not quite true. November and early winter may be quiet but there are some excellent garden plants for winter cheer. In larger gardens there are plenty of options. But in small or domestic gardens where space is a premium careful thought is required. The solution in smaller spaces is to choose plants that complement the spring and summer displays, while also offering something for the winter. Here are some options that we really would not be without at Aberglasney.

Viburnum davidii

Hydrangea macrophylla All Hydrangea, but especially the ‘mop heads’ and ‘lacecaps’ produce wonderful seed heads that last through the winter. The flower arrangers at Aberglasney are always using them and they look great in the frost. Some gardeners insist on removing them, but it is not entirely necessary. This allows them to be enjoyed through the winter months. These wonderful plants produce lovely summer displays while also producing architectural seed heads in the winter. They work well in most home gardens especially if you have acid soil. Today there are a huge number of Hydrangea to choose from and even dwarf patio style ones that work better in small spaces.

This low growing evergreen shrub is very common throughout the UK and for good reason. It has a slow growth rate and wonderful neat green leaves that compliment other plants beautifully. Throughout the winter it produces a combination of berries and flowers that last for months. There is however a secret to getting the best out of this plant which is not often mentioned. If you grow a male and female plants together you will guarantee that you get plenty of berries. For most of the year the plants look the same so they can be planted together to make a single display. ■  Height = 1m maximum ■  Spread = 1.5m eventually ■  Position/aspect = Any ■  Soil = Any except waterlogged ■  Pest and diseases = No real problems in the ground ■  Style = woodland, shrub border, exotic garden, potted display great for corners or edges

■  Height = 2m maximum ■  Spread = 1.5m ■  Position/aspect = Out of strong winds is best and avoid severe frost pockets ■  Soil = Acid gives you blue flowers alkaline gives you red/pink ■  Pest and diseases = No real problems ■  Style = Cottage garden, shrub border, hedge woodland

Acer griseum The ‘Paper barked Maple’ is a close relative of the Japanese Acer that we are familiar with and makes an excellent tree for a small space. Vivid red and orange autumn colour, neat green foliage in the summer with wonderful chestnut brown peeling bark all through the season make this an excellent source of winter interest. As it is a slow growing tree with a very nice umbrella shape it makes a great specimen tree for a small garden or in a mixed border. We grow this plant in a number of locations at Aberglasney where we want all year-round interest. ■  Height = 4m eventually ■  Spread = 5m eventually ■  Position/aspect = Any, including exposed, but not maritime ■  Soil = Any, except waterlogged ■  Pest and diseases = No real problems ■  Style = Specimen, mixed border, woodland, modern hard landscaped sites 86 SWANSEA LIFE

nterior designers have been predicting how we’re going to be dressing our homes in 2020. To find out how, we were behind the scenes at Top Drawer, the UK’s leading design-led trade event, where Louise Healy-Adonis – trend forecaster and senior strategist at Flamingo – shared her insider insights for the coming seasons. These items aren’t available to buy yet – but keep an eye out for designs inspired by these themes in stores and online throughout 2020. From the finest fabrics to brilliant basics, Healy-Adonis reveals the key features of 2020’s and how we can get the look...

1. Modern Relics A contrast of delicate and strong shapes and details, with mixed textures. The idea of 92 SWANSEA LIFE

unearthed antiques interplays with modern materials to create future heirlooms. “This trend sees classic shapes given a contemporary look through new digital techniques and traditional etched surfaces. Rich textures and luxe gleaming metals add sumptuous elements to rough and irregular black surfaces of unearthed pasts. Add finishing touches to the home to complement the trend such as cushions, glassware or vases,” suggests Healy-Adonis.

2. Introspection This trend sees muted inputs from our surroundings, dialled down into introspective subdued colours and calm tonal blocking. This is not stark minimalism – think meditative and calming with multi textures.

“Soft winter pales and warm neutrals create meditative, clean palettes that are grounded in natural materials,” says Healy-Adonis. “Mixed textures and serene scenes are seen in calm tonal blocking. Colours to invest in include whites, softened teals and olives, dusky pinks and light grey.”

3. Grounded Rituals This one’s all about a natural, earthy, tactile vibe that’s tied to nature and wellbeing. These everyday items are elevated through the craft of honest materials and the uniqueness of nature. Answering the need for quiet restorative rituals. “This trend brings the grounding of nature into the home through raw materials and handmade pieces. One-of-a-kind products are formed in metal accents, woven textiles and tactile wood. This restrained detailing and pared-back palette will enhance the sanctuary of the home,” Healy-Adonis notes.

4. Soft Assembly

6. Sublime Opulence

The retro modern feel combines reassuring nostalgia with playful rounded shapes and graphic prints. Imperfect outlines are key in mid-tone brights, anchored in rich navy and coffee tones.

Maximalism is muted with a restrained palette of deep blues and yellow golds. Plush velvets and textured metallics reference historical detailing and add luxury. “Tonal blues are still a key trend for 2020, moving into a more yellow tone, adding warmth, calmness yet opulence to the home,” explains Healy-Adonis.

“Irregular graphics will add the modern retro feel to the home. Look out for organic shapes with a sophisticated crafty feel. Look for dining wear, throws and decorative items,” explains Healy-Adonis.

“Historical detailing stylised with modern twists including gold-edged art prints.”

7. Industrial Organics 5. Bio Flux This trend speaks to the mix of organic and hyper-real, where natural looks sci-fi and bio-design is the future, today. Healy-Adonis says: “This scientific and sterile trend sees a mix of organic shell-like dark tones and iridescence modernise ombre styles. The unique and free-form nature of the materials offer interesting overlays of organic colours.”

This trend speaks to the in-between space of man-made and organic, of the chunkiness of old machinery, but with the ease and simplicity needed for an uncomplicated life. “With the focus on unfussy functional pieces, this trend includes asymmetric bold shapes contrasted with soft tones. Pale dusty pinks and mints, rust, ochre and blues are grounded by warm naturals and stark black,” suggests Healy-Adonis. SWANSEA LIFE 93

here’s always a buzz in the interiors world when Dulux’s eagerly-awaited new Colour of the Year is announced.

Now, the paint guru has revealed its chosen hue for 2020 – the lyrically named Tranquil Dawn, a cool, hazy tone of green. Dulux has also created four palettes – Meaning, Play, Creativity and Care – each designed to correspond with Tranquil Dawn, showing how the shade and various combinations can be used to create different moods and atmospheres. “A new decade heralds a new dawn, and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting, just when we need it most in our lives,” enthuses Marianne Shillingford, Dulux UK’s creative director.

So what exactly is Tranquil Dawn all about? “The new green palette is in tune with the interiors trend for strong green colours in the home, which has grown over the last couple of years,” explains Shillingford. “We’ve dialled down those deep greens and instead created a softer, more gentle, smokier shade.”

How will it work in my home? “It’s an easy colour to use, and ideal for people who are nervous about using colour in their homes. We’re generally a conservative bunch, so many people still have their reservations about bold colour, but Tranquil Dawn is so subtle and easy-on-theeye,” says Shillingford.

“We feel it will work for everyone and every style. “Rather than a stand-out feature colour, this is one which you could totally wrap around all the walls in a space and it would look absolutely beautiful. Alternatively, pairing it with neutral pastels or rich jewel shades can have a totally different impact.”

HOUSE & HOME

Why looks can be deceiving Jo Ridout takes a tour of a traditional terrace that looks nothing like you’d imagine on the inside and where a roof terrace and a kitchen fit for a TV cooking show are just some of the highlights...

F

rom the outside this double fronted home looks like an attractive but fairly typical Welsh end-of-terrace house. Inside, period features and standard sized rooms and decor await you, right? Wrong.

Because the owners of this home in Neath have thrown off the shackles of magnolia and tight spaces and really gone for it with their own obvious personal interior design style favourite - art deco - as well as a wealth of impressive feature such as a roof terrace overlooking Neath RFC’s ground and a modern, spacious kitchen that wouldn’t be out of place on a cool cookery show. Where once there were normal walls and doors there are room entrances framed by glass bricks, perfect for letting light flow through home as well 100 SWANSEA LIFE

as promoting the art deco theme. The little touches of black, grey and white assist in the visual look of the home, with a mono colour palette as a base very popular back in the 1920s when this design style was at the height of its popularity. And throughout its rooms there are several interesting visual touches that demand instant attention. This is probably most evident in the huge kitchen-diner at the rear of the property. Instead of the expected small kitchen and rear dining room of a terraced house, there is a large extension that provides a very sociable and light space. In this room the art deco basics are pretty much covered. There are colour LEDs hidden away that provide accent colours typical of the 1920s; think Miami sea-front home or cool American diner. The sunken ceiling provides the classic art deco lozenge shape as well as the space to hide the mint green accent lighting.

There are subtle curves included in the interior design , mainly provided by the unusual semi-circular kitchen island which also has hidden pink LEDs for the continuation of the Miami feel. There is symmetry provided by the black splash-back tiles, the triple set of French doors to the garden plus the inventive use of glass bricks again. The ground floor accommodation is vast compared to what any visitor might expect from the outside. There is a separate sitting room and dining room that could both become bedrooms, turning the home from a surprising five bed into an incredible seven bed property. This would still leave the house with a separate lounge and the large kitchen-diner. The versatility of this unusual home continues upstairs. In fact up two flights of stairs as, although not obvious from the outside, this house also has a loft conversion which has a surprise. Instead of a standard dormer, there is a window that continues down the roof to the floor to provide easy access onto a terrace that is the roof of the extension. Genius. Of course the view from the roof terrace is unusual. This house is brilliant at being unique, and looks out onto Neath RFC’s rugby pitch so no need to buy a season ticket, although some scrums might be missed due to annoying hedges in the way. Back to the first floor and the whole width of the rear of the property has been converted into a huge master suite. In fact, the master bedroom is so large it can easily accommodation a three-piece suite and has a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room bigger than most terrace home’s third bedroom.

The main bathroom on the first floor does not disappoint on the ‘wow factor’ either. Lit by a chandelier, the free-standing bath takes centre stage in the room, with feature alcoves built into the walls and lit from above to create multiple display areas. The rear garden is accessed from the house via any of the three sets of French doors in the kitchen -diner. This outdoor space has been paved, with raised planting beds contained by white washed walls. The central fountain and climbing wall plants bring an almost Mediterranean atmosphere to the outside space; a trip away from the centre of Neath every day for a new owner. And the final surprise this home has to offer is the huge double garage at the end of the garden. Located within walking distance of Neath town centre, there might only be a need for one car so this bonus building could also be used as a handy storage space and maybe even a workshop or hobby space.

ways to brighten up your conservatory If your conservatory’s looking a bit tired, try these ideas to make it a brighter and fresher space you’ll love to relax in If you’re lucky enough to have a conservatory on your home, now is the time to make the most of it - so you can bring the outdoors indoors, where it’s warm and dry. But if your conservatory isn’t quite as attractive as it once was because it’s old, or old fashioned, you might need to spruce it up. And while some conservatory modernisation ideas will cost a lot, others just involve a few easy tweaks which will leave your room looking much brighter, fresher and more appealing. Jane Stevens of Konservatory.co.uk, which offers design inspiration for conservatories and has just created a Conservatory Calculator (www.konservatory.co.uk/calculate-the-costof-a-conservatory) to help people work out how much it’ll cost to build a conservatory, says: “Although it may feel like a challenge to take your nice but boring and outdated conservatory into the modern age, there are ways you can do it - not all of them costly. There are some you can do in a day or two, and others that require investment and hiring professional tradespeople.”

Here, Ms Stevens, pictured, outlines eight ideas to brighten up your old conservatory.

1. Gorgeous greenery Conservatory plants are a great way to bring new life and a modern touch to your conservatory - and bigger plants can cover a multitude of sins. Plants have never been more on-trend - even some of the most popular fashion brands are now stocking decorative planters to suit all tastes. Filling your conservatory with flora brightens the space and keeps you very much in vogue.

2. Botanical blur Blur the lines between the interior and exterior by using botanical-inspired prints with lots of green leaves and a variety of white shades. This will give it a very natural and light look. Botanical prints are in and it looks like they are here to stay. What’s more fitting for your conservatory that neighbours your garden than bringing the outdoor theme in? These prints aren’t limited to traditional floral colours, you can even find fabrics in monochrome.

3. Transform your dining table If you’ve got a dining table in your conservatory, use it as a focal point for the whole room with colourful and seasonal tableware and tablecloths. You can help emphasise it more by keeping everything else subtle, or matching just one colour.

4. Go tropical For an exotic and spicy look, source a fabric with an outlandish leafy motif for the table runner, blinds and cushion covers and introduce a lot of lemon yellow, or add bold prints of orchids in different colours.

5. Brighten up windows People often overlook how much of an asset a window can be, and your conservatory is full of them. Statement blinds tie in colour schemes and add extra pizzazz, and bay windows provide the perfect opportunity for custom seating. Matching scatter cushions and blinds really make an impact with minimal effort. 108 SWANSEA LIFE

“For an exotic and spicy look, source a fabric with an outlandish leafy motif for the table runner, blinds and cushion covers.”

6. Be open to new doors A little secret that can change everything? Doors! Standard conservatory doors can look dated quite quickly, but bifold doors instantly transform a room. The change is almost unbelievable and really helps to make the room the hub of summer parties by effortlessly connecting your home and garden. Remember, if you’re changing the colour scheme too, you need to find doors in a similar colour or tone that will work with the new main colours.

7. Convert into a trendy orangery Traditionally, orangeries were grand buildings used to grow orange trees in large period homes, and they’re currently very trendy, as many homeowners like the privacy and luxury they get from a more orangery-inspired construction. There are many similarities between conservatories and orangeries, but instead of the corner posts seen in conservatories, orangeries have brick columns or pilasters, which sheltered the orange trees that used to be grown in them, a deep pelmet partially supporting the roof, and

a larger gutter. They also tend to be larger (and more expensive) than conservatories.

8. Replace the roof Conservatory roof replacements are easier than you might think, and are one of the most popular forms of conservatory alteration. You can modernise your conservatory virtually overnight just by switching out the polycarbonate roof, if it has one, for a glass one.

Glass, especially double-glazed conservatory roofs, helps to improve the use and investment of your conservatory in various ways including reduced heat loss, and self-cleaning glass, which uses the sun’s rays to remove debris and dust. Alternatively, you could opt for a real, solid roof installation, which adds a touch of elegance and helps to bridge the gap between your conservatory and the main house, as well as improving the heat retention and energy efficiency of the space. The perfect solution for how to make a conservatory into a room. SWANSEA LIFE 109

he surge towards electric powered cars is all well and good but one bugbear for drivers thinking of changing over is the cost.

While electric vehicles offer cheaper running and lower maintenance costs they are vastly more expensive than conventional petrol and diesel powered equivalent models. That’s all changed as the now Chinese-owned MG car maker really has put the cats amongst the pigeons by offering its first pure electric model – the compact five-door SUV ZS – from only £21,495. Admittedly this bargain price only applies to the first 1,000 customers who place an order with a £500 deposit – they will also be given a free home charging point installation – then even afterwards the asking price for the entry-level Excite model will be reduced from £28,395 by the government grant of £3,500. The top specification Exclusive model listed at £30,495 will also gain the same double whammy price cut if ordered within the same 1,000 first orders bringing that down to £23,495. It’s a clever piece of marketing because such aggressive pricing, even when the first 1,000 have been snapped up, still makes the ZS EV a more realistic purchase for family motorists looking to go electric. The other plus factor for buyers is that there is no waiting time for delivery as MG claims it will have a ready and constant supply of the electric-powered ZS, unlike most rivals where the waiting time for delivery can be many months. There is also the benefit of MG’s sevenyear/80,000 mile full warranty deal and on the ZS EV that includes the battery. The other more practical bonus for drivers who opt for this newcomer is that it has quicker recharging time than most rivals with 80% of the battery able

MG joins electric charge By David Ward

to be charged up within 40 minutes. The plug-in is simple too with the socket under the MG badge on the front grille making it an easy access. The other concern for motorists driving electric cars is the battery range – this MG ZS EV’s 44.5kWh battery claims to be 163 miles and up to 231 miles with just city driving. Although rivals like the Nissan Leaf offer 168 miles on ordinary driving and the Kia e-Niro a range of 282 miles the MG team believes the figures will stretch further over time. The single electric motor provides 141bhp of power along with 353Nm of torque providing a decent enough zero emission performance of 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds and with a claimed top speed of 87mph, more than enough to cope with motorway driving. The initial launch drive was a couple of hours run in and around the centre of London in heavy traffic where the ZS EV performed admirably enough. The acceleration was smooth and the car’s precise steering was admirable. Like the petrol ZS it has a comfortable, relaxing ride and there’s a switch near the bottom of the central console which allows the driver to choose the

levels of brake energy regeneration when lifting off the throttle. This works, although for the driver it may feel strange at first, and pleasingly there is practically no whining noise when driving the car quickly as evident on one or two of its rivals. The real test will come later when there’s a chance to drive this car outside of built up areas and on the open road. Any driver will appreciate the rotary style gear selector between the two front seats which provides the drive, neutral and reverse functions while a button in the centre of the dial puts the car into park mode. Like the ZS petrol model the interior is kitted out fairly basically but comfortably enough with a fair amount of plastic trim but it is a genuine five-seater with good boot space of 448 litres pushed up to 1,375 litres with the rear seats folded. There’s no cabin intrusion either from the batteries – they are all laid out underneath the passenger seats – and all the seats are comfortable offering decent all-round support. Both models are exceptionally well equipped with the Excite having 17-inch alloy wheels, air con, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, eight-inch infotainment screen with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and lane departure earning. Move up to the Exclusive level and in addition there are roof rails, an excellent panoramic opening roof, leather-like upholstery, heated front seats, blind spot detection, rain-sensing wipers and rear cross-traffic alert for when reversing out of a parking spot. Certainly the ZS EV is a bit of fresh air in the ever growing electric car sector and it will make its mark with its aggressive pricing policy that is sure to convert more drivers over from conventionallypowered cars. In reality they won’t be disappointed.

Puma returns to Ford fold – with a difference

A

Puma is back in the Ford line up and it’s a car with a difference that the Blue Oval brand hopes will turn the compact SUV market on its head.

Packed with innovation the new Puma breaks the mould for Ford with adventurous styling, a mild hybrid engine and an excess of family-friendly features.

class leading space of 456 litres. The thinking behind the practicality is little short of genius and sees cargo space transformed from conventional to one with a deep well below floor level that can be used for anything from wet and muddy clothing to increasing boot height enabling golf bags to be carried upright, a baby seat stowed or room for up to eight suitcases.

The Puma is based on the latest Fiesta platform and will be built in Romania alongside Ford’s other small SUV, the EcoSport.

There’s even a plug hole at the bottom so the area can be washed out if necessary. The luggage blind is also fixed to the tailgate and is soft enough not to cause damage when closing.

It slots into Ford’s SUV range below the Kuga and the Puma is more than two inches wider than the Fiesta as well as significantly taller.

As family cars go the Puma is absolutely user friendly and more space is available by dropping the rear seats.

It also has a longer wheelbase which adds up to a roomy cabin that can seat four adults with ease – five at a pinch.

Up front, the dashboard layout is familiar Ford with a central display screen for connectivity and sat nav but comes fitted with a 12.5-inch TFT instrument panel that includes an image of a puma on start up – the only visual reference to the animal from which it takes its name on the entire car.

But it is what’s inside the Puma that is going to set it apart and its features include zipable, washable seat coverings and a fantastically flexible boot system that offers

From the outside the Puma dares to be different and although it shares its underpinnings with the Fiesta it is much more roomy. Rounded body lines are another feature and there is a hint of Porsche Macan in the shape of the bonnet and front wings. A clever trick is the floating effect of the windscreen pillars and the individual headlight clusters which give the Puma distinctive looks from the front and side. The Puma will be powered initially by a range of Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines in various power outputs ranging from 95 to 155ps and the line up includes a 125ps mild hybrid. A 1.5-litre engine is planned for introduction later as is a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Ford last used the Puma name on a compact coupe model last built in 2002 but it was a car which gained a keen following during its five years of production.

The new Puma is due to be released in the UK early next year and is available to order now at Day’s Ford. For more information and to find your nearest branch, visit www.days.co.uk 112 SWANSEA LIFE

WHAT’S ON

Byrne baby, Byrne TV favourite Ed Byrne brings his latest sell-out fringe show and biggest tour to date to Swansea’s Grand Theatre next month. Peter Slee has been to meet him ahead of his visit

A

household name teetering on the brink of national treasure status, awardwinning comedian Ed Byrne enjoys worldwide acclaim for his stand-up.

With 25 years under his belt, he has parlayed his on-stage success into a variety of notable television appearances. But the Irishman is still best-known and best appreciated for his stand-up performances. A quarter of a century at the comedic coal-face has equipped Ed with a highly evolved story-telling ability and a silky mastery of his craft. Yet his wit, charm and self-deprecatory observational humour is often underpinned by a consistently hilarious vitriol and sense of injustice at a world that seems to be spinning ever more rapidly out of control. Having recently hit a new peak with shows such as the sublime Spoiler Alert and reflective Outside, Looking In, which explored the minefield that is modern parenting and a generational sense of entitlement, Ed’s new show ‘ If I’m Honest’ digs ever deeper into a father’s sense of responsibility, what it means to be a man in 2019, and whether he possesses any qualities whatsoever worth passing on to his two sons. Occasionally accused of whimsy, If I’m Honest is a show with a seriously steely core. Gender politics, for example, is something Ed readily engages with – deploying his customary comedic zeal. “I’ll admit that there are things where men get a raw deal,” he says. “We have higher suicide rates, and we tend not to do well in divorces, but representation in action movies is not something we have an issue with. It was Mad Max: Fury Road that kicked it all off, even though nobody complained about Ripley in Alien or Sarah Connor in Terminator 2.” Of course, social media means this stuff gets broadcast far and wide in an instant, which emboldens people. “The problem with men’s rights activists is that it’s not about speaking up for men’s rights, it’s about hating women. If you’re a men’s rights activist, you’re not going to care 116 SWANSEA LIFE

about the fact that there’s an all-female Ghostbusters remake. That’s nothing to do with men’s rights or female entitlement. That’s everything to do with being, well, a whiny baby.” As ever, Ed manages to provoke without being overly polemical, a balancing act that only someone of his huge experience can really pull off. “I did stuff about Trump and the Pizzagate right wing conspiracy,” he says, “and a couple of the reviewers said: ‘Oh, I would have liked to have watched a whole show of this’. And I think, well you might have, but the average person who comes to see me would not like to see that. I like to make a point or get something off my chest, or perhaps I’m talking about something that’s been on my mind, but the majority of stuff is just to get laughs. “People who come to see me are not political activists necessarily, they’re regular folk. If you can make a point to them, in between talking about your struggles with ageing, or discussing your hernia operation or whatever it is, you can toss in something that does give people pause as regards to how men should share the household chores.” He continues: “ It’s not that I feel a responsibility, I think it just feels more satisfying when you’re doing it, and it feels more satisfying when people hear it. When a joke makes a good point, I think people enjoy it. It’s the difference between having a steak and eating a chocolate bar.” Ed, who broke through in the mid-1990s when the New Lad became a genuine cultural phenomenon, doesn’t want to submit to any unnecessary revisionism, but admits that if the times have changed, he has changed with them. He reflects a little ruefully on one of his most famous jokes. “There’s an attitude towards Alanis Morrisette in the opening of that routine that I’m no longer comfortable with, where I call her a moaning cow and a whiny bint… slagging off the lyrics of the song is fine, but there’s a tone in the preamble that I wouldn’t write today.”

The new show also takes his natural tendency towards self-deprecation to unexpected extremes. “‘I do genuinely annoy myself,” Ed concedes. “But the thing about your children being a reflection of you, gives you an opportunity to build something out of the best of yourself only for you to then see flashes of the worst of yourself in them. It’s a wake-up call about your own behaviour.” When I challenge him over the degree of self-loathing he displays, he disagrees. “Self-aggrandising humour is a lot harder to pull off than self-deprecating humour,” he insists. “‘A lot of people get really annoyed when Ricky Gervais is self-congratulatory. I always find it very funny when he accepts awards and does so in the most bigheaded way possible. I think it’s a trickier type of humour to pull off, talking yourself up in that way. “So no, I don’t think I’m being massively hard on myself. The fact is when you’re the bloke who is standing on the stage with the microphone, commanding an audience’s attention, you’re in a very elevated position anyway.” That said, ‘If I’m Honest ‘brilliantly elucidates the frustration that arrives in middle age – and lives up to its title. “I’m bored looking for things, I’m bored of trying to find stuff, because I can never find it, and it is entirely my fault,” Ed says. “Nobody’s hiding my stuff from me. Although my wife did actually move my passport on one occasion.” He insists that, while the show might have mordant and occasionally morbid aspects, it’s also not without its quietly triumphant moments. “I thought I was being quite upbeat talking about the small victories,” he says. “You know, finding positivity in being able to spot when a cramp was about to happen in your leg and dealing with it before it does. I was very happy with myself about that.” Age, it seems, has not withered him. Especially now that he’s figured out how to head off ailments before they become a problem. “You see comics who are my age and older but are still retaining a level of ‘cool’ and drawing a young crowd. I can’t deny that I’m quite envious of that. But there’s also, perhaps, something very satisfying about your audience growing old with you!”

Broadcaster and writer Carol Vorderman MBE

Carol Vorderman to host the first National Children of Wales Awards A new awards event celebrating inspirational Welsh children will launch next year – and Carol Vorderman will host the inaugural evening. The National Children of Wales Awards will be held on Friday, April 3 and aims to shine a light

Ian added: “To be part of the recognition and rewarding of these remarkable young people is truly humbling for me. These awards will go from strength to strength and I’m sure will be the pride of the annual Welsh events calendar.”

It is important to shine a light on the incredible stories of courage by young people across Wales on the achievements of youngsters across Wales, while raising £100k for children’s charities. The awards have been founded and launched by Blanche Sainsbury, chair of Bluestone National Park Resort, and the Bluestone Foundation, the company’s charitable foundation. A gala dinner will be held at the Celtic Manor in Newport, hosted by Carol Vorderman and ex-Wales rugby player Ian Gough.

The event will feature Only Men Aloud, Welsh choir Angelica Celtis and Motionhouse, an internationally-acclaimed dance-circus company. The award categories will focus on diversity, bravery, courage, sporting achievements, and children who help others through championing causes, caring and fundraising.

“I am looking forward to meeting these inspirational young people and I would encourage the people of Wales to nominate those who deserve recognition. “We promise to offer them a truly amazing experience on a truly special night.”

Money raised from the star-studded gala event will be distributed to The Teenage Cancer Trust, Dreams and Wishes and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and the Bluestone Foundation. Pamela McNamara, founder of the Bluestone Foundation, said: “Our association with the National Children of Wales Awards is a fantastic opportunity to take our work to a new level.”

“Our aim is to shine a light on both the brave children of Wales, who overcome challenges every day, as well as some of the amazingly talented young people we have in this country,” said Blanche.

Carol said: “I am delighted to be involved in the first National Children of Wales Awards. “Special events such as this are so important to shine a light on the incredible stories of courage demonstrated by young people across Wales.

“It will be a glamorous and star-studded night with a number of high-profile Welsh sports stars attending, and many celebrities and special guests playing important roles during the evening. But, we need the support of businesses to make this a reality. I would encourage individuals and companies that want to get involved to visit our website.”

Ian Gough

“We want to recognise those who never give up, never stop trying – inspiring those around them in the process.

“The National Children of Wales Awards promises to be an unforgettable and inspirational evening from start to finish in the incredible venue of the Celtic Manor. Some 700 guests will help us celebrate the bravery and incredible stories of young people from across Wales – sharing their stories and achievements.

Full details of all the categories and how to enter can be found at www. nationalchildrenofwalesawards.org and anyone interested in sponsoring the awards, buying a table or donating an auction prize can contact Mark Hillary at: mhillary@bluestonewales.com

Too Young to Make a Will? Think Again! Rebecca Seldon, an associate solicitor in lifetime planning at JCP Solicitors, shares her advice on the importance of making a will at a fairly young age

Young adults often delay writing a will in the belief that they are not old enough or are not wealthy enough to need one. I know from my own experience of being in my late 20s, that embarking on a career and starting a family have been my main priorities. Putting plans in place for the potential end of my life has certainly not been at the forefront of my mind. It is not nice to think about our lives coming to an end, but the harsh reality is that life is not predictable and it can take tragic, unexpected turns in the blink of an eye. Making a will allows you to take control of your life in a way that supports your loved ones should the worst happen. If you do not make a will, the Rules of Intestacy will stipulate who gets what upon your death and the outcome may not be what you want. This can be devastating, particularly if you are in a relationship but are not married or in a civil partnership. In this eventuality, legally, your partner would not be entitled to anything upon your death if you were to die without a will but

could potentially claim against your estate. So, planning ahead is vital and it alleviates stress for your nearest and dearest. In your will you can: •

Set out who will deal with your estate when you are gone

Include guardianship provisions to detail who you would want to look after your children after you die. The care of children is, of course, a very emotive matter and it can lead to great friction if you do not address the issue

Set the age at which any children can inherit

Mitigate any potential tax liability for your estate

Set out your funeral wishes, though these guidelines will not be legally binding

Personally, I have found that taking control of

what will happen to my estate on my death empowering. I feel that in a small way, I have taken an extra step to make things easier for my family if I am not here. Here at JCP, we recommend that you consider reviewing your will every three years, or when your circumstances change. As you reach different milestones in life, such as when you purchase a property, have children, or get married, your wishes may change and these should be reflected in your will. The harsh reality is that no matter our age, none of us know what is around the corner and knowing that a will is in place can give you peace of mind that your wishes will be carried out when you are not here. We need to shatter the common misconception that wills are for older people in our society so that we plan for our families now.

TIME FOR YOU

TEWKESBURY PARK There is always something delightful about going to the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and which attracts 38 million visitors per year. Chris Peregrine joined them

 First impressions They generally count for something, and in the case of Tewkesbury Park form a fitting prelude to what lies beyond. It all starts with the sweeping driveway parting the 18-hole golf course which forms a major element of the 165 acres of undulating parkland, overlooking the famous site of the AD1471 Battle of Tewkesbury with stunning views of the Malvern Hills and Gloucestershire countryside. So you leave your car in a good mood and that is only enhanced on arrival at reception, with perhaps a smile on the way in as you notice a collection of colourful wellingtons and umbrellas should the elements dictate. You are now in prime position to witness the impressive results of the £10m makeover of the McIntosh family-run spa hotel.  Making a meal of it Mint, the hotel’s destination restaurant, has been wowing residents and visitors alike for the last year after this important part of the renovation programme was completed. Its name is faithfully reflected by a fresh

148 SWANSEA LIFE

and bright décor. The same could be said of the menu, directed by head chef Anuj Thakur. He is definitely one for working with the seasons, in fact going even further than that by changing the menu eight times a year and taking advantage of the finest ingredients from local producers. The mint theme remains intact throughout, with the help of the season’s relevant herb, so coming up is “Winter Mint”, featuring mint and sage. Alongside the seasonal offerings are dishes like Herefordshire beef with crispy potatoes, salsify, chestnuts, Brussel sprouts and a beef jus. Wine pairings are not a problem if you are so inclined. Menus presented to guests on thick cards, clipped with original antique brass bulldog clips on handmade wooden boards crafted from old wooden wine crates by a local cabinet maker are not the only nice touch there. A glass and antique brass balustrade respects the past in what is a contemporary restaurant which features clusters of fresh potted herbs adding to the fresh aroma.

 Bedding down King-size Hypnos beds and palatial bathrooms greet the occupants of the 93 bedrooms on site, nine of them in the historic suites which cry out luxury and which are named after key characters who fought in the Battle of Tewkesbury. You will find opulent slipper bathtubs in some. Little fabrics and soft furnishings are other features, all reflecting a countryside ambience.  Anyone for croquet? After a leisurely Sunday breakfast, the response was why not? The only issue was whether anyone knew the rules. A quick Google search put us on track and there followed an enjoyable half hour or so hitting wooden balls with a mallet through hoops for points. The accompanying putting green, adjoining the course but not used by the golfers who have their own near the opening hole, also saw some action.  Time to unwind There are probably sporting events which take more out of you than the aforementioned pairing, but on a weekend away you do not need an excuse to hit neutral. So next stop was the health club. A gentle excursion in the pool was followed by that well-known double act, sauna and steam room. Time to cool down again, then, and the outdoor hot tub was a welcome staging post. Pity there was not time to sample the cutting-edge gym, or even the squash and tennis courts. Returning to the relaxation theme, two new spa rooms add to the possibilities. Treatment is provided by the hotel’s beauty partner, Bath-based Natural Spa Factory, an independent, family-owned company which specialises in natural spa products. One word of advice. When you make your accommodation booking, do the same for spa treatment. Slots are quickly taken up.  If golf’s your thing The par 72 parkland golf course is, of course, a magnet for local members and hotel guests alike for good reason. It has impressed a few big hitters along the way, making the ‘must play’ list in Today’s Golfer magazine and being described in the National Club Golfer magazine as a

mini-Gleneagles. That would have made its designer, champion amateur golfer, international golf course architect, author and golf correspondent Frank Pennink a very proud man. The 6,579-yard course opened in 1976 and is supplemented by a nine-hole academy course, a practice range, a putting green, a pro shop and the all-important 19th hole.  We didn’t expect that Sunday lunch is a thing for many, but not at Tewkesbury Park. It’s anything but traditional there as a 11.30am to 3pm sitting suggests. For a brunch with a difference you need all the time you can muster to tuck into the buffet miscellany of savouries and sweets galore. When we were there the listing included curry, casserole, a fish dish, an all day breakfast, fruits, salads, a chocolate fountain, parfait, cakes, a meringue and triple chocolate brownies. Did I leave anything out? Probably. The Willy Wonka-themed extravaganza in mint was fun all the way.  What’s the hurry? Of course, there are attractions in the area like Sudeley Castle and Gardens and Rococo Garden in Painswick, but relaxing in the hotel itself will do for many. There is posh afternoon tea to enjoy, while the cocktail bar and lounges ooze class against a backdrop of magnificent views. An events suite, complete with a wood-fired pizza oven and terrace, may not be relevant to your visit, but is an indication that this is an all-round venue of substance.

Fact file Tewkesbury Park, Lincoln Green Lane, Tewkesbury, GL207DN. Telephone: 01684 272300. Prices from £125 a night based on two sharing. Visit: tewkesburypark.co.uk and check out the special offers.

PETER LYNN & PARTNERS

If someone close to you loses the ability to make decisions about their lives, what happens if there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place? If someone close to you loses the ability to make decisions about their lives, what happens if there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place? If your relative or friend loses capacity and doesn’t have one, there is still a way you could get legal help to manage their property, finance, health, or welfare. You will need to consider making a deputy application.

If you intend to be a property and finance deputy, you need to show you have the skills to make financial decisions for another person.

What is a deputy application? A deputy order is a court document that allows someone to manage another person’s affairs if they are unable to do so themselves.

What happens if the court grants the application? You get written notification of what you can and cannot do from the court.

In other words, if a person cannot decide something for themselves – often through a severe illness, brain injury, dementia, or severe learning difficulties – a family member, friend or carer can apply to look after specific aspects of the person’s life.

However, you must also report to the Office of the Public Guardian once a year, as it ensures the person for whom you care is protected, and you get the support you need to carry out your role.

What types of deputy application are there? You can apply to be a property and finance deputy or a health and personal welfare deputy, or both.

Ian Walker - wills, probate and trusts specialist talks this month about deputy applications

Who can apply to be a deputy? You must be over 18 to apply. Deputies are usually relatives or friends of the person involved.

A property and finance deputy will typically look after a person’s home, bank accounts, and investments, while a personal welfare deputy will usually oversee the person’s medical treatment and social care.

You must also pay an annual supervision fee after and a security bond if you become a property and affairs deputy. The level of the fee depends on how much supervision you need, £320 for general supervision or £35 for the minimal supervision of a property and finance deputy managing under £21,000. Read more here.

Personal welfare deputies tend to be appointed where family members disagree about care or where someone needs to make specific issues about something over time.

Why seek the assistance of a solicitor? Having someone on your side who knows the law and understands that your situation needs great empathy is a significant help when making deputy applications.

How do you apply? Application forms must be sent to the court with a £385 application fee – this is doubled if you want to be both types of deputy.

Solicitors can take you through the application, step by step, and make the process far less stressful. The legal costs can also be fixed to give you extra peace of mind.

If the court decides your case needs a formal hearing, you must pay £500.

For expert advice on this and similar legal matters, contact Peter Lynn and Partners for a free 30-minute consultation on how we can assist with your deputy application by calling 01792 450010 or email Advice@plandp.co.uk

The court looks at whether the person needs a deputy or another kind of help, and whether there are any objections.

The best new books to add to your november reading list A good book by your side is surely an essential... here’s Swansea Life’s pick of the best

 The Secrets We Kept

by Lara Prescott is published in hardback by Hutchinson, priced £12.99 (ebook £7.99). Available now The debut novel from US author Lara Prescott delves into the secretive Cold War world of CIA involvement in distributing Russian literary heavyweight Boris Pasternak’s Dr Zhivago, banned in the Soviet Union - seen as “not just a book, but a weapon”. From 1949, The Secrets We Kept covers the next decade by alternating from East to West, following both Pasternak and his muse as well as the women in the CIA typing pool, particularly

spy-in-training Irina and part-time receptionist and agent provocateur Sally. Slightly slow to start, the novel then draws the reader into the emotional lives of the characters and their ever-changing roles and personas, questioning not only what is banned in the East, but also in the West. No mere spy thriller, it is, as the typists say of Dr Zhivago, both “a war story and a love story... but it was the love story we remembered most”.

 Serotonin by Michel Houellebecq is published in hardback by William Heinemann, priced £20 (ebook £9.99). Available now Dying of sorrow, in a job going nowhere and a relationship that has stalled, Florent-Claude Labrouste decides to turn his back on his life by going ‘voluntarily missing’. Devoid of purpose, meandering from hotel to holiday cottage across France, the 46-year-old finds himself increasingly confronted by elements from the past he has tried to shed. Bouts of nothingness are punctured by observations of brutal, abusive sex and agricultural angst, while a newly released

anti-depressant renders him impotent. It’s hard to get on with a narrator who values a woman by the sum of her orifices, or who contemplates murdering his ex lover’s young son. His is a world of exhausting bleakness, where effort does not equal reward, where violence skulks behind every activity, where people try to insulate themselves through sex, drugs, or take refuge in nostalgia. An uncomfortable, if interesting read.

 The Institute

by Stephen King is published in hardback by Hodder & Stoughton, priced £20 (ebook £10.99). Available now The ‘King’ of American Horror’s latest offering, The Institute contains everything you would expect from Stephen King - an all-American hero ex-cop, a bright, supernatural, young child, and an evil doctor. But unlike many of King’s previous successes, it reads more like a ‘greatest hits’ mashup than a new masterpiece - a bonus-track for King fans. The “institute” in question is a sinister

government facility which locks up children and exploits their paranormal talents. It draws obvious links to the current scandal of America’s immigrant children locked up in cages. However, it could have done away with the laboured Trump references and still made its point.

 March Of The Moderates: Bill Clinton, Tony

Blair, and the Rebirth of Progressive Politics by Richard Carr is published in hardback by IB Tauris, priced £20 (ebook £14.04). Available now

The polarisation of the main political parties is a transatlantic lament today. In this book, the academic Richard Carr traces how New Labour and the US Democratic Party found their way out of such political wildernesses in the 1980s. His self-confessedly “top-down” account focuses on individuals and their intellectual development: only politicos will follow every name-drop, but

the narrative remains readable. Carr aims to distil the benefits of ‘Third Way’ politics, awkwardly shrinking the financial crash and Iraq into wider context. Carr’s story makes engaging history, but it remains to be seen whether his centrist lessons hold in an age when not just politics but also public opinion is polarised.

CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE MONTH

 Explorers

by Nellie Huang and illustrator Jessamy Hawke is published in hardback by DK, priced £16.99. Available now

Little explorers will be amazed and inspired by the adventurers featured in this book and how they have shaped the world today. From the explorers of Ancient Greece and the era of Christopher Columbus to astronauts and modern-day travel bloggers, author Nellie Huang tells the stories of more than 50 adventurers. Alongside the likes of Sir Francis Drake and James Cook, it also features

154 SWANSEA LIFE

less well-known intrepid explorers from around the world, all of whom have pushed boundaries. They all have one thing in common - enormous courage. It may be a bit detailed for the younger readers in the target seven to nine age bracket, but illustrator Jessamy Hawke helps bring these incredible human feats to life and shows what determination and a sense of adventure can achieve.
