Welcome to Sadler’s Wells Welcome to our new Spring season at Sadler’s Wells. Having celebrated 15 years in our current building, I am delighted to mark this milestone by presenting a season of more dance than has ever been presented in the theatre’s 331 year history. Between these pages, you will find details of more than 40 shows over the next five months, offering an unrivalled home for dance anywhere in the world. It is a tribute to our loyal and generous audiences that we are able to offer such a busy season. Our mission has always been to provide quality and variety, and this season is no different. I’m excited to welcome back respected international companies, including the daring James Thiérrée, beautiful new work from Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan and an early work from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. The main house will also host some provocative and important new work from Europe, including Sadler’s Wells debuts from Boris Charmatz – whose work was seen at Tate Tanks last year – and Olivier Dubois, as well as returns for Alain Platel and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. This summer we will be celebrating with a revival of the spectacular Brasil Brasileiro to coincide with the World Cup, and the second season of our taster festival of dance, Sadler’s Sampled. Featuring world class dance at low prices, a proms-style standing area and a variety of free events, I hope you’ll come and enjoy this summer festival with us - and bring a friend too. As ever, our Associate Artists feature heavily in the new season, with exceptional work from Hofesh Shechter, Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant. I am also pleased to announce that we have appointed a 16th Associate Artist, the acclaimed Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite; be sure to catch her fascinating Tempest Replica in April. I look forward to seeing you in one of our theatres soon.

Director since 2009 of the Rennes and Britanny National Choreographic Centre, he maintains an extensive touring schedule, working on improvised pieces on a regular basis while also continuing his work as a performer with Tino Sehgal and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Having previously presented work at Tate Modern and the Hayward Gallery, for Charmatz’s Sadler’s Wells debut he presents the UK premiere of new work enfant. This creation explores an innovative style of choreography, utilising inert bodies, the relationship between muscular energy and movement, featuring a cast of nine adult dancers, 12 children and a musician.

Featuring an astoundingly diverse score including works by Beethoven, Debussy, Elgar and Brahms, it is a wistful elegy, dealing with nostalgia, childhood, life and death.

“When you're talking about Cloud Gate, magic is not too strong a word” TIME OUT

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan Nine Songs / Rice Friday 21 - Thursday 27 February Phenomenally acclaimed both at home and on their international tours, Cloud Gate was the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. Directed by the celebrated choreographer Lin Hwai-Min, they are known for transforming ancient aesthetics into thrillingly original performances that draw on diverse disciplines, and for their visually spectacular sets. Based on a series of classical Chinese poems by Qu Yuan, Nine Songs draws on ancient imagery and sensibilities to create a thoroughly contemporary piece, in which distant and recent pasts collide. Received to great acclaim across the globe, the dance reflects the cycles of nature, echoing the rich verses found in the original poetic text.

UK PREMIERE

Co-produced by Sadler’s Wells, Rice was created to celebrate Cloud Gate’s 40th anniversary, and is inspired by the landscape and story of Chihshang in the East Rift Valley of Taiwan. Previously tainted by the use of chemical fertilizer, this farming village has now regained its title as Land of Emperor Rice by adopting organic farming. Featuring folksongs in Hakka - the oldest among the existing Chinese dialects and operatic arias from the West, this is a stunning, thoughtprovoking piece of dance.

Kidd Pivot / Crystal Pite The Tempest Replica Friday 25 & Saturday 26 April A former dancer with William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt, Associate Artist Crystal Pite was the youngest person ever to receive the Clifford E. For its first visit to Sadler’s Wells since debuting in 2009, Pite’s Kidd Pivot company present its latest work, The Tempest Replica. Based on motifs from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Pite stages a game of revenge and forgiveness; reality and imagination, exploring these motifs in two contexts. Firstly, represented as an on-stage storyboard, with the plot points of the narrative delivered minimally through the gestures and postures of faceless chalk-white figures inside a maquette-like space. Secondly, the narrative is explored through a series of portraits – the characters and relationships manifested through fierce physical language and emotion, to produce a work of rare insight and innovation.
