COMBaT sTress suPPOrT Group hosted by HSUMD. The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert (HSUMD) has become a community center of activity that, among other things, recognizes and supports Veterans who have served our country. The ways HSUMD supports veterans are many and varied.

They include the establishment of a Veterans Memorial Building that displays and honors the stories of our local Veterans and their service. They include hosting a monthly Veterans Breakfast for all Veterans and their spouses at the Historic USO Building. And HSUMD hosts a regular gathering of a Combat Stress Support Group. Every other Wednesday evening, starting at 1800 hours at the Veterans Memorial Building located at 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd, the Combat Stress Support Group meets under the leadership of Dr. Jiselle Esparza.

A new program to give senior dogs a new chance at a life with dignity and loving companionship has been brought to the community of Ridgecrest. This new program is called One Last Treat and its mission is to provide comfort, friendship, and One Last Treat to senior shelter animals and effectively make an impact on the quality of life for shelter animals.

One Last Treat is a veteran founded Non-Profit Organization bringing comfort, compassion, and awareness to senior animals. Joel Rocky, the founder of One Last Treat, had the passion and foresight to see that the “soon to be passing” animals need an advocate and a voice. Joel is originally from Michigan and enlisted in the United States Navy in 2007, where he also met the lead team members of the One Last Treat program. The team shares Joel’s earnest desire for providing compassion, friendship and “one last treat” to those older and often lost and forgotten shelter animals. By doing so, he is making an impact on the quality of life of shelter pets and U.S. Military Veterans by such programs as “Vet Friend Till The End.” This program allows rescued senior animals to live out their remaining time with dignity and love and at the same time providing companionship and comfort to a retired veteran. Joel’s goal for One Last Treat is to not only benefit the animals, but to highlight the importance to provide proper treatment of animals in their final days to people and to communities.
