Welcome to the September issue of
Brookside and old
Town Neighbors!
What an exciting issue to put together! For nearly seven years, I have had the opportunity to meet with local families, listen to and write their stories and in this issue, I get to share my family’s story!
I have enjoyed getting to know everyone and appreciate the vulnerability they open themselves up to when they grace our cover and 昀椀nd themselves on the feature pages. It was eyeopening to put myself in their shoes.

It has also been much too long since our family has taken professional photos. It was such a wonderful experience having Mindy visit our home and scope out the perfect nooks and crannies for photos. I eagerly awaited her gallery once she left!
While January is typically the season of New Beginnings, with school-age children, September feels like an appropriate time for new beginnings too. Our children are embracing the new educational implementations at each school level from new agenda books, and cell phone rules, to library noti昀椀cations. Regardless of where you stand on access to books, a head’s up of what my children are interested in is always welcome and can open up a new conversation topic.
In this issue, we present new opportunities that our readers may want to take advantage of, such as supporting Fauquier FISH through their Weekend Power Pack program, attending a women's empowerment workshop, supporting a nonpro昀椀t’s fundraising efforts to improve mental health, and even taking up 昀椀shing!
Don’t wait until January for new beginnings! Enjoy the glorious days of a Virginia fall and launch your new beginning today!
I hope you enjoy this issue!

For the O'Gradys, There's No Place Like Community
By Aimée O'Grady | Photos by e Little Photo Shop
Aimée and Shawn O’Grady have lived in Warrenton since 2004, growing their family and immersing themselves in the Warrenton community over the past twenty years. The O’Gradys moved to Warrenton from Centreville in 2004 with their three dogs and two cats… pets continue to feature prominently in the family. “The townhouse in Centerville was just too small for two people and 昀椀ve pets. We moved to Warrenton for a yard,” said Shawn.
They lived off 605/Dumfries Road for nearly nine years before relocating elsewhere in Warrenton. Then children came along, and they were ready to 昀椀nd a new home. “We just fell in love with Warrenton and limited our search to its two zip codes,” said Shawn.
We would like to thank TEAM LARSON REALTY for sponsoring the Resident Feature.
That search led them to the home they have lived in for the past eleven years.
“It all began with two sleeping children in the back seat,” said Aimée O’Grady. “Our house was for sale, and we had buyers, but nowhere to go. I had just 昀椀nished looking at a home in Broad Run on a cold day in February and as I headed home, my almost-four-year-old and 18-monthold were asleep.”
With the children sleeping in the car, she decided to drive around a bit longer and drove past a home she had looked at online. “The pictures weren’t very exciting and I couldn’t 昀椀gure out the layout. But since I had some time, I decided to go look,” she said.
© Best Version Media
Aimée was sold on the house before she even saw it. “The road approaching the house wrapped its way around a large lake. There was snow on the ground and the landscape just looked so picturesque. I fell in love before I ever saw the house,” she said.
She drove by the house without stopping. “The house sat close to a gravel lane, and I could see some lights on inside. I didn’t want to be seen driving by, but my initial reaction was that the house appeared warm inside,” she recalled.
The family returned to the house for a tour that weekend and decided to make an offer, which was accepted. “We moved in on April 30, 2013,” said Aimée.
While the house seemed large for a family of four, two more children would join the family over the following three years. “It’s the perfect size for a family of six,” said Aimée.
during COVID. Aimée meanwhile does a little bit of everything. From freelance writing to subbing at their children’s school, to helping aging veterans with Hero’s Bridge. “I’ve taken on a lot of part-time and freelance work to have the 昀氀exibility I need for our kids. For the most part, it’s worked well,” she said.
She now adds, Small Business Owner to her list of titles. Aimée recently opened Liv Creatively on Waterloo Street in Warrenton. Liv Creatively is a maker space with something for everyone. Born out of observance of her crafty daughter, Livia, Aimée wanted to create a space where anyone could realize their creative ideas. With a little something for everyone (all ages are welcome), anyone who wants to do a craft can make their idea a reality at the maker space.
For the past eleven-plus years, the couple has lived and played, and for Aimée at least, worked in Warrenton. Shawn has an of昀椀ce in Herndon but has worked remotely since well before it became common
The new business is a family endeavor that doesn’t take her away from the kids but rather engages them.
“Everyone has a role to play at the maker space,” she said. “Our son is the on-site manager when I am not there, and the girls all lend a hand to new makers to help them with the different stations and help determine what gets added next.”
less than 10 days, Laura secured an allcash offer for our property, exceeding our expectations in every way. Her deep knowledge of the real estate market and her strategic approach were evident throughout the transaction. She was always available to answer our questions, offer guidance, and ensure that everything moved forward seamlessly. What truly sets Laura apart is her genuine care for her clients. She didn't just treat us as business partners; she treated us like friends. Her warm personality and dedication made us feel supported and confident every step of the way. In fact, we are now friends, and we couldn't be more appreciative of everything she has done for us.
© Best Version Media
Even the family’s newest pet, a King Charles Spaniel named Toby, has a job. “He’s our emotional support animal. Working at the stations can become frustrating. When that happens, we want makers to stop what they are doing and give Toby a little love to help them reset,” she said.
The new family business has allowed the family to engage more deeply in a community they have come to love. “I have been involved with Warrenton activities in some way for many years. Warrenton’s size makes it possible to wrap your arms around it and contribute,” she said.
The O’Grady children have grown up in Warrenton and involve themselves in their community like their parents. Caden is 15 and a sophomore at Fauquier High School where he is a “threeseason runner” as a member of the Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track teams. Outside of school, he stays busy as a lifeguard at the W.A.R.F. and assists at the family’s maker space.
Adele, 12, is in 7th grade at Marshall Middle School where she also runs cross country. Outside of school she enjoys CrossFit, riding horses, being a mother’s helper, and helping out at the maker space.
Livia, 10, is in 5th grade at C.M. Bradley Elementary. She plays soccer in the fall and spring, loves art and anything creative, and loves
being at the maker space. The name, Liv Creatively, was inspired by Livia's own name.
The youngest, Myrah is 7 and in 2nd grade at C.M.B. She plans to play soccer this fall, wants to learn how to play the guitar, and has dreams of traveling as a 昀氀ight attendant (or perhaps a pilot, mom hopes) when she grows up.
When the O’Gradys aren’t focused
on their maker space, they enjoy spending time together and traveling. Now that school has started, Aimée says she “can’t wait for cooler weather, darker skies, warm 昀椀res, starlit nights, and 昀氀urries that accumulate.” The family is hoping for enough snow to get in some good skiing this winter, but not so much that they can’t get to the slopes, that they stay healthy and injury-free in their respective sports, and that they can further immerse themselves in
the community by welcoming more and more makers and community groups to the Liv Creatively maker space.

The Compleat Angler author Izaak Walton famously said that he had “laid aside business and gone a-昀椀shing.” Today, 370 years later, far too few of us follow his example. It isn’t only that we’re all plugged in, attached to devices, and hopelessly harried; it’s that, sadly, many people think of 昀氀y 昀椀shing as work--the last thing we need more of! Perhaps dispelling a few of the myths that surround the quiet sport of 昀氀y 昀椀shing will go a long way toward encouraging us to join the spirit of Izaak Walton on Virginia’s plentiful waterways.
MYTH #1: Fly 昀椀shing is new. Actually, our old friend Walton was a latecomer to the sport! Fly 昀椀shing dates at least as far back as the Egyptians.
MYTH #2: Fly 昀椀shing is complicated. In fact, nothing could be simpler: Conventional anglers cast bait on a weighted lure, whereas 昀氀y anglers cast a weighted line. It’s the line that carries the 昀氀y--an arti昀椀cial lure--rather than the reverse.
MYTH #3: Fly tying is hard. Perhaps, perhaps not--but does that even matter? It’s as easy as pie to pick up 昀氀ies from a 昀氀y shop. These 昀氀y patterns mimic just about anything a 昀椀sh would eat, from midges, dragon昀氀ies, and bees, to frogs, bait昀椀sh, and even baby ducklings.
MYTH #4: Fly anglers 昀椀sh for trout. Reid Parker— co-owner of Richmond’s Current Culture Fly Shop (www. currentculture昀氀y.com) and veteran 昀氀y angler for decades-begs to differ: “Right here in Virginia, you can 昀氀y 昀椀sh for darn near anything, including large and smallmouth bass, carp, longnose gar, bo昀椀n, cat昀椀sh, and bluegill. You can even 昀氀y 昀椀sh on Virginia’s beaches and catch speckled sea trout, stripers, and red drum.”
MYTH #5: Fly 昀椀shing is expensive. Just like conventional tackle, an entry-level 昀氀y-昀椀shing kit can be had for peanuts. Sure, when you inevitably become obsessed with 昀氀y 昀椀shing, you will spend money on your new, beloved hobby. But isn’t that true of any habit worthy of the name?
MYTH #6: Fly 昀椀shing is for someone else. Whether you believe that the quiet sport is for someone richer than you are or someone who looks different from you--frankly, you’re wrong. Fly angling is for everyone, from every walk of life.
If you’re game to wet your 昀氀y line but uncertain where to begin, then you won’t want to miss the 24th Annual Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival, held entirely indoors at the Meadow Event Park (home of the State Fair of Virginia) in Doswell on Friday, January 10, and Saturday, January 11, 2025. You’ll meet more than 90

Beyond the Cast students meet new friends, guides, and 昀椀shing partners while they learn from expert anglers—including members of the USA Women’s Fly Fishing Team— important tips like how to rig a 昀氀y rod and how to select the right 昀氀ies and gear for a local outing. vendors, from 昀氀y shop and lodge owners to 昀氀y tyers to 昀氀y-昀椀shing guides from Virginia, the Mid-Atlantic, other regions of the contiguous 48—and destinations as far昀氀ung as Alaska, Canada, and Brazil. Enjoy dozens of free seminars, casting demonstrations, 昀氀y-tying demos, and free walkup casting and 昀氀y-tying instruction, or dig a little deeper with paid specialty instruction for anglers of all levels. Attendees 21 years and older enjoy tastings from eight Virginia wineries and three Virginia distilleries with their paid admission.
In an effort to draw more women into the quiet sport, the Virginia Fly & Wine offers something unique: the Beyond the Cast Women’s Fly Fishing Symposium, sponsored by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation

Common Causes of Water Damage in Home Kitchens
TBy Joel Lloyd
he kitchen, often considered the heart of your home, is also one of the most vulnerable areas for water damage. At Voda Cleaning and Restoration, we understand how quickly water-related issues can escalate in this crucial space. From minor leaks to signi昀椀cant 昀氀oods, recognizing and preventing common sources of kitchen water damage is essential. This guide highlights key water hazards in the kitchen and how to avoid them.
Plumbing Problems
Kitchens are prone to plumbing issues, with pipes and 昀椀xtures often susceptible to leaks or bursts. Regularly inspect the plumbing under sinks, around faucets, and any exposed pipes for signs of wear or leaks. Early detection is critical to preventing severe damage. If you notice any dampness, corrosion, or bulging hoses, take immediate action.
Appliance Failures
Dishwashers, refrigerators with ice makers, and other water-using appliances are frequent culprits of kitchen water damage. Regularly check appliance hoses and connections for leaks or kinks. Replace any brittle, cracked, or leaking hoses promptly. Ensuring that appliances are correctly installed and leveled can help prevent unexpected water mishaps.
Clogged Drains and Sink Issues
Clogged or slow-draining sinks can eventually lead to over昀氀ows and leaks. Keep your sink and garbage disposal clear of food scraps and grease, which can cause blockages. Using a safe, natural drain cleaner regularly can help maintain clear pipes and prevent clogs.
Accidental Over昀氀ows and Spills
In a busy kitchen, over昀氀ows from sinks or dishwashers
are possible. If an over昀氀ow occurs, immediately turn off the appliance or water source. Promptly clean and dry the affected area to prevent water from seeping into your 昀氀ooring or cabinets.
Structural Problems and Poor Insulation
Structural issues like poor insulation or cracks in the 昀氀ooring can worsen water damage. Regular inspections can help identify potential problem areas. Proper insulation around pipes and areas near your kitchen can prevent freezing and subsequent bursts during colder months.
Dealing with Water Damage in the Kitchen
If you encounter water damage despite preventive efforts, swift action is essential. Turn off the water source and electricity to the affected area, then contact Voda Cleaning and Restoration immediately. Our 24-hour emergency service ensures a rapid and effective response to minimize damage to your kitchen.
Preventive Measures and Routine Maintenance
The best defense against kitchen water damage is regular maintenance. Schedule annual inspections of your kitchen’s plumbing and appliances. Monitor areas prone to water exposure, and don’t ignore warning signs like minor leaks or damp spots.
Proactive maintenance and quick responses to potential issues can protect your kitchen from water damage disasters. Voda Cleaning and Restoration is here to assist with any water damage restoration needs, offering expert services to keep your home safe and dry. Contact us for advice, inspections, or emergency assistance.

AFIVE
Hygienic Habits you NEED to Update Right Now 5
fter some-odd years of life, you probably think, “Haven’t I got this all 昀椀gured out?!” Uhm, maybe not. Sure, you’re washing your hands and brushing your teeth, but we’re not talking about the basics. In this labyrinth of cleanliness, we’re breaking down your bathroom door, invading your makeup bag, and even sneak-peaking that messy drawer. So, are you ready to take a deep (disinfected) breath and roll up your sleeves? Well, grab your sanitizer! Here we go!
Cleansing with regular body wash
Standard body wash smells and lathers up amazing— no question about it! Just one problem though: we’re soaking up the good as well as the bad! Basic drugstore body washes serve a toxic buffet of chemicals: parabens, perfumes, alcohol, sulfates, etc. Instead, opt for an organic artisanal soap. Crafted with plant-based nutrients and skin-balancing probiotics, it hydrates and cleanses the skin, leaving it butter-soft and fresh!
Using dirty makeup brushes
As one of the most common bathroom no-nos, dirty makeup brushes are the crème-de-la-crème of hygienic mishaps! Think about the amount of microbial grime that festers in our brushes. Bacteria, oil, dirt—sometimes even fungi (ew!)—these are the culprits coating our skin in 昀椀lth!
To prevent breakouts, we must cleanse our makeup brushes every two weeks with organic plant-based soap and warm water. And be sure to blow dry them to prevent mold from growing in the wet bristles.
Extra tip: As a side note, remember to cleanse your phone screen regularly too (for the same reason).
Leaving dry shampoo in your hair
Every lazy girl who loves 昀氀uffy hair swears by dry shampoo. We get it! As a one-day shortcut, this option is
昀椀ne—BUT not as a daily hair hack for more volume!
Dry shampoo accumulates on the scalp, blocking the hair follicles which can stunt growth over time. We’re better off settling for a couple of days of 昀氀at, semi-greasy hair than clogging our roots with this chalky residue!
Using basic deodorant
Having blossom-fresh pits is provides peace of mind. Sure. However, with standard deodorants, that waft of perfume under your arms comes from toxic chemicals like alcohol and aluminum. Meanwhile, this gunk doesn’t only block our sweat glands, it also contains drying ingredients that irritate our underarms. For a healthier route to breezy-clean pits, go for a plant-based deodorant. And no, this isn’t a hipster hygiene hack for naturalists who don’t mind extra BO. Read our article on the perks of plant-based deodorants to learn more!
Creating scented baths
For the same reason we don’t use standard deodorants, we don’t take dips in candy-scented bubble baths—one word: toxic! These standard aromatic formulas contain phthalates, alcohols, and other hard-to-pronounce nasties. So skip the standard bath soaps and instead opt for Dead Sea salt. Enriched with 21 skin-loving minerals, it helps calm and nourish your skin while turning your tub into a 昀氀oaty aquatic escape you’ll love returning to!
Hygiene isn’t just about forest-crisp scents or the appearance of purity—after all, looks can be deceiving. And this includes other naughty habits: the '昀椀ve-secondrule' food pickups, neglecting the 'behind-the-ear' clean, or keeping that mascara for decades. Ultimately, hygiene is more than a choice, it’s a lifestyle.

EasyFruit + Oat Bake

OLove + Be Well by Natalie
nly 5 minutes to prep and 25 minutes to bake this delicious Fruit + Oat Bake. No special chopping or baking skills are needed here. We have been throwing this together in the mornings while we sip our coffee. Works wonderfully with any frozen berry or fruit. We used peaches and blueberries for this recipe. We have even added chia seeds before baking making this a powerhouse GLOW food! Berries are full of antioxidants to help repair and brighten the skin. Oats help boost collagen production, reduce in昀氀ammation, and improve your overall complexion. Banana is a great antioxidant that helps remove toxins from the body and clear the skin.
How To:
Heat oven to 325.
Optional - 2-3 tsp chia seeds and or unsweetened shredded coconut
Grab a small baking dish and wipe it with coconut oil. Place the banana in the dish and smash it with a fork.
Sprinkle with oats. Pour milk over the banana and oats. Top with fruit and coconut.
Place in the oven to bake for 25 mins.
When done you can dish it up as is, or serve it with some vanilla Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey!

IUnlock Your Potential at the Women’s Empowerment Experience Women’s
By Mary Panuayann | Photos by Amy Fuentes
n a world where nearly 80 percent of women struggle with self-esteem and self-advocacy at work, the Women's Empowerment Experience is a beacon of hope and transformation. Scheduled for October 12-13, 2024, this dynamic two-day event is designed to inspire, empower, and elevate women from all backgrounds, offering a unique opportunity to break free from limiting beliefs and create a life they love and deserve.
THE BIRTH OF A VISION
The event's creator, Amy Fuentes, recalls how the Women’s Empowerment Experience came to life. "It started as a whisper, a 昀氀eeting thought that I quickly ignored. Until it got louder," she says. Amy felt a compelling need to create a space where women could gather to receive the support, community, and knowledge necessary to become the best versions of themselves. Like many, she procrastinated, thinking she would pursue this dream one day, maybe in a year or two. But the message grew louder and louder until it couldn’t be ignored. Thus, the Women’s Empowerment Experience was born.
A PERFECT SETTING
Choosing the location was easy for Amy. Laurel Ridge Community College in Warrenton, with its beautiful conference space, was the ideal venue. Hosting the event in the fall symbolizes the "leaving" and letting go of old
beliefs, thoughts, and limitations to make space for new growth. The dates were set for October 12-13, 2024, and Amy quickly got to work.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EMPOWERMENT
The Women’s Empowerment Experience focuses on 昀椀ve key areas crucial to personal and professional growth: Finances/Money, Health/Nutrition, Career/Business, Personal/Professional Relationships, and Mindset. These areas were chosen based on Amy’s own experiences and the recognition that many women need support in these

aspects of their lives. She has enlisted a group of exceptional professionals and coaches eager to share their expertise and inspire attendees.
TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
This event is designed to provide more than just information; it offers transformation. Attendees will engage in practical workshops and interactive sessions, ensuring they leave with actionable strategies and personalized roadmaps to implement in their lives immediately.
Unlike traditional conferences where attendees often leave feeling empowered but unsure how to apply what they've learned; this event ensures participants have time to integrate new knowledge. Creating and re昀椀ning personal roadmaps during the event helps attendees leave with clear, actionable plans.
The Women's Empowerment Experience is an excellent opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded women. As we
age, making friends and having fun can become more challenging. This event creates a vibrant atmosphere where women can form meaningful relationships while working towards their goals.
FROM WHISPER TO REALITY
What started as a whisper, a 昀氀eeting idea back in October 2023, is now becoming a reality. Amy wants to share with other women how to turn their thoughts and dreams into tangible achievements. She believes that with the right support and guidance, anyone can undergo this transformation.
JOIN THE MOVEMENT
Tickets for the Women's Empowerment Experience are available online at https://bit.ly/ WomensEmpowermentExperience. For those hesitant to come alone, Amy invites you to 昀椀nd the courage to attend. "You may arrive knowing no one, but you will leave knowing everyone," she assures.
The Women’s Empowerment Experience is not just an event—it’s a movement. It’s an opportunity to celebrate achievements, foster connections, and equip women with the tools they need to thrive personally and professionally.
Join us for a life-changing weekend dedicated to empowering women to reach their full potential. For more information and to register, visit the event website.

Our message for this event is "No one is alone — because anyone/everyone can be an encourager." Come join us in this important cause.
We are hosting this event to raise funds for mental health, but also to support one of our own community members that was affected by a mental health crisis in November 2022. His name is Brayden Blocker and he is a huge Marvel fan (hence, the theme of this run)! Last year, he joined the race in a push wheelchair, but this year, thanks to all of his PT/ OT therapy and help from the community, he will be able to take physical steps across the start line! Come out and witness his miraculous progress.
Thanks to the amazing turnout last year, we are able to make this 5K an annual event and are excited to host it once again this year. We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to local charities that are near and dear to our hearts, as well. Please help us make this happen by supporting our cause and joining in this event! The charities include: Morgan's Message, The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation, Pray for Brayden, and Mental Health Association.
Health Hero 5k is a step towards breaking down barriers and raising awareness. Let's lace up our shoes, join the race, and show support for those who need it most. Together, we can encourage one another to keep moving forward and break the stigma. We look forward to seeing our community at Park Valley Church.
You are important, enough, and needed.
If you'd like to join our power team, we are still welcoming sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and runners. We anticipate having multiple vendors on site for shopping/eating. Don't want to run or volunteer? That's okay, we welcome all those who may just want to come out and cheer a superhero to the 昀椀nish line or support mental health awareness. Our goal is to have a fun-昀椀lled positive day for a good cause.
Every step we take in the Mental
