Welcome to Skelleftea! Picture the low winter sun, shining with unbridled warmth through a spruce forest covered in snow. That warmth sure feels different. It’s not warmer than other sunlight. Hardly stronger or more intense. Maybe it just feels different because the sun has been away for so long — and is now warming the depths of our souls? When Skellefteå is softly embedded in a thick cover of white snow, our subarctic everyday life is characterised by a seamless transition between night and day. It makes little difference whether we put on our forest skis, turn on our head torches and go for full moon walks in a silver shimmering old growth forest, or walk out on a snow covered pine heath with the warming winter sun on your back. We have snowshoes on our feet and nature under our skin. Sometimes, we just enjoy the tranquillity of the sled, swathed in warm clothing behind eager huskies. Travelling without a sound into a fantasy landscape of newly fallen snow and glistening ice crystals, or in the direction of the city centre and the pulse of civilisation. Just as the light — or darkness if you will — is such a normal part of our everyday life — life in Skellefteå is also shaped by seamless transitions between city life and wilderness. Between intensity and complete relaxation. Between a victorious moment on the western stalls of the stadium — where you can feel the local ice hockey culture in your entire body — and laid back hanging out, drinking pretty cocktails in an uncomplicated lounge environment. This is Skellefteå. In winter. For real. You are invited to share our everyday lives — to experience our warm light and soft darkness. In this brochure, you will find some information about what Skellefteå has to offer this winter. You can read even more at www.visitskelleftea.se

The little lighthouse is all that reminds us that we’re not on top of a massive mountain plateau above the tree line.
FROZEN SEA The ice age is always present along the coast of Swedish Lapland. From the constant land elevation to the barren, windswept frozen sea. The coast up north is pretty remarkable. It actually grows, year by year. It’s to do with the inland ice. Post-glacial land elevation is the academic name for it and it means that the land strives to return to its original level — the so-called mechanical rest position — after being subjected to extreme pressure by the inland ice during thousands of years. — At its height, the landscape was covered by an ice sheet that was four kilometres thick, explains Peter Lundström from Swenature. The Ice Age ended around 10,000 years ago and there’s still a lot left to remind us about it, the land elevation not the least. The uplift is greatest in West Bothnia and the land in Furuögrund, near Byske, rises the most. Almost 10 millimetres per year, says Peter as the forest opens up and he leads us straight out onto the sea ice. 6

AN EMPTY CORNER We walk on snowshoes fitted with ice spikes, which is pretty handy. Even if the snow lay heavy on the trees on the way out the sea ice is windswept, and this makes it more slippery than soft. — Some might call this harsh, Peter continues, but I like it. When you step out of the forest and onto the sea it’s like entering another world. The frozen sea is undoubtedly grand: barren, windswept. But also absolutely amazing. We set our sights at a lone island. The little lighthouse is all that reminds us that we’re not on top of a massive mountain plateau above the tree line, or on a glacier far away from the rest of the world. A sea eagle suddenly takes off, as if to point out that we’re nowhere but here — in an empty corner of the Bothnian Bay archipelago. A MOUNTAIN PLATEAU ABOVE THE TREE LINE We come across a wall of ice that rises up high above our heads. The architecture of nature. — Just wait till we get to the other side, says Peter and smiles. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S K EL L EFTEÅ
The wind increases and the snow starts falling more heavily. — The likelihood of seeing the northern lights tonight is minimal, he says, but as you can imagen this is a good spot for northern lights watching. Once we’ve rounded the north-eastern corner of the island the landscape changes yet again. Now it’s no longer a mountain plateau above the tree line; what greets us is more like a barren moon landscape. — Pack ice. This is what happens when wind forces the ice floes, compressing massive amounts of ice. PACK ICE Apart from providing us with a striking view, the pack ice also gives shelter. We climb down behind a small iceberg and find an ice floe sticking straight out — at the perfect hight to make a seat! — Here we can rest, Peter says. Before he gets started on the cooking he drills three holes in the ice and hands us ice-fishing rods. — You’ll provide the food, he laughs and says
that there’s usually a fair amount of whitefish around. I have brought some palt (a kind of potato dumpling), he says. If you’re unlucky with the fish. While the palt is cooking over the fire Peter tells us that he found moose tracks covering a large area nearby the day before. Even leading far past the pack ice. — It looked like something had been herding the elks. I found traces of a big canine as well. It’s unusual to get wolf in this part of the country, but they’re seen here every now and then. In winter the northern days are short. Before we’ve finished eating and packed everything away it’s dark. We borrow head torches. Wrapped into the soft darkness of winter, a light snowfall and experiences that keen us warm deep inside our duvet jackets we head back, towards the city lights.

Exploratoriet
— INTERACTIVE EXHIBITIONS AND AN EXPERIMENTAL ENVIRONMENT In Skellefteå you will find Sweden’s newest Science Center. Here, science and technology challenge you to think outside the box and play your way to insights about the nature of our fantastic world. Welcome to Exploratoriet — the Exploratorium!
side the box, making you an active participant in your own experience. It can be everything from understanding the inner workings of a sewer system, to why a light bulb glows or what it feels like to be in the eye of a hurricane. Put simply, we want to create lots of aha moments, lots of insight into the way our world works.
Physically, the Exploratorium is located at Nordanå in Skellefteå. Next door is the Skellefteå Museum and nearby you will find an art gallery and a theatre hosting many cultural events. It could be said that, the story of the Exploratorium began all the way back in 1969. — That’s when Dr. Frank Oppenheimer opened the world’s first Science Center in San Francisco, explains David, Operations Manager at the Exploratorium in Skellefteå. Oppenheimer called the newly opened museum The Exploratorium and it was centered around the fantastic world of science. — And that’s the way it still is, David says with a smile. Here and now, in Skellefteå.
IMPORTANT PROCESSES The Exploratorium gets much of its profile from the heart and soul of Skellefteå. — We have permanent exhibitions on the themes of forest, water and minerals. Natural resources that have, for a long time been and to some extent still are important to Skellefteå. The modern city is also an important part of our shared identity and that too has its place in the Exploratorium. — Here, the process is more interesting than the result. Take Thomas Edison for instance. One of the greatest inventors in the history of mankind. It is said that he conducted more than 2,000 tests in his pursuit of getting that light bulb to glow. Do you think he considered those 2,000 failed tests a waste of time? Quite the contrary, he felt that the process had shown him 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb glow. There are plenty of examples of failures turned into success. The key thing is to stay curious. How do we do that? We take risks and dare to fail, and most of all we have fun doing it. — This is precisely what we do here, at the Exploratorium in Skellefteå.
PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE Dr. Oppenheimer wished to boost the will to discover amongst coming generations of scientists. With his Science Center concept he did much to inspire curiosity in the fields of science and technology. Today, 47 years later, there are more than 3,000 Science Centers throughout the world, 19 of them in Sweden. Features that they all share include interactive exhibitions and the experimental environment. Skellefteå’s choice to name their Science Center ‘The Exploratorium’ is partly a tribute to Dr. Frank Oppenheimer but it also has a direct meaning. — You come here to explore and experiment, explains David. We want to inspire thinking out8
Even though anyone can have great fun at the Exploratorium, it is primarily geared towards children between the ages of five and fifteen. In the building there is also a café. Winter swim
— A DECLARATION OF LOVE FOR THE COLD AND DARK
In February Skellefteå will host the Scandinavian Winter Bathing Championship for the sixth consecutive year. The event has become a natural part of winter in Skellefteå and today it is an appreciated festival for the entire city — all founded on a declaration of love for the cold and dark. On average it takes a professional swimmer about 20 seconds to swim the 25 metre lane surrounded by ice in central Skellefteå. We know this because professional winter swimming, in temperatures just above zero, has been organised here since 2012. Participants compete in breaststroke and freestyle swimming as well as a more relaxed “hat and cap race”. — A naked body loses 50 percent of its heat through the head. That’s why it’s important to keep your hat on when winter bathing, says Jarkko Enqvist, winter bathing enthusiast and manager for marketing and events with the association Mörkrets och Kylans Glada Vänner 16
(lit. The Happy Friends of the Cold and Dark) which is behind the event. STEADY GROWTH — The event has experienced a steady growth in the number of participants since we started, reports Jarkko, recalling an episode from the first year of the championship. — With only two weeks to go, we had just one participant signed up. - We actually thought about cancelling the whole thing, but then, a man from Värmland called. He had just booked his trip and wanted to double-check how many participants there were going to be. The response was ‘You are not alone’ and that became the push that the organisers needed. — We made an effort and when the day finally came we had 32 registered participants, 56 individual races and participants from five different countries. On that day the temperature was more than 36 degrees Celsius below zero and the event was in DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ
Winter Swimming in Skellefteå opens on February 10. The Scandinavian Championships that are also part of the World Cup, are held the next day, February 11. The Frost Day (Frostens dag) is held February 14, on the sea ice at Kågehamn.

many ways a success. Today, the Winter Swim in Skellefteå is part of the Scandinavian Championship as well as being one of six competitions in the world International Winter Swimming Association, IWSA, World Cup. CLEAR HEALTH BENEFITS Winter bathing also has proven health benefits. Studies have shown that winter bathers have lower blood pressure, are more resistant to cold and cope better with stress — not to mention the endorphins that go absolutely wild after a winter dip. — Our drive has always been to create a winter event that would spur interest in Skellefteå whilst also paying tribute to the cold and dark of the North, explains Jarkko. Winter has so much to offer us, not least at its darkest and coldest. In 2009 the association Mörkrets och Kylans Glada Vänner was established. — At first we thought about calling ourselves Mörkrets Vänner (lit. The Friends of Darkness) but that was seen as slightly too melancholy.
Then we tried The Friends of the Cold and Dark but that also had quite a heavy-hearted feel to it. So, we simply added ‘happy’, becoming The Happy Friends of the Cold and Dark, Jarkko says with a smile. THE MELANCHOLIAD Finding joy in the cold and dark is what it’s all about. Because there is something extraordinary about the winters far up north, when temperatures fall to 30 degrees Celsius below zero and there are just a few hours of sunlight each day — if the weather is good. — We call this period the Melancholiad. It begins as we light the first tea light and ends when the last one has burnt down. We think that we need the cold and the dark, not least because it allows us to lay back and relax. The Melancholiad is about recreation and about reaction. About reflecting on what has been and gathering strength in preparation for the light and intense summer half of the year. The cold and the dark play an important part in doing just that. 17

STADSKÄLLAREN — A CREATIVE MEETING PLACE FOR FLAVOURS Stadskällaren — The City Cellar — really consists of three sections. A food bar, a lunch market and a market hall — everything under one roof. At the heart of it all are pure flavours and high quality ingredients. Half a flight downstairs, a stone’s throw from the city park and river bank, you will find Stadskällaren in Skellefteå. The restaurant has seating for just over 70 guests and the space has an airy, atmospheric feeling. More than anything, says Markus Richtman who is one of the owners, Stadskällaren is a meeting place for people who love flavoursome food. — Unpretentious yet high-class, he smiles and continues. — We see ourselves not just as a restaurant. We want to be an inspiring place. Inspiring meetings, between people and flavours. Everything revolves around raw ingredients. Really good ingredients. This means that it doesn’t matter if you come to us for fine dining, drop in for a spontaneous lunch or take something home from our market hall. IT ALL GOES TOGETHER As we’ve said, Stadskällaren consists of three sections, a food bar, a lunch market and a market hall. Everything under one roof. — We want it all to go together. That is, the food that we have in our market hall and that which our chefs use to compose their menus. The menu has sixteen courses and changes several times a month. Everything according to season, access to raw ingredients and the creative whims of the chefs. — We believe that people are key in creating interesting taste experiences. That’s why we are very happy to have a team where everyone inspires and challenges one another. Our goal is that our kitchen should be a place with a lot of creative freedom.
Text & photo: Ted Logardt
AS LOCAL AS POSSIBLE High quality raw ingredients are the very foundation of Stadskällaren. Preferably as local as possible. — When it comes to meat, we source everything locally. The fact that transport can be kept to an absolute minimum is hugely important to the final quality of the meat and if we buy a pig from Järvtjärn, it’s that pig which dictates our menu composition and also ends up on the meat counter of the market hall. Then, the meat simply has to be excellent. They also process all their meat themselves. — It gives us the opportunity to make our own mark on our ingredients. MARKET HALL The assortment in the market hall ranges from oriental spice mixes to locally produced fruit juices. It is important that the products feel unique and that each product contributes something to the bigger picture. — We choose carefully. Nothing beats finding really great, small-scale producers in Skellefteå. Svedjan Ost for instance. Their products are of an extremely high quality. In my opinion, Per actually makes the best cheese of its genre in all of Europe. The price is a bit higher of course, but I think people really appreciate the importance of genuine craftsmanship in the taste experience. Stadskällaren opened in late May 2016 and Markus says it has been well received. — Soon, we hope to bring our guests closer still to the kitchen, becoming an even more obvious choice as a meeting place for food enthusiasts. Stadskällaren offers dinner at the food bar, Monday to Saturday, from 5 pm to 11 pm, the lunch market is open from 11 am to 2 pm and the market hall is open every day from 10 am to 11 pm, except on Saturdays when it opens at 11 am and on Sundays when it’s closed. www.stadskallaren.nu

Night out in the city
is all about having a really good plan – from beginning to end. – If it’s me and the girls, we always start by eating something nice, says Josefin. On game days, we naturally go to one of the sports bars in the city, on other days we go for a really good restaurant. In the last two years, Skellefteå’s nightlife has undergone something of a transformation. New restaurants, pubs and bars make Skellefteå feel trendier than ever before. – There are many great places to meet in the city even after the stores have closed and my feeling is that people today socialise in a slightly different way than they used to. Take, for instance, all the different, flavoursome kinds of beer. After we’ve eaten, we often go to one of the pubs with a wide assortment of beer, to sample. Other times we focus on classic pub activities like pool or darts. Josefin says that there’s now better mingling and a really great lounge atmosphere even earlier in the evenings. When the evening has turned into night, there are only two things left to do: good music and dancing all night. – It feels like Skellefteå’s nightlife has something for everyone. a r e a l ly g r e at n i g h t o u t

FROM A FARM SHOP Udda traces its roots to the farm shop founded by Ida and Elin almost four years ago. — It was in the autumn of 2012, says Ida. — We had long been talking about doing something together, Elin continues. Something creative. Nothing serious. Just something small on the side to make us happy. That farm shop quickly became popular and in 2013 Udda moved to a small, but still proper, 24
commercial premises in central Skellefteå. — We never really thought we’d open a boutique, Elin says with a smile, but you know, things don’t always turn out the way you had planned. INSPIRATION Today Butik Udda is located at a larger premises and more central location in Skellefteå, where it has been since spring 2015. That’s when Lina joined the operation and two became three — but if we really want to go back to the beginnings the idea started growing after a trip to a larger city. — It was a couple of flower pots in a shop window, Elin remembers. — Why is there nothing like this here in Skellefteå, we thought to ourselves, and that’s the way it all started. In the beginning, Udda mostly had interior decoration, but they quickly added clothing and other artefacts. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S K EL L EFTEÅ

THE REAL THING Marketing in the traditional sense doesn’t really interest the three proprietors. — We’re all driven by a will to find things that we like. It’s a bit like detective work and takes a lot of trendspotting; when we make selections, we just go with our gut feeling and we’re not afraid to be spontaneous. All three of them are childishly excited about product deliveries. — We simply think that running a shop is about as much fun as it gets, Elin says with a laugh. — Not least when we get new items, says Ida. Then, we unpack and try them. Touch and feel and post to Instagram. Instagram has become a successful marketing channel for Butik Udda. — That’s where we communicate with many of our customers. It’s a direct kind of contact and I think that’s appreciated, both by them and by us, says Lina. QUALITY The products that you find at Udda must have an air of quality and their selection covers brands such as HAY, Fine little day, L:a bruket, Selected femme and Skultuna. — We like sustainable design and we like it
when things are organic, says Elin. — I think the people who shop here appreciate the fact that we have a very particular style, Lina continues. They know what they will get here – even if we still want to keep evolving. Elin also emphasises that things do not have to be perfect. — Rough around the edges is good, like us. The boutique is a reflection of what we’re like. Our customers know this. I think they are the same kind of people. — Speaking of customers, Lina says with a big grin, we really have the best customers in the world. Honestly. She recounts a conversation between two women that she happened to overhear the other week. ‘Yes, here you can just walk around and feel great.’ said one. ‘Yes, coooosy’, the other one replied. — That makes us happy, that’s exactly the kind of emotion that we aim to create. They all nod in agreement. — More coffee, by the way?, Lina enquires, as the first customer of the day walks into Butik Udda.

Different winter experiences sometimes,
it is just so nice to venture outside the box. To do something you have never done before. Just for fun. Build an igloo. Stay outdoors overnight in the ice cold winter. Leave phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches and all such things behind and enjoy a digital detox. Use the massive ice sheet and crisp winds of the Gulf of Bothnia for an Arctic yoga session or climb straight down into a hole in the ice and find yourself.

In the wild forest landscape of Svansele, seated on a snowmobile with a quiet fourstroke engine, the elk spotter reads nature’s signs in search of the King of the Forest — the mighty elk (Alces alces). In the landscape, he can see the traces left behind by the elk, how its foraging for food was interrupted by heavy snowfall and where the huge elk has slept the night before. The tracking continues deep into the Swedish Lapland forest and does not stop until you can see the elk with your own eyes. www.svansele.se

In theory it might not sound like the best of ideas. A winter bath. Getting undressed as the thermometer registers -20 degrees Celsius sort of goes against all human wit and sense. However, once you have discovered that swimming amongst snow slurry and ice crystals is not that bad after all, you will experience an immense rush and sense of wellbeing and chances are you will have become a winter bather for life. www.darkandcold.com

Close-ups with the grand nature as a backdrop.
Extreme golden eagle photography Text: Ted Logardt Photo: Conny Lundström
Imagine leaving all the stress and all the noise behind you for a couple of days, breathe the fresh winter air of the forest and meet its four-legged or winged residents eye to eye as you take on the role of nature photographer. — Most people who come here are looking for the winter landscape, says Conny, carefully blowing on the hot coffee in his cup. Conny is a wilderness photographer. Stationed in Kalvträsk and specialised in photographing the golden eagle. He has made a name for himself with his often extreme close-ups of the mighty birds. — As long as you are careful, there is almost no limit to how close you can get, he says and tells the story of how he has photographed eagles, with a handheld camera, as close as barely half a metre — then using a wide-angle lens. 28
— We normally take pictures at a distance of about six, seven metres — using a tele lens — if we’re doing portrait photography, but it is just as important to offer opportunities to photograph the animals in a genuine winter environment. PROPER HIDES Nature photography is not simple. It requires a lot of preparation and knowledge about animals and the environment. — Today, I have three eagle hides. Conny tells us about his largest one, at the foot of the Vitbergen nature reserve. — A log building with a toilet, a wooden stove and room for four photographers. It never really gets cold, no matter how harsh the winter cold may be. He picks up his phone and shows a portrait of a golden eagle with white frost covering its feathers. DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S K EL L EFTEÅ
— A picture like that can only be taken at 35 degrees below zero. Conny tells us that one of his hides is completely new. — Surrounded by 200 year old forest, on a sandy ridge between a lake and a marsh. It is roadless country. You need a boat or a snowmobile to get out there. NATURAL ENCOUNTERS Golden eagles are very territorial and will not gladly let other eagles on their turf. — However, when the winter gets cold and food is more difficult to find, they often go on longer searches. Many years ago, Conny photographed a young golden eagle from one of his hides. It was ringed and he managed to get a picture of the ring, telling him that the bird was native to Finland. — It was roughed up by local territorial eagles and as it hopped over the marsh, badly battered, I thought to myself that I had probably seen it for the last time. Then, one morning, eight years later, I found an eagle sitting on the very same branch where the young golden eagle once sat. You know, golden eagles have their favourite branches. This time there were two eagles in the tree. It can’t be, I thought, but it turned out to be the same bird who had now met a mate and returned. — Wildlife encounters are difficult to arrange, I say to myself, smiling.
INTERNATIONAL NATURAL EXPERIENCES The photographers who visit Conny are usually driven amateur photographers, often just as skilled, if not more skilled than many professional photographers. — Semi-professionals, I guess you could say. They are incredibly dedicated and they know to appreciate the moments when everything falls into place. In a way, Kalvträsk, just like Spitsbergen, the Great Barrier Reef and Yellowstone, has become famous amongst photographers all over the world for its unique natural experiences. It is the combination of extreme close-ups and fantastic natural environments, coupled with Conny’s immense skills, that make travelling photographers come to the small village. — Almost everyone is struck by just how silent and how dark the forests up here can become. That darkness is not bad. In later years, both the Northern Lights and night photography have become increasingly sought-after experiences. — Thanks to the fact that we have very little surrounding light where we operate, you will get fantastic opportunities to take pictures of the Northern Lights, the starry skies, all of the Milky Way actually. Conny puts his empty coffee cup down on the table. Now he has been in civilisation for almost too long. Read more about Conny Lundström and his photo experiences at www.connylundstrom.com

Moments in Österjörn Edoardo Miola’s idea behind the Lantliv Lodge (Country Life Lodge) in Österjörn is that you should stay for a long time. At least long enough to wind down. Appreciate the moment. And, best of all, find inspiration. To create. Or to just be. There and then. That is his philosophy. Edoardo is Italian but nowadays he can call himself a resident of Österjörn too. He is the proprietor of the Lantliv Lodge in Österjörn and his philosophy is a bit different. — The idea is that you shouldn’t do anything at all here, he says, in all seriousness. That doesn’t mean, however, that there’s nothing to do there. In reality, there are lots of things to do, both nearby and in the region. — But that doesn’t mean you have to try them all, he says with a smile. HERE AND NOW Edoardo wants to create an environment where people can breathe, relax their shoulders and appreciate the moment. — Sometimes it feels like we’re rushing through

life. We tick boxes and plough on, hunting for the next big experience. He is rather averse to that. The stress. The hunt. – You should stay for a week at Lantliv Lodge. At least. Not to give you time to do everything there is to do. No, quite the contrary. I want the people who come here to feel those creative thoughts that are not normally given space, to give them room. He lightly draws his hand along the northern wall of the house. His eyes wander across the building. — You know, he says this house has stood in this place for hundreds of years. You need to respect that. PEOPLE AND PLACES The building is spacious. Inside, the ceiling is high. Over three metres. That creates a unique atmosphere. It’s made for thinking. Big thoughts. The interiors are meticulously planned. The attention to detail is striking. Renovation has been careful, respectful of the origins of the building. — Everything has a story, he says. A connection either to a person or a place. The walls of the staircase leading up to the

second floor are lined with black and white pictures from Hollywood. Film photography. Original pictures. Of course. The sofa on the upper floor is designed by Edoardo himself. All the photographs on the walls is his own too. — That’s Kubu Island in Botswana, he says and points to a picture hanging above a bedside in one of the rooms. The one with the bird wallpaper. The picture looks like it was taken right out of a Tim Burton production. ARCHITECT AND MODEL BUILDER Edoardo is actually a photographer. He has been, on and off, for 40 years but he’s also an architect. Edoardo has devoted a large part of his life to building models. Skyscrapers in Dubai. Football stadiums in Portugal. Rims for Ferrari. Mostly boats though. Sailboats. Americas Cup. He ran the models through wind tunnels. — It’s exciting, he smiles. Do you know that

a model of a skyscraper sometimes needs 900 points of measurement to get a realistic picture of the actual thing? A couple of carefully selected models are now found as interior decoration throughout the main building of the Lantliv Lodge, Herrgården. A GENEROUS PHILOSOPHY Edoardo’s photographic work is all about touching minds. He generously shares his creations. No matter if it’s a Ugandan mountain gorilla, a snapshot of a smoking room in Saigon or a vast, barren Mongolian flatland in the light of dawn. Today his Facebook account alone has more than 34,000 followers. His way of looking at photography is closely related to his sense of hospitality. His philosophy of life. It’s all about giving. About being generous. Read more about Lantliv Lodge at www.lantlivlodge.com

When the air is at its crispest snow and ice often define life in Skellefteå. We build snowmen, roll snowballs that turn into snow lanterns, dig ourselves into snow banks, roll out reindeer pelts, pour hot chocolate into wooden cups and eat homemade sandwiches with thick slices of Västerbotten cheese. We also ski. Downhill, uphill and cross-country. Or ride sledges. Or snowboard. Sometimes we organise spontaneous ice hockey games. We might plough a rink on a frozen lake or put on our skates and go ice dancing with classical music and coloured lights. Sometimes we go out in public to a nearby outdoor rink, or even the Skellefteå Kraft Arena. In a way it doesn’t really matter what we do, as long as it happens in the ice and snow and we get a hefty dose of icy fresh winter air whilst the cold gently nips our noses and cheeks. Welcome to Sweden’s northernmost destination! In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east — a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west — vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is oureveryday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
