EDITOR’S NOTES What an end to July for wet weather. Still the gardens and the pond look better for the rain (unless like me you have overfertilized parts of your lawn by spilling the bag!!). The next month has little going on as regards the village due to the holidays but many activities recommence in September. Read on for further information. I hope you all have a nice summer break and the submission date for the next edition is by 27th September. Thanks Dave Campy

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH UPDATE I reported the following figures to the Parish Council; There have been 16 watches up to, but not including Tuesday 18 th July, since the meeting in May. 1778 cars have been logged of which 205 were exceeding the limit. This is almost 12% together with a new high of 63mph. I await the official figures from the Police coordinator. Thanks for all your support. P. Taylor (Coordinator) [Editor. A Police Speed bike has been deployed several times within the 6

village over the past month, and a camera van in Tame Bridge, indicating that the police are taking a serious view of speeding within the area. North Yorkshire Police are also embarking on a Project to increase the number and use of Community Speed Watches in North Yorkshire.]

READVERT OF JOB VACANCY After many years service as illustrator for the covers of Grapevine, Margaret Smith would like to take a “well deserved break” and give others the opportunity to show their artistic skills and provide future covers. These can be Seamer/Tame Bridge views, seasonal illustrations, adverts for local events in the months the edition covers etc. Now we have some colour printing they could even be photographs! They could be a one off contribution or responsibility for a series of illustrations. Please contact me, if you are interested in this Vacancy. I would again like to thank Margaret for all the wonderful work she has done for Grapevine and the village in general and wish her a great, well deserved break! SEAMER VILLAGE POND What a pleasure to see the wildlife on the village pond beginning to mature, both animal and plant. The presence this year of breeding ducks and their ducklings and the water lilies in bloom has been a real pleasure to us who overlook the pond and I hope to others. Long may it continue. Thanks to Gill Burton and her helpers! Editor

SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH THOUGHTS OF SUMMER It’s that time of year when, for many people, their thoughts are about holidays and how to spend the summer days. This is probably truest for children. The long school term is passed and there are probably up to six weeks to fill with highly pleasurable activities. Even as adults we can remember those times. It’s strange how the mind remembers the sunny days and appears to forget about the wet, rainy days. For many this is a time for relaxation and refreshment - A time for new 7

experiences - A time to catch up with family members. Many regular activities cease during the month of August, so it can also be a period of reflection. This is, however, also a time to look forward and plan for the future. September will come too soon. Schools re open - Activities recommence. The future beckons. REPAIRS TO THE BUILDING Following a recent survey it has been established that some repairs are required to the fabric of the building. Hopefully in the very near future you may observe repairs being carried out. The building was constructed in 1931 so it is inevitable that repairs and replacements are required. It will be good to see the Church continue to serve the community in the coming years. We believe that carrying out this work is our way of acknowledging that the future beckons and that the building will continue to be a welcoming place to meet and worship. TIMES OF WORSHIP 6th August @ 10.30am led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 13th August @ 10.30 am All Age Worship led by Vanessa Johnson 20th August @ 10.30 am led by Ken Hudson 27th August @ 10.30 am led by Christine Campy 3rd September @ 10.30 am led by Rev Graham Peacock 10th September @ 10.30 am All Age Worship led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 17th September @ 10.30 am led by Elaine Wilson @ 2.30 pm at Stokesley Led by Rev Ruth Gee Chair of the Darlington District: Remembering the Reformation 24th September @ 10.30 am Harvest Festival led by Peter Jackson. This is a golden opportunity for a rural community to celebrate. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH If you have a chest full of fine clothing, and leave it for a long time, the clothing will fade and spoil. It is the same with the good intensions in our mind. If we do not put those good thoughts into action, they too will fade and spoil. (Abbot Pastor – a Desert Father) 8

INFORMATION REQUESTED - BAINBRIDGE HISTORY Hi, I am researching my Bainbridge roots, who originated from Seamer, and was wondering if there is anyone researching this family who still live in Seamer or may receive a copy of Grapevine. William Bainbridge married Mary Bulmore (?) on 18/12/1792 in Seamer - they had at least 11 children born between 1793 & 1812 and most are recorded as born in Seamer, but at least three in Newby. Any further information/assistance re Mary Bulmore would also be appreciated. Thank you. Judith Harty (Mrs)

NORTH YORSHIRE COMMUNITY INFORMATION North Yorkshire Police have been made aware of members of the public receiving phone calls from a male, speaking in a foreign accent, claiming to be from BT advising them that their computer has alerted them to problems in relation to their Broadband/Router. He claims that it is being heavily infected with a virus and as such BT need to send an engineer to their property the next day. But beforehand they require the customer to logon to their computer to facilitate a fault report for the engineer. If the customer refuses to go along with their scam, the male becomes extremely abusive. If you have been victim to such a phone call please contact Action Fraud on 0300 1232040. North Yorkshire Trading Standards have noticed an increase in reports from residents being contacted by telephone by someone claiming to be from Microsoft, BT, Talk-Talk or similar stating they have identified a problem with the router or that the persons email has been 'hacked'. They will then trick the recipient into downloading software that allows the caller to remotely access the computer. This may result in the caller claiming they can offer a service to rid the computer of viruses or locking the computer and demanding a fee to unlock. This scam has been around for a while now but we are still seeing residents falling victim. If you get a similar call, hang up and if in doubt contact your internet service provider.

TIME FOR A LAUGH Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard when he lives in the jungle without a razor? Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are flat? Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they know there is not enough money in your account? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Why do people believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say that paint is wet? Whose idea was it to put an 'S' in the word 'lisp'?

What is the speed of darkness? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies actually wake up every two hours? If the temperature is zero outside today and it's going to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold will it be? Do married people live longer than single ones or does it only seem longer? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why do people pay to go up very tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? Did you ever stop and wonder....... Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, 'I think I'll squeeze these pink dangly things there, and drink whatever comes out?' Who was the first person to say, 'See that chicken there... I'm going to eat the next thing that comes out of its bum.' Why do toasters always have a setting so high that it would burn the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat? Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer? Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but don't point to their bum when they ask where the bathroom is? Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs ! If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil from vegetables, then what is baby oil made from? Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Spaghetti? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when on a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? Does pushing the lift button more than once make it arrive faster? Are you wondering why you are bothering to read this!!! Submitted by David Ward (modified by editor) 11
