Welcome ...

Welcome to the 2010 Swansea Marina handbook which is aimed at providing you with all the information you require for a pleasurable stay in Swansea.

Please take time to read the information contained inside which includes important locking procedures and safety information. With the marina staff working hard to ensure your stay goes as smoothly as possible, all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy all that Swansea and the Gower coastline have to offer. The Marina lies in the very heart of the City’s redeveloped and award winning Maritime Quarter and is

surrounded by restaurants, shops and marine businesses. We were the first coastal Marina to open in the Bristol Channel and we are one of the few Marinas in the UK to hold the coveted Yacht Harbour Association 5 Gold Anchor award. We are bordered by the City Centre on one side and our own sandy beach on the other. Road access is excellent London is about 3.5 hours away on the M4 Motorway and the rail service is to be recommended. The locks are manned by our experienced staff and access is almost continuous, except at LWST.

For those wishing to sail locally our area covers the beautiful Gower coast. There are lovely sandy beaches to anchor off and clear waters for swimming and diving: perfect for sailing. Further afield, Ilfracombe is about 4 hours sail to the south, whilst to the south west lies Lundy Island, with Padstow and the North Cornish coast beyond. Sailing west along the South Wales coast will bring you to Tenby and then Milford Haven.

Marina Manners and Etiquette Customers are asked to please tie their halyards back from the mast to avoid unnecessary noise in this mixed environment. Please do not pump bilge water or contaminants into the Marina. Your assistance in these matters is greatly appreciated by the management and other boat owners. Please note that there is a speed limit of 4 knots and young children should be supervised at all times for safety.

Swansea Docks All Marina users are reminded that we share the entrance to the river with the fairway for commercial shipping entering and leaving the port of Swansea. It is very important that all boat owners obey the rules laid down by the authorities and give way to commercial shipping at all times.

Entering and Leaving the Port All pleasure craft using the port must observe the rules governing the “Prevention of Collisions at Sea”, particularly when navigating within the dredged channel North of the S.W.I.G.G. buoy (South West Inner Green Grounds) to the harbour entrance. You are advised to approach the harbour entrance in the waters to the west of the dredged channel (where practicable). Large vessels entering or leaving the harbour must be given a wide berth at all times. All pleasure craft must be under power when in the vicinity of the harbour and should clear waters used by commercial shipping as soon as possible.

Port Regulations To seaward, vessels approaching the harbour will see 9 signal lights displayed in 3 columns of 3 lights. The centre light of the westerly column controls pleasure craft. When this light is red craft must not enter the river and should hold SW of the westernbreakwater. If in doubt call Swansea DocksVHF Channel 14, or Tawe Lock Channel 18. When the entry lights of the Tawe lock come into view, vessels should make radio contact for locking instructions and information from the duty lockmaster on VHF Channel 18. Call sign “Tawe Lock”.

Access to Tidal Locks All access from the sea to the Marina is through the Tawe Barrage Lock during the published hours. During busy locking periods a queuing system will be in operation. Vessels that do not make contact with the Lockmaster or disobey his/her instruction will not be given priority over other traffic. In the interest of every boat owner’s safety, it is of the utmost importance that the Lockmaster’s instructions are obeyed at all times.

Vessels leaving either lock must then transfer to the next lock’s VHF channel on approach and use the appropriate procedure above.

Tawe Barrage Lock – call sign: ‘Tawe Lock’ CH. 18 It is essential that all boat owners wishing to proceed through the locks or swingbridge operate a VHF radio. Vessels must call “Swansea Marina” on channel 80 before leaving their berth to request lock information and must remain listening on CH. 80 until passage through the bridge or lock is completed. When you require use of the Tawe Barrage lock you must call ‘Tawe Lock’ to request information and remain listening on CH. 18 until passage through the lock is completed. Do not proceed into the locks unless instruction has been given.

Important Notes Lock procedure Using the Marina lock Normal procedure for locking out through the Tawe Barrage lock is for the lock to be taken down on the hour and return to the river on the half hour. The first lock out of the day at the Tawe lock will be taken down at approximately 0710. The last Tawe lock in is half an hour before the close of business each day. Boat owners should be ready to leave their berth at approximately quarter to the hour to allow vessels sufficient time to enter the Tawe lock. Any deviation from the above will be at the discretion of the duty Tawe Lockmaster who will pay due regard to the volume of traffic and any other prevailing conditions. Any vessels not returning on the same day are required to inform the Lockmaster and Coastguard. Two holding buoys are situated downstream from the lock and may be used outside of locking hours. Great care is necessary at low water spring tides as there is a danger of drying out.

Blue Flag The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco足 label awarded to around 3100 beaches and marinas in 35 countries across Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean. The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management and safety and other services.

The Blue Flag Campaign includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators. Naturally Swansea Marina will be maintaining its high environmental standards and will be re足applying for the Blue Flag in 2010.

Gold Anchor Award The Gold Anchor Award Scheme has been established to improve the standards of facilities available to all boat owners. Marina Operators who are Members of the Yacht Harbour Association may enter the Scheme for assessment. The level of the Award ranges from three to five Gold Anchors. Any Award is a sign of a quality marina, whilst the number of anchors indicates the level of the facilities available. The Scheme is purely

voluntary and is designed to bring the industry to the forefront of boating and to encourage better standards. Swansea Marina was assessed under the Gold Anchor Award Scheme in 2009. We are pleased to inform you that as a result of our efforts to provide you with a first class and value for money facility, we were awarded five Gold Anchors.

More than a Marina... Swansea Marina has a unique combination of safe mooring facilities, wonderful sailing and enough activities to keep every crew member happy. Within a few minutes walk there are cinemas, theatres, restaurants, museums and a sandy beach. The town, which has a warm and friendly character all of its own, boasts a thriving market and covered shopping centre both of which are within easy walking distance of our facilities. For those who enjoy walking and cycling there is the long promenade to the fishing village of Mumbles, still a magnet for visitors and gateway to the spectacular Gower peninsula. The latter offers coastal walks, sheltered bays and breathtaking scenery. Locally, there are five golf courses to choose from and every kind of entertainment from quiet pubs to the town’s nightclubs which draw revellers from all over South Wales.

Swansea is just a few minutes from junctions 42 to 47 of the M4 and at just two and a half hours from Birmingham or an hour and a quarter from Bristol is uniquely placed for access from the Midlands and the West. An hourly train service runs from Swansea to Paddington. Many of our visitors have discovered the attractions of Swansea Marina as a release from long hours spent commuting to other sailing areas on the South Coast or the South West. Here you will be spoilt for choice of sailing area. Favourite day trips might be to Oxwich Bay, Three Cliffs or Ilfracombe – longer weekends or holidays might take in Tenby, Milford Haven, Padstow or Ireland. The wide sweep of Swansea Bay offers a safe and sandy playground for sailors where you

can forget the overcrowded waters of other resorts for a quiet afternoon spent choosing a bay to drop anchor. If you prefer the thrill of competition Mumbles Yacht Club offers a full racing programme and we can contact them for you. Our travel hoist and boatyard are run by experienced personnel and our staff are always on hand to give friendly advice. Please ring or radio ahead so that we can advise you of any special local events, weather or locking conditions. We know that once you have visited us you will want to return! Be assured that the warmest welcome awaits you and that we will do everything we can to make your stay comfortable, memorable and an experience that everyone will look back on as ‘the good times we had.’
