UNISON believes that the future of the highly valued local leisure centers across Swansea are at risk of privatisation as early as next spring. Swansea Council is trying to cut the funding, withdraw local control of leisure services across the city and are seeking interest from a variety of companies (private, commercial and not for profit) to give them control of these services. Our local leisure centres across the city offer opportunities for all ages to swim, play and train. They allow people to get fit and stay active by providing space to play a wide range of sports, offering school holiday fun activities for children and young people and providing superb pools for swimming. However, this is all in jeopardy due to decisions made by the Council to underfund and privatise these services.
This privatisation exercise is likely to result in higher costs, reduced services or even the eventual probable closure of our local sports centres and pools at Bishopston, Cefn Hengoed, Penlan, Pentrehafod, Penyrheol, Pontarddulais, and Morriston. These sports centres and pools are staffed by an enthusiastic team of people who provide an excellent and valuable service and are committed to offering support, advice and guidance and maintaining a safe environment for all. This privatisation exercise will have a big impact upon staff morale and will lead to job cuts and reduction or discontinuation of the amazing activities and opportunities on offer across the city.
