Brookside and old Town

Neighbors!

As I write this, the landscape remains blanketed in snow from the early January storm, with temperatures plunging to deep freeze digits. Being an early riser has its perks, but my favorite is stepping outside – after layering up! One morning, the full moon illuminated the still, snowcovered world as I carefully ran along our icy road. Mars accompanied the moon, a brilliant companion in the sky, as seven planets began their planetary alignment—a rather rare phenomenon. My husband and I recently reflected on the incredible celestial displays we’ve witnessed in recent months: the total solar eclipse, the northern lights, and the October 2024 comet that won’t return for another 80,000 years, to name a few. Moments like these remind us of the significance of timing in life and how precious these once-in-alifetime experiences are.

In this issue, we meet Beau Beasley, a retired fireman and devoted fly fisherman. Beau’s life has had its own moments of significance— comparable to passing comets that forever changed his path. Over his 30-year career, Beau found solace and purpose in fly fishing, a passion that became his second career after retiring from the first. For Beau, it was never just about catching fish. Fly fishing provided him with a way to process the challenges of life as a fireman. Without it, he might not have had the resilience to build such a long and impactful career.

We also feature advice from Marianne Clyde on self-love and why it’s the foundation for loving others, as well as an events calendar with ways to get out and enjoy the snowy season!

I hope you enjoy this issue and find yourself in the right place at the right time throughout the year!

It’s not about the 昀椀sh

Brookside resident, Beau Beasley, is a retired career captain with Fairfax County Fire & Rescue. During his 30 years and the thousands of calls he responded to, two changed the trajectory of his life.

Beau’s father was a career firefighter in Chesapeake, Virginia. But it wasn’t until Beau attended a church camp that his path became clear. He met a girl whose church he later visited and sang at. Her father was a career firefighter with Fairfax County and asked Beau if he had ever considered the field. He added that Beau would make a great fireman. A seed was planted, and when he turned 19, he moved from South Hill, Virginia to Northern Virginia where he was eventually hired by Fairfax County Fire & Rescue.

At 25, Beau responded to a call about a 70-year-old man at Burke Lake Park experiencing heart palpitations after a bee sting. During the ambulance ride, Beau struck up a conversation to keep the man calm, asking if he fished at the park. The man, Bob Guess, was an avid fly fisherman and responded yes and o ered to take Beau fly fishing. On his next day o , Beau met Bob at Burke Lake, and that introduction to fly fishing became a lifelong passion.

The two struck up a friendship that spanned decades. Beau discovered that Bob was well-known among Virginia fly anglers for his expertise in tying surface flies, known as popping bugs. Beau still has some of Bob’s popping bugs and thinks of Bob every time he uses them.

For Beau, fly fishing became more than a hobby—it was a refuge. Over his career, Beau witnessed countless traumatic events, including many that he couldn’t share with friends or family. Fly fishing provided solace, o ering quiet moments to process these experiences. “If I wanted fish, I would have gone to Wegmans,” he often quips.

Some of Beau’s favorite fishing spots include Virginia’s James and New Rivers, though he also enjoys casting a line at the Brookside community lakes. “With a pair of waders and a handful of bass flies, I could escape my world of lights and sirens and enter another in which I could hear the buzzing of a passing dragonfly, witness bass chasing minnows on the shoreline, or watch the rings emanating from a rising trout,” Beau reflected in a 2022 article for Trout Unlimited Beau retired in 2015 at 49, channeling his passion into writing and conservation advocacy. He’s authored three books,

penned numerous articles, and now directs the annual Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival held each January in Doswell, Virginia. His work has earned him accolades for investigative reporting and conservation e orts.

The second, life-changing, call during his career with the Fire Department came in his late twenties when he responded to a call about a terminally ill man with lung cancer struggling to breathe.

Straying from his usual practice, Beau asked the man what it felt like to be near the end of life. The man dismissed the idea of eternity, remarking that life simply ends. Beau, who had been reading More than a Carpenter, shared the book with him. The man jested that his daughters, whom he called "fundamentalist nuts," might get along well with Beau. True to his word, Beau sent the book. About a month later, he called to check in. The man’s daughter, Leila, answered and shared that her father had passed away. Beau expressed his condolences, sharing that he’d recently lost his own father. He o ered a heartfelt piece of advice: “The people you love most may not know how to reach out to you in your pain, but strangers, like me, might show up to be there for you.”

© Best Version Media

Leila invited Beau to dinner with her mother as a way of saying thank you for his extra e orts in following up with her father. A year later, the two were married, and this past year, they celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Maggie and Jeremiah, and recently welcomed their first grandchild, Constantine.

Today, Beau channels his love for fly fishing into teaching

others through books, articles, and speaking engagements. For Beau, it’s never been about the fish—it’s about the connections forged along the water. When asked what he would do if he could go back and relive one moment, Beau’s answer is simple: “I’d fish with my dad one more time.”

As temperatures drop, your skin may be feeling the e ects of winter's harsh conditions. To keep your skin healthy and hydrated, we are sharing 8 easy skincare tips:

Skincare 101: Winter

Expert Tips for Beating Dry Skin

4. Exfoliate Occasionally: Remove dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliator, but don't overdo it – once or twice a week is plenty.

1. Gentle Cleansing: Use a natural, nourishing oil cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of essential oils.

2. Hydration is Key: Moisturize regularly with a rich, noncomedogenic moisturizer to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier.

5. Humidify Your Space: Invest in a humidifier to add moisture to the air, helping your skin retain hydration.

3. Warm, Not Hot Showers: Hot water can exacerbate dryness. Opt for warm showers and pat your skin dry

6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin from the inside out.

7. Protect with a mineral SPF: Don't forget the sunscreen, even in winter. UV rays can still damage your skin, contributing to dryness.

8. Choose the Right Fabrics: Opt for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton to minimize irritation.

Taking the time to invest in your daily skincare routine is a ritual that will bring a touch of joy to your daily selfcare. Finding the perfect products for you should have you looking forward to washing your face every day!

Repleni猀栀ing ELECTROLYTE WATER

Low on energy or feeling depleted? Try this hydrating and refreshing Electrolyte Water recipe.

When we are burned out or stressed, our bodies burn through mineral and nutrient stores much faster. This beverage can help replenish and support your body through these transitional times.

We chose Himalayan pink salt as it can also help detoxify the body and soften the skin. It also contains a unique combo of minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium, that help to stimulate circulation and detoxify the body. By helping to flush out toxins, it can reduce pu iness and support healthy skin.

Raw honey not only improves digestion and strengthens the immune system it keeps your body hydrated and promotes that healthy glow.

Fresh lemon juice also aids in digestion, reduces inflammation in the body, and gives your immune system a boost—yes, all supporting healthy, glowing skin!

When choosing sparkling water, we always choose bottles in glass over cans, as aluminum has been linked to some diseases, so we just avoid it whenever possible.

Fun fact: staying hydrated and flushing toxins from your body can help reduce dark circles under the eyes.

Ingredients:

1 lemon juiced

1 pinch pink Himalayan salt

1/4 cup warm water (hot water will kill the enzymes in the honey)

1 tbsp raw honey (local if possible) 8-10 oz. sparkling water (optional) 1 scoop of grass-fed, unflavored collagen (we choose Live Conscious)

How To:

Place your honey in a heat-safe jar, add your salt (and collagen if using), and pour the warm water over. Stir to dissolve.

Add in your lemon juice and top o with sparkling water. ENJOY!

comfortable home starts with the right balance of temperature and humidity. Insulation combined with dehumidification can help in achieving this. Proper insulation helps regulate indoor temperature, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By preventing heat loss or gain, it also reduces energy costs, making your home more e icient. Common areas to insulate include attics, walls, and crawl spaces.

Dehumidification complements insulation by controlling moisture levels. High humidity can make your home feel muggy and promote mold growth, which a ects air quality. A basement or crawl space dehumidifier ensures optimal

humidity levels, creating a healthier and more comfortable environment in the rooms above.

By combining e ective insulation with dehumidification, you can prevent drafts, reduce allergens, and maintain a steady indoor climate. These upgrades not only improve comfort but also protect your home from longterm structural damage caused by excess moisture.

What they don't tell you...

We are all taught to be kind to others, to love other people, and to be generous.

The trouble is, without this next little bit of advice, that can all fall flat pretty rapidly. We can feel taken advantage of, unappreciated, and burned out. Why?

Because, unless we first learn to love ourselves…truly love and appreciate and take care of ourselves…we don’t have the capacity to take care of anyone else. Not for long anyway.

Self-love is not only a good idea, but it’s the firm foundation on which to build a strong body, strong mind, and strong spirit, from which we can draw on in order to be the person we need to be.

What self-love looks like:

ü Speak kindly and encouragingly to yourself, like you would to a young child. (That young child still lives inside of you and is depending on you to keep him/her safe.)

ü Feed your body healthy food and plenty of water. Many mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, can stem from a body that is not nurtured in this way.

ü Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night for the reason mentioned above.

ü Treat yourself well by taking the time to do things you love. Do things that make you happy and that refresh you.

ü Move your body. Take walks, exercise, get up throughout the day and move around. Keep your systems flowing and alert. Renew your energy regularly. (Have you tried dancing to happy music once in a while?)

ü Forgive yourself. For the things that you obsess over, wish you had done di erently, feel guilty about, etc. We are all human (you included) and screw up sometimes. Stop dwelling on it; fix it if you can and move on.

ü Don’t worry about what people think of you. You know as well as I do that everyone is judging from their personal nurturing, learning, growth (or not), and opinions change regularly. Everyone is insecure sometimes and projects their insecurities on others from time to time. This has nothing to do with you.

ü Know that you are created from love and at your core, you are love, joy, peace personified. So, it is your natural state of being. The opposition comes from inaccurate things that you learn along the way and internalize. Remind yourself of this often and choose truth over the beliefs in your mind that condemn you.

ü You have a purpose. There are skills and talents and gifts (even personality traits) that only you can o er the world. Know this and remind yourself often that you matter. So speak up.

When we are loved and nurtured and believe in ourselves, we, then, have a storehouse of love and kindness and generosity to share with others. Surround yourself with people who remind you of this. People who encourage you and believe in you.

Your strength comes from an internal locus of control. When we allow ourselves to be controlled by circumstances outside of our control, we feel unbalanced.

Remind yourself every day that you are amazing, exactly as you are, and your footprint in the world matters.

The History of

St. Valentine

Who was Saint Valentine and how did he come to inspire Valentine's Day?

In the early martyrologies, three di erent St. Valentines are mentioned, all sharing Feb. 14 for a feast day. Unfortunately, the historical record is sparse. The first St. Valentine was a priest and physician in Rome. He along with St. Marius and his family comforted the martyrs during the persecution of Emperor Claudius II, the Goth. Eventually, St. Valentine was also arrested, condemned to death for his

faith, beaten with clubs, and finally beheaded on Feb. 14, AD 270. He was buried on the Flaminian Way. Later, Pope Julius I (333-356) built a basilica at the site which preserved St. Valentine's tomb. Archeological digs in the 1500s and 1800s have found evidence of the tomb of St. Valentine. However, in the thirteenth century, his relics were transferred to the Church of Saint Praxedes near the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where they remain today. Also, a small church was built near the Flaminian Gate of Rome which is now known as the Porta del Popolo but was called in the 12th century "the Gate of

St. Valentine," as noted by the early British historian William Somerset (also known as William of Malmesbury, d. 1143), who ranks after St. Bede in authority.

The second St. Valentine was the Bishop of Interamna (now Terni, located about 60 miles from Rome). Under the orders of Prefect Placidus, he too was arrested, scourged, and decapitated, again su ering persecution during the time of Emperor Claudius II.

The third St. Valentine su ered martyrdom in Africa with several companions. However, nothing further is known about this saint. In all, these men, each named St. Valentine, showed heroic love for the Lord and His Church.

The popular custom of showing love and a ection on St. Valentine's Day is almost a coincidence with the feast day of the saint: During the Medieval Age, a common belief in England and France was that birds began to pair on Feb. 14, "half-way through the second month of the year." Chaucer wrote in his "Parliament of Foules" (in Old English): "For this was on Seynt Valentyne's day, When every foul cometh ther to choose his mate." For this reason, the day was dedicated to "lovers" and prompted the sending of letters, gifts, or other signs of a ection.

Another literary example of St. Valentine's Day remembrances is found in Dame Elizabeth Brews "Paston Letters" (1477), where she writes to the suitor, John Paston, of her daughter, Margery: "And, cousin mine, upon Monday is St. Valentine's day and every bird chooseth himself a mate, and if it like you to come on Thursday night, and make provision that you may abide till then, I trust to God that ye shall speak to my husband and I shall pray that we may bring the matter to a conclusion." In turn, Margery wrote to John: "Unto my right well beloved Valentine John Paston, Squyer, be this bill delivered. Right reverend and worshipful and my right well beloved Valentine, I recommend me unto you, full heartily desiring to hear of your welfare, which I beseech Almighty God long for to preserve until His pleasure and your heart's desire." While speaking

of the amorous flavor of Valentine's Day, no mention is made of the saint.

While it seems that the exchange of "valentines" is more the result of secular custom rather than the memory of St. Valentine, and that the celebration has been further paganized with cupids and the like, there is a Christian message that should be remembered. The love of our Lord, depicted beautifully in the image of His most Sacred Heart, is a sacrificial, self-less, and unconditional love. Such is the love that each Christian is called to express in his own life, for God and neighbor. Clearly, St. Valentine no matter which one showed such a love, bearing witness to the faith in his dedication as a priest and in the o ering of his own life in martyrdom. On this Valentine's day, looking to the example of this great saint, each person should o er again his love to the Lord, for only by doing so can he properly love those who are entrusted to his care and any other neighbor. Each person should again pledge his love to those loved ones, praying for their intentions, promising fidelity to them, and thanking them for their love in return. Never forget Jesus said, "This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (Jn 15:12-13). St. Valentine fulfilled this command, and may we do the same.

It’s fun, it’s interactive, and who can resist the allure of a steaming mug of cocoa topped with mountains of goodies, or even a little kick? Here’s how to create a showstopping spread.

The VIP (very important pot)

While you could go the packets of powder route, it’s better to go all out with a crockpot of homemade hot chocolate that’ll blow everyone’s socks o昀昀. All you need is milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and a splash of vanilla, and boom—you’re on your way to creamy, chocolatey goodness. You could even get fancy and whip up a white chocolate version or, for a healthier or non-dairy version, make some using almond or oat milk, and consider using a natural, low-carb sugar substitute like Allulose.

Topping Time!

Here’s where your hot chocolate bar goes from ordinary to extraordinary. You’re basically creating a DIY candy land where your guests can customize their cocoa masterpieces. So, load up on the toppings and let your guests go crazy! Here’s a sample lineup of hot chocolate must-haves:

Marshmallows: Of course you’ll want to include the classic minis, but for the coup d’etat include a variety of options like giant ones, rainbow or peppermint marshmallows for an extra flavor punch, or go gourmet and throw in some dipped and decorated creations as well (available at some candy shops, but also pretty easy to do yourself with a little melting chocolate and decorative sprinkles, crushed peppermint, nuts, coconut shreds, etc.)

Whipped Cream: Choose canned for the drama or homemade for that chef’s kiss moment. Let your guests pile it on like a snowstorm in a mug!

Chocolate Chips: Dark, milk, or white— because there’s no such thing as too much chocolate.

Candy Canes: Not only are they adorable, but they double as sweet and functional stir sticks, whether peppermint, spearmint, or a di erent fun flavor.

Syrups: A delicious drizzle of syrup makes for a nextlevel dessert-in-a-cup experience! Think caramel, chocolate, hazelnut, etc.

Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a dash of chili powder for those who like their cocoa with a little zing. You might even include some instant co ee crystals for a little co ee kick.

Cookies or Biscotti: There are so many options when it comes to decorative and tasty cookies and biscot take your choctail bar to the extreme. Guests can d dunk ’em, or just eat them straight-up—whatever you do, you’ll want a plate or two of these in your spread.

The goal is maximum fun and creativity, so make it colorful and playful.

Set out the toppings in cute bowls and jars to make your bar look Instagram-worthy.

For a playful twist, get some plain ceramic mugs (readily available at discount stores) and set out permanent markers so your guests can decorate their own mug—it’s part of the experience and doubles as a keepsake!

The fun and deliciousness is in the details, so sure, spoons are fine, but why not do chocolate dipped spoons, cinnamon sticks, or candy stir sticks to add a little extra flair, and flavor, to the stirring process.

Don’t forget to add some decorative flair—think twinkly lights, a festive tablecloth and decorations, rustic trays and tiered serving dishes, snowflake garlands, etc.

And, of course, if you’ve got adults in the guest-list mix, you may want to include a little “sumpin’, sumpin’” for a grown-up twist—think Bailey’s, Kahlua, peppermint schnapps, Amaretto, etc.

Whether you’re entertaining kids, adults, or a mix of both, a hot choctail bar will have your guests licking their lips in no time.
