SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

We chat to Bronnley about how it remains one of Birtian’s favourite soap makers

TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF BRONNLEY? Bronnley was started by our founder, James Bronnley, when he was just 19 years old. After studying the science of soap making in Paris in 1883, he decided to return to England with ambitions to become a premium soap maker.

After borrowing £300 from a friend, he set up a small shed in Holborn and began to craft, produce and sell his luxury products. This legacy and the history of the brand always stems from keeping that level of innovation, quality and heritage.

WHY DO YOU THINK THAT BRONNLEY HAS SURVIVED? No doubt that it has to do with the quality of our soap and of course, the fragrance. The brand carries so many memories for people growing up so that nostalgia and fondness for Bronnley lives on from generation to generation. We have a very iconic core range of high-quality soaps and we’ve never sacrificed on the formula, and this shows through our loyal customer base. TELL US ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS AND PRODUCT RANGE? Our products have a very versatile ingredient profile. For example, our fragrances have a mixture of top notes, heart notes and base notes, which enable us to create the most layered and iconic scents. We include versatile ingredients to create scents that last.

Our soaps are more complex. We like to add Shea Butter and Almond oil for softness and lavish luxury.

DO YOU EVER COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE? The creative team has a real passion for art and nature, and we’ve used this to our advantage in the past by collaborating with like-minded illustrators and artists. As part of our contemporary collection, we worked

with award-winning botanical artist, Helen Campbell on our Iris & Wild Cassis, Pink Peony & Rhubarb & White Rose & Rasberry collections. We had such wonderful feedback from this, and we’re looking to work with more creatives in the future.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO THINK BRONNLEY IS A BRAND FOR THE OLDER GENERATION? We’re proud to be one of Britain’s original perfumery brands, we have a loyal customer base who have used our soaps for decades! We really cherish our older customers who are still buying and using the same soap today that they used when they were younger.

However, the Bronnley brand has a broad range of customers. Our beautiful limited edition Eclectic Elements collection, with bold, daring packaging and complex scents inspired by earth, water,

air, fire and aether, has enticed a new generation of young, curious customers wanting affordable, savvy, trend-led fragrances. WHEN DID YOU GET YOUR ROYAL WARRANT, AND HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS TO YOU? By 1943, word of Bronnley’s innovative, luxurious products had spread overseas, earning the brand the prestige status of ‘the makers of the best soaps in the world’.

This led to Bronnley to be awarded it’s first Royal Warrant; granted by King

George V1 and upheld by both the Queen Mother and Prince Charles. The most recent Royal Warrant is by the appointment of HRH Queen Elizabeth 11 on July 12th 1955.

We are extremely proud of our rich heritage and Royal accolades and enjoy a loyal, worldwide customer base as a result of this.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW COLLECTIONS OF THE HORIZON? There’s a very exciting collection coming, which fuses our love of nature and fragrance. We’re very excited to share this with our customers soon, and hope it will be worth the wait!

Recently, we took to social media to ask our customers what iconic products from the past they’d love to bring back, so we are looking into how we can do this in a very modern and sustainable way! The future

looks very bright for Bronnley.
