UNDERSTANDING CURRENT STANDARDS & REGULATIONS
Standards:
Firstly, standards are created by Standards New Zealand. It is a self-funded, not for profit Crown-owned entity. The Standards which they create are voluntary. As an employer, you may decide how best to meet your obligations of providing PPE which is suitable and fit for purpose. To see what Standards will affect your industry and are to be met, you must pay them a fee.
Regulations:
Worksafe New Zealand is the Government agency charged with educating and enforcing workplace safety. They recommend employers adhere to the standards as published by Standards New Zealand. They assert it is the responsibility of employers and employees to manage workplace risks and ensure appropriate saftey gear, including hi-visibility clothing is used.
There’s a lot of information around about the current standards and regulations for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). We’ve collated this information and put it all into this easy to read document. There are three main types of high visibility clothing, they are:
CLASS D
These are DAY garments and thus confined to daylight hours only. Dusk and dawn are not considered daylightit’s recommended a ‘Class D/N’ garment is to be worn at such times.
CLASS D/N
These are DAY/NIGHT garments and are for staff who may be required to work under both times, day or night. If day work extends into night-time, or if there is poor lighting which requires traffic to use their headlights, the ‘Class D/N’ garment must be supplied and worn.
CLASS TTMC-W
Known as ‘Transit Approved’, these garments have been deemed certified compliant when wet for fabric colour, retro-reflectivity (reflective taping) company logo placement (yes, that’s crucial too) and garment design.
This testing is a combination of AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 and the ‘Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management 4th Edition’ (CoPTTM 4th Ed.).
While that seems to be a mouthful, it boils down to these garments being certified for TTMC-W, as well as being ‘Class D/N’, so they are suitable for day or night-time use on or near the roads.
Under the Health and Safety Reform Bill there is new legislation around the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU). If you need clarification on regulations, standards and compliance, please feel free to ring us for our input. If we do not have a ready answer for you we will do everything within our power to find one. Let us take some of the confusion out of the equation for you!
Swazi® hi-viswgarments have been verified compliant to meet guidelines of AS/NZS 4602.1:2011, under the above 3 classes.
HI-VIS WATERPROOF
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO STAY DRY?
When you are wet you are 24 times colder. Productivity? Hell, that goes straight out the window. Comfort and safety? Gone too. Fact is, while good quality wet weather gear obviously costs a few dollars more, it will pay for itself from the very first day it rains.
At the end of the day you only get what you pay for. At least with Swazi® that means you’ll cry just the once!

BUFFALO CAPE
The Cape Buffalo is one tough SOB. How could such a lightweight cape as this be so tough then? It’s the way we build them. Hand-crafted with care and double stitched seams with extra strength bar tacking on high stress points makes all the difference.
Long in the back for the rain to fall off, short in the front for working at full noise. The neoprene cuffs mean less water rolling down your armpits, while the collar has been cleverly engineered for wearing under a safety helmet and the hood is detachable. Tough? Better believe it.

How is it possible to improve safety while at the same time increase profitability?
It’s simple math. Output + Inputs = Productivity. When staff are wet, they are 24 times colder (yeah, we know we’ve said that before, but it’s so important that we’re stating it again). What if they were dry? Warm?
Safety gains produce productivity gains, which in turn increases your profit.
We design and test all our techincal garments right here in New Zealand. That way we can guarantee the integrity of fabric and functionality.
You can be assured when we say waterproof, we actually mean totally waterproof.
At Swazi we test our fabric and then we test the integrity of our waterproof seams. We remain one of a handful of manufacturers worldwide who do so.
BRAND YOUR SWAZI
The benefits of quality branded apparel are very real – the very core of your brand’s integrity is reflected in the initial presentation of your staff. It is so crucial to your business that your first brand impression be one of lasting quality.
We will work with your team to setup and create colourways so your logo can work alongside our Swazi label and garments. We are able to apply embroidery, printing or sublimate garments, to complete your brand’s presentation with quality workmanship.
Embroidery on wet weather garments can often compromise the function of the garment and cause leaking behind the stitching. Our in-house seam sealing can ensure this isn’t the case for your branded Swazi. Staff can keep dry while representing your brand in any situation.
