PROFESSIONAL WORK

SWAROVSKI TOWERS SITE: BUSINESS BAY, DUBAI SCOPE: SCHEMATIC/ DETAIL DESIGN PROGRAMME: HOTEL/ SERVICED APTS/ LUXURY RESIDENCES Swarovski is a well renowned brand with ventures in the hospitality sector apart from the famous crystal empire. The Swarovski towers are designed to be situated in the Business Bay area in close proximity to the Burj Khalifa. The basic concept was established prior to assigning the project to VX for further development. The facade was designed and developed by VX as an interpretation of the famous crystal cuts.

ROLE:

Designed and developed back of house spaces. Assisted in developing and producing BIM and related drawings for client and authority submissions. Produced area diagrams and calculations for GFA/ BUA/ Leasable Area. 4

CONCEPT

1

MAIN ENTRANCE

MIRRORED PANELS

The facade took its form by adopting the idea of the crystal cuts in different variations. The purpose of this was to create a distinct design that is unique to the name. The facade was divided into triangles that represented the crystal cuts that were further divided into mirrored repetitive panels.

The balconies were designed to project out to follow the same principle of triangles.

Site Location

The design of the hotel was dependant on the site context. The site being surrounded by water was taken into consideration such that the length of the hotel was oriented to face the sea to open scenic views to the residents. The slight 12:00 PM curve to the design exaggerates the confinement of the space to give a sense of privacy.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

WRKBAY SITE: ZA’ABEEL ROAD, DUBAI SCOPE: RENOVATION CONCEPT/ SCHEMATIC PROGRAMME: CO-WORK SPACE WrkBay is a refurbishment project for the renovation of an existing run down warehouse into a functional co-work space. Being redundant, the warehouse was conceptualised to work as a functional space that would serve multiple programs and groups of users. The main aim of the project was to provide rentable office spaces for start-ups or individuals as and when required for a duration specific to the tenant. In addition to this, other communal spaces like a cafe, children’s play area, meeting areas and recreational spaces were also included to suit the needs of the tenant.

ROLE:

Conducted site study and survey of existing warehouse. Developed detailed 2D drawings and 3D model for render. Assisted in designing the interior and exterior architecture. Prepared and compiled reports and presentations for client meetings. 12

EXISTING ABUTTING STRUCTURE

SIKKA

The concept of the design was to do away with all separation walls and create an open plan design. Movable partitions were considered for selected areas to establish privacy as and when required. In times of larger group events, these partitions could be removed so as to create one large space. The idea was to create an informal community-like space to be used by the public as they wish. The existing warehouse being dark and damp was designed to accentuate the idea of the ‘open plan concept’ by creating large skylights to lure in maximum natural light.

In order to cool the retail area passively, the use of the North Westerly prevailing winds was considered. This is achieved by forming a canyon at the entrance, forcing the air upwards then accelerating the wind by compressing the roof and passing the air across carefully placed water features. The hot air then escapes from the raised roof section and the remaining cool breeze continues to pass throughout the remaining retail areas, towards the promenade. A balanced wind tunnel effect is created to adequately cool customers throughout the year, without being uncomfortable. This enables to redirect the GFA to sellable area, rather than circulation.

SECTION DD’ - PASSIVE COOLING DIAGRAM

3

ENTRANCE APPROACH

PASSIVE COOLING SYSTEM - QANAT A qanāt is a gently sloping underground channel to transport water from an aquifer or water well to surface for irrigation and drinking. Qanats used in conjunction with a wind tower can provide cooling. The opening opposite the wind direction is used to move air out of the structure. Incoming air is pulled from a qanat below the structure. The air flow across the vertical shaft opening creates a lower pressure and draws cool air up from the qanat tunnel, mixing with it.

QANAT - WORKING DIAGRAM 19

PROFESSIONAL WORK

TRILEGAL SITE: LOWER PAREL, MUMBAI SCOPE: CONCEPT DESIGN - EXECUTION PROGRAMME: OFFICE TRILEGAL is one of India’s most prestigious law firms with branches in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and New Delhi. The Mumbai office site spreads across an area of 20,000 square feet with breathtaking views in all four directions. The concept adapted was based on maximising the vast openness and utilising the natural light entering through the three glazed sides of the building to try and reduce the dependancy on artificial lighting, in turn reducing energy consumption. Being a corporate office design, the idea evolved around a sleek, modernistic appeal that evoked power, yet with a warm and inviting ambience.

ROLE:

Designed elements and customised furniture for the project. Coordinated materials, furniture and other design requirements with vendors and contractor. Attended client meetings to discuss design resolution. In charge of site supervision. 20

KEY PLAN

The design sought to use autoclave aerated concrete blocks as cladding to reduce the indoor environmental impact while increasing the thermal efficiency and fire resistance due to its porous structure.

5 ENTRY PASSAGE

6 CORRIDOR

Acoustic wall panels were used as a cladding material for a unique finish while also providing sound resistance in meeting rooms.

The centre of the conference table was used as a mini garden with adaptive plants that consume minimum water apart from adding aesthetic value. Wood laminate was used for the wall finish in individual rooms as well as on furniture since they are economical and a better option instead of solid wood.

ACADEMIC WORK LAKE SUPERIOR NATIONAL MARINE CONSERVATION AREA RESEARCH STATION SITE: FLUOR ISLAND, LAKE SUPERIOR, ONTARIO SCOPE: SEMESTER 2 FINAL PROJECT PROGRAMME: BASE CAMP + LIFESAVING STATION The objective of this project was to provide a research basecamp infrastructure that would include seasonal basic accommodation and a life saving station to sustain up to 8 Parks Canada researchers. The goal was to eliminate the daily travel to get to Fluor Island and provide the research staff with a sheltered basecamp and basic accommodation where they could stay for up to a week. The new basecamp infrastructure was meant to be seasonal (May to October), and completely off-grid in terms of waste, water and energy, however the life-saving station was to be designed for year around functionality. The project was worked in a group and was designed to be a remote passive research lab that is a prefabricated Net Zero structure to relate to the context and immediate environment. The design adopted the principle of compact designing to reduce the carbon footprint and optimize functionality. 23

CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS Construction - Prefab Single Stud Wall System

Benefits of prefabrication: Improves project scheduling Quality control Aids seasonal construction Material and cost saving Environment friendly FSC plywood partitioning walls

The site being situated in a remote location, construction on site would prove to be extremely expensive and would increase time of construction and site disturbance. Hence prefabricating the structure is a better option to minimize site intervention and energy consumption.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES

DAYLIGHT SIMULATION

Energy self sufficiency through energy efficiency and renewable energy (path to Net Zero Energy and Carbon)

Watershed management and water efficiency (path to Net Zero Water)

Harness Ecosystem benefits for Health and Wellbeing through existing biodiversity conservation and enhanced flora and fauna of site

PASSIVE SOLAR AND NATURAL VENTILATION

Resource recovery through waste management (path to 100% recovery from waste)

Conservation of soil fertility/ nutrients through top oil conservation and sedimentation control

To measure the amount of daylight into the spaces, a simulation was done for one day of each of the operational months at 9 am, 2 pm and 5 pm respectively. The results obtained were merged to derive the average amount of daylight for the day. The originated days’ results were further merged to obtain Footcandle levels measured at 0.85 meters above floor plate the average daylighting throughout the 0 19 37 56 74+ operational period. For a Net Zero Energy design, energy ENERGY ANALYSIS would have to be produced on-site to offset the requirement. The structure is designed to use the south-facing roof to harness solar energy using solar panels inclined at an optimal angle to capture maximum sunlight. The energy analysis was performed in Sefaira using ASHRAE 90.1 - 2019 as the standard baseline. Net Zero Water can be achieved through the proposed system which distributes water that is hydropneumatically pressurized to reduce the energy and water demand. Washing water is recycled for flushing which is controlled by concealed pressure type cistern for water conservation. Drip irrigation is used to reduce water consumption. Roof rainwater is stored in rainwater tank and excess water is sent to the ground through rainwater harvesting system.

ACADEMIC WORK

DESIGN DISSERTATION SITE: SEA ROCK HOTEL, BANDRA-MUMBAI YEAR: 5TH YEAR THESES CONCEPT: SENSORY PERCEPTION PROGRAMME: MUSIC/ CULINARY ART SCHOOL Interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand environment is called Sensory Perception. The idea of this concept developed from my interest in food. The simple notion of how food activates one’s senses provoked me to research about how every little information is perceived by the human brain through the sensory organs. The amalgamation of the site with the program was consciously developed by introducing natural elements into the masterplan to promote the idea of the concept.

SITE:

Situated in one of Mumbai’s prime location, the Sea Rock site was favourable for this design for a number of reasons. The prime factor is that the site is surrounded by natural elements like rocks, greenery and the sea at its periphery which became the key focal points to drive the design. Bandra is thought to be the upcoming cultural hub with numerous art and other festivals being held in various parts of the area. Using the site as a platform for these events would increase the public interaction with the design, thus creating varied experiences. 28

SENSORY PROCESSING

ENVIRONMENT

PERCEPTION

DECEPTION

Interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. It is the activity between brain cells.

Illusion

The different regions of the brain that receive inputs from the sensory organs may not be solely responsible for only one sensory modality, but could use multiple inputs to perceive what the body senses about the environment. It deals with how the brain processes multiple sensory inputs into usable functional outputs.

Also known as misperception. Hallucinations and illusions. Both groups of phenomena are themselves classified as perceptual disturbances.

TYPES OF SENSES: Sight, sound, taste, smell and touch.

Emotions HOW IS THE MEMORY TRIGGERED?

One perceives the environment in different parts and pieces. The memory does not have all these pieces together. It’s more like a puzzle of images of the perceptions of the human senses.

Memories relating to an event are scattered across the brain’s sensory centres that are overlapped by a region called hippocampus. When one sense evokes a memory, all other senses are also triggered.

EXPERIMENT - SIGHT/ SOUND SIMULATION

SOUND BOX INFERENCE

THE SOUND BOX

30

The set up of the sound box consists of three audio/ video devices (preferably cell phone) placed at the cutouts from which the audio and video clips will be played in a particular sequence. The sequence of events in the sound box are generated in such a way so as to create a sense of repetition. Due to this, the observer is persuaded to relate a previous event with the following one. A single event in the sequence, when disturbed evokes a state of confusion within the mind of the viewer which is then stabilised after a while, since the mind gets used to Diagram represents the the new sequence. events that happen at different times throughout the sequence. Multiple lights and sounds generated at the same time provokes the observer to focus on the one that gains the attention.

Darker lines represent the event happening at that moment while the lighter lines represent the event that fades out of the memory. When the sequence is repeated, the memory of the former event is generated once again.

ACADEMIC WORK

JAI VAKEEL SITE: SEWRI, MUMBAI YEAR: 4TH YEAR PROGRAMME: SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL The main aim of this project was to design a campus for children with special needs where they can grow in an environment that enhances positive learning and teaches them various skills so that they can sustain their future independently. This process of master planning involved analysing the site carefully and designing the campus, keeping in mind the sensitive aspect attached to it. The primary goal of this master plan design was to develop a definite circulation path for both pedestrians as well as vehicles. This design aimed at establishing an interaction of the common public with the children of this school in order to display their skills, thus creating a semi-public area where the products made by these children could be used to generate funds for themselves. Large open spaces were incorporated to generate a connectivity between the interior and exterior.

The functions progress from public towards the road to private as one moves deeper into the site. The Public building is where all the handmade products are sold and most interaction with the common public takes place. Attached to it is the Vocational building which also promotes public interaction since all the workshops are held here. The Academic block caters to all the different aspects of the students’ education along with the training of their faculty. The Mess, Recreational block and the Dormitories are completely private catering to the students of the school only.
