The Grapevine SEAMER & TAME BRIDGE MAGAZINE
No. 149 February – March 2018

EDITOR’S NOTES Whilst being ill with Flu for most of January, I have been thinking about the future for Grapevine. It has a solid financial basis, with funding from the windfarm, the printing is now within my control and has the advantage (I hope you agree) of colour and better printing of photographs; but articles for publication and Grapevine distributors (see later advert) are both in short supply with several of the current distributors wishing to have a break. I hope to carry out a review of who gets copies of the Grapevine and which areas are covered by which distributor by the April edition. So please, if you have any event or information you would like other Grapevine readers to know about please get in touch with me (addresses in Grapevine Contacts at the end of each edition). The date for submission of articles is always given in Editors Notes at the beginning of each magazine Also, if you can help with the Distribution of Grapevine (it should take no longer than 1 hour at the end of alternative months i.e. March, May, July etc. and simply involves posting them through letter boxes), please contact me (addresses in Grapevine Contacts at the end of each edition). Thank you. The date for submission of articles for the April/May edition is Monday March 26th . Dave Campy

For those members who joined last February/March, this means that you are due to join again. If you wish to do so, please get in touch with me on 01642 710294 or by e-mail on chris_cooper1@hotmail.com To help me to remind you when your renewal fees are due, could you please let me have your email address or telephone number. This is easier than having to come and see you. If you are new to the area and would like to become a member, you can do so at anytime. It costs £1 per month/£12 for the year, for which you are allocated a number. Each month, half the monthly money is given out as prize money and the other half goes to the village hall funds. SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH THANK YOUS Since the last Grapevine it is only right to offer thanks to all who helped in making the festive season a joyful one:
The Parish Council, especially Water Pattison MBE, for the Village Christmas Tree Those who erected and “dressed” it Those who attended the switching on of the Tree lights and Nativity Service Those attending and sharing in the Carol Service The carol singers and those providing refreshments at the end of the evenings, The generosity of the community – the total received from Carol Singing was £567, (plus some sweets, mince pies etc.!).
All in all, a very big THANK YOU. 6
I trust that whatever you did over the festive season was very enjoyable and that the joy of Christmas – a baby born as the Son of God - brings joy and hope in 2018. TIMES OF WORSHIP 04/02/18 @ 10.30 am led by Katherine Atha 11/02/18 @ 10.30 am All Age Worship led by Lesley Hopwood 18/02/18 @ 10.30 am led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 25/02/18 @ 10.30 am Led by David Sills 04/03/18 @ 10.30 am tbc 11/03/18@ 10.30 am All Age Worship for Mothering Sunday 18/03/18 @ 10.30 am tbc 25/03/18 @ 10.30 am tbc Everyone is very welcome to join at any time and any act of worship. At the close of all services coffee, tea and biscuits are served. This is a good opportunity to catch up with community issues or at the very least have a good chat! We would be most pleased to welcome you. CHURCH REPAIRS We have recently had some protective work done to ensure that the building is waterproof; thanks to the craftsman involved. The decorating is still to be done, once the walls have thoroughly dried. We are also considering replacing the entrance door since the existing one is almost at the end of its life. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH This is the first issue in 2018, so I was looking for something appropriate to meet the challenges of a new year. I came across the following quote that I hope you may find useful: ‘If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.’(Rabbi Harold Koshner) TIME FOR A SMILE First neighbour – ‘Can I borrow your lawnmower?’ Second neighbour – ‘No. sorry she’s out!’ Ron Kirk 7
VISIT OF RISHI SUNAK MP TO SEAMER
Friday 2nd March 7 – 9pm, Seamer Village Hall Mr Sunak will be taking the opportunity to speak to and meet with residents of Seamer and Tame Bridge on Friday March 2nd. He will give a brief talk on the workings of Parliament, his work for the residents of Hambleton and hopefully update us on the issues currently before ‘The House!’ This will be followed by a question and answer session and finally a chance to speak to Mr Sunak more informally whilst refreshments are served. In the interest of comfort, safety and for catering purposes please will you advise us of your attendance. In order to make efficient use of the time available and if you would like to ask Rishi a question, please will you submit it by the 25th February (details below). Not only will this avoid repetition but it gives Rishi a chance to research answers where necessary! We hope that residents will take the opportunity to come and meet our MP. To register your attendance and to submit a question please contact either Janet Bainbridge at the Pop In (Monday mornings) or the garage, or the Parish Clerk on scapa20@hotmail.com Phil Taylor
TIME FOR A LAUGH
The grim reaper came for me last night and I beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death. A mate of mine recently admitted to being addicted to brake fluid. When I quizzed him on it. he reckoned he could stop any time! I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin. 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70!!! Blow that, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not Happy. 8
I was driving this morning when I saw an AA van parked up. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself that guy's heading for a breakdown. My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning. Can you believe that, 2:30am. Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes. Paddy says "Mick, I'm thinking of buying a Labrador . “Blow that” says Mick “have you seen how many of their owners go blind?” I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor - she only had £1.20 in her purse. My girlfriend thinks that I'm a stalker. Well, she's not exactly my girlfriend yet. I woke up last night to find the ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing at the foot of my bed. At first I was afraid.......then I was petrified. Wife says to her husband “you're always pushing me around and talking behind my back”. He says “What do you expect? You're in a wheelchair.” I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you reincarnate but must come back as a different creature. She said I would like to come back as a cow. I said you're obviously not listening. The wife has been missing a week now. Police said to prepare for the worst. So I have been to the charity shop to get all her clothes back The wife was counting all the 1p's and 2p's out on the kitchen table when she suddenly got very angry and started shouting and crying for no reason. I thought to myself, "She's going through the change." When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkers saying that they wouldn’t feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean, it's not as if she'd have to reverse it. Just got back from my mate's funeral. He died after being hit on the head with a tennis ball. It was a lovely service.
Bought some 'rocket salad' yesterday but it went off before I could eat it! Local Police hunting the 'knitting needle nutter’, who has stabbed six people in the bottom in the last 48 hours, believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern. A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you, today's the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked." Submitted by David Ward 9
OIL CLUB We will be ordering again sometime during February/March. However if anyone is desperately short we will always strive to get the best price even for a single delivery. Also don't forget if you have a problem with your oil tank, we can put you in touch with a company who will hopefully resolve it, even in an emergency. Gordon Reed (01642 711495) and David Ward (01642710333)
MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM Come along and meet your local Neighbourhood Policing Team at The Globe in Stokesley on Saturday 10th February, 10-12pm or Tuesday 13th February 2-4pm. Officers are holding a drop in session to offer help and advice to members of our community including fraud awareness, internet safety and crime prevention!! Also, are you planning a community event this year or do you attend a community group? If so, would you like a member of the Neighbourhood Policing Team from Stokesley to come and give you a talk? Let us know and we will make arrangements to visit the Event or Group!
GRAPEVINE DISTRIBUTORS WANTED Do you enjoy walking? Do you have up to an hour (typically more like 20 minutes) spare at the end of every alternate month (January, March, May, July, September and November) to help distribute Grapevines? 10
It simply involves posting copies of the Grapevine, delivered to you, through the letter boxes of local residents. It may involve a short journey to reach the initial houses allocated but again should normally be manageable by walking. As an example, at present, Tame Bridge is covered by two distributors one takes about 15 minutes (17 houses) and the other (approximately 50 houses) about 40 minutes (including travel to Tame Bridge by car from Seamer). As there are around 260 Grapevines to deliver, the more distributors there are the time each distributor will spend will become less. If you can help then please contact me on 01642 710320 (leave message and I will get back to you) or by email at david.campy123@btinternet.com.
LABMAN UPDATE 2017 marked our 25th anniversary as a Limited Company, and what a year we’ve had to celebrate this amazing milestone. From the visit of HRH Princess Anne, who opened the new extension to our HQ, to the shenanigans of LABFIESTA, our annual summer party, and the securing of some of our largest orders to date, 2017 has been a fun and unprecedented year. We appreciate all your business, your support and your friendship during Labman’s extraordinary 2017 and throughout the past 25 years. For all the success, however, it has not been a year without loss. In late October, we received the devastating news that we had lost our friend and colleague, Jordan Bowes, in a tragic car accident. At 19 years old, he was an apprentice with us and his infectious smile and warm personality are sorely missed at Labman. 2018 Building #2 The paint is hardly dry on the new extension at Labman, but plans are already well underway for a brand-new £2.5M building at our North Yorkshire HQ. With demand for automation due to triple in the next 10 years, and as Labman continues to become one of the go-to companies to deliver this technology, our current factory floor has already reached its capacity. The new building will include a dedicated laboratory for testing, more meeting rooms, communal design areas, a VR Walkthrough zone, and of course a lot more room to build future Labman systems. This exciting new project is due for completion in 2020. More Robots, More People Robots can’t build themselves (yet). At the end of 2016, our team had reached 55 people, and a year later, we’ve almost doubled that number again. We’ve spruced and ramped up our online recruitment process in 2017, and have had an 11
amazing few months attending many of the UK's top University recruitment fairs. It doesn’t stop there though, and our recruitment goals for 2018 are more ambitious than ever. If you are looking for an engineering or software development role, or know someone that is, please visit our Jobs page now to apply. Software Gets an Upgrade Every Labman system comes with bespoke software, lovingly hand-coded by our in-house software team. In line with the expansion of the company, we’re delighted to announce that in 2018 Labman will be creating a dedicated software division focused on creating software-only products, as well as continuing to develop software for our systems. Many of these software packages will unify and simplify many of the laboratory processes our customers operate daily, and will help to consolidate and validate the data produced by our automated systems - we’re pretty excited to get started. For more details of all the above, please see our website at https://www.labmanautomation.com
