The Spanish infinitive, or base form of the verb, is divided into two parts: the stem and the ending. Many verbs end in ir. The verb escribir (to write) can be divided into the stem and base: escrib + ir. In order to conjugate a verb, you must change the ending in order to make the verb agree with the subject. To conjugate a regular ir verb, drop the ir ending and add one of the following: o, es, e, imos, ís, en. Here is the present tense conjugation of escribir : yo escribo tú escribes él escribe ella escribe usted escribe nosotros escribimos nosotras escribimos vosotros escribís vosotras escribís ellos escriben ellas escriben ustedes escriben

Here are some verbs that follow the regular IR verb conjugation pattern:

abrir – to open decidir – to decide escribir – to write subir – to climb, to go up

admitir – to admit describir – to describe existir – to exist sufrir – to suffer

asistir – to attend descubrir – to discover permitir – to permit unir – to unite
