Swansea Grand Theatre is a vibrant performing arts venue situated in the centre of Swansea showing a wide variety of shows and exhibitions for everyone to enjoy. Its intimate atmosphere creates a magical experience for a wide range of ages and audiences. Since 1897, Swansea's Grand Theatre has been providing the public with a broad range of cultural, artistic and general entertainment events. This is why UNISON is disappointed to learn that Swansea Council is placing this at risk through the underfunding and outsourcing of this service. Swansea Council is trying to cut the funding and offload the Grand Theatre to volunteers and others through a Trust. We believe the future of the theatre is in jeopardy and could be outsourced as early as next spring. This outsourcing exercise could result in higher costs, reduced services or even the eventual probable closure of this historic theatre. Swansea Council states that the
Grand theatre is run by a “friendly, professional team of staff who are very keen to make sure that (each) event runs as smoothly as possible,” for the benefit of children, young people and adults across Swansea and further afield for nearly 120 years. This outsourcing exercise will have a big impact upon staff morale and may lead to job cuts and reduction or discontinuation of the amazing events held at the theatre. Whilst support from volunteers is important, UNISON believes that to offload the valuable responsibility of the daily running and management of Swansea Grand Theatre to them is too high a burden which would set them up to fail. Volunteers should be the added extra to enhance the service provided in the theatre rather than the basic foundation for the daily delivery of this historic feature at the heart of our city. UNISON would agree with the Swansea Council statement that “Swansea Museum is a real treasure house of the ordinary and the extraordinary from Swansea past and present. It is a focus for the future of the city and its people, as well as providing a visitor experience that many people find very enjoyable.” It is therefore extraordinary that Swansea Council is placing this at risk through underfunding and outsourcing of this service. With a free entrance charge there’s something on offer for everyone including talks, workshops, guided tours and film showings. However, Swansea Council is trying to cut the funding and offload the museum to volunteers and others through a Trust. We believe the future of
