A wee while back Queen Elizabeth talked of an Annus horribilis. I think last year was like that for many folk. A year of getting smacked about. Shoved in a barrel and rolled down a steep hill. A steep hill with a few bumps! Is it behind us? As an eternal optimist, I bloody well hope so! I’m backing positive attitude along with a forward looking mindset that will replace much of the doom and gloom that surrounded the world through 2009. I saw a lot of admirable character in people over the year. In fact, for myself I learnt an awful lot, much of it from young cowboys. About when you fall, you get back up. You dust yourself off. Grit your teeth. Get going again. Let’s go. There’s a fair bit of travel in this job, but over the past 12 months I really poured on the miles. I was lucky too. Lucky in that I got to meet some of the most amazing people on the face of the planet. People who took time out to share with me their everyday adventures. Some of the things we got up to were perhaps a touch crazy… while others may not be considered extreme at all. However, I found all were challenging and incredibly self-rewarding. Dave Abbott, an exceptionally talented cameraman from Whangarei, came along for the ride as we tested ourselves around the globe. We filmed seven outdoor Swazi adventures and are in the stage of editing those right now for TV. I reckon they’re pretty darn spectacular and I can’t wait to show them to you. Why film them? I guess the answer lies in the fact that I wanted to illustrate to people, both young and old, that

Each year we are lucky enough to become involved in so many aspects of our outdoor community. Sometimes it is in the form of sponsorship of an event, or a team. From time to time it’s some keen individual who has tickled us with their tenacity, gall or outright self-confidence! One thing is for sure. Fun is a guaranteed component of any project involving SWAZI®. When we asked Davey about this year he replied, “Diverse.” Which upon reflection really sums it up quite nicely. Young people played a big part yet again in where we went and what we did, with Davey giving talks across New Zealand to Agriculture ITO graduates down in Alexandra, The Maori Womens Development Inc. at Otaki, National Bank Business seminars, plus about twenty other venues. Full on yet again! SWAZI® also got out and sponsored many events and organisations, The Mt Lyford Farmers Challenge – along with the kids run too! SWAZI® Junior Deerstalkers shoots happened throughout the nation and a very cool event was judging the Levin Palmers Giant Pumpkin Competition. In between filming seven episodes of his upcoming TV series, Adventures in Wild Places, Davey managed to get in the odd bit of training and competed as an individual in the Speights Coast to Coast. “Thank goodness I had a clothing company sponsor me in that event.
