The Grapevine SEAMER & TAME BRIDGE MAGAZINE
No. 140 August 2016 - September 2016

EDITOR’S NOTES Another successful Seamer Produce Show and Children’s sports (despite the relatively poor weather) is over and Summer holidays are here. Hopefully the sun will shine and we will all have a good time. Many of the regular events held in the village hall will stop during August so please check when they end/restart. It is with sadness that I announce the death of Bryan Sykes, a local resident, who was one of the founders of the Grapevine, its original Editor and a regular recent contributor in the Time for a Laugh category (despite his long illness). He will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to Caroline and her family at this time. Another sad event for many in the village is the leaving of the Reverend Daniel. Although only here for a year, he has made a tremendous impact both at the Methodist Church and at Pop In where he was a regular attender. We wish him well in his new post in Milan and note that the demand for cakes and scones will now reduce significantly!! The next edition of Grapevine will cover October and November and any contributions are welcome. Closing date will be September 26th.
ST. MARTIN’S CHURCH Eucharist at 11.15 on August 7th and 21th September 4th and 18th
Revd Paul Hutchinson Note: The last Coffee morning held in April raised £337.50. A big thanks to all that attended and helped make it a success. An even bigger thanks to those that helped!! See the advert on the next page for the next one! POLITE NOTICE The church yard is once again being affected by dog fouling. Could I please ask dog owners using the Church Grounds to ensure that their dogs are kept under observation and any fouling is cleaned up. Thanks in advance for your co-operation. Ann Startin

'POND PARTY' THANKS A massive 'thank you' to those wonderful willing volunteers who arrived at the pond to help on both occasions. We now have bulbs and wild flower seeds planted around the pond, and lillies and marginal plants in the pond. The 'party' part had to be postponed as those who were working in the water needed to freshen up and the weather wasn't exactly in our favour. It has been noticed by most in the village that something undesirable is appearing on the surface of the water. As this edition is being distributed, I am endeavouring to contact the appropriate department within the Environmental Agency whose assistance we may need. to sort out the problem. There is a raffle ongoing to try to raise money for materials to build our Duck families some much improved nesting houses. Tickets can be purchased from the farm shop. Any additional contributions will be very gratefully accepted. Gill Burton. tel: 713985

QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY The party for HM The Queen’s Birthday Celebrations held at Seamer Village Hall, was a good afternoon. Those that attended, although few in numbers, had a great time. Special thanks go to Chanel Jackson (a year 9 pupil) who donated a cake she had especially baked and iced for the event. This was very much appreciated and enjoyed by all. 5
Thanks also to Mark Murphy for organising the event. Dave Campy PRODUCE SHOW A big thank you to everyone involved in Sunday's show, the back stage lasses and lad, the people who entered, (and yes it is definitely too late to enter now!), the Judges and Stewards (there were no serious Stewards Inquiries) and the magnificent response to our request for cakes, It is always like the miracle of the loaves and fishes. SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH IN REMEMBRANCE OF A NEIGHBOUR We were very sad to hear of the death of Bryan Sykes on Sunday July 17th. Bryan and Caroline’s home from 1990, when they moved into the village, is, as you will know, next door to the Methodist Church. The Church could not have wished for better neighbours. On 27th July there was a very fitting service of Celebration for the life of Bryan with over £300 raised for the RNLI. Bryan took an interest in all aspects of the village of Seamer and everyone will miss that support. Often that support was undertaken confidentially, 8
without public acknowledgement - but that was Bryan’s way. We will also all miss his regular contributions to this magazine, especially his Time for a Laugh. Thank you Bryan for all that you have contributed to the life of the village. Our thoughts and prayers are with Caroline, family and close friends. GOODBYE TO DANIEL On 24th July we said goodbye to Rev Daniel Pratt Morris-Chapman. Daniel was only in the UK for approximately one year after being a minister in The Cameroon and before going to work in Italy. Daniel has made a great impression on all who have met him. He may only have been our minister for one year but his dedication and commitment and very welcoming personality will be greatly missed. We wish him and his family all the very best as they take up their new roles, and may God bless him in all that he does. Daniel - I understand that one of our members has made you an honorary Yorkshireman - so please come back sometime in the future! Many, many thanks for the time you have been with us. WELCOME LISA From the 1st September, Rev Lisa Quarmby (telephone 01642 724968) will take responsibility for Seamer Methodist Church. Lisa is already known to us in that she has been living and ministering in Stokesley. In July the family moved to Great Ayton and as part of that move, and the pending appointment of a new Minister (Reverand Andrew Robinson) in Stokesley, some changes in ministerial responsibility were required. We warmly welcome Lisa to our community in her new role. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I came across these words by John McEnroe ‘It is far better to go out, try your best at something and fail, than it is to have not tried at all.’ TIME FOR A SMILE (In memory of Bryan) If an accountant’s wife can’t get to sleep, what does she say? ‘Tell me about your work, dear.’ Ron Kirk
TIME FOR A LAUGH - HOLY HUMOUR A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, 'I know what Bible means!' His father smiled and replied, 'What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means? The son replied, 'I do know!' 'Okay,' said his father. 'What does the Bible mean?' 'That's easy, Daddy...' the young boy replied excitedly,' It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth. ———————————————————————————————-
There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. ' Is there anything breakable in here?' asked the postal clerk. 'Only the Ten Commandments.' answered the lady. ————————————————————————————————
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: 'I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.' When he returned, he found a ticket from a Traffic warden along with this note. ‘'I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.' ————————————————————————————————
While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign:Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust. 10
A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, 'Boys and girls, what do we know about God?' A hand shot up in the air. 'He is an artist!' said the youngest boy. Really? How do you know?' the teacher asked. 'You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven… —————————————————————————————————————
A minister waited in line to have his car filled with fuel just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many waiting. Finally, the attendant motioned him towards vacant pump. 'Reverend,' said the young man, ‘I’m so sorry about the delay. It seems like everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.' The minister chuckled, 'I know what you mean. It's the same in my business.' ———————————————————————————————————————-
People want the front of the bus, the back of the church, and the centre of attention .
————————————————————————————————————————
The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting to for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. 'Here's a copy of the service,' he said impatiently. 'But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances.' During the service, the minister paused and said, 'Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need £4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge £100 or more, please stand up.' At that moment, the substitute organist played ‘The National Anthem.' And that is how the substitute became the regular organist! Submitted by the late Bryan Sykes. FLOWER TUBS It has been noticed by several of the people looking after these that some of the plants are disappearing. Please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and make note of it. Then contact Dave Campy in his role of Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for the village. DaveCampy 710320 11
LABMAN BUSINESS AWARD Following an extremely successful 3 months, in which Labman has won several prestigious awards, confirmed their biggest order to date, and seen a new building expansion take shape, I’m delighted to say that they have been awarded the Innovations Award in the Hambleton Business Awards. Gathering local businesses from across the local region, the nominees met for a great evening at Northallerton Town Hall, and Labman’s Andrew Whitwell and Rob Hodgson were there to collect the Award. On behalf of the residents of Seamer, I would like to add our congratulations to them for raising the profile of Seamer in the business world. Dave Campy (Grapevine Editor and neighbour of Labman)
