I’d love to be able to brag here how I recently attended a big wedding held at Westminster Abbey. Alas, somehow my invitation arrived too late for me to change my plans of heading up the bush for the weekend with a good mate… such is life. Perhaps they’ll give me more notice for the christening! Certainly the year provided the world with plenty of challenges, not the least for manufacturers who still strive to make products here in New Zealand. My Dad always told me as I was growing up, if it didn’t kill me, it would make me stronger. I’ve got the feeling my strength is in abundance overload about now thanks very much. At SWAZI® HQ we felt the obvious plan to follow in such tumultuous times would be to become more precautionary, insular and conservative. Not being ones to follow the obvious plan we set about designing and building some really cool, and very radical garments. Oh what the hell, it’s what we do!

Everyone knows if you want the very best in garments to keep you dry, then SWAZI® is the answer. Our wet weather gear is legendary. Our big challenge was, how do we make it even better? How do we make it even more durable, even more breathable? How do we take the very best in performance and, through innovative technology and creative process, construct the next generation of wet weather fabric? A tall ask indeed! Yet over the past 30 months, in collaboration with Bruck Textiles of Australia, that is exactly what we have been doing. To say we are excited by the results is an understatement. To be honest, keeping the whole project under wraps has been a real mission. When you have something this good you just want to yell it out. The timing is now right and so we’re rapt to be able to finally share the news with you in this years Cattledog®. Late in 2011 our new fabric, SWAZIGUARD™ will roll out. Awesome!
“I’ve tested my new SWAZI GUARD™ garment in some bloody atrocious conditions and I’ve been super impressed. On ya SWAZI®.” Shayne Parry
Our New WOOLOFT ™ Insulated Jackets & Vests Are Absolutely Sensational! We’ve taken all the inherent traits of a wonderfully natural product, then enhanced the raw fibres with the use of smart Kiwi technology, creating an insulation that not only performs extraordinarily well, it feels fantastic to wear. If you thought crossbred wool was just good for carpet or rug manufacture, stop right there. WOOLOFT™ garments will change the way you think about wool.
The wool we use is a fine crossbred blend of about 26cm3/gms bulk. (bulk is measured in cubic centimetres per gram.) This is the natural “Bounce” in the fibre. In effect, each fibre is like a small spring. The wool is blended and scoured, then carded into a “Sliver”. The sliver is then passed through several liquid vessels in an initial wet process in preparation for crimping. These vessels contain a solution which both shrink proofs the fibre and virtually eliminates fibre migration and felting (so the wool will not become like a blanket after continued wear). It is then dried before being crimped under a dry steam heat, packed in bales then ”Set” in an autoclave. The mechanical crimping process adds approximately 30-40% more bulk to the wool. “Bulk” allows a lighter weight batting (roll) while maintaining loft. It is the loft which traps air and acts as an insulator, giving excellent warmth retention. The outer shell of our WOOLOFT™ garments is SWAZIGUARD™, a totally windproof yet highly breathable fabric, Luxury…

THE SWAZI® LAYERING SYSTEM
DRESS WARM! DRESS DRY! DRESS SMART! At SWAZI® we reckon we know what we’re talking about when it comes to outdoorwear layering systems, so we thought it was about time we shared this with you. The SWAZI® Layering System has been tried and tested time and time again over the years for its effective performance and durability, in some of the most extreme conditions and toughest terrain on the planet. In our eyes, and those of our customers so far, there’s nothing to match it!
1.BASE LAYER This Is the layer you wear next to your skin. It is important this layer can wick away moisture. By doing this it ensures your microclimate (the thin layer of air directly next to your body) remains at a constant temperature, around 32-33˚C. If perspiration is allowed to accumulate on your skin, it chills down - you will become cold through conductive heat loss. So stay away from base layers such as cotton, which will not wick away moisture. SWAZI® Climbmax® and Microfleeces are absolutely ideal Base layers, both of which provide great comfort.
6
We take it upon ourselves to keep searching for new and innovative fabrics, attending shows around the world to ensure what we produce is either always at the cutting edge of technology or in our opinion, utilising the very best in trims, fabrics and construction. We never ever give up listening to you, our customers, and relating your experiences into improving our garments, no matter how small the improvement might be.

3.OUTER LAYER
Also known as the insulating layer, these garments are worn over your Base layer. The key to warmth, and hence comfort, is stay dry and trap warm air within your clothing system. Make sure your Mid layers provide room to move without being too loose a fit. Ideally you will want it to maintain as much contact as possible with your Base layer. Trap air and don’t let it get away! If it is really cold you can always quickly add another layer to your Mid layer system. As well as polar fleece and heavier microfleeces (over 200gsm), windproof fleeces also make great Mid layers.
SWAZI® Micro Top. Made from a superfine microfleece, the Micro Top manages moisture while also making a superb thermal base layer. It is cut for a snug fit on your torso, shoulders and lower back – 3 areas on your body requiring more warmth, yet designed with slightly loose sleeves to allow air to circulate better on your upper arms.
SWAZI® Hasbeanie. Keep your topknot warm! That is one of the first rules. You can lose a lot of body heat through your extremities such as head and hands. A fleece beanie is great for maintaining a warm head, even in light rain.
SWAZI® Micro Pants. Again made from SWAZI® microfleece, these pants are super comfortable and exceptionally high performing. While the pant is very light it is incredibly tough. They will keep you warm while wicking away moisture very effectively, drying quickly even after a deep river crossing!
SWAZI® Bushshirt. A medium weight polar fleece shirt, this wee number performs incredibly well as a Mid layer.
SWAZI® Merino Wool Socks. Wool socks are without doubt the best for your feet, and Merino is the best of the best. SWAZI® have a range of socks from lightweight Adventure Socks through to the all new rugged Farm Sock.
SWAZI® wet weather garments are legendary around the entire world for being, well quite honestly, for being the best there is. We know weather and we know how to build crafted garments. At the end of the day, you are always going to get what you pay for.
SWAZI® Steevos. Made from a heavier 200gsm microfleece the Steevos, while a Mid layer, also act as a Base layer due to their marvellous ability to wick moisture and maintain your microclimate at comfortable levels.
The Outer layer or Shell has a big job. It is your first line of defence against wind, rain, sleet and snow. Whatever the elements choose to send at you on any given day, your Outer layer must be prepared to stop it. So, what will do the job? You need a garment which is totally waterproof, not just by fabric, but by DESIGN! It should be cut to move in, not restrictive, yet not too full either. You don’t need it catching on every passing branch or fence.
SWAZI® Rainjacket. Totally waterproof, windproof and breathable. A great water shedding hood with excellent peripheral vision. Long tail for a dry backside! Abrasion resistant fabric with both internal and external pockets. A classic Outer layer.
SWAZI® Rain Pants. 100% waterproof fabric, seam sealed, reinforced legs, excellent movement.

SWAZI DESIGNED WINDPROOF GARMENTS GIVE YOU THE BEST IN PROTECTION, COMFORT AND STYLE. Using WL Gore’s WINDSTOPPER® fleece, we’ve created a range of clothing that is completely windproof yet is still very breathable. In fact they are among the most breathable, totally windproof garments on the market.
Windproof fleeces offer major benefits over regular fleece. The ultra light Membrane in WINDSTOPPER® fleece provides complete protection from wind while remaining very breathable (two and a half times more breathable than other wind-proof fleeces) – allowing perspiration to pass through the fabric with ease. Garments made from WINDSTOPPER® fleece are lightweight, less bulky and twice as warm as those made from standard fleece.

With such a wide variety of fabrics available, why do we continue to choose GORE-TEX® fabric as our mainstay in waterproof breathables? It’s simple really. We find GORE-TEX® fabric is still one of the most durable, waterproof and breathable fabrics out there. The microporous ePTFE membrane used in GORE-TEX® fabric contains nine billion pores per square inch (you can count them if you like…) Each pore is 20,000 times smaller than a raindrop but 700 times larger than a water molecule. This allows body vapour to pass through but keeps out the rain, wind and snow.
Low-waisted for friendly use with waders.
Rain and wind cannot penetrate the membrane
Outer fabric has a durable water repellent finish
Base fabric
Moisture vapour (perspiration) passes from inside your garment through the membrane and outer layer
GORE-TEX® membrane
Very breathable GORE-TEX® membrane
Durably waterproof
Choosing a waterproof fabric is crucial to the performance of your garment, but of just as much importance is the design of the garment – to ensure that water will not pass through seams or closures. All SWAZI® garment designs have been stringently tested and passed by a rain-room laboratory, as well as been tested in the field before going into stores, thus guaranteeing the waterproofness of your garment. All that, plus GORE-TEX® outer-wear is backed by the Guaranteed To Keep You Dry® promise. SWAZI® wet weather garments offer you increased: durability, warmth, waterproofness, breathability, comfort.

What does it take to make the world’s best horse riding coat? That’s a very tall and audacious statement! Let’s tell you why we believe this is the best coat ever made for horse riders and you decide for yourself. The back gusset covers the saddle.
To begin with, we made the coat totally waterproof. That may sound a simple thing, but the fact is there is not much else out there anywhere near as waterproof as a SWAZI® Dryrider. Then we added attributes missing on our competitors garments, things like wind proofness coupled with breathability. For 18 months we tested, innovated and re-tested. Fine tuned fit and versatility. Crafted superb features in all 5 pockets, built an internal cuff system, adjusted the length and then attached the legendary SWAZI® hood. SWAZI® Corporate is one of our fastest growing divisions. We supply a large number of organisations with high performance clothing and equipment for their staff. These organisations seek to improve the safety, comfort and productivity of their personnel, as well as to enhance their own corporate image. We understand comfort and perhaps even more, we understand any gain to productivity goes straight to the bottom line. In our experience, gains of 30%, 40% and even more in productivity are often the norm. If you invest in great staff you’ll want to unleash them in the field. We’d welcome the opportunity to help you design and create garments to inspire, protect and motivate the people who make your organisation productive and profitable. It’s a fact. Well-designed, functional working apparel helps identify staff in the field and creates a positive team spirit amongst team members. Most importantly, while it keeps them warm, dry and safe, it also keeps them operating. In many cases there will be an “off the shelf” solution to suit our clients. In other instances we may have to design from scratch. This can involve researching the particular operational needs of the client, sourcing fabric from global suppliers, producing prototypes and monitoring garment performance in the field. We are able to assist in all aspects of ensuring your garments are engineered to fit within current legislation and comply with the acceptable industry and governing standards.
WOULD YOUR COMPANY OR ORGANISATION BENEFIT FROM A GAIN OF 30% PRODUCTIVITY? 26

Twice the “mortality signal” went off on her collar (which happens if the collar does not move for 8 hours) and we rushed out there to find a very live and active tiger, which prompted us to christen her “Christina”. Deep snow probably restricted her winter movements, but in spring/ early summer she started exploring, and moved west and a bit north on the western edge of the Sikhote-Alin Mts, before settling in to a home range.
Dear Davey and all at Swazi,
Shelley McMurtrie on the Beeman boardwalk.
Out ‘n About with SWAZI ® Over the years we have been actively involved in assisting a wide cross-section of our outdoor community. While there have been so many teams, individuals and events that have truly inspired us, there are two groups which really do tickle us. One, of course, is working with young people and the social responsibility SWAZI® assumes to nurture their curiosity, passion and knowledge. The other is the group of professional advocates who quite often spend their entire lives unfolding or protecting the amazing mysteries of our flora and fauna across the planet. Why do we do this on a global platform? Because quite simply, we believe at SWAZI®, while we are residents of one country we are citizens of the world.
Pretty heady goals! One thing some of the older hands knew from past experience (some of the scientists had been involved in research on the island for over 40 years) was the weather could sometimes be unpleasant. Read, REALLY REALLY BAD! As well as base layers, SWAZI® donated One Tough Muthas and Sistas for the team to see them through their 9 weeks. Here’s an excerpt from Shelley McMurtrie’s on the CIBE Facebook page… “A box of goodies turned up today so there was excitement all around when we opened them up to check out the range. The SWAZI® guys had sent us different sizes of the jackets and tops they are giving us as well as a range of other items that they thought we would find useful. Time for a fashion show.”
She has a GPS collar on her, so we get locations from her on a 3-hourly basis. On Dec. 21 I got a call from the Wildlife Dept. wanting to know where Christina was - a hunter had been attacked by a tiger, and reported seeing a collar on it. He also reportedly shot the tiger in self-defence. Since three other tigers had been released in the general area with collars (another story), it took most of the day to figure out that in all likelihood it was Christina, and now she was out there - perhaps dead, or at least wounded and
dangerous as only a wounded tiger can be. We gathered our gear and left for that region at 8 pm for the 5-hour drive, got some sleep in the nearby village, and headed out the next day to the site. As we got a signal from Christina’s collar, and her GPS locations coincided with where the incident occurred, we were now sure it was Christina. That first day we talked a local timber crew into driving their skidder to where Christina lay, in hopes we could get a look at her from the safety of the cabin. Despite multiple attempts, Christina kept moving away from the skidder, and we never got a good sighting of her - while frustrating, it was a good sign. The hunter had claimed he had been tracking a wild boar and a tiger had attacked him “out of nowhere.” Retracing his steps the next day told quite a different story. Out hunting, he saw signs of a kill (probably ravens flying) and headed towards it. Perhaps he saw Christina or only fresh tracks, but he understood that a tiger was just ahead of him. He hurried after her, right in her tracks. The snow was deep, and it was hard going, but this hunter was determined. He had a couple of dogs that may have been pestering Christina as well. After 2 km, Christina was lying down to rest, and after about 2.5 km he had caught up to her. She took off at right angles to the direction she had been heading, and it

out the order to go shoot her. But instead we monitored. Tracking her steps after being shot there were good signs. While the first bed had lots of blood in the chest area, the second bed after the incident was already free of blood and it appeared she was walking normally. Christina stayed put for a couple of days, healing up, and then over two days, returned to her kill she had been initially disturbed off. Unfortunately, there was nothing left there for her. She moved slowly, only a few km a day, but on Dec. 31, she gave chase to roe deer – she did not catch it, but her tracks in the snow showed long, healthy bounds - a good sign! Then Jan 1, she stopped moving - either a good sign (she’d made a kill) or a bad one (she’d run out of gas). We waited, and finally, on Jan. 5, she was moving again. We skied into the area to find just the head and legs of a young wild boar. And it was “Swazi” (as our crew dubbed the 4WD Hilux from New Zealand) that got us close enough to ski into the site and find the remains that Christina left behind. So the little wild boar skull I am proudly holding in my hand in these photos has great significance, as it represents the possibility that Christina will live. It appears that Christina has arisen again. And the poacher - well, word is, this is not the first tiger he has tried to kill. But listen, he is ALSO not a bad guy. Unemployed in a small village, with a wife and two kids - doing the only thing he knows how to - to try to feed his family. This story is really a classic example of the true conflict between tigers and local people - there are no bad people, and no winners here. But for the tiger, there is a ray of hope - that despite the need of poor local people to do anything they can to make a living, including poaching, survival of the tiger is possible, though each animal may indeed need 9 lives to do it!

One such group of people we got to meet and outfit recently were 11 scientists who headed down to Campbell Island, 700km south of New Zealand’s mainland, in the subAntarctic. The island is home to some globally unique plants and animals and the plan was to head there to study how the island was recovering from the world’s largest rat eradication programme. (SWAZI® readers may perhaps remember from our 2004 Cattledog® how we sponsored the raingear for “Jak the ratdog” when he travelled with handler, Fin Buchanan, to Campbell Island!) The expedition spanned nine weeks, with the science and management goals being to bring together the knowledge of Campbell Island from the past 200 years of occupation to assist in the island’s effective management and protection. This October a lucky Jon Palenski, who won the SWAZI® Trip of a Lifetime, will be winging his way to Africa with Davey. SWAZI® Out’n About wouldn’t be that without a cool kids story. Here’s one we loved! Maggie Hunt, who is 5, got her Dad Brendon to write in and ask for some SWAZI® gear in Pink... He was a little embarrassed, but eventually gave in to Maggie’s persistence and wrote a somewhat apologetic note to Davey. What a cool idea Davey thought! And so Maggie received her Micro Shirt and Hasbeanie in a beautiful shade of PINK. Then we made the mistake of mentioning it on the Clan Newsletter. Could we get one too, asked over a hundred little girls? We were stuck! So, we ended up getting more Pink fabric and made something like 130 sets. Davey even tells the cool story of flying in to a remote camp on Kodiak Island, Alaska and meeting a US hunter who casually said, “Mate, you made my little 6 year old’s day when you sent her that pink hunting gear!” 31
