The forests and the rugged landscape surrounding our two river valleys become a natural playground which we visit all winter. You are invited to come out and play as well. Curious about Treehotel? Join a guided tour where you get to hear the story of how Treehotel became a reality. You can also follow the work through pictures and stories. The tour includes a stroll up to the area for a viewing of the tree rooms and the saunas. Please bring suitable shoes for walking in the woods. www.treehotel.se

m a k e yo u r c h i l d h o o d d r e a m s come true, experience freedom high up in the treetops, in your very own nest. The experience is magical, seeing the forest from above, from within the canopy, becoming at one with the whispering wind, sharing the secrets of the forest. What began as an experiment in the Harads forests, offering accommodation in a homemade treehouse, resulted in this brilliant idea, accommodation in designer tree hotel rooms. At the Treehotel, well-renowned architects have been given full artistic freedom to create innovative and aesthetically perfect hideaways where you can relax and just be. Here, you will find a contrast to everything that defines life in the city: tranquillity, quiet, plenty of room, clean air and natural experiences. Just walking through the woods is an adventure in itself. Take the opportunity to experience the scent of the forest, the fresh winter wind and the feeling of being a small part of something greater. You mustn’t miss the cosy, homely atmosphere at Treehotel’s guesthouse right next door to the Treehotel. Imagine opening the door and walking in to the smell of home cooked food, made using local ingredients, pot-boiled coffee and freshly made bread. Ah, it’s great just to be here.

BIKE IN A SNOWY LANDSCAPE

RELAXING WARMTH A steamy bath provides much needed relaxation after a long day out in the fresh winter air. At Treehotel there are two saunas with beautiful views of the river and forest. The smaller tree sauna has room for 8 people, and adjecent to this, there is also the opportunity to enjoy the warm, steamy hot tub under the stars. If you are a bigger group, the large sauna is a perfect alternative. At Treehotel’s guesthouse you will find the cozy relaxation area in the old-fashioned environment with whirlpool, classic bath and sauna. One tip is to book an entire evening at the guesthouse with relaxation area in combination with pizza baking in the wood-fired oven.

Follow Taiga Adventures on a bike ride on trails, through the fabulous winter forest and across open snow covered meadows. Maybe you will see some of the forest’s wildlife? Fat Bike, or ”Fatty”, is like a mountain bike, with balloon tires, which make it easier to ride on soft ground. The advantage then, is that you can reach places that might otherwise be inaccessible.

TASTY FOOD IN VINTAGE SETTING Midst of the northern forest with views of the Lule River, you will find Treehotel’s restaurant. Here you are welcomed in a homely environment where the decor has been selected from the 30 to the 50-century Sweden. The atmosphere breathes warmth and coziness and you can feel like home but without everyday stress. In the restaurant they serve delicacies from Swedish Lapland and Swedish comfort food. The menu changes seasonally to keep the ingredients to top quality. Nearly all ingredients are local and as far as possible, organically grown. The staff will gladly help you if you would like to tailor your own menu. 5

BECOME AT ONE WITH THE FOREST

After a long day outdoors, few things are as relaxing as a warming fire. Here at Sörbyn Lodge.

t h e ro l l i n g f o r e s t l a n d s c a p e that surrounds Boden is a blessing. Here, in the proud, tall coniferous forest, peace and tranquillity reigns. Drift away in fantasy, let the tree trunks become pillars – and go exploring this snowy white cathedral, made for adventure. The best thing is that the forest is easily accessible, also with activities for the disabled. See how the light shifts between the trees and makes them glow as the sun finds its way all the way down to the snow cover that we’re walking on. Here, under the snow-covered trees, our sounds are muffled as we look for animal tracks – it’s really quite exciting to guess who walked here just before us. The most exciting thing of all is sitting in complete silence together with Mikael Suorra of Hide & see, in his bear hide, looking for a newly awakened teddy. You could also join a truly skilled guide for a small game hunt in the winter forest. In the evening, darkness lays its soft cloak over the forest and we get to experience the magical polar light, shining on the horizon. Yes, night is far from black. The Northern Lights dancing in the sky shift from green to violet and reflect upon the white snow. The glistening, starry sky and the full moon lights the world in silver. It’s difficult to get enough. So, hurry up and get here – we can’t wait to show you all this and more. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND   BODEN

Create new snowy tracks Experience the vast winter landscape. Along with CreActive Adventure you can move through the snow-heavy woodland with snowshoes or touring skis. With a little luck you can discover animal tracks for example of reindeer, weasel, fox, hare and the king of the forest, the moose. Seated comfortably in a sled behind a snowmobile you have a good starting point to look out for this majestic animal on a Moose safari. End the tour with a warm fire and a nice sandwich. With the sandwich it will taste good with a nice cup of hot coffee. Genuine Swedish boiled coffee is prepared over an open fire in a “sotpanna”, a kind of coffee pot, and of course the coffee is served in a “kåsa”, the traditional wooden mug. www.creactive-adventure.se

Geared with snowshoes you are bound to get around easily even when the snow lies deep and untouched.

EXPERIENCE OUR NATURE & WILDLIFE

TRACKED & UNTRACKED Since ancient times, the skis have been used as a smooth way to get around on the winter covered land. Touring skis fit perfectly on the untracked terrain, while the cross country skis do well on pisted ski-trails. In Boden, you will find well-prepared ski-trails at the local ski-stadium Pagla.

HOT BALLOON IN THE CRISP AIR

Photo: Marita Bergström

Mikael Suorra is a dedicated and knowledgeable naturalist guide. In the company Hide & see he offers his personal and genuine experiences where you get to peek inside the animal kingdom. During all year, the main activity is animal watching, sometimes from a comfortable warm hiding place, and also, you can try your luck in the search of wild animals – moose, reindeer, roe deer, eagle, hare, fox, capercaillie and black grouse out in the woodlands. Mikael furthermore offers ice fishing in the sparkling winter landscape with good storytelling about our nature and culture around a warming fire with homemade snacks. Hide & see starts from Svartlå in Lule River Valley. All activities are accessible to everyone also mobility disabled. www.hideandsee.se

Imagine flying over the frozen landscape or under the stars and the Northern lights. The owners and founders of Aurora Safari Camp and The Outpost are starting hot air balloon operations with an adept pilot that has been flying for over twenty-five years mostly over the African savannah. You can choose between an evening flight under the stars and maybe under the Northern lights with the balloon anchored in the ice, as well as a more advanced expedition when you launch and fly from one point to another. www.laplandballooning.com 9

End the lovely day of skiing with some nice food at the restaurant, where the kids’ favourite Gunnard have set the children’s favourite dishes. 11

Nature in the limelight and action have lots to explore when you visit Boden. Especially if you want most activities to focus on nature and the outdoors. Why not challenge yourself and your company to try as many different ways of getting around the snow-covered landscape as possible? Snowmobiling is a given thing for all of us who live here. You must try it too. The feeling of freedom, covering long distances of white, untouched ground, is delightful. You will love the wind on your cheeks and the closeness to nature as you get to know the powerful vehicle. Maybe going along Malmens Väg (The Ore Trail) or looking for pack ice in the archipelago. Dogsledding could be described as a work of art, a fascinating interplay between man and dog, with a language of its own. The sense of speed is second to none as the sled floats, silently between the t h o s e o f yo u w h o l i k e s p e e d

trees or out on the ice, close to the snow, dusting up from the paws and landing on your glowing cheeks. It’s an experience that you want never to end. Sörbyn Lodge offers an exciting expedition tour where you get the chance to drive your own dogsled and hopefully, you get the chance to enjoy a beautiful starry sky or the magical dancing Northern Lights. Or you could opt for an Laplandhusky adventure to live the dream of a wilderness adventure together with a dog team in the winter covered forest. Coffee on the excursion is a must. And then, as per tradition, boiled in a “sotpanna” over an open fire and enjoyed in a wooden cup. Perhaps flavoured with a bit of dried reindeer meat. Each action-packed day can best be rounded off in a steaming hot sauna. You’re ready to throw yourself headlong into adventure now, aren’t you? DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND   BODEN

GET TO KNOW OUR CANINE FRIENDS Experience the feeling of gliding in a snow-covered, untouched and quiet winter landscape. Regardless of whether you drive yourself or ride the sled, it is a special experience to travel quietly through the magical winter forest. The only sound is the dogs’ paws and breathing in tune with the sled’s runners against the snow. Halfway through the tour, you stop for a break with fire and outdoor coffee or hot food. Now you can take the opportunity to pet, hug and get to know the dogs in your team. These amazing individuals love to run and love to pull. The bond that arises between dog and driver is fantastic to discover and to be a part of. www.laplandhusky.com

Do as the locals and try to drive a snowmobile. The freedom and the closeness to nature is amazing. The old transport route for iron ore, Malmens Väg, offers many opportunities for the snowmobile trip and takes you all the way from the coast in the east to the mountain area in the west. If you join CreActive Adventure’s guided expedition to the Arctic Circle you drive through the woodlands of Råne River Valley and cross the latitude in the great wilderness. Another exciting tour by snowmobile takes you to the outer parts of the Luleå archipelago in the Bay of Bothnia. If the weather permits you try to reach the drifting ice, with its spectacular view reminiscent of Arctic. All outdoor activities require a warming fire, a tasty wilderness lunch and a cup of boiled Swedish coffee. www.creactive-adventure.se

The cultural soul OF BODEN

“We will soon be in Boden. First, the long bridge over the Luleå River at Trångfors. I feel the bridge echoing of an early winter’s day. I sense something of the river, thundering below and narrow ice edges that have not yet stretched across. The sensation of going back, somehow backwards in time, exists, fleetingly, in the exact sensation of entering something quite new.” Excerpt from “Vinterresa i Norrbotten” (A Winter Journey in Norrbotten) by Eyvind Johnson, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Literature, born in Boden.

We go backwards in time to find the images, the words that describe Boden today. It is the story of a fortress that was built on five high mountains that together shaped an important, guarding ring around the city. A fortress, which was without comparison in the Nordics; the Boden Fortress, also known as the “Lock of the North”. Boden became a place whose population was heavily increased by people from all over Sweden, working in the military or at the garrison hospital, however, up until 1997, Boden remained a very closed and secretive place to outsiders. This mixture of people became the breeding ground of the city’s cultural life as it is today; art, music, revue and theatre, film and not least the literary heritage of the proletarian and Nobel Prize winning author Eyvind Johnson.

In present time you can visit Havremagasinet, a regional art gallery featuring exhibitions not only of an international standard, but also local art from the Boden School. Close to the library, you will also find the art gallery of the local Arts Society. The local music scene spans everything from rock to classical choral arrangements and is active all year round in several venues. In the cosy darkness of the award winning Saga movie theatre, many people have been introduced to the world of film. Today, Boden is an open place, an warm meeting place for all the cultures of the world. The barbed wire has been torn down and the five high mountains are now popular vantage points. You are welcome here to explore the exciting cultural life in Boden – a dynamic meeting between then and now.

The impressive building Havremagasinet is one of Boden’s largest buildings, a house with a total area of 3,600 m2, spread over six floors. This listed building is today over 100 years and used to store horse feed, oat, to the horses at the Swedish Armed Forces. Nowadays, Havremagasinet houses one of the largest art halls in Sweden and works as a Regional Center for Contemporary Art showing exhibitions dealing with topical international themes. This winter “The Luleå Biennial” spreads across two floors with seven artists, in a group show covering themes of subjectivisation, collectivity, memory and renewal. Participating artists: Beatrice Gibson, Susanna Jablonski, Birgitta Linhart, Fathia Mohidin, Charlotte Posenenske, Tommy Tommie and Danae Valenza. You can enjoy the exhibition from November 21, 2020 until February 14, 2021. www.english.havremagasinet.se

Local ingredients MAKE DELICIOUS MEALS

At the Kallkällan Restaurant, there is a strong focus on high-quality ingredients

of our character through the regional culinary culture: the taste of Swedish Lapland. For thousands of years, our forefathers learned to handle the generous gifts of nature – the wild meat from elk, reindeer and hare with its characteristic taste of wilderness, the game fish from our clean waters and the sweet, sour berries, vegetables and herbs from our rich ground. To all this, we must of course add pot-boiled coffee, strong and black that warms and rejuvenates us, it is best made over an open fire in a soot-black pot. The Swedish fika culture is intimately connected to the coffee culture and we like dunking sweet cookies of all kinds, or even a cinnamon bun, g e t t o k n ow t h e v e ry h e a rt

in our coffee. A perfect energy boost as we pause between activities. That’s how our food works: it’s part of our culture, part of us and a natural part of your experience. Regional restaurants hand-pick selected ingredients that are prepared with skill and great care. At the Kallkällan Restaurant in Sörbyn, for example. If you choose to go fishing or hunting during your stay here, they are happy to prepare your catch for you, to complete your experience and make your day even better. Being able to trace every ingredient on your plate is an amazing privilege. It can hardly get more locally produced than this. Welcome to the table! An even better experience

WHEN YOU LIVE CLOSE TO NATURE

in Boden, we would like you to stay really comfortably. This is why we offer a range of options so that you can find your very own favourite. A fundamental principle is that accommodation goes hand in hand with nature. Yes, because we know just how magical it is to both fall asleep and wake up close to nature, in silence, with a beautiful view to rest your eyes upon. A bonus for those of you who choose to stay downtown is the ability to ski between the hotel and the well-prepared tracks at the Pagla Stadium. Imagine just gliding along, almost in the middle of town. You can of course do the same when staying surrounded by nature. Why not try walking on the snow, using snowshoes? It is a magical feeling, choosing your own paths across the snow cover, between the trees or out on the ice. Maybe on the lookout for the Northern Lights or the unfathomably starry sky. We are incredibly proud to offer glamping – glam camping – at the comfortable Aurora Safari Camp in the Råne River Valley, cosy rooms and cottages at Sörbyn Lodge, amazing timber lodges at Arctic Retreat, floating rooms at Arctic Bath or designer tree rooms at the Treehotel. They are all experiences in their own right – more than just accommodation. A given option to let you share our everyday lives and become at one with our spectacular, arctic environment. w h e n yo u v i s i t u s

There is a firewood heater in each Lavvu, and even if there are very low temperatures outside, your room is still warm on the inside. Go on a photo safari and develop your photography skills among snow heavy trees and in the evening, if you are lucky, you will be able to catch the northern lights with the camera. Try the tented sauna on a float that is frozen into the ice and at the end of an eventful day enjoy fine dining served in the lounge area by the fireplace. The recommendation is to not have too tight of a program to maximize your stay. The Aurora Safari Camp is a very relaxing but still intense experience just as it is. www.aurorasafaricamp.com

Welcome to Sweden’s arctic destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the Bay of Bothnia, the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
