2019 has been a very successful year for Swedish documentaries. Transnistra by Anna Eborn started off with both winning the Big Screen Award in Rotterdam and the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Documentary at ­Göteborg Film Festival. For the second year in a row a Swedish film won the Dox:Award at CPH:DOX, Ridge by John Skoog. Scheme Birds by Ellen Fiske and Ellinor Hallin had its World premiere at Tribeca Film Festival where it was awarded Best Documentary. Fredrik Gertten’s PUSH premiered at CPH:DOX and

has been travelling the world since then and scored awards. We will start 2020 with a Swedish Focus at FIPADOC and a lot of new interesting titles like; Greta by Nathan Grossman, about the world-famous activist, Stig Björkman’s film about the writer Joyce Carol Oates and Always Amber by Lia Hietala and Hannah Reinikainen, a film that will give us a unique insight into a new generation. Amber is a 17-year-old teen. Together with best friend Sebastian, they share a world far away from the judging eyes of the society as two queer youngsters. But when Sebastian falls in love with Amber’s girlfriend everything starts to fall apart. A story about trust issues starts to reveal itself and in the midst of it all Amber has to face going through their transition alone. In Always Amber we get a unique insight into a new generation.

Lia Hietala (born in 1993) started out as director’s assistant to Swedish director Ninja Thyberg in 2014. She has since then studied documentary filmmaking at Ölands Folkhögskola and directed two fictional short films; If I Say No (2016) and My Gay Sister (2017). My Gay Sister became a big international success and won the prestigious TEDDY Award at Berlinale, the world’s biggest queer film award. Hannah Reinikainen (born in 1992) has been studying journalism at the University of Stockholm and documentary filmmaking at Biskops Arnö. She has also been working as an editor and directed two short films; Nybohovsbacken (2016) and She Only Beat the One She Loves (2017). Always Amber is their feature debut.

Jerzy Sladkowski was born in Poland in 1945. He immigrated to Sweden in 1983. Since then he has worked as a freelance director and producer making over fifty documentaries. Recipient of several prestigious prizes including the European Film Award for Vendetta (1996), the IDA Award for Swedish Tango (1999), the Golden Dove for Vodka Factory (2011) and the VPRO IDFA Award for Don Juan (2016).

Charismatic Megafauna is a globe spanning odyssey, steeped in the tempo of the contemplative traditions. Through the eye of the free-floating witness, we observe life at work and leisure, in play and through hardships, from the shanty towns of Cape Town, to the Waura Tribe by the Xangu river, through the mist of the Atlas Mountains to the coloured night skies of Beijing.

Jesper Kurlandsky (born in 1977) produced the award-winning Avalon (2012), directed by Axel Petersén as well as Jesper Ganslandt’s Jimmie (2018).

In 2014 Patricio Galvez’s daughter Amanda and her husband Michael Skråmo left Sweden to join ISIS in Syria. Michael became a high profile warrior, recruiting through social media. In the beginning of 2019 Amanda and Michael were killed and left behind seven small children. Deep in sorrow over his daughter’s death, Patricio makes a pledge to save this grandchildren, even if it can cost him his life. The children are placed in the detention camp al-Hol, where conditions are life-threatening. The Swedish government refuses to make any decisions about the children, and the clock is ticking.

Gorki Glaser-Müller is a filmmaker, writer for film, tv and radio and a multi artist working with experimental formats such as VR. Gorki was born in Santiago, Chile in 1973 and came to Sweden as a 13-year-old. Since graduating from Valand Academy in Gothenburg, he has experimented with audiovisual storytelling in various forms. His first feature film was the critically acclaimed Once a Year (2013).

Fly so Far follows Teodora Vásquez and The Seventeen, the women accused of aggravated homicide in El Salvador for having had a miscarriage. The film is conducted by the story of Teodora, the spokesperson of the group, who after being imprisoned for eleven years was released in 2018 and became an activist for women’s rights. Her case has become the symbol of the extremism in the criminalization of abortion and the cruelty against women within the Salvadoran system, but also of empowerment, resilience and solidarity.

Celina Escher is a Swiss-Salvadoran filmmaker. She studied documentary film at the International Film School in San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) in Cuba. In 2016 her short film Motriz was part of the student selection at IDFA and at Poitiers Film Festival 2017. Her film Verde Olivo (2016) was shown at the Film des Femmes Créteil in France and also in festivals in Scotland and in El Salvador. In 2018 Celina’s short film Luz Para Ellas was screened at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in La Habana, Cuba. Fly so Far is Celina’s first documentary feature film.

In For Somebody Else, we follow three women on an emotional and thought-provoking journey as they borrow their bodies and carry someone else’s children. They invite us in, sharing their experiences with us; before, during and after pregnancies as surrogate mothers. With remarkable intimacy and access, the film captures the everyday lives of these women, including the exhausting routine of hormone syringes and doctor’s visits, as well as tensions in relationships with loved ones and, not least, with the recipient families.

Sven Blume graduated from Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Documentary Film. His recent works include Out by Art (2018), a collection of six Nordic short films, where he served as producer. Olof Berglind latest projects include a feature length documentary and four-part series about the iconic Millennium-author Stieg Larsson, called The Man Who Played with Fire (2018). The movie made a big buzz and was officially screened in the Swedish parliament, and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Last year he also developed and wrote the documentary Zlatan - for Sweden with the Times for pubcaster SVT featuring Zlatan Ibrahimovic speaking, nominated for Prix Europa.

Greta starts a school strike for the climate. With determination she wants to show the adult world that if they don’t care about her future on earth, why would she? In a few months her school strike evolves into a global movement and Greta goes from being a quiet Swedish girl to a world-famous activist. Nathan Grossman has followed her journey since the beginning of the strike, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.

Jacob Frössén (born in 1975) is a Swedish director and musician. His first feature documentary, the critically acclaimed En film om Olle Ljungström (2009), was produced by Story for SVT K Special and distributed theatrically by Folkets Bio. It was followed by the films Henric de la Cour (2013) and Sara-Vide Ericson (2014), in co-production with pubcaster SVT.

It is a place that is suspended in time. You cannot go forward and you cannot go back. Outside the little border village Idomeni a camp has emerged. When Nadia and Nawaf come to North Macedonia the border just closed. They have fled a genocide and their goal is Germany. In the camp they meet Yasir whose family is split up and his wife is a captive of ISIS. The different camps they pass become worlds of their own. The film explores the parallel lives of the children and the adults. Together the children reflect on small and big things and about their future lives.

David Aronowitsch studied film directing at the Polish State Film School. Examples of films Facing Genocide, 2010, (co-dir. The innovative animated docs Hidden (2002), Slaves (2008), and Sharaf (2012), co-directed with Hanna Heilborn, have been screened all over the world and has got many awards. Despite their cultural differences, Romanian beggar Florin and Swedish single mother Josefin share a deep longing for love and a better life and get married. Moving into a house in a Swedish village, they create a norm-beating life complete with chicken, pigs and a scrapyard. Florin’s friends and family visit from Romania, begging in the town center, and the locals start referring to their home as Little Romania. Florin studies Swedish and looks for work, but as the pressure from his family to send home money mounts, the relationship and their hopes for the future are put to the test. Ellen Fiske and Joanna Karlberg met during their documentary film studies at Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Joanna has made several films about migrants and Ellen’s films have often dealt with dysfunctional families. They now continue exploring these themes in their first joint feature documentary, Josefin & Florin.

Producer and designer of a 26-part TV series for the SA Channel Via, using viewer created content to tell stories about South Africans in the Diaspora.

In the film we meet John, 36, but we also meet him as a 16-year old school drop out through glimpses of archive material from the past. John grew up in the suburb Ballymun outside Dublin, where the urban horse culture is strong. John looks back at himself and his own history, and he is also focusing on transferring the proud legacy of horses to his first born son.

“What the hell is ‘an intelligent body?’ Can anybody tell me how to make my body more intelligent?” At the age of 24, the actor Lena Nyman asks herself this question after reading the reviews of the film I am Curious Yellow by Vilgot Sjöman. The film caused intense controversy in Sweden and internationally in the late 1960s and Lena was its leading actor. One of Sweden’s most prominent critics wrote “I’m requesting the intelligent body. Lena Nyman’s body lacks spirit, I would even call it dumb”. Lena Nyman was a woman before her time and had to pay a price for it. This film highlights her great artistry and genius, but also takes a closer look at her defiance and destructive behavior. Jane Magnusson has an extensive career as cultural journalist and filmmaker. In 2013 she was given the Axel Liffner-award. Jane has released several films and feature length documentaries with premieres at festivals from Cannes to Sundance. To mention a few; Her short Vox Lipoma (2018) competed at Sundance Film Festival and her film Bergman - A Year in a Life (2018) was selected by variety critics as one of the 12 best movies in Cannes (where it also had its World premiere) and received an EFA award for best documentary the same year.

For a year, Naomi and Edvin film themselves, the result is an intimate and raw portrait of their lives. They meet, fall in love and break up. Carl Olsson (born in 1984) graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2013. His graduation film Blessed Be This Place was nominated to the Danish Academy Award, Robert 2014, and the Camerimage 2013. Olsson looks with a sharp and loving eye on the little human, exploring oddities in our systems and cultures. His first feature documentary Patrimonium premiered at Göteborg Film Festival in 2019, and was awarded for “Artistic Excellence” at the Moscow International Film Festival.

Communist ideals have long lost their value in Yiwu, a city with 600 Christmas factories, in which Christmas as we know it is produced for the entire world. With rising factory wages, most workers can now afford newest iPhones, but they still live in crowded factory dormitories, all migrants in their own country. Stuck in between the Chinese traditions and the newly discovered Chinese dream, they want their own businesses, they want to be rich, to be independent, to be in love.
