EDITOR’S NOTES I hope you have all had as nice a Christmas and New Year as me. After a successful holiday/visit to Rev Daniel in Milan, delivering over 120 shoe boxes and £610 cash for him and his new Church to use to help the refugees, migrants and homeless there, we had the news that our daughter is pregnant with our first Grandchild. Then we enjoyed many of the Christmas Events in the Village Hall and Churches and also the Burns Night, all of which were excellently organised and enjoyable! The next two months are quieter for us and the Community but there is still lots of useful information in this edition. Our next edition will cover April and May and any contributions should be with me by March 25th. Thanks.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS SEAMER CHORAL SOCIETY Meeting 1st Friday of every month 7.00pm – 8.30pm Starts 3rd February I am delighted to announce that Seamer Choral Society is happening after Ron Kirk kindly agreed to play the keyboard and boss us around a little like Gareth does! :) Expect things to be a tad ad lib, we’ll have a bash at being a choir (arranging voices and conducting) though overall this is more about a feel good evening of singing. Song choices are our own, for the 1st week Ron may have some traditional music available and I’ll see what gems I can download for free off the internet (music and lyrics). From there we can all suggest our personal favourites as/if things take off. Please be at the Village Hall for 7pm with the option to BYO drinks and stay for a natter afterwards. Costs will be kept to a minimum: musician plus any running costs i.e. photocopying, so depending on numbers please work on £2-ish per session. Please spread the word to friends and family, everyone welcome. I hope to see you there. Jo Batey

JUMBLE SALE – April 29th 2pm This is my usual appeal, please keep all your unwanted clothes, furniture, bric-a-brac, toys and anything the spring clean de-clutter throws up for our jumble sale. £532 was generated for Hall Funds last year. As always I welcome anything which may make more on Ebay. There have been some really unusual and very generous donations over the years which, in 2015, led to a record £678. Donations can be left in the Hall up to a fortnight before the event. If anyone needs me to open up or help lift please get in touch. Thank you as always. Jo Batey 01642 713143 6
COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH UPDATE The forms have been completed and returned. Shortly, a meeting and site visit with a member of the Police Volunteer team will take place to identify the areas where the checks can be done safely. When that is complete then an initial training session will be held for those who have expressed an interest in helping. Phil Taylor
SEAMER VILLAGE POND WINNERS FROM THE XMAS RAFFLE 1st prize Xmas Cake - Ethel Alton 2nd prize Jack Frost - Jo Batey 3rd prize Farm Shop Voucher - Ameera (please call me on 713985) 4th prize finger baskets - Jo Batey EXECUTIVE NESTING HOUSE Our first ‘Executive Nesting House’ is in the process of being built and will be placed on the pond when the water might not be so cold! Our last fund raising for the pond following The Produce Show last year has just amounted to enough for the materials for this first house. If any of you have any prizes you may be able to offer towards our next fund-raising for possibly another two houses, they would be gratefully accepted. Once again a massive ‘Thank You’ to those who are interested and come forward to help in various ways, to make ‘Seamer Village Pond’ a more pleasant feature to have within our environment. SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH MANY, MANY THANKS Since the last Grapevine, there have been a number of very successful and enjoyable events connected to the Methodist Church and thanks are due to those involved. These have included:
The Village Christmas Tree including the formal switching on of the lights followed by the short Nativity service in the church. Thanks to the Parish Council (especially Walter Pattison MBE for his donation of the tree) and to the ‘construction’ team. Also thanks to all who attended and shared in the Nativity. 7
Carol singing. The total donations amounted to £635.50. Once again the weather was very kind. Thanks to the singers and also to the welcoming reception and gifts received throughout the village. Thanks to those providing refreshments at the end of both evenings singing in Seamer, especially Pauline and Angela Forrest.
These have become part of the Christmas traditions for the village and it is good to share in such community activities. 1
NEW YEAR Despite that fact that it is only one month into a new year it’s amazing how quickly things ‘get back to normal’. 2017, however, will not be without its challenges. Each year we all step out into the uncertainty of what the year may bring. For some the year may bring significant celebrations. For some there may be sadness. Nothing ever stands still and we have to face the good, bad and indifferent changes that confront us. Those who have faith, hold fast to the promise the no matter what arises in life, God will be with us through it all. As well as the changes at a personal level, 2017 will be a significant year on the national and international scene- two examples: 1
Brexit – as the year progresses we will be bombarded by media coverage – or should I say – speculation. Speaking personally ,too many important negotiations are conducted in the public gaze. Yes we need to know what is happening but much media involvement involves the taking of stances that it is difficult to negotiate from. Trump – now he has been installed as President of USA we will have to see how much of his, on occasions extreme, rhetoric is turned into action. I hope, however, that 2017 will a good year for you. TIME FOR A SMILE ‘Never put off today what you can do tomorrow because if you like it you can do it again tomorrow.’ (Russ Abbot) THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference’. OIL CLUB We have quite a few new members making January’s order over 12,000 litres. If we keep progressing hopefully, we will soon be able to order a full tanker load for Seamer area. If anyone is unlucky enough to have an oil tank leak the club can put you in touch with a company who offer an emergency call out service. Normally they will pump the oil out from above the leak. If the leak is low or severe they will pump out all the oil into an emergency container and re –connect to your boiler leaving you with heating. The rest is up to you. Next order 1st week in March. For any of the above services contact: David Ward 01642710333 or Gordon Reed 01642711495
NORTH YORKSHIRE COMMUNITY POLICE WARNINGS MIGRANT HELPLINE SCAM Fraudsters are sending out a high number of phishing emails to personal and business email addresses purporting to be from 'Migrant Helpline'. The address of most of the emails is noreply@yeshivadonations.com. Although Migrant Helpline is a genuine charity, fraudsters are using it to trick members of the public into becoming victims of this fraud. It should be noted that this fraud is in no way related to the real charity. The subject line currently is 'Thank you for choosing to donate to Migrant helpline'. Once the link within the email is clicked, a well known Trojan (Ramnit) is downloaded onto the victim's device. This malware is equipped to target and steal personal and corporate banking details. 9
PROPERTY FINANCE FRAUD ALERT There is an increase in organised criminal groups currently targeting empty properties in the UK to apply for loans, duping mortgage providers and causing further distress to members of the public. Criminal networks are identifying empty properties using names on published obituaries and carrying out further research on the Land Registry. Once a suitable property is discovered the group then organise for fake documentation to be produced, and register on the electoral role and with utility companies. They meticulously work through the legal hurdles until the finances are released by the unsuspecting organisation. The rights to the property actually belong to a completely innocent party who have no idea the crime has taken place until a much later point. There is an increased risk of fraud when: a property is empty or has been bought-to-let the owner is spending time abroad or is absent the owner is infirm or in a nursing or care home a relationship breaks down between the property owners/dwellers a property has no mortgage
Owners who are concerned their property might be subject to a fraudulent sale or mortgage can quickly alert the Land Registry to speak to specially trained staff. for practical guidance about what to do next by calling the Property Fraud Line on 0300 006 7030. AMAZON SCAM EMAIL ALERT Several reports from victims who have been sent convincing looking emails claiming to be from Amazon have been received. The spoofed emails from “service@amazon.co.uk” claim recipients have made an order online and mimic an automatic customer email notification. The emails cleverly state that if recipients haven't authorised the transaction they can click on the help centre link to receive a full refund. The link leads to an authentic-looking website, which asks victims to confirm their name, address and bank card information. Amazon says that suspicious e-mails will often contain: Links to websites that look like Amazon.co.uk, but aren't Attachments or prompts to install software on your computer. Typos or grammatical errors. Forged (or spoofed) e-mail addresses to make it look like the e-mail is coming from Amazon.co.uk. 10
Note, Amazon will never ask for personal information by email. If you have been a victim of any of the above frauds please report the matter to Action Fraud, National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre 0300 1232040 or http://www.actionfraud.police.uk FRIENDS AGAINST SCAMS Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire is supporting the Friends Against Scams campaign and appealing for carers, volunteers, charities and agencies who work with elderly and vulnerable members of the community to get involved. Results from the recent national crime survey identified that fraud is the most commonly experienced crime in the UK with 3.6 million fraud offences being recorded last year. Crime has changed, fraud is now the most commonly experienced offence. Every year scams cause between £5bn and £10bn worth of detriment to UK consumers. For more information, visit: www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk LOST PASSPORTS The UK passport is a valuable document, and if a lost passport ends up in the hands of a criminal, they may attempt to use it in a number of illegal activities, including money laundering, identity theft and gaining wrongful entry through border checks. If you do find a passport or have one handed in as an item of lost property, please post it immediately, with a short note explaining where you found it, to: FREEPOST HM PASSPORT OFFICE. Passports remain the property of the Crown at all times and should not be kept as items of lost property or destroyed. Please do not therefore attempt to return a found UK passport to its holder. When a passport is reported as lost or stolen, it is cancelled and is no longer a valid travel document. Cancelling the passport also helps to prevent it being used for fraudulent purposes while not in the possession of the passport holder. Please also advise anyone who comes to you to say they have lost their passport, that they should report it immediately at http://www.gov.uk/report-a-lost-or-stolen-passport.
FORGET ME NOT CAFE A new memory café is being set up to offer friendship and support to those in our community who have concerns about their memory or the memory of a loved one or friend. The "Forget Me Not Café" will run 11
monthly on Tuesdays at Stokesley Methodist Church and is run by trained volunteers supported by health professionals. We aim to provide an opportunity for participants to meet regularly with others who have memory problems and their carers, and give an opportunity to exchange experiences and to give and receive emotional support. This free cafĂŠ is open to everyone and will run from 2pm to 3.30pm on Tuesday 28th February and 28th March. We offer light conversation, music, games and other activities - please feel free to make suggestions! There is ample free parking directly outside the church on Stokesley High Street, on a 2 hour disc, and there is a wheelchair ramp for easy access to the building. The church has recently been refurbished and has a disabled toilet in the foyer which is easy to access. Please come along and support this new venture and let others know there is a friendly face and a listening ear on your doorstep. Katherine Atha, CafĂŠ Co- ordinator

More Tommy Cooper style jokes. The old one are the best! Two blondes walk into a building. You'd think at least one of them would have seen it! Phone answering machine message - 'If you want to buy marijuana, press the hash key!' A guy walks into the psychiatrist wearing only Clingfilm for shorts. The shrink says, 'Well, I can clearly see you're nuts.' I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day - but I couldn't find any. My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currant pulled him in. A man came round in hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, 'Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs!' The doctor replied, 'I know you can't, I've cut your arms off'. I went to a seafood disco last week and pulled a muscle. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it. Our ice cream man was found lying on the floor of his van covered with hundreds and thousands. Police say that he topped himself. A man goes to the doctor with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says 'I'll give you some cream to put on it.' 'Doc I can't stop singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home' 'That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome. ' 'Is it common?' 'It's not unusual.' A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. 'My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?' ‘Well,' said the vet, 'let's have a look at him' So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, 'I'm going to have to put him down.' 'What? Because he's cross-eyed?' 'No, because he's really heavy' 13

So I was getting into my car and this bloke says to me 'Can you give me a lift?' I said 'Sure, you look great, the world's your oyster, go for it.' 14. Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my Mum or my Dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it's Colin. 15. You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. It said, 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice. 16. A man walked into the doctor's, 'I've hurt my arm in several places.' The doctor said, 'Well don't go there anymore.' Submitted by David Ward.
REVEREND DANIEL UPDATE Daniel has written a new book with his letters and some sermons whilst in Italy. It is available from Christine and David Campy or any member of the Methodist Church. Please ask them and they will get you a copy. The cost is £5 and profits are for The Whitmore Trust for theological Training in Cameroon. Our visit to Milan in late November/December was very successful with the journey there and back being completed without any problems. We even had time to do sight-seeing along the route, though the weather was cold but dry! Night halts next to rivers, lakes and winter markets all helped to make the journey enjoyable (but tiring!). We delivered lots of shoe boxes for the migrants which were given out on Christmas day by Daniel and church volunteers - see video at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7UcCmTlT4k&sns=em - and £610 cash for the Church’s work with them. We found Daniel and Grace busy learning Italian and getting use to life in a foreign country. The two boys (Kwami and John) are very settled in School and Anna is just about walking and talking. We spent much of our time in Milan supporting Daniel and Grace by playing with the children (giving Daniel 14
and Grace time to get on with their work and learning Italian) and generally being ‘adopted parents/grandparents’ - spoiling them! We went out on the Sunday morning with the church’s volunteers, giving out breakfasts to some of the many homeless on the streets (a drop in the ocean in real terms but at least it was something)- see video at
www.bftime.tumblr.com The visit was emotional, challenging and tiring but very worthwhile and enjoyable. We gave them the good wishes of many of Seamer’s residents (especially those at Pop-In and the Methodist Church) and they in turn remember Seamer with fondness and pass on their blessings. We wish them well for their future in Italy Christine and David Campy
