Welcome to Skelleftea! Close your eyes and picture summer in Skellefteå. What colour do you see? Green? Blue? Yellow, maybe? Or is everything shimmering in a shade of pink? If you see green, you are probably picturing our lively city, where the urban greenery seamlessly becomes part of a undulating forest landscape. Here, nature is just around the corner, just as the city is in the middle of nature. If you see blue, your picture of Skellefteå is probably focused on one of the 1,500 lakes or the 300 kilometre coastline. The one lined with warm, bare cliffs and kilometres of sandy beaches. Blue could of course also be the blue summer sky, the mighty Skellefte River that cuts across the city or one of the three roaring wild salmon rivers, surging through the northern part of our destination. Yellow is the colour of the sun, for lazy days on the beach, sand between your toes, carefree reading in a hammock, and also of the rays of sunlight, shining for almost 24 hours a day, robbing day and night of their usual meaning. Is your sensation of Skellefteå more like a light, pink veil of mist? Then you are of course picturing pure summer love. Crowd pleasing favourites. Picturesque summer cafés and warm, late nights at inviting outdoor establishments. Pink can also be your own lovely little spot — that nameless forest glade at the top of a mountain, that secret ocean bay, or something completely different that you stumble upon and make your own forever. You are invited to share our everyday lives and add some colour to your summer.

The archipelago of the Gulf of Bothnia — DISCOVER PITE-RÖNNSKÄR THIS SUMMER o n t h e i s l a n d o f p i t e - rö n n s k ä r
there are about 30 small red cottages. In the past, fishermen’s families used to live in these cottages. They don’t any longer. Today, these are privately owned summer houses far out in the archipelago of the Gulf of Bothnia. And not without good reason, because in a way, Pite-Rönnskär captures the very essence of Swedish summer. In addition to the red cottages, you will also find a chapel dating back to 1771 and a coast pilot’s cottage. This cottage was built in 1849 and currently serves as a hostel. The hostel lies at one end of the cottage, with four rooms and eight beds. The other end hosts a picturesque summer café. The popularity of the café does of course have something to do with its delightful surroundings, but it’s also great in its own right, serving home-made Swedish fika (light treats) and light lunches inspired by the sea. In the middle of the island there is also a lighthouse. It is a so called Heidenstam lighthouse with a structure of pipes and angled braces surrounding 6
a central iron pillar. The Pite-Rönnskär lighthouse is the next tallest lighthouse in Sweden and actually by far the tallest of its kind. The lighthouse came to the island in the early 1900s, all the way from Skåne in southern Sweden ,from the island Sandhammaren to be precise. When it arrived, two metres were missing for the lighthouse to fully serve its purpose and today it towers 37 metres above the sea. Calling Pite-Rönnskär anything but an idyllic summer spot would be nothing short of an extreme understatement. If you would like to experience the Skellefteå archipelago, the tour boat operated by Kinnbäcks skärgårdsturism is a good place to start. It will take you to Pite-Rönnskär, amongst other places, in just 15 minutes. How long will you be staying? Well, that’s up to you but there’s always a risk that you will want to stay for a very long time.

HAMNSKÄR — AN IDYLLIC SUMMER SPOT The island of Hamnskär is found on the outer rim of the Skellefteå archipelago. There is no running water here. No electricity. There are a total of seven beds available for booking, found in the old coast pilot’s house and at the annex. Standing on the cliffs and looking east, you will see nothing but the dark blue water of the Gulf of Bothnia, meeting the sky far away on the horizon. You can book a place on the Kinnbäcks skärgårdsturism tour boat out to Hamnskär. www.byskehavsbad.se

There is also a kids’ menu, for all children. We are fully licensed, allowing you to enjoy a cold beer, a glass of wine or a schnapps with your herring. Crowd favourites a n i m p o rta n t pa rt of summer in Skellefteå is meeting spontaneously and having fun together with other people. Preferably whilst enjoying quality entertainment. This can happen in the stands of one of the most dedicated summer theatres in the country, in the crowd of the celebrated city festival or during a warm night of music on an island far out in the archipelago of the Gulf of Bothnia. Or when something completely different happens, such as a concert held on a raft on the Skellefte river, in the middle of town? Indeed, there are many who would say that these fantastic events are what define summers in Skellefteå. Who are we to argue with that? Consider the fact that we have the privilege of meeting and enjoying ourselves at Sweden’s largest free music festival, Trästockfestivalen. During the festival, 30,000 people gather at Nordanå for two days. People of all ages. From here and there. That’s just one example. Summer in Skellefteå really is nothing but one big festival. Hope to see you in the crowd! 14

Kalendarium
The flea markets in Folkparken in Skellefteå are a given summer activity for many upcyclers.
First and foremost second hand
— THE FLEA MARKET AND SECOND HAND SCENE IN SKELLEFTEÅ many things have happened in the second hand scene in Skellefteå. They were once something for a select few, but flea markets and second hand shops now provide a popular summer activity. — It used to be easier to find real bargains, says Tova, a true upcycling enthusiast. Now, those who run second hand shops know everything about the things that come in. They charge accordingly for them. However, since many of the second hand shops are based on charitable principles, Tova feels that the rising prices are not so bad. Flea markets on the other hand, there you can really find bargains. Especially during the summer. — First and foremost, there are the large, established flea markets. Like the one in Folkparken in Skellefteå. It’s fantastic and draws lots
in recent years
of market vendors and visitors, or the one in the village, Hej. There you can almost certainly find a couple of bargains. Personally, though, I am just as happy to get in my car and drive around looking for the small, hand-painted signs letting you know that there’s a flea market nearby. You know, in summer, flea markets show up where you least expect them. Tova explains her love for upcycling like this: — Partly, it’s good for the environment of course, but going to a flea market is also kind of like doing detective work. You’re always looking for something but you never know what you’re going to find, you will often find nothing — and sometimes you find something you had no idea that you wanted. The idea of upcycling is more about finding untapped possibilities than about finding complete, usable objects.

Nice shoes, good company and many breaks
TAKE YOUR TIME TO DISCOVER SKELLFTEÅ’S SHOPPING w h at m a k e s a g o od s hoppi ng e x pe r i e nc e ? There are probably as many answers to that question as there are people in the world. Sometimes, it is all about finding that particular gadget or item of clothing at just the right price. Other times, we like being surprised by finding something we didn’t know that we needed, or didn’t even think that we wanted. In any case, we can agree that good shopping is always an interesting mix of things. Is it right that you want to find large, established, dependable chains, as well as smaller, more personal boutiques that go their own way and aim to surprise you? In Skellefteå, we do actually have quite a few stores that you will not find anywhere else, not least if you’re looking for personal interior decoration. OK, enough about the selection of stores, how about places that encourage spontaneous meetings? With your fellow shoppers and with other people? Good, let’s add restaurants, cafés and outdoor establishments to the list of things that make for a
good shopping experience. Everything from a café latte on the go, helping you to last all day, to topping it off with a fine dining experience. As every real shopper knows, shopping can take quite a bit of energy. Sooner or later you will need a longer, more extensive break because short pauses only help up to a point. To make the rest as pleasant as you deserve it to be, it’s important that there are beds close by — and that they are comfortable. How else would you make it through to the next day — and the one after that? Do you agree that a mix of stores, a varied selection of places for spontaneous meetings and comfortable beds sound like something that will create a really nice summer shopping experience? Then, chances are good that you will like it in Skellefteå. To put the icing on the cake, Skellefteå offers a pleasant atmosphere and friendly, helpful people everywhere. Enjoy your shopping!

A brewery finds its way home Text and photo: Ted Logardt
Can you say that a brewery has found its way home? If you can, then that’s exactly what the malt brewery in Skellefteå has done. Nowadays, the Skellefteå Brewery is situated on the very same brewer’s slope where the Russian Vice Consul Seth Mikael Franzén established the Skellefteå Brewing Company, or the Skellefteå Steam Brewery as it was known for some time, in 1883. — We actually found remains of the old brewery when we began excavating to build the new one, explains Per Lundmark as he greets us in the Skellefteå Brewery’s new facilties, by the riverside in central Skellefteå. Seth Mikael Franzén was really a shipowner and trader in wooden goods, but then one day he realized that Skellefteå was lacking its own brewery. — The fact is that the old brewery was Skellefteå’s first real industry. At its peak, it employed more than 90 people and beer and soft drinks were produced there until 1976. In 1984, the building was demolished. Now, forty years later, beer is once again being brewed in central Skellefteå. — In a way, you could say that we’ve gone full circle, Per remarks with a laugh. MODERN HISTORY The modern history of the Skellefteå Brewery 22
began four years ago. They were then located at Kallholmen in Skelleftehamn, operating under the name Kallholmen’s Malt Brewery. — We brewed the first batch over the Midsummer weekend of 2011. In the old facilities they could produce a maximum of 120,000 litres, explains Per. — Today, we have the capacity to brew more than four times as much beer. In the last couple of years, the interest in microbreweries, in Sweden as well as internationally, has truly skyrocketed. — When Kallholmen’s Malt Brewery was founded, there were 43 active microbreweries in Sweden. Now there are more than 180. We have also noticed that beer now has a completely different status than it used to have. This can be seen, for instance, in the fact that beer is often a natural part of a fine dining experience nowadays. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ
THREE BRANDS Despite their name change, the Kallholmen brand is still one of the brewery’s flagship brands. — We work with three completely different product lines. Kallholmen, named after where it all began, Backens, named after where we are today and Seth Mikael, inspired by the Bavarian beer brewed by the Russian Vice Consul. The products are sold all over Sweden, but primarily in the northern parts of the country. — Backens (literally The Slope’s) in particular, is selling really well at many of the ski resorts in the mountain world”, Per remarks with a laugh. The beers that are part of the Kallholmen brand are described as ‘living’. This means that the beer continues to develop after being bottled. — This happens as a result of our brewing process. It is an unfiltered, unpasteurised beer with a distinctive character. CRAFT BEER Per takes us through the facility. From the malt grinder to the simmering copper pans. He mentions things like “unpitched wort, yeast room, mash pan and cooling-mantled aluminium tank” — Here, the beer is cooled for three to five weeks,
he smiles, lightly tapping one of the large tanks. At the Skellefteå Brewery, Czech crafting tradition is combined with Swedish Lapland perseverance and pride. — We brew in the way that it has always been done. That means pure ingredients. Malted barley, hops, yeast and water. Yes, the rest is actually pure craftsmanship. A COLD KALLHOLMEN At the brewery, there are four special tanks. They don’t look so special, but they function in a special way. They are in direct connection with the pumps at the night club next door, Brygg CC. — You can’t serve much fresher beer than this at your establishment, Per says with a laugh. The Skellefteå Brewery offers tours where visitors are guided through the brewing process. — It is also possible to take the experience even further by combining it with beer tasting at Brygg CC and a visit to the restaurant Bryggargatan Bar och Bistro. Both are right around the corner, the proud brewmaster concludes. More information about the Skellefteå Brewery can be found online at www.skellefteabryggeri.se 23

Yearning for a coffee or a Swedish fika? Don’t worry, on page 46 you will find lots of cafés and nice places to hang out.
Bon appétit — GO OUT AND STAY OUT
i s n ’ t i t t ru e that everything tastes better outside? Not least during summer. It can be a large cappuccino at a nice café, surrounded by people and friends, or a warm night at one of the inviting open-air establishments in the city. In Skellefteå, we are really proud of our local tastes. The ones that are rooted in a flourishing environment where fantastic ingredients are allowed to grow at their own pace and on their own terms. Sometimes we enjoy deep-fried lichens accompanying a lightly smoked reindeer tartar at one of Skellefteå’s top restaurants. Other times it’s as simple as a fistful of blueberries from hand to mouth, in the middle of the forest. Something that all our natural tastes have in common is the fact that they get their energy from a clean, flourishing environment and that they reinforce your experience of being right here, right now. It is also more of a rule than an exception that a really good tasting experience often turns into a great night out, preferably wrapped up on a vibrant dance floor. The motto of summer: Go out and stay out... late! 24

Market halls and artisan food open markets but indoors. They often carry an excellent assortment with a focus on high quality food. In Sweden, market halls exist mainly south of Gävle. Stockholm has a couple of huge ones, such as the Östermalmshallen and the Hötorgshallen. Up north, the market halls are fewer and farther between but in Skellefteå there are actually two. One in central Skellefteå and one in Burträsk. The one in the city, called Stadskällaren, is new. In addition to being a market hall it is also a food bar. — We have made sections where you can either buy exciting raw ingredients to take home with you, or enjoy a meal right here, says Mie, one of the market hall’s founders. We serve modern, rustic food with a focus on the ingredients. The menu varies constantly as it is based on ingredients currently available at the market hall. The Burträsk market hall has been in operation for a little while longer. Since 2014, to be precise. Here you will find fish, berries, cheese, meat and home-baked goods. Practically everything is locally produced. Except the spices, of course — and the tea. — At least 90 percent of our ingredients come from the region. It is important to us that both raw ingredients and processed goods are local”, says Karin who is one of 12 producers, part of
market halls are similar to

the economic association operating the Burträsk market hall. — The closer the better. That’s why the funnel chanterelles are picked in the Burträsk forests, the bark bread is baked in Kåsböle and the smoked ham is a product made from free-range pigs at Järvtjärn. A hand-written sign outside the Burträsk market hall reads: Bred and slaughtered in Åbyn. The distance between here and there is about five kilometres. If anything, that underlines small-scale production, a transparent production process and last but not least, the fact that animal welfare is at the heart of everything. — We know where our products come from and that they are high quality. We don’t compete with low prices, but the fact is that the mincemeat here for instance, is not a lot more expensive than the one you’ll find in the refrigerator at an ordinary supermarket. Västerbotten cheese is, naturally, part of the assortment. Anything else would be strange. The market hall is only a stone’s throw away from the Burträsk Dairy, where the legendary cheese is made. The Västerbotten cheese hardly requires any presentation. It is already world-famous and always served at the breakfast table of the Swedish Royal Family. The stories behind why the Västerbotten cheese can only be produced at the tiny dairy in Burträsk are many. Is it because of a nearby meteor impact, because of the never setting summer sun, or is it something else entirely? One thing is for sure though, Västerbotten cheese is heaven on a plate. www.vasterbottensost.com

Bark Bread
Awardwinning
At the small bakery in Kåsböle, less than 30 kilometres south of Skellefteå, Anders Hallberg is baking bark bread. You can tell from the smell and the black-and-yellow flags flying in the wind. The thing about bark bread is, obviously, the bark. It is healthy and contains lots of antioxidants, the further north it has grown, the higher the level of antioxidants. Anders has been baking with bark for almost seven years — and he has been successful enough to receive several awards and have his bread served at the Nobel banquet. You can buy bark bread at the Burträsk market hall and at the Bark Bread Bakery in Kåsböle. www.ostriket.nu
ARTISAN FOODS FOUND IN SKELLEFTEÅ’S MARKET HALLS
The award-winning Svedjan cheese is made with lots of love in the village of Svedjan, by Lake Storkågeträsket. There, the cows of the farm feed on green meadows in the light summer months. The cheese is a hard cheese with tiny holes and a ‘flourishing’ surface, meaning that the moulds in the storeroom are allowed to grow naturally. They create a natural casing that protects the cheese and helps flavour it during its maturation. Cheese really is a natural product and therefore the list of ingredients is very short: raw cow’s milk, microbial culture, rennet and sea salt. Every summer, there are also cultural events at Götes Hölada (Göte’s Hay Barn), next door to the dairy. www.svedjanost.se

A storytelling walk at Nordanå
— CULTURE IN HEART AND SOUL
Nordanå is one of Skellefteå’s most popular places to visit and not without good reason. Here you will find some of the loveliest little spots of summer. Come on a storytelling walk from east to west, directed by the Skellefteå Museum. We have gone back in time. It’s the day before Midsummer’s Eve. The aroma of flowering lilac marries with the smell of newly tarred timber houses. The air is as fresh and crisp as it only can be in Swedish Lapland. We have just finished a storytelling session at the outdoor museum at Nordanå. The picturesque Kågegården served as the stage. Now we are stan28
ding in silence with newly woven flower crowns on our heads, huddled together by the steps to the small country store. Anticipation is in the air. As we walk up the little hill and into Bonnstan, the old church town dating back to the 17th century, the voice of Greta, our guide, echoes into the silence. She tells a horrifying story about the fire that raged here in 1835. — The entire area was badly burned. Practically the whole church town burned down to the ground, for the second time. The first time the church town burned down was in 1672. ALWAYS LIGHT One member of the group has cupped their cold DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ
Lejonströmsbron used to be the centre of Skellefteå. The centre was later moved to its current location. In the olden days, that place was just a mire. Probably a great cloudberry mire, but a mire nonetheless. — The ground was drained and the water was directed into channels, where we find Kanalgatan (lit. Channel Street) today, the street that cuts right across the city. We move on, slowly but curiously. Lejonströmsbron, the oldest wooden bridge in Sweden still in use. It is long too — spanning more than 200 metres across the Skellefte River. — The bridge was finished in 1737 and you had to pay a toll of one Swedish öre to cross it on foot. This was also the site of one of the last battles on Swedish soil, in 1809. 6,000 Russians against 650 Swedish soldiers. Their task was to defend the grain warehouse at Landskyrkan, our guide says, pointing. It didn’t go very well.
hands around the hot cup of cocoa handed out and is lightly jogging on the spot to keep warm. It isn’t actually very cold, but crisp. Another straightens their garland and asks if we will get to see the bridge — Lejonströmsbron, before sunset. Greta smiles and answers: — Today, the sun will not set at all. These people are travellers. They come from somewhere else, somewhere where there is no midnight light. Accompanied by Greta’s vivid stories and their own fantasy, they try to capture a fleeting image of where they are. How things were then and how they are now. Differences and similarities. Standing here, in the arriving midnight light and just listening, someone says, is something unlike anything else. THE BRIDGE LEJONSTRÖMSBRON The stories fill the air along the northern banks of the Skellefte River — from Nordanåparken, through Bonnstan, on to Stiftsgården, Landskyrkan and Lejonströmsbron. Stiftsgården and
A PLEASANT WRAP- UP Our group seems content. Curious eyes, ears pricked up and rosy cheeks. People keep their floral crowns as memories. A lively murmur rises. Everything between heaven and earth is discussed. Now, as it was back then. However, back then, this wasn’t cultural heritage — just everyday life. Now, great hospitality and a hearty dinner awaits at Stiftsgården. By candlelight. Naturally, featuring a locally produced menu. Some members of the group take pictures to post for their friends online — because of course, one is proud to be here. Nordanå is one of the most popular places to visit in Skellefteå. Here, life is defined just as much by modern, semi-urban greenery as it is by the beating of the wings of history. In addition to offering curious, challenging and inspiring cultural events, the Skellefteå Museum is also home to an exciting boutique and a café. Here, you will also find the museum’s picturesque country store and the delightful restaurant Nordanågården. Remember to look for this summer’s storytelling walks! www.skellefteamuseum.se More tips on lovely places to visit in Skellefteå can be found on the next page. 29
PLACES TO VISIT Photo: Ted Logardt
Sometimes, a really good summer day is all about being spontaneous. About picking a spot — maybe a new one that you have never visited before, or an old favourite that you have longed to return to — and just going. Here are eight suggestions, covering some of Skellefteå’s most popular places to visit.
PROPER GELATO AT ALHEMS TRÄDGÅRD
Photo: Ted Logardt
Gelato is Italian for ice cream. Italian ice cream is in many ways something entirely different from the conventional ice cream you will find at your supermarket. Gelato is mainly made from milk rather than cream, which makes it lighter. — The secret to a perfect gelato is a good basic recipe”, says Hans-Jörgen. It’s all about finding a balance between ingredients. Small variations in the recipe can make a huge difference. In Skellefteå, you will find proper Italian gelato at Alhems Trädgård and in central Skellefteå too. www.alhemstradgard.se

In 1908 the new power station at Finnforsfallet began operating — as the first of the major plants built on the Skellefte River by the city of Skellefteå. To this day, the century-old power station remains intact with generators, instruments and turbines. One of the old tunnels has been opened, meaning that you can walk straight into the heart of the power plant. Guided tours at 12.15 and 14.15 every day. Next to the museum is the Café Finnfors and Teknikboa (lit. the Technology Shed) — a place for the whole family to explore electricity and energy. www.skekraft.se
EXHIBITION AND WILD GAME BOARD AT THE SVANSELE WILDERNESS CENTRE In addition to biking and driving ATVs you can also visit one of Sweden’s largest wilderness museums. It spans 1,800 square metres and has eleven rooms. Practically all animals that are found in the subarctic fauna are represented here — more than 600 species in total. Here, you can also try the wild game board, an incredibly popular dish. www.svansele.se

The living church towns of Skellefteå — TREASURE TROVES OF CULTURAL HISTORY In many ways, church towns are synonymous with the olden days, when people had to travel long distances because of mandatory church service attendance. The Swedish commoners were not allowed to miss the Christian creed as preached from pulpits across the sparsely populated parts of Swedish Lapland. — A church visit often entailed tens of kilometres of walking or horse driving, explains Frida, manager at Lövånger Kyrkstad AB, the company operating the Lövånger church town since 2014. Travelling was arduous and time consuming, it wasn’t easy to get here and back in one day. Because of this, church towns began popping up here and there in the north. COMMUNION AND COMMOTION — If you lived within 10 kilometres of the church, 32

at least one member of your household had to attend every Sunday service, Frida continues. If you lived twenty kilometres away, you had to attend every other Sunday, 30 kilometres, once every three Sundays and so on. This was due to regulations brought about as part of the Protestant Reformation, established for Västerbotten County in 1681. However, the major holidays, Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and Michaelmas were exempted from this rule. — Then, no excuse was good enough, Frida says with a smile. During these holidays, the entire parish gathered in the church towns and outside of the church services, people took the opportunity to visit markets and do business. Many men sneaked off to speakeasy bars and youngsters went courting amongst the cottages. — It is easy to imagine a place bustling with communion and commotion. A NEAT LITTLE TOWN There was once more than 70 church towns in Sweden. Today, 16 of them are preserved, including the Gammelstad church town in Luleå, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. In Skellefteå there are four, two of which are particularly well preserved and listed as Cultural Environments of National Interest. One is Bonnstan, located in central Skellefteå. Right next to the country church. The magnificent one, actually, the largest of its kind in Sweden, designed in the 18th century by architect Johan Rijf. Bonnstan is mentioned as early as 1732 in Carl Linnaeus work Iter Lapponicum (published in English as Lachesis Lapponica or A Tour In Lapland): “...the very neat little town of Skellefteå, consisting of two principal streets and several cross ones, with a church. The houses are about three hundred and fifty or four hundred, and their white chimneys give them a cheerful aspect. I was informed that every peasant in the parish had a house of his own in the town, for the use of his family during festivals”. THE LÖVÅNGER CHURCH TOWN The Lövånger church town has a lot in common with Bonnstan in Skellefteå. They are not too different in either form or function. Even the number of houses is almost the same, 117 in Lövånger and 116 in Bonnstan. — Here in Lövånger, however, the stables have been preserved, Frida tells us. All houses in the Lövånger church town are painted Falu red. Window shutters and doors are painted in yellow ochre whilst windowsills and

mullions shine brightly white. It is safe to say that whoever visits Lövånger will get a hefty dose of Swedish rural romanticism. LIVE WELL AND STAY COMFORTABLY Everything changes over time and so does the function of a church town. Today, distances have in many ways diminished, we no longer travel by horse and carriage. In Bonnstan, the chambers are popular amongst visitors, not least during the summer, but people rarely stay overnight. In Lövånger on the other hand, people are often accommodated in the church cottages. — We have a total of 100 beds, says Frida. All cottages have bathrooms with showers and room for two to five beds. There is good food at the restaurant in Storstugan and one can enjoy morning coffee on one’s own front porch. For obvious reasons, the Lövånger Church is found right next to the church town. — That makes this a perfect place for weddings. There’s even a special cottage for that very purpose. — The Bride’s Cottage, Frida says with a smile. It can be found on Uttersjögatan 147. — Yes, the cottages in Lövånger are numbered, which helps. It is not difficult to imagine that a wedding in the church town can be magical, nor is it difficult to imagine that finding one’s way back to the right cottage can be a bit difficult. All of the more than 100 cottages really do look very similar.

I really try to stop and think. What composition works best? How is the lighting? Are there distractions in the background? Emma also tells us how she feels about clear blue skies. — They’re overrated. Clouds, on the other hand, are good. They give life to the entire picture and character to the sky. An overcast day is a pretty day too. It gives a soft, lovely light that is excellent when taking portraits of animals. WATER AND BRIGHT NIGHTS In Skellefteå there are 1,500 lakes, five rivers, a 300 kilometre coastline and innumerable brooks and mires. — All this water is fantastic, Emma
says with a laugh. A sky, shot with the right exposure, reflecting on a blank water surface somewhere in the majestic forest landscape, need I say more? The bright nights were also fascinating for her. — On the second night, we were concealed in blinds, photographing the mating displays of black grouse. It was about three o’clock in the morning and just before the grouse began their display, I thought to myself that I should be tired, but I wasn’t. The light was fantastic, dreamlike somehow. The birds came so close and the water on the wet mire was splashing in all directions. — It was magical. WHIMSICAL WILDERNESS Emma has also managed to photograph elk, boreal owl, Ural owl, reindeer and osprey, amongst other things. — We caught the osprey on the first day, whilst paddling. Just before that, we also discovered a large bull elk on the shore. Unfortunately, the elk was too far away, but it ended up being a great bird picture and Emma was about to get a second chance at photographing elk. — We found a cow elk and her calf just outside the village, says Conny. Emma’s enthusiasm is unmistakable. It is explained to me how the elk picture came about. Then she happily tells me about the posing Ural owl. — He sat there so patiently and waited for the signal from his mate. That was lucky, because it meant that I could wait for the clouds to soften the sunlight. Then she pauses and says: — This is probably still my favourite. It's a boreal owl that has just woken up and is peeking out from inside a hollow tree trunk. — In a way, I can relate to that owl, laughs Emma. Three wild salmon rivers Text and photo: Ted Logardt
There are five rivers in Skellefteå, three of which are classified as wild salmon rivers. Such a concentration of salmon waters cannot be found anywhere else in Sweden and the crown jewel is Byske River, without a doubt, however, you need to earn your Byske salmon. The Byske River is a formidable fly fishing river. Just consider the fact that the river has an impressive drop of 38 metres in the last 11 kilometres before reaching the sea — and one fishing licence covers a river stretch totalling 100 kilometres – two banks! The Byske River is also very accessible. Roads run along the north side of the river and forest roads run along large parts of the south side. — But don’t think that you can just walk out there and catch a Byske salmon, smiles Andreas Andersson, dedicated salmon fisher, born and raised by the Byske river.
HOW TO FISH IN BYSKE • Find the rhythm. Early mornings are good for fishing; the pools have often had a few hours of rest then. • Don’t grow lazy. Adapt your equipment, change your line and dare to fish heavy. • Your favourite spot might sometimes be crowded, but don’t let other fishers scare you away. • Look for fish in calmer spots. Fish are more eager to bite with ‘roof’ over their heads.
EARLY SUMMER FISHING Salmon season begins in late May. — If there’s a strong flow of water, you need to get down to the fish, says Andreas. The rule of thumb is ‘the deeper the better’ and the whole point of sink-line fishing is to ‘hang’ the fly as close to the salmon as possible. — You can’t just go with the heaviest that you’ve got and hope for the best. You have to keep check on your gear. If you don’t, you’ll always hit the bottom or worse, hook the salmon wrong. The risk of this happening is particularly high if you sweep the fly quick and deep. Picture keeping the rod high and cast narrow angles. According to Andreas, you must actively adapt your fishing to the environment and current conditions. — If I don’t I have the energy to switch lines when switching fishing spots, I might as well go home and go to bed, he laughs. When the water has become slightly warmer and the flow is less intense, it might be time to sweep the fly closer to the surface in a more traditional manner. — A tip then is to fish the fly as quickly as possible. 38

Forgotten something?Skellefteå is home to one of the most dedicated fishing shops in Swedish Lapland (where Anders Cederberg works — when he’s not out fishing, that is). www.cykelochfiskecenter.se NOT FOR EVERYONE The river fishes very well throughout all of June. July on the other hand often means bathing weather with water temperatures a tad too high. It makes fishing a lot more difficult and things won’t usually pick up until after a real summer downpour. In August, the temperature normally goes down and schools of smaller salmon will then enter the river. In addition to casting heavy sinking lines, a Byske fisher must be prepared to wade deeply. Not always of course and not at every spot, but the Byske River is tough, particularly early in the season. This means that the Byske River is not for everyone. On the other hand, few fish warm a weary fly fisher’s heart like a silver shimmering Byske River salmon. A POSITIVE TREND The Byske River is currently experiencing a positive trend. In 2015, more than 5,000 salmon passed through the Fällfors fish waterway. The year before that, nearly 6,000. These are impressive numbers and they have generated a lot of interest in the Byske River in recent years. The Byske personality Anders Cederberg recalls how things used be: — Thirty years ago, we totalled 13 salmon fishers active in the Byske River. Back then we met at Landfors. That used to be our point of departure. Sometimes, one of us had seen a fish and that really caught the attention of everyone else in the group. That was the level of things. The river was long and the fish were few. That made its mark on the fishing. — You know, he continues, one thing remains the same. You still have to earn your Byske salmon. That’s just the way it is. A Byske fisher can never grow soft, you have to have a strong head and an iron will. Yes, sometimes you must be almost foolhardy. It’s often cramped near the water, with trees and shrubbery in the way. — Yeah, you know, Anders smiles and scratches his head, there are simpler salmon rivers than Byske, but none more rewarding when everything is right. Bygdsiljumsbacken is home to some of Sweden’s best trails for downhill biking.
Photo: Jonas LIndgren
Downhill at Bygdsiljum Downhill is all about getting down a mountain as quickly as possible, on a bike, with your heart in your mouth. You do it by throwing yourself down steep slopes, along winding trails. It’s not difficult to see that a lot of it is about adrenaline. It’s not risk-free either. A helmet is a must; a back protector is strongly recommended. — It’s not entirely unlike motocross, says Jonas Lindgren, downhill enthusiast and involved in the association that operates the facility at Bygdsiljum. Sure, we don’t reach speeds that high, but the silence compensates for that. You know, there’s something special about rushing through the forest in near silence. Jonas is one of the driving spirits behind the downhill racing at Bygdsiljumsbacken. In less than three years they have gone from being a ski resort waiting for winter to come, to being one of the best facilities in Sweden for downhill experiences. There are nine tracks here, or trails as they are called.
— We have a good breadth, Jonas continues, from beginner-friendly to real challenges. We have something for everyone. This summer, the collective Swedish downhill elite will gather at Bygdsiljum, August 21-22. — It will of course be great fun to organise the Swedish Championships and we see it as proof that all the hard work we have invested in our trails is appreciated. Jonas tells us that they will be making an entirely new trail for the Swedish Championships. — There will be one open class and one for licensed riders. In total, we are hoping for at least 80 participants. If you do not want to compete or do not have a bike or the equipment needed, but would still like to try the downhill trails at Bygdsiljumsbacken, you can hire everything you need, on location in Bygdsiljum. The facility is open every Sunday during the season.
In 2016, the Swedish Championships will be held at Bygdsiljum on August 20—21. Thewre is also an exhibition on the history of the bike at the Skellefteå Museum this summer.

t h e w e s t e r n w i n d is strong. It rips forcefully through the leaves, but down by the water surface, everything is remarkably quiet. — This area is known as ‘the little rivers (Småaälvarna)’, Niklas says in a soft voice. It almost doesn’t matter how strong the winds are, down here, the water is always glassy. The so called Småaälvarna are part of the Skellefte River. They flow calmly, rhythmically for the last kilometres, before the 410 kilometre mountain river reaches Innerviksfjärdarna, followed by the open sea in the Gulf of Bothnia.
Innerviksfjärdarna is one of Skellefteå’s 31 nature reserves, consisting of shallow, overgrowing inlets, which really means open stretches of water mixed with reeds and rich bulrushes. It might sound rather unspectacular but the birds in the area do not see it that way. — No less than 180 different species of birds have been spotted in the area, says Niklas and tells a story of how, when he last visited the inlet, he was met by nearly a hundred whooper swans who took off from the surface, there and then, all at once!
BYSKE ÄVENTYR With a vertical drop of 295 metres in total and the rivers’ steepest gradient, downstream from Fällfors, Byske Äventyr takes you and your friends on the adventure of a lifetime when you challenge the untamed rapids of the Byske River. The whitewater rafting season is from mid-May until the end of September. Regular tours, Saturdays at 10, throughout the season. Book in advance. www.byskeaventyr.se

THE WILDERNESS IN KALVTRÄSK Kalvträsk is defined by wilderness. An important reason for this is the Vitbergen Nature Reserve. There are 30 kilometres worth of hiking trails here, amongst other things. They have proper footbridges that will take you straight out onto the mires. If you would rather paddle along the winding creeks, that is of course just as good an option. There is also real wilderness accommodation in Kalvträsk. In several places, we see beaver canals on the banks, spots where the beavers enter and leave the water. Suddenly, a beaver head pops up out of the water. Welcome to Sweden’s northernmost destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east — a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west — vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
