FOREWORD: RWANDA CHAMBER OF TOURISM
WELCOME TO REMARKABLE
RWANDA A foreword by Aimable Rutagarama, Chairman of the Rwanda Chamber of Tourism.
Rwanda is no stranger to conservation, but over the last few years the country has fully invested in sustainable tourism. By substituting volume with value, we’ve reduced the pressure on our natural resources and national parks, whilst transforming the country into a high-end destination for conservation lovers with a magnificent array of eco-lodges and sustainable experiences. Rwanda is among the world’s leaders in conservation, with approximately 9% of the land protected by national parks, from the largest, Nyungwe National Park, to our most recent addition, the Gishwati Mukura National Park. We’re one of the few countries in Africa, and the world, to have abolished plastic bags altogether, and we’re proud signatories of the Montreal Protocol. Since the turmoil of genocide two decades ago, Rwanda has emerged as one of the world’s safest countries, ranking as Africa’s second safest country in Gallup’s 2018 Law and Order report. In terms of sanitization, our capital city, Kigali, is regarded as one of the cleanest in the world, while the country as a whole has proved itself a pioneer of gender equality: over fifty per-cent of ministers in our legislative assembly are women. We also continue to make advances in technology, with 4G connectivity widely available, and we have witnessed significant government investment in a range of modern facilities, including the Kigali Convention Centre, that did not exist only four years ago. The country boasts excellent road infrastructure, and impressive air connectivity to destinations including Amsterdam, Brussels, Dubai, and London. Removing these obstacles empowers private sector involvement, and has enabled Rwanda to gain official recognition as the second-easiest place to do business in
Africa, with business registration taking just six hours. All this and more makes Rwanda a standout tourism destination. The coronavirus pandemic has brought unforeseen challenges to Rwanda’s tourism sector. The Chamber of Tourism has been working to support businesses, and has played an effective role in transmitting government health and safety guidelines to members from all our associations, articulating the importance of washing hands, wearing masks, and implementing social distancing. With the aid of the Rwanda Development Board, our advocacy work has secured the allocation of 50% of the government’s Economic Recovery Fund to the tourism sector, helping to sustain business operations and retain employees. Our ‘new normal’ requires us to find alternative ways of doing business, and we’re now emphasizing to our members the importance of strategic marketing, strengthening our connections with consumers domestically, regionally and internationally. Looking to the future, Rwanda has set some ambitious development strategies. The country’s Vision 2050 aims to attain upper-middle income status by 2035, and high income status by 2050, which translates into achieving high quality livelihoods for all Rwandans. Tourism is key to the realization of this vision: the sector has created over 150,000 jobs in the last two years alone, and our continued success will, to a large extent, determine the future of the country as a whole. The tourism sector is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in the country, and revenues from tourism represent 21% of Rwanda’s total exports and 44% of our service exports. With this in mind, there remains much to be done, and we will continue to champion
policies that guarantee future investment. With that, and Rwanda’s vigilance in tackling the pandemic, we’re confident that despite uncertainty, we remain on track to ensure that business recovery continues in a positive direction, and to create an excellent environment for tourism to flourish in Rwanda. The Rwanda Chamber of Tourism is a coalition representing the interests of private sector actors within tourism and hospitality. Comprising the Rwanda Hospitality Association, the Rwanda Tours and Travel Association, the Rwanda Association of Travel Agencies, the Rwanda Hospitality and Tourism Educators Association, the Rwanda Community-Based Tourism Association, and the Rwanda Association of Safari Guides, the Chamber is mandated with advocating for, and reinforcing, an enabling business environment within Rwanda. Through its commitment to accountability, transparency, and a member-orientated service, the Chamber works to bring about profitable and sustainable tourism businesses, and to secure the country’s prosperity. c www.cot.org.rw

RWANDA TRAVEL GUIDE 2021
Discover the world with RwandAir
RwandAir is the ambitious African airline which punches above its weight - much like the country it proudly carries its flag for, Rwanda From humble beginnings the airline has stretched its wings and embarked on its aim to become the continent’s premier African airline. Based in the heart of Africa, RwandAir began operations on December 1, 2002 as the new national carrier for Rwanda, under the name Rwandair Express. In 2009 the fledgling carrier officially rebranded to become RwandAir, based at Kigali International Airport. Nearly two decades after its foundation RwandAir had developed its Kigali hub to offer customers 29 destinations with short and medium-haul flights across Africa, and long-haul destinations to Brussels, Dubai, Guangzhou, Mumbai, London and Tel Aviv. RwandAir invested to create a fleet of 12 aircraft and fuelled its bold long-haul, wide bodied expansion plans, with two Airbus A330s offering the airline’s customers a choice of three cabins, including international Business Class with fully-flat beds, for the discerning traveller. The airline also operates six Boeing B737s serving mid-haul routes within Africa and four Bombardier aircraft, providing essential fast regional connections to destinations, such as Nairobi. While the pandemic outbreak has clearly slowed down the global aviation sector,
6 | SBM - RWANDA
plans are well underway to develop a new airport for the ambitious African airline, to replace RwandAir’s present Kigali home. A multi-million dollar investment will see the building of Bugesera International Airport, featuring state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure to meet the requirements of the rapidly developing air transport sector of Rwanda. RwandAir has expanded to opening up Rwanda to new markets for both trade and tourism.
It has been particularly successful in encouraging the growth of tourism, especially for premium travellers looking to experience Rwanda’s beautiful unspoilt rolling landscape, game reserves with world-class hotels and its world-famous mountain gorillas. RwandAir has helped put Rwanda firmly back on the tourist map and acted as an ambassador for the country, through its warm and welcoming service - on the ground and in the air. Rwanda’s beautiful natural landscape, attracting visitors from all over the world, is cherished and celebrated by RwandAir. The airline recognises that air travel has an impact on the environment and is committed to reducing this by embedding sustainability in its operations. It daily works to reduce waste, remove any unnecessary weight,
RWANDAIR
constantly improve its fuel efficiency and take pride in helping to preserve RwandAir’s amazing environment. While sustainability remains RwandAir’s long-term goal, in the short-term it has had to tackle the challenges posed by coronavirus. To counter the spread of COVID-19, earlier this year Rwandan airspace was closed from March 20, 2020 to protect the airline and the country until flights resumed nearly five months later on August 1. During that time, RwandAir operated a number of repatriation flights and cargo flights to support exports and transport of essential medical supplies, primarily to London and Brussels in Europe and to Guangzhou in China. RwandAir ensured the liquidity of the business so it could emerge once travel restrictions were relaxed. With the safety and security of RwandAir’s customers and staff of paramount importance, a deep-
clean programme of all aircraft and airport operations took place while commercial flights were suspended. It also introduced world-class hygiene and safety protocols to protect customers and staff once operations resumed to rebuild passenger confidence to travel safely once more. When countries started to relax travel restrictions, RwandAir introduced a gradual return to service and focused on rebuilding its African routes first. The carrier is currently operating 20 out of its 29 routes, accounting for almost 70 per cent of the airline’s total network. With constant monitoring of its best performing routes, RwandAir has built in flexibility to respond to changes in market performance as the situation evolves. The resumption of long-haul routes is key to reinstating links between Africa and the rest of the world to enable the return of essential trade as well as business and leisure travel. Just recently RwandAir resumed long-haul flights to London and Brussels.
However, the airline has now connected Kigali with London’s Heathrow Airport, the UK’s biggest airport, to take advantage of a bigger catchment market for premium business and leisure travel and significantly improve the traveller experience. As the world slowly recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and the aviation sector adapts to the ‘new normal’, RwandAir has met the challenges head on, adjusting its network and operations to take account of the evolving travel restrictions. The airline will continue to dare to dream, look for new untapped markets and opportunities, grow once demand returns and ensure it is the beating heart of African aviation. RwandAir is based at Kigali International Airport, Main Building, Top Floor. P.O. Box 7275, Kigali Rwanda Tel. +250 788 177 000 Email info@rwandair.com www.rwandair.com

RWANDA TRAVEL GUIDE 2021
SPOTLIGHT ON
Relax and unwind or continue the adventure Take a second, reset your watch. Now you’re on Rwanda time. Step off the plane into Kigali International Airport. Feel the cool temperature. Look around you. Rolling in the distance, you’ll be able to see Mount Kigali – one of two mountains that provide the backdrop to this diverse and vibrant destination. Once you’re through customs, catch a moto-taxi into town. As you drive, notice the high-rise buildings and the bustling central business district. This is a city, and a country, on the move. More motorbikes whizz past – all the drivers are wearing their helmets, as are you: it’s the law in Rwanda. No horns are blaring. Things are peaceful, familiar. All around you, on the streets, the locals are smiling, welcoming you to one of the safest places on earth. Love to shop? Kigali has plenty to offer. You’ll be amazed by the immaculate streets during your short walk to the Co-operation of Trade and Promotion of Rwandan Art, Craft, and Culture (COOTRAC) in the city’s centre. Formed in 2007, 8 | SBM - RWANDA
this association of 22 stalls sells unique, hand-crafted Rwandan products, from masks to handbags. For something further afield, take another boda boda to the sprawling Kimironko Market, where you can sample the best local fresh fruit and vegetables, and buy fabrics and tailored clothing. Elsewhere, in Kigali’s southern district, you’ll find the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. Launched in 2007, this NGO provides education and vocational training to women, all funded through its stylish ‘Umutima’ clothing line, accessories, and fabulous home decor products. For a different perspective, head to one of the numerous art galleries dotted across Kigali. The city’s outskirts play host to the impressive Rwanda Art Museum, housed in the former Presidential Palace. Here, you can admire an exciting collection of artworks from across Rwanda and abroad, providing a glimpse into the development of Rwandan creativity from traditional times into the modern day. Or, for an alternative experience, try the Inema Arts Center. Formed in 2012, the center was the brain-child of two brothers
and self-taught painters. Today, in addition to showcasing a wide range of African contemporary art, the center is home to a collective of Kigali artists. Pop-in during the day for a quick visit, or sit down for a few hours at one of the eye-opening poetry nights, workshops, and innovative cultural evenings the center has to offer. Prepare yourself come nightfall as this peaceful city bursts into life with its impressive array of bars and nightclubs. Kick your night off at Dolce, a popular haunt for locals boasting inexpensive drinks and comfort-food meals, accompanied by television screens streaming live sports from across the globe. When you’re ready, take the short walk to the Cadillac Club. This glitzy bar is another favourite amongst locals and tourists alike, just make sure you’re dressed the part! A more relaxed atmosphere is available in Papyrus. Packed with foreigners, the upstairs bar is an ideal place to forge new friendships, before heading down to the club beneath to flaunt your dance moves. Expect significant noise! c
SPOTLIGHT ON KIGALI
Did you Know... Kigali has been named the world’s third-most environmentally friendly destination and was voted Africa’s cleanest city. Rwanda’s capital has banned the use of plastic bags. In May 2016, Kigali introduced car-free days on the first and third Sundays of each month as ways to encourage physical exercise and to reduce carbon emissions from automobiles.

WHAT TO DO IN RWANDA IMMERSE YOURSELF IN RWANDAN HISTORY Located in Kigali’s northernmost Gisozi neighborhood, the Kigali Memorial Centre pays tribute to the lives of the 250,000 people estimated to buried in mass graves at the site. When you arrive, pick up an audio guide at the entrance for a small donation. It’s worth it to learn about a tragedy that continues to live long in the collective memory. Once you’ve made your way around, step out into the Memorial Gardens – an opportunity to reflect on everything you’ve learned, and to pay your respects at the Wall of Names. Just make sure you take the time to stroll the gardens themselves, a testament to this country’s irrepressible beauty.
ADMIRE WORLD-CLASS ART Formed by two brothers in 2012 , the Inema Arts Centre has grown into a collective of artists across Kigali, bringing together painting and sculpture from across Rwanda and the globe into a single building in the city’s eastern outskirts. WHAT TO DO IN THE SOUTHERN PROVINCE
S E E R W A N D A’ S EXTRAORDINARY WILDLIFE Few places rival Nyungwe Forest National Park for biodiversity. Birds, butterflies, chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys are just four species present in the park, which encompasses some of the oldest extant rainforests in Africa. Lacking the fanfare of its Rwanda’s National Parks, Nyungwe represents a hidden gem of kinds, and is likely to be high on the agenda for more seasoned conservation-minded tourists. Visitors have a choice of 15 trails through the forest, among which the thunderous Isumo waterfall and jaw-dropping canopy walks represent particular highlights in a park also recognized as a haven for avid birdwatchers.
E X P L O R E A C U LT U R A L HIGHPOINT IN HUYE Established in 1912, the city of Huye was once known by the name ‘Astrida’ after Astrid of Belgium, Rwanda’s then-colonial rulers. With 1962 came independence, and the city has retained its position as Rwanda’s intellectual center, and today plays host to

the National University of Rwanda, site of the luscious Arboretum de Ruhande. The nearby Ethnographic Museum boasts an impressive display of artifacts including geological exhibits and collection of traditional clothing, and often doubles as a venue for performances of traditional Intore dancing. The city is also home to the country’s largest cathedral. Smaller and quieter than Kigali, it is the perfect place for a more relaxed engagement with Rwanda’s rich culture.
PAY Y O U R R E S P E C T S AT THE MURAMBI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL CENTER Despite Rwanda’s rapid transformation in the last two decades, the scars left by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide continue to weigh heavily in cultural memory. The Government has gone to great lengths to ensure that such a tragedy is not easily forgotten, and the Murambi Genocide Memorial Center represents perhaps the most striking example of that work. Estimates of the lives lost at the former technical school of Murambi range from 27,000 to 40,000, and the scale of that loss is here on
full display, with some of those murdered having been fully exhumed and preserved. Needless to say, Murambi is not for the faint hearted, but for those who make the trip, it is a harrowing reminder of the nottoo-distant past.
Also in the Southern Province: • Learn about local history at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza • Admire Rwandan art at the Rwesero’s National Art Gallery. • Cycle the 227km Congo Nile Trail, starting in Rubavu

WHAT TO DO IN THE EASTERN PROVINCE SEEK OUT THE BIG FIVE Two-and-a-half hours from Kigali, and a world away world away from the forested western slopes of Volcanoes and Nyungwe, the undoubted highlight of Rwanda’s Eastern Province is Akagera National Park. Boasting a vast expanse of dry savannah, the park has played host to the so-called ‘big five’ since 2017 – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo – while sunset boat tours offer a magical experience, giving visitors the chance to spot hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and the park’s 500+ species of birds. Conservationists will be drawn to the park’s impressive selection of wildlife tours, where visitors will have an opportunity to meet with park rangers, and to learn more about the excellent restoration work that has taken place in Akagera since its near-decimation in the early 1990s. Make sure to book in advance.
GET YOUR FEET WET Situated to the south of Akagera, on the Kagera river that separates Rwanda from neighboring Tanzania, are Rusumo Falls. What it lacks in height, it makes up for in the sheer weight and velocity of its cascade of water. Naturally, visits during the wet season offer the best chance of
catching Rusumo at its best. The optimum vantage point is actually located half-way across the border crossing, but it is no hassle to walk out for a quick picture.
Also in the Eastern Province: • Catch a boat across Lake Mugesera

TA K E A B O AT R I D E ON TWIN LAKES If you have your own transportation, it’s worth taking a drive to the outskirts of Musanze. There you can find the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo. The former is the larger of the pair, though the scenery they offer is much the same: a breathtaking array of terraced hills and small villages, set against a backdrop of the towering Virungas. A mere 600 meters separates the two lakes, but this covers an astonishing 100 meter drop in altitude. In each case, boat rides across the water offer unparalleled access to birdwatching, including kingfishers, cranes, and the delightfully-named hamerkops.
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN TRADITIONAL R W A N D A N C U LT U R E Home to a number of excellent local organizations, including Red Rocks Camping and Hostel, the Hands of Hope Organization, and Amahoro Tours, the charming Nkotsi Village presents its visitors with inauguration into Rwanda’s fascinating traditions and cultural activities. Witness traditional Intore and Ibyivigo dance, and learn about local and traditional musical instruments. Take drumming lessons, or meet experts in basket-weaving, banana-beer-brewing, and plant cultivation, as well as traditional herbal medicines. Alternatives include the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. Also in the Northern Province: • Delve into underground universe of Musanze Cave • Test your archery skills with a traditional bow at the Gorilla Guardians Village
WHAT TO DO IN THE NORTHERN PROVINCE M E E T A D I S TA N T R E L AT I V E The Virunga Mountains are often regarded as Rwanda’s most popular attraction, and for good reason. Ascending to an altitude approaching 15,000ft at Karisimbi, Africa’s 5th highest peak, this magnificent range of volcanoes forms a natural border between neighboring Uganda and DRC. Housed within the confines of Volcanoes National Park, the Virungas provide ample opportunities for climbing and trekking, kicking off from the town of Musanze, only a two-and-a-half hour drive from Kigali. And no trip to Volcanoes National Park is complete without an up-close encounter with the park’s famous mountain gorilla. 18 | SBM - RWANDA
Placed are limited and tend to get booked up months in advance, so anyone keen to catch a glimpse of humankind’s elusive cousins will have to act quickly. Journeys vary in length, with appropriate pricing options, and are best undertaken during Rwanda’s more manageable dry season between June and September. But whatever your preference, the rewards are phenomenal.
Other key attractions in Volcanoes National Park include: • Golden Monkey tracking, • Visiting the Bisoke crater lake, • The Dian Fossey Grave trail.
WHAT TO DO IN RWANDA
WHAT TO DO IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE EXPLORE SECRET FORESTS Gishwati Mukura National Park, Rwanda’s youngest national park, is another conservation success story. Formalized in 2015, the main attraction here is the park’s diverse range of fauna, the product of dramatic improvements in reforestation efforts over recent years. Chimpanzee tracking is another main draw, while birdwatchers can keep an eye out for some 84 species of birds. Other residents include servals, red river hogs, black-fronted duikers, and multiple species of toad and chameleon. Accommodation highlights include the rustic Gishwati Lodge, comprised of 6 forest lodges that put visitors right at the heart of the park’s diverse range of flora and fauna. Reaching Gishwati is easy, situated only a two-and-a-half hour drive from nearby Kigali.
R E L A X AT T H E B E A C H Situated at the edge of Lake Kivu (stunning enough to warrant a trip in its own right), the relaxed town of Gisenyi sports a seductive strip of sand, and offers an ideal

opportunity to rest weary legs after a nearby gorilla trek – perhaps at New Tam-Tam Bikini Bar and Restaurant, a popular beachfront hangout. A range of accommodation options offer water sports and boat tours out across the lake. For a more rural experience, nearby Rubona Peninsula offers a vision of Kivu at its finest. The beaches here are scattered about a rocky shore,
but it is an idyllic swimming spot, while the accompanying hot springs promise a quick cure for any lingering ailments. Also in the Western Province: • Sip fresh flavours at the Pfunda Tea Factory • Chill out in the quiet backwater-city of Kibuye

In recent decades, the combination of war, poaching, the destruction of habitats, and disease contributed to the decline of Gorilla populations, falling to an all-time-low of just 242 individual gorillas recorded in the Virunga Massif in the 1980s. However, following extensive collaboration between governments, local communities, and NGOs, mountain gorillas within Rwanda have staged a remarkable recovery. As of 2016, the latest count revealed that there are now approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas in the wild, with 604 of these living in the Virunga Massif.
MOUNTAIN GORILLAS
These numbers comprise a total of twelve fully-habituated mountain gorilla families, with another eight families habituated for scientific research. A notable success story of conservation efforts worldwide, the hard work of all those involved experienced its crowning moment in 2018, when the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reclassified the species from “critically endangered” to “endangered”. Tracking gorillas in Rwanda is safe and relatively accessible, with almost 17,250 visitors making the journey to Volcanoes National Park in 2019 alone. In the interest of preserving mountain gorilla populations and habitats, the issuing of tracking permits is heavily regulated, with only six tracking permits issued per troop per day. For visitors to Volcanoes, this makes for a unique and unforgettable experience. Tracking sessions begin from Kinigi, the headquarters of the National Park. From there, visitors can embark on hikes lasting anything from 30 minutes to four or more hours, reaching an altitude of between 2,500m and 4,000m. Throughout the experience, porters are on hand to carry backpacks and cameras, as well as to offer a helping hand along the route. Since 2004, the Rwandan government has sought celebrate its successful work in the restoration of mountain gorilla populations with the holding of its Kwita Izina ceremony, held annually on 24 September, a date recognised internationally as World Gorilla Day. Kwita Izina – meaning “to give a name” in the national language, Kinyarwanda – involves the giving of a name to the year’s cohort of new-born baby gorillas. A significant highlight of the Rwandan calendar, the ceremony features music, dancing, and discussion about Rwanda’s great strides in gorilla conservation, and the great challenges that remain, all geared towards the objective of further promoting values of conservation, biodiversity, and encouraging environmental sustainability. A total of more than 300 mountain gorillas have been named over the course of the ceremony, which in 2021 is set to enter its seventeenth year. Kwita Izina continues to contribute to Rwanda’s ambitious strategy to preserve its natural heritage and further expand the role of tourism in the country’s transformation. c

WORLDS APART Rwanda’s national parks don’t begin and end at Volcanoes. Looking for iconic wildlife, biodiversity, and unique cultural activities? Make sure you explore everything Rwanda has to offer.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
26 | SBM - RWANDA
The story of Akagera National Park is a remarkable one. The restoration of peace in Rwanda following the 1994 genocide saw refugees returning to Rwanda in huge numbers. As people turned to the forests for survival, deforestation began on a mass scale, and species including lions and rhinos were hunted to local extinction, to be replaced with cattle farms. As biodiversity declined, the impact was felt across Rwanda’s employment levels and tourism sector. All this changed in 2010, when the management of Akagera passed to the African Parks Organization, in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). It was only a matter of time before the so-called ‘Big Five’ soon returned, so that Akagera
now serves as a model for the potential of conservation efforts worldwide to regenerate seemingly-lost natural habitats. In 2017, the park celebrated the return of 18 eastern black rhinoceros after a 10-year absence, closely followed by the translocation of two new male lions to boost the diversity of Akagera’s growing pride, which has now tripled in size since their initial reintroduction in 2015. With the return of its wildlife, Akagera has regained its place as one of Rwanda’s top tourist attractions. From 8,000 visitors in 2010, the park welcomed 44,000 people in 2018, including more than 2,000 school children, teachers and local leaders as part of environmental education programs.

NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
For an alternative but equally-enthralling experience, why not try Rwanda’s newest national park? Located in Rwanda’s Ngororero and Rutsiro districts in the country’s Western province, roughly a three-hour drive from Kigali and near the impressive Lake Kivu, Gishwati-Mukura National Park occupies an rea of 13.7 square miles, playing host to an unmatched diversity of plant life, including over 60 species of trees. Comprised of both the Gishwati and Mukura forests, it is yet another park whose history is riven with tragedy. The area was occupied as a refuge in the mid-1990s for those escaping the brutality of Rwanda’s genocide. Farming, deforestation and illegal mining followed, but 2015 saw the passing of a law to instigate the region as a joint national park. Gishwati-Mukura was announced in 2016, with the aim of boosting Rwanda’s tourism industry. Today, it provides a home for a big number of Rwanda’s safari-wildlife species, but is particularly regarded
for its wide variety of primate species. Sighting here include Chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, golden monkeys, white and black colobus monkeys. Avid birdwatchers also have the opportunity to spot up to 232 species of birds, among them Albertine Rift endemic species and forest specialists. Visitors to the park are also able to participate in a number of community-based activities, including a farm stay, live cultural dancing, handicraft-making, beekeeping, and tea and coffee experiences. Other parks to visit in Rwanda include Nyungwe Forest National Park, and Volcanoes National Park. c

RWANDA TRAVEL GUIDE 2021
In 2014, Dr. Olivier Nsengimana, a veterinarian, founded a conservation project to protect the endangered grey crowned crane in Rwanda from illegal trade. In 2015, Dr. Nsengimana developed this initial project into the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association, which researches and protects endangered and threatened species across the region. We spoke to Dr. Nsengimana about the RWCA’s work. “Rwanda is one of the most density populated countries in Africa. As a result, there’s huge competition for resources between people and wildlife. The wetlands that form the cranes’ natural habitat are in high demand for people to grow food, while the threats of illegal wildlife trafficking and the huge demand for the pet trade have further devastated wild crane populations in the past, which were pushed to an estimated low of just 300 in 2012-13. The primary work of the RWCA has been to address this situation, protecting wild crane populations by halting illegal trade and protecting key habitats. To do that, we’ve adopted a holistic approach. The organization has implemented a range of activities, from confiscating captive cranes 28 | SBM - RWANDA

and reintroducing them back into the wild, to working with law enforcement, running nationwide school campaigns, as well as campaigns on radio and television, as well as habitat restoration. We’ve built up a network of conservation centers across the country, with individuals positioned in local communities whose responsibility it is to train and educate their colleagues about the importance of the environment and conservation. A key pillar of our work to revitalize wild crane populations has been our Umusambi Village sanctuary and nature reserve. The Village is a 25-hectare piece of land situated within the capital city of Kigali. Prior to its
30 | SBM - RWANDA
life as a nature reserve, the land was being used for unsustainable purposes, but since the RWCA commenced ownership we’ve worked to expand the vegetation, transforming the area into a home for cranes that cannot be re-introduced into the wild, whether because of ill-health, permanent injury, disability, or habituation issues. Thanks to our work, we’ve ended the illegal trade of cranes in Rwanda, and we’re confident that population numbers are now travelling in a strong direction. As of this year, we counted 881 cranes throughout the country, nearly twice the number in the wild when we first started to count back in 2017. Over the last couple of years, we’ve begun
to diversify our operations, with work to save Rwanda’s flying foxes – including research, conservation work, and raising awareness about how we can successfully coexist with the species. We’re bringing the same approach to our work with the African grey parrots and shoebills. As we look ahead, our target is shifting towards how we can make Umusambi Village a more sustainable business venture, generating income that can be fed back into expanding and improving our conservation efforts. There’s a common misperception that responsibility for conservation falls with certain people, whether it’s governments or NGOs like the RWCA. This isn’t the case. The RWCA believes strongly in the need to establish a culture of conservation, putting communities at the heart of our strategy and restoring a concept of ownership, whether we’re talking about grey crowned cranes, or any animal species. We know that we won’t succeed in the fight to protect our wildlife and respond to climate change without bringing everyone on board and showing people the difference we can make in our own lives and our communities. By focusing on the little things, together we can have a big impact.” c
RWANDA WILDLIFE AND CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION (RWCA)
SPOTLIGHT ON UMSAMBI VILLAGE Drive only ten minutes from Kigali International Airport and you’ll arrive at Umusambi Village. A vital part of the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association’s project to protect Rwanda’s grey crowned cranes, the Village is a 21-hectare nature reserve providing a sanctuary for cranes that cannot be re-introduced to the wild. A combination of marshland and grassland, the Village provides an area within the capital city where people can visit to learn about the cranes and the RWCA’s ongoing conservation work, and be inspired to adopt a more eco-conscious attitude to their own surroundings. As well as cranes, Umusambi Village caters for a number of species including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. The Village fulfils an important role within Rwanda’s economy and tourism industry, creating jobs among local communities in maintenance and conservation, and offering a case study for similar sanctuaries
across Rwanda and Africa in best-practice conservation and species management. All proceeds from visits to the Village go towards funding ongoing care and veterinary expertise for the RWCA’s disabled crane population, upkeep of the site, education for local children about wildlife conservation, and supporting wider activities to prevent illegal poaching and wildlife trafficking. Visit https://umusambivillage.org to learn more, plan a visit, or donate. Opening times are 8am to 5pm (last entry 4pm), with additional morning and evening tours available on request.

INVEST IN RWANDA Rwanda offers an exciting opportunity for anyone looking to conduct business in East Africa. The country boasts a burgeoning middle class, and a population of over 11 million people. Since 2004, the Rwandan economy has experienced consistently high growth, with an average above 7% year on year increase in GDP. Rwanda is making great strides towards its Vision 2050, which seeks to transform the country into a high-performing upper-middle income country. Doing business in Rwanda is straightforward, and following years of substantial government investment and policy innovation, the country now ranks as one of Africa’s leading MICE destinations. Rwanda is a participant member of several intergovernmental regional organizations including the East African Community (EAC) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), bringing together over 160 million and 430 million people respectively. The country also boasts one of the most streamlined business registration procedures worldwide, with the potential to register businesses within six hours through the Rwanda Development Board’s One Stop Center for investment. 32 | SBM - RWANDA
As recently as 2015, the Government of Rwanda revised the laws surrounding investment, with the aim of encouraging direct foreign investment and driving economic growth across a range of key strategic sectors including energy, transport, affordable housing, ICT, and financial services. This revision included the introduction of a range of new incentives that further underline Rwanda’s position as a future business hub. Benefits to investors include visas, work permits, utilities, land and construction permits, and tax-related services, including exemptions from capital gains tax, and zero corporate income tax for companies planning to relocate their headquarters to Rwanda. In line with Rwanda’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, all investment projects with the potential to affect the environment are required to undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) prior to authorization. Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali, is widely recognized as the cleanest city in Africa, and sports a high level of political security and public safety, ensuring a premium environment in which investors can do business. c
