Älvsbyn – the hidden pearl of Swedish Lapland to a really lovely winter's day with warm rays of sunshine and sparkling snow. Älvsbyn is a winter paradise for the entire family, with its white-clad landscape, snow-covered trees, starry, crisp evenings and nights that give you an opportunity to marvel at the magically billowing northern lights, a stark contrast to the summer's midnight sun. Our 17 nature reserves, numerous mountains and many rivers let you experience wilderness tours on horseback, snowmobile trails, winter fishing, scenic skiing trails and slopes. This is also home to one of the world's most enchanting places, a sight that has fascinated people for thousands of years. Namely Northern Europe's largest unregulated rapids: Storforsen, with flowing water that never freezes. Yes, nature has been generous to Älvsbyn, a place graced with many loving nicknames that all describe a northern countryside at its best. As early as 1930 author Gustav Zohn described Älvsbyn as 'the Pearl of Norrbotten' in his memoirs, travelling through the region. The metaphor is based on Älvsbyn from above, comparing it to a gem. The town resembles a sparkling white pearl embraced by high mountains and deep forests, lined with a glittering azure ribbon: the Pite River – one of Sweden's national rivers. The beautiful surroundings and hospitable inhabitants attract many Swedish and international film makers who record their winter scenes here. The number of tourists increases every year, all eager to explore the white pearl. n o t m u c h c o m pa r e s

THUNDERING FORCES OF NATURE, TAKEN STRAIGHT FROM A WINTER'S TALE

Get thrillingly close to the swirling waters along paths and ramps.

DID YOU KNOW Storforsen is visited by around 150,000 visitors every year, which makes it one of the most visited places in Sweden. The water flow in Storforsen is on average 250,000 litres per second, the equivalent of approximately 1,600 normal-sized bathtubs.

WALK OF FAME Right next to Storforsen Hotel is the well-known pub Raimo's Bar, built specifically for the film 'The Hunters'. It's available to rent for groups of up to 60 people. 4

it ' s almost impossible

to describe Storforsen in winter using words. In spite of temperatures plunging as low as minus 40 degrees the rapids never freeze. Their thunderous force and fantasy-like formations created by ice crystals in the wild currents will leave no one unaffected. Surrounded by old-growth forests and snow-covered trees you can follow the foaming water along kilometre-long paths and visit viewing platforms taking you tantalisingly near the swirling waters. These are the largest, unregulated rapids in Northern Europe: five kilometres long and with a total vertical drop of 82 metres. It's one of the most powerful experiences in the region. You can easily cook a warm lunch using one of the many campfire sites available in the area. There's no need to bring firewood, it's available in a storage shed on site. In the Storforsen nature reserve there's also a cosy boutique with products made by local artisans, and at the foot of the rapids there's a hotel and restaurant. A lot of effort has gone into making the area easily accessible to visitors, with picnic areas, information and excellent hiking trails. Large parts of the area are also accessible to visitors with mobility impairments; you can get all the way to the waters by wheelchair on wooden footbridges, for example. Experience winter at its very best municipalities in the interior of Swedish Lapland, but it features some of its most magnificent nature and important cultural areas. Excavations have uncovered tracks and unique findings showing that hunters and gatherers lived here as early as 7,000 years ago. So even if the surroundings look like untouched nature, even if the feeling is that of primeval forest, people have actually lived here since time immemorial. Back then there was no wilderness, only new areas to discover. This is your chance to experience that splendid nature and go exploring. Use the cross-country skiing tracks and snowmobile trails for your journey, or head out on your own. Try exciting winter activities such as ice climbing and snowmobile safaris, or treat yourself to a moment of relaxation where the final aim can be a beautiful view of the river scenery, or just a relaxing coffee break, enjoying your packed lunch in the winter sunshine. In and around Älvsbyn there are many thrilling fishing opportunities to be found. With more than ä lv s by n i s o n e o f t h e s m a l l e s t

6

50 fishing waters to choose between – lakes big and small, rivers, streams and rapids – there's winter fishing for all. In the warmth of the winter sun and when the ice is thick it's easy to go exploring waters and fishing opportunities by snowmobile, on ski or on foot. Bring friends or family, or enjoy some peaceful time to yourself. To head out ice fishing or angel fishing on a nice spring-winter's day is a form of relaxation that's hard to beat. Or why not try the excitement of so-called 'peek-fishing' for Arctic char and grayling when the first ice has set? Forget all about time and space as you lie on your stomach on a warm reindeer skin, looking down into the drilled hole and its dark abyss, suddenly spotting fish moving around your bait! Around 8,000 people live in Älvsbyn and the proximity to nature, the smell of the forest, the river's noise and nature's very own pantry creates a unique quality of life. So embrace freedom, stretch a little beyond your everyday life and create memories to last you a lifetime. Let our varied winter landscape become your next adventure! SUCCESSFUL WINTER FISHING

The key to finding fishing bliss is knowing what type of fish you'll find where – the easiest way is to get a fishing guide to help. Nature and fishing ADVENTURE THAT guide Kaj Kottelin is one of Älvsbyn's YOU CAN NOT MISS professionals who can help you experience fishing that you'll remember for the rest of your life. Born with a rod in his hand, Swedish ice-fishing champion and fly-fishing expert, he generously shares his knowledge of nature and water in Älvsbyn and Swedish Lapland.

BURBOT FISHING IN THE MOONLIGHT Go ice-fishing for burbot during a dark and still polar evening, beneath the starry sky, the sparkling northern lights and a full moon. The winter days up here are short and intense, but even darkness can provide an amazing show. And fortunately the burbot prefers the dark hours. SNOWMOBILE SAFARI – COMFORTABLE AND FUN

Food Culture

there ' s more to food

14

than just filling an empty stomach. It should also be a pleasurable experience, whether you're eating out at a restaurant or outside in the wild. In Älvsbyn we love food – we mix nature and culture, old traditions and new ways of thinking. Local produce from our rich nature is served in traditional dishes or mixed with exotic flavours from all around the world. All with one common denominator: authentic ingredients, tastefully presented and proudly served with heart. In Älvsbyn there's a lot to be proud of, things you can collect straight from the forest: mushrooms, Arctic brambles, elk, reindeer, wild salmon, whitefish and cloudberries to name but a few. How about carpaccio of elk, fish soup with wild salmon caught in Fällforsen, or Caesar wraps made with flatbread? This is also home to a Swedish celebrity who often shows up for breakfast, for a snack, on the move or in the picnic basket. In Swedish homes, Polarkakan is a true classic. The recipe comes from Älvsbyn and dates back to 1879 when the 'wandering baker' Johan Nilsson – who had

walked from Gothenburg to Swedish Lapland – chose to settle here. Inspired by the bread prevalent in Sámi culture, a soft, thin bread baked outside on hot stones, he created the recipe for today's Polarkaka. It was passed on to his children and the family has managed both recipe and heritage ever since. – It's actually based on Northern tenacity and persistence, because it's not always been smooth running. Times were tough already back in 1912, but we managed to save the bakery by trading a kicksled for one kilo of yeast. You have to be inventive! says Elisabeth Nilsson Singh, the great-great-granddaughter of Johan Nilsson, and laughs. – My mother also invented the reindeer wrap. First it was called a rye cone, then a Polar sandwich, because she thought it sounded exotic. But then it became simply 'reindeer wrap' and it's so tasty! Only imagination sets the limits for toppings and fillings, but even so: cheese and butter or reindeer meat are my favourites. It tastes so good outdoors. Simple and tasty! Helly Hansen and world champions... 8,000 inhabitants, 5,000 of them in the main town. There are many villages in the municipality and the largest three are Vidsel, Vistträsk and Korsträsk. During the winter months a number of activities are organised in these villages. Fishing enthusiasts can bring their ice-fishing equipment and participate in one of the ice-fishing competitions that take place, such as Djupträsknappet and Muskusnappet. Did you know that there is a special Vistträsk suit, named after the village?

The suit is actually a classic Helly Hansen jacket a garment that's been particularly popular in the village for a long time, hence the name. To keep the tradition alive, all newborns in the village get their own Vistträsk suit, custom made with a label that says 'Made in Vistträsk'. There are a number of pearls among our villages, such as the village Vitberget with Norrbotten's highest mountain, or the village Tvärån with ties to two Swedish and international snowcross champions.

FOREST SKIING We go on traditional, tried and tested forest skis through the snow. Winter is a very special time of year, when animal tracks are easily seen. We glide through the forest, underneath trees heavy with snow. The shape of nature is completely different during the cold winter months. We stop for a proper lumberjack lunch by a campfire.

Welcome to Sweden’s northernmost destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com For more information contact Älvsbyns tourist information +46 929 10860, Storgatan 27, Älvsbyn, turistinfo@alvsbyn.se www.alvsbyn.se/visit Information places: OKQ8, Gulf, Polar Hotel, Hotell Storforsen, Train station, Fluxen, Tempo Vidsel
