WHAT WE WILL COVER: Kids & Social Media - Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Bebo, Twitter & Wikipedia- chances are your child has used or registered on one of these sites already! It's changed how kids experience growing up. And in today's world thier generation are refered to often as "digital natives" and life for them is different to how we knew it to be, as such, the approach to parenting most effective has also changed arguably. We explore it from the point of the view of the "kids" & get an idea of parenting approaches taken by those attending broadly speaking. Cyberbullying, "Sexting" & Digital Footprint - Risks and issues faced by youth online commonly and what you as a parent can do to avoid and handle these issues with your kids. We provide brief overviews of the steps taken to secure privacy settings or set up an "alert" for your child & also provide take home materials and guides for each participant Downloading, Risk s to you from your child online & Legal Liability - We discuss the recent law change which see parents liable for illegal downloads & at risk of both losing thier internet connection & facing a $15,000 fine. We explain how when your child signs up to sites online they are in reality signing a contract as a minor which can be upheld in court and what that means to you.

Parenting in a Digital World: Kids & So‌

With 98% of Kiwi Schools having internet access and iGovt launched last year, the digital world is now so integrated & embedded in our societies that it is being becoming more difficult to imagine our lives without technology. For those of us who can remember the fear and threat of the "Y2K Bug", the last decade has shown us rapid and exponential growth in online technologies. Not only are our virtual realities now a part of our daily lives, but they have fundamentally and radically changed them. Today, we have got the point where reports state that one in four kids have an "online presence" before they are born. Its still largely a "wild west" online and kids remain squarely in the firing line. They are acutely aware they know much more about these technologies than any identifiable authority figure and reports show less than 50% of households appear to define or set any kind of rules around internet use. Of those parents who do set rules, it is reported only 20% of them actually try to enforce them. Three Kiwi kids have reportedly taken thier own lives after being the victim of a cyberbullying incidents since 2002 (http://www.stuff.co.nz/sunday-star-times/features/582529) - and frankly, we think thats more than enough. Working in this area for clients ourselves, we found many unanswered questions & issues, some scary & concerning behaviour & approaches of youth using digital technologies, schools in our opinion largely falling short of the responsibilities of them in such cases and the parents having no idea. Kids don't tell parents of these issues, mainly because they are afraid of having the access to them cut off. But in this day and age, it is critical that parents address conversations online, an another part of thier child's world. We will provide an overview of the existing support and resources avaliable to parents & caregivers to protect thier kids online and briefly explore some of our favourites. Provide an overview of the main concerns for parents & commonly experienced traps of youth by sharing some of our own experiences. Providing "take home" resources and guides to Family Security & Saftey online and enable discussions to focus on areas of concern or contention among attendants. Finally we will work together to draft relevant "house rules" or guidelines to attempt to iniate ongoing conversations between parents & children as in this case especially, "prevention is the best cure".
