Welcome to the world of Swedish films.

Last year was a great year for Swedish cinema, with films like Palme d’Or winner The Square, Sundance winner The Nile Hilton Incident, Ravens, Euphoria and IDFA awarded documentary The Deminer, just to mention a few. Short film The Burden of course, what a winner! 2018 shows that we are on the right track. Berlin competition title The Real Estate and Un Certain Regard selected Border, by Ali Abbasi, together with new films by Anna Odell (X & Y) Peter Grönlund (Goliath), Johannes Nyholm (Koko-di Koko-da) and Gabriela Pichler (Amateurs) among others, seems to prove the point. 2018 is also a great year for shorts with Berlin screening JUCK [THRUST], which is really

hyped on the festival cirquit right now, Out Fishing and Tweener. And it is 100 years since Ingmar Bergman was born! We are so happy that Cannes has chosen to invite Jane Magnusson’s documentary Bergman – A Year in a Life and a freshly restored The Seventh Seal for Cannes Classics! Take some time to read through this catalogue. We promise you that there are some really good Swedish films already completed and others in the making, ready to be screened, sold and loved. Please go to sfi.se for updated information on Swedish features, docs and shorts.

One of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

Ingmar Bergman (1918– 2007), Swedish writer, theatre director and filmmaker. His most renowned works include the films The Seventh Seal, Persona and Fanny and Alexander, the television series Scenes from a Marriage and books and screenplays such as The Magic Lantern and The Best Intentions. Undoubtedly one of the most famous Swedes ever, Ingmar Bergman’s centenary will be celebrated all over the world in 2018. In 1946 Bergman made made his cinema debut as screenwriter with Crisis. Followed by a forty-odd feature films over more than three decades, Bergman’s last major work was the television piece Sarabande, written and directed in 2003, at the age of eighty-five. 6

S W E D I S H F I LM

Bergman’s vast body of work follows a theme with variations. His universe is peopled by dysfunctional families as well as humiliated but vampiric artists feeding on the lives of others – and God, if He exists at all, is silent. But whether a film depicts a married couple divorcing, an artist’s frustration over a distracted audience, or a medieval knight desperately seeking the meaning of life (and death) – they all boil down to problems of communication between people. His cinematic style is austere and unobtrusive, the exception being his uncompromising close-ups of the human face, at once enticing and mysterious. Ingmar Bergman’s significance in the history of cinema cannot be overestimated.

• All Bergman’s films made for cinema are available in DCP format. • An exhibition about the filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman 100, is available for e.g. cinemas and libraries. • Ingmar Bergman A–Ö, a guidebook to the world of Ingmar Bergman with 146 anecdotal trivia and unknown facts, is available in English. • The exhibition A Never-Ending Whispering Conversation, about the creative process of Fanny and Alexander, is available for e.g. cinematheques and museums. • New prints of original Swedish posters of five of Bergman’s films are available for display in connection to film screenings. • Jubilee logo, portraits of Ingmar Bergman, his signature and a selection of film stills are available for free use at ingmarbergman.se. • For bookings and information, please contact Kajsa Hedström: kajsa.hedstrom@sfi.se

Stockholm, 1981. A man convinces his husband to go with him to a sauna to get new sexual experiences with other men. The man finds the sauna to be a safe place where he can explore his deepest desires. But even in paradise there are rules that you have to obey.

We find ourselves in an extravagant garden in Ouagadougou. The French Ambassador’s wife dreamt about becoming a famous opera singer. Instead, she is now using the singing as a ventilator to survive her seemingly privileged life surrounded by workers. This film raises questions about power structures, class, intersectionality, post colonialism and feminism in a poetic, subtle and seductive way.

The male genius disappears into another world of creativity and inspiration, he sits isolated from the world for days and through pain creates the perfect Art. But what happens to the artist when her body starts working for someone else, someone much bigger than the Art?

As We’re Told

The Bear

The Breath’s Deer

Dark Chamber

What’s it like working inside Sweden’s most hated agency, the Employment Agency? We’re meeting case workers, psychologists, bosses all portrayed by puppets inside a world of corrugated paper. This is a study of what happens when you just do what you’ve been told. Based on a book by author and Professor in Sociology, Roland Paulsen.

A successful woman at the top of her career is fed up with being a human being, buys herself a bear suit and emigrates to the wilderness. When civilization finally catches up, she has to choose which world to belong to.

One of the last traces I left behind was the weak snow, contemplates Stellan Skarsgård as as narrator. The Breath’s Deer is told through hundreds of watercolor paintings. It’s a film about what awaits humanity and moves seamlessly between genres of sci-fi and fine art. Where will it leave you?

The Camera Obscura (latin for Dark Chamber) is an optical device that led to the photographic camera. It consists of a box or a room with a hole on one side. This film is a reconstruction of an event that took place near the border of Austria and Hungary in the Summer of 2015.

Everyone thinks Alice goes too far but she doesn’t give in to group pressure. Johannes gets curious about Alice’s new side and together they discover something new about themselves.

Amal lives in a bomb shelter with her sisters in a wartime Syria. Food and water is scarce. One day when Amal is out playing, she finds a piece of gold. Suddenly other people claims the gold belongs to them.

Krister and Kristina’s marriage is crumbling. All the petty annoyances of their everyday life have eroded their relationship. They seek counseling, but it just might be too late to cure the infection that is tearing them apart. The Infection is a film in the spirit of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage, spiked with a dark sense humor.

JUCK [THRUST]

Night Child

Out Fishing

A couple wakes up in bed together; they start making out and he wants to take things further, but she’s not in the mood. A passing joke about paying for her to change her mind turns serious. The film holds up a mirror to the skewed power structures in our society and how they can affect our most intimate relationships and our ability to talk about them.

The word “juck” is Swedish for “hump” and the groundbreaking appearance by the dance group JUCK pushed the boundaries for how we are used to seeing the female body. JUCK questions the positions of object and subject. They provoke, inspire and break norms. The film poses the question: what is femininity?

14 year-old Ingrid hangs out in net forums behind the alias Night Child. When coming across her school´s photographer, they connect through their love for Iron Maiden. They secretly get involved in a relationship online. One night, Ingrid arranges a date with the photographer. Night Child deals with identity, sexuality, the existence of an age dependent twilight zone, and hunger for independence.

Betty is hungry and lonely and fishing in the river gives only scrap. In a moment of illumination Betty finds a creative solution. But the road to success is lined with traps.

Classics

THE FILMS

In 2013, the Swedish Film Institute initiated the work of digitizing the Swedish film heritage – everything from silent era films to films from the 2010s, including world famous classics to lesser known gems that are worth discovering or being rediscovered. We now present our “Classics” series consisting of digitized films that we would especially like to present to our international audience. In addition to providing new ways of accessing Swedish cinematic history, our hope is that the Classics series will generate an interest and curiosity around the Swedish film heritage. Twice a year, we will present our many films, digitized in the DCP format, with English subtitles. There will also be 54

previews, digital still images and posters, as well as text materials available along with the films. For the premier event, we have included the children’s classic Hugo and Josephine, the directorial debut by Gunnel Lindblom, Summer Paradise, which was produced by Ingmar Bergman and became an international hit, as well as the iconic silent film The Phantom Carriage that will be available both as a silent feature and with recorded music by Matti Bye Ensemble. We will also present Jan Troell’s The Flight of the Eagle, featuring Max von Sydow in the lead, and finally the extensive work by artist Marie-Louise Ekman. www.filminstitutet.se/digitized-films Contact: lova.hagerfors@filminstitutet.se
