t’s the time of year when the leprechaun pops up, throwing rainbows and gold coins, and we hope to be lucky enough to catch one! But is good fortune really about luck? I would say luck plays a part, but it's not the whole story.
People are lucky in the sense that they are born in certain locations or circumstances or with innate abilities that may help them succeed in life. But like a 昀氀ower without sunshine and water for nurturing, those advantages may wither.
Many people could use a champion—someone to pour the water and bring the sunshine. It could be a parent, relative, teacher, coach, neighbor, friend, or just someone who is there to rally them and help them realize their potential.
In my family, I feel like a watchdog, carefully observing my children’s every move and looking for things to foster within them, be they hobbies or interests. Then it’s a game of “I spy.” I spy an art studio for my little crafter! I spy a horse barn for my equestrian! I spy a team for my runner to join!
Personally, I feel the onus is on parents to expose children to as much as they can and, if something grabs hold of them, to begin pouring water and letting the light shine!
This month, we introduce you to the Moriartys. Paul and Holly have spent nearly a decade fostering the interests and talents of their children. And wow, their effort paid off.
We also provide information about local nonpro昀椀ts that lend a hand to old and young alike to ensure they are living their very best lives. Our calendar of events will help 昀椀ll your free time and our experts offer some terri昀椀c advice.
I hope sunshine and water rain down on all your pursuits and that you enjoy this month’s issue!

The Moriarty children are fortunate to have had some incredible experiences in their young lives. Experiences that wouldn’t be possible without the support, understanding, and love of their parents.
We would like to thank Team Larson Realty for sponsoring the Resident Feature.
Paul Moriarty was born in England where he lived until he was seven. He then spent nine years living around the world in Kenya, then at an English Boarding School, followed by Norway with his family. The family then moved to the United States and settled in New Jersey. Because of this upbringing, anywhere in the world feels accessible and only a 昀氀ight away to Paul.
The well-traveled man met Holly during their freshman year at the University of Rhode Island.
Holly moved along the Eastern Seaboard rather than between continents. She was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Silver Spring, MD, before the family moved to Rhode Island. She enjoyed her upbringing in the small city
of Newport. “It was a safe place for young kids to make a few mistakes,” she reminisced.
Holly and Paul eventually settled in Northern Virginia, following a few years in Arizona and a few more in the Northeast.
They have three children: Sydney, 23, Bailey, 21, and Luke,18.
Intentional or not, their parenting style is best described as letting the children lead and lending support and advice when needed. The result of this style is three young adults who have each achieved success unrealized by many people at the very end of life, never mind as late teens and young adults in their early twenties.
Putting it succinctly, saying the girls ride horses and Luke plays lacrosse is like saying the Mona Lisa is a small painting. It leaves out the mastery of the artist.

Each of the Moriarty children has reached a level of mastery in their area of expertise.
Sydney will 昀椀nish medical school at 24, is already a published author of 3 articles, is heavily involved in the safety of equestrian helmets project (with several more articles in the pipeline), and has imported and trained nine Warm Blood show jumper horses for the Hunter Jumper circuit.
Bailey is in her third year of nursing school, rides with the Randolph Macon Equestrian team, and was invited to ride with the Team USA Student Riding Team (AIEC, SRNC shows) in Europe, where in the 2022 World Finals she 昀椀nished 5th in Dressage, 7th in show jumping, and 5th overall. She has ridden with the Student Riding Team abroad four times in the past 12 months, recently returning from France for her second World Finals 昀椀nishing 5th in Show Jumping.
Luke, a senior at Kettle Run High School, is the goalie for his high school lacrosse team. He was picked up by Walsh University (Division II) in Ohio and will play for them in the fall when he heads off to college. But that’s not the 昀椀rst time Luke’s lacrosse has gotten some attention.
At just 16, Luke was playing at a prospect showcase in New Jersey when the manager of the Panama National Lacrosse Team noticed him. “They called us after the showcase, and we ended up going to South Dakota, where he played for the team,” said Holly. He was ultimately asked to join them. “The team is a wonderful group of men who protect Luke like their younger brother.” He now plays internationally with Team Panama.
Once in Ohio, Luke plans to study exercise science or biology and possibly pursue graduate work in prosthetics. He says he is from a medical family, so he will likely end up doing something in the medical the 昀椀eld.

who have set the bar high.
Holly earned her Doctor of Chiropractic from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. She runs two practices focusing on athletic injuries. Paul served as the chief of police at Quantico until 2015, when he switched gears to manage the family’s companies, including the chiropractic practices and the family’s horse farm. Today, Paul and Holly support their children in their intensive pursuits.
“When Sydney was only 7, someone paid me back some money they owed me with horse lessons for both her and her sister, and the girls’ 昀椀re for riding was lit,” said Holly. Both girls rode long enough to begin riding problem horses to make them more rideable. It wasn’t long after that the girls were buying and re昀椀ning horses for resale. “This buying and selling of horses helped the girls earn the money they needed to buy high-quality horses for their sports,” said Holly.
Soon sights were set on European horses. At 14, Sydney had saved enough money to travel to Europe and import a horse back to the United States. “We had a trainer lined up to help us in German,” said Holly.
Unexpectedly, the trainer had to cancel. Paul stepped in and made a few calls to friends and family in England. He told Sydney to 昀椀nd some horses in England to look at, and he would book a 昀氀ight. Sydney and Paul took time to visit Europe before seeing the potential horses. She ended up bringing two back to the States to train.
Paul and Holly give tremendous credit to Fauquier County Public Schools for working with them. “It would have been very dif昀椀cult for our children to take advantage of these amazing opportunities if the school system wasn’t willing to work with us,” said Holly of the opportunity to study virtually and earn college credits.
With the children heading off in every direction, time together is limited. Paul and Holly recently sold their Nokesville farm and bought a house in Old Town Warrenton. “We wanted a home the children could come home to and have their own space,” said Holly of the
charming 1940s home they have been renovating for several months.
The home is just down the street from Holly’s sister and father. “During the early phase of the renovations, we all moved in with family. Luke stayed with my father, and we moved in with my sister, who lives across the street from him,” said Holly.
Paul and Holly look forward to seeing what opportunities lie ahead for their children and welcome them back home with stories to share.

ABOUT THE 5K MEDALS
Each year, Hero's Bridge selects one image to honor our Vietnam Veterans on the 5K 昀椀nisher medal. Read the meaning behind each image.
2024: THE COMBAT MEDIC
This year, we are proud to honor the Vietnam Combat Medic for their exemplary bravery in a hostile environment on our 昀椀nisher medal.
The life expectancy of a combat medic during a 昀椀re昀椀ght was a mere 6 seconds. That of a medevac crew wasn't much longer at 19 minutes. Medics were shot at regularly by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army soldiers. An estimated 1,100 medics were killed in the course of the Vietnam War.
2023: THE HUEY HELICOPTER
The UH-1 Iroquois "Huey" Helicopter was nicknamed the "Huey" after the phonetic sound of its original designation, HU-1.
The UH-1 "Iroquois" helicopter was the workhorse of the Army during the Vietnam War and was relied upon to "do anything a horse could do" and subsequently evolved from a tool for troop and supply transport to include direct combat gun support.
2022: STANDARD-ISSUE HELMET
The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the U.S. military from World War II until 1985 when it was succeeded by the PASGT helmet. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the US military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world.
2021: STANDARD-ISSUE BOOTS
In the early years of American involvement in the Vietnam War, some U.S. Army soldiers were issued the 'M1945 Tropical Combat Boot'. To help prevent American foot injuries from punji stake traps, the 1966 jungle boots used a stainless steel plate inside the boot's sole to protect the wearer from enemy punji stake traps and nails.
2020: DOG TAGS
The dog tags worn by soldiers in the Vietnam War and other wars throughout the years are a recognizable symbol of the American GI. These bits of metal hold the important responsibility of helping to get fallen soldiers home again should the worst happen while on active duty. Soldiers 昀椀ghting in the Vietnam War tied the second tag to one boot to help identify cases of dismemberment.
2019: VIETNAM WAR RIBBON
The Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) is presented to personnel of any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces who performed military service during the Vietnam War and meet speci昀椀c quali昀椀cations laid out by the United States Department of Defense.

. Patrick
By Patrick Novecosky
If Ireland’s patron saint were to peek out from his grave on March 17, he would be dumbfounded by the celebrations that take place around the world in his honor.
It’s a safe bet that St. Patrick never downed a green beer, dressed like a leprechaun, ate corned beef and cabbage, or saw a river dyed green.
When I was 昀椀ve years old and learned about St. Patrick, I decided to visit his grave in Northern Ireland one day. I made good on that promise 50 years later when I traveled to the small town of Downpatrick last fall.
Although he’s one of the world’s bestknown saints, there is a tremendous amount of mystery surrounding the man who reputedly drove out snakes and converted pagan Ireland.
What we do know about him is fascinating.
First of all, Patrick wasn’t even Irish. He
was born at the end of Roman rule in Britain (late 300s) in either England or Scotland. He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. The date of death is traditionally the feast day of Catholic saints.
From Prisoner to Priest
Although Patrick’s father was a Catholic deacon, historians believe that he took on the role for tax incentives. As a result, young Patrick was not raised in a devout Christian home.
When he was 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who attacked his family’s estate. They transported him to Ireland, where he spent six years in captivity — likely in County Antrim or County Mayo.
During his time as a slave, Patrick worked as a shepherd. Lonely and afraid, the young man turned to God for solace, becoming more devout in his Christian faith — and he began to dream of converting the Irish people
to Christianity.
In his autobiography, Confession of Saint Patrick, he writes that a voice— which he believed to be God’s— spoke to him in a dream, telling him to leave Ireland.
The escape was relatively easy, but the journey was excruciating. Patrick walked from County Mayo to the Irish coast, then he hitched a ride back to Britain and walked hundreds of miles to his family’s home. There, Patrick writes that he experienced a second revelation—an angel in a dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick soon began his seminary education, which lasted more than 15 years.
After his priestly ordination, his bishop sent him back to Ireland with a dual mission — to minister to Christians on the island and to begin to convert the Irish. According to tradition dating from the early Middle Ages, Patrick

The author at the grave of St. Patrick at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland
was the 昀椀rst bishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland. He is credited with the rapid spread of Christianity in Ireland and converting a pagan society in the process.
Snakes and Shamrocks
The shamrock — often called the “seamroy” by the Celts — was considered a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the
1680s — 12 centuries after the saint’s death.
Another common St. Patrick story is that he banished snakes from the Emerald Isle. While it’s true that Ireland is a land without snakes, there’s little evidence to credit Patrick for driving them out. The earliest writings about Patrick and snakes are by Jocelyn of Furness, who lived in the late
native Irish beliefs. He used bon昀椀res to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with 昀椀re. He superimposed a sun, a well-known Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross. The result is what we now know as the Celtic cross.
There were few Christians on the island when Patrick arrived. Most Irish practiced a nature-based
years of Christianity, there was no formal canonization process. After becoming a priest and helping to spread Christianity throughout the island, Patrick likely became a saint by popular acclaim.
That acclaim has spread near and far. Although I claim no Irish ancestry, I’ve always felt a strong kinship with St. Patrick and the Irish people. That kinship

SneakerSoiree, Benefiting Girls on the Run Piedmont
By Kathy Butler, Executive Director | Photos by Girls on the Run
irls on the Run
Piedmont inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and con昀椀dent using a fun, experiencebased curriculum that creatively integrates running. At Girls on the Run, we envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. That is why Girls on the Run Piedmont is raising funds for girls in 3rd - 8th grade right here in our community.
2023 marks the 10th year that Girls on the Run has served girls across the Piedmont. During this time, over 1,600 girls have participated in our life-changing program, and we have gifted nearly $100,000 in scholarships to those needing 昀椀nancial assistance to participate in Girls on the Run. We have also distributed over 350 pairs of highquality running shoes. Without support from the community, we would not be able to serve those most in need of our program.
Here is where you can help! The Sneaker Soiree raises valuable funds for our scholarship program. We would like to invite you to be a part of the movement that makes this goal a reality. Event attendees will enjoy dinner, drinks, and dancing. Attendees can also participate in a silent auction, a wine pull, and more!
If you choose to become a sponsor of the Soiree, you will help girls in our community gain competence, con昀椀dence, and the ability to connect with other girls. Participating sponsors will receive recognition on social media leading up to the event, verbal recognition at the event, and their logo displayed throughout the event venue.
Our goal is to raise enough funding through sponsors and the Sneaker Soiree so that no girl is ever turned away from the program due to 昀椀nancial circumstances.
Join us on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 7-10 p.m. at Stevenson Ridge in Fredericksburg as we help girls realize their limitless potential. All sponsorships are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible.
Please visit www.gotrpiedmont.org/sneaker-soiree for tickets or to 昀椀ll out a sponsorship form. With questions, please email me at Kathy.butler@girlsontherun.org.

Kettle Run Spring Sports Ramping Up
n Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring and with that comes spring sports! These sports include track and 昀椀eld, baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, and tennis. The season starts with scrimmages the 昀椀rst week of March. The spring sports season is big at Kettle Run with a history of successful teams. In 2023, all the spring teams had a combined 62-38-3 win record. All teams participated in the district competition, and three teams made it to regional and state competitions.
By Mandy Holmes
Starting strong, Kettle Run’s boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams have dominated for the last several years. In 2023, the girls' team went 11-5, were region runner-ups, and made it to the state quarter昀椀nals. That was their third year in a row making it to the playoffs. Things look bright for the Cougars this season, after only losing three seniors. The boys’ team also played strong in 2023, going 14-4, winning the regional championship, and playing in the state tournament. It was a huge season for the team and it will be interesting to see how they play this year after losing nine key senior players. Track and 昀椀eld also saw success in 2023, with several individuals qualifying for states. The girls’ team were regional runner-ups, placing the highest ever in Kettle Run history. At the state competition, then-senior Hannah Carlson won the
Shot Put event. For the boys’ team, they had individual success although not as a team at regions or states. It will be fun to see how both teams do in 2024! During winter track, several athletes have already quali昀椀ed for states and broken school records, so hopefully, this success will carry over into the spring.
Continuing to make Kettle Run proud, the baseball team won the district championship last year in an underdog battle against Sherando. They had a very successful season with an overall 9-8 record. With the loss of several crucial senior players, it is hard to tell if this team will be able to step up again in 2024.
The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams, along with the softball team, had winning records and competed in district competitions last year but were unable to get the job done. Hopefully, things will work out better this year for these strong teams and they’ll be able to advance further in the playoffs.
Overall, Kettle Run’s spring sports teams are used to success. This should be a competitive season for all the teams, and if all goes well, they’ll be bringing home some more hardware.
Let’s go Cougars!

Supporting Everyday Steps: The Role of Foot Levelers in Enhancing Wellness
Dr. Jennifer Ely
Foot Levelers orthotics are a revolutionary product that can have a profound impact on the health and well-being of your entire body. These custom-made shoe inserts are designed to support the natural alignment of your feet, which in turn can help improve the alignment of your entire body. In this article, we will explore why Foot Levelers orthotics are bene昀椀cial for your whole body and how they can contribute to your overall health and wellness.
can be especially bene昀椀cial for individuals who spend long hours standing or walking, as it can help reduce fatigue and prevent foot-related injuries. By providing cushioning and support to the feet, these orthotics can also help absorb shock and reduce the impact on joints, which can be particularly bene昀椀cial for athletes and individuals with an active lifestyle.
One of the key bene昀椀ts of Foot Levelers orthotics is their ability to provide proper support for your feet. The feet are the foundation of our body, and any misalignment or imbalance in the feet can have a ripple effect on the rest of the body. When the feet are not properly supported, it can lead to issues such as 昀氀at feet, plantar fasciitis, and overpronation, which can cause pain and discomfort in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and even the lower back. By providing customized support to the arches of your feet, Foot Levelers orthotics can help alleviate these issues and promote proper alignment throughout the body.
Another advantage of Foot Levelers orthotics is their ability to distribute pressure evenly across the feet. This
Furthermore, Foot Levelers orthotics can help improve posture and spinal alignment. When the feet are properly supported, it can help align the rest of the body, including the knees, hips, and spine. This can not only improve overall posture but also reduce the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. By promoting proper alignment, these orthotics can help optimize the function of the nervous system, which plays a crucial role in the overall health and well-being of the body.
In addition to their physical bene昀椀ts, Foot Levelers orthotics can also contribute to improved athletic performance. By providing proper support and alignment, these orthotics can help enhance stability, balance, and proprioception, which are essential

for athletes in various sports. Whether you are a professional athlete or simply enjoy participating in recreational activities, Foot Levelers orthotics can help optimize your performance and reduce the risk of injuries.
In conclusion, Foot Levelers orthotics are a remarkable solution for maintaining the health and well-being of your entire body.
