The Grapevine SEAMER & TAME BRIDGE MAGAZINE
No. 150 April - May 2018
1
EDITOR’S NOTES There is a bit of a theme to this edition - Volunteering. First, Thank yous. I received three offers of help from new Grapevine Distributors and these matched, perfectly, the areas I needed help for. Thank you Anne, Linda and Maureen. This means that Brian Thompson who distributed Grapevine to the North Part of Seamer for a large number of years can now retire!! Thank you Brian!! Elsewhere in this magazine volunteers are required to maintain a reasonable presence at Community Speed watch The Hutton Rudby Hub’s Café and other facilities. I personally volunteer for both of these and can say both give me pleasure and reward (not financial!!) and a sense of worth that I am helping my local community. Please read these articles and try to respond even if you are already busy. Their time requirements will be as little or as much as you can offer. There is a section in The Seamer Methodist Church article about volunteering which is well worth reading (humorous but true!). This may encourage you!! Sorry not much colour in this edition, my printer does not want to print red and yellow!! Dave Campy

SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH EASTER DAY
There is little doubt that Easter Day is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar. It is a day of real celebration. It is as a result of the death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday followed by his resurrection on Easter Sunday that the early followers of what was described as ‘the new way’ began to realise just how significant those events were. It was the faith of the early followers of Jesus that was the beginning of a movement that has had influence on the world ever since. It is in their tradition that, by our faith in the resurrected Jesus, we seek to bring hope, joy and peace to our generation. 6
It has been out tradition on Easter Sunday to hold our act of worship at 9 am. Everyone is very welcome to come and join the celebration. TIMES OF WORSHIP 1st April @ 9 am Easter day worship led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 8thApril @ 10.30 am led by Ron Kirk 15thApril @ 10.30 am All Age Worship led by David Sills 22ndApril @ 10.30 am led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 29thApril @ 10.30 am led by Vanessa Johnson 6th May @ 10.30 am led by Robert Johnson 13th May @ 10.30 am All Age Worship led by Rev Lisa Quarmby 20th May @ 10.30 am led by Rev Richard Bradshaw 27th May @ 10.30 am led by Rev Lisa Quarmby VOLUNTEERS Most organisations that I know of struggle to find volunteers. I recently reread the following:‘This is the story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.’ (I wonder how many organisations you know are looking for volunteers!) TIME FOR A SMILE A young man went to the job centre and said, ‘I want a job that starts at the top’. ‘I’ve got just the thing’, said the clerk. ‘Grave digging’. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH For the signs of new life that comes with Spring, For Easter cards and Easter eggs, For resurrection and hope, For forgiveness and the renewed life it brings We give thanks Happy Easter Ron Kirk 7
HUTTON RUDBY HUB NEEDS YOU! Hutton Rudby Chapel Community Hub is a warm, caring space in the heart of Hutton Rudby village. It is a community amenity for young families, elderly people, and all those in between, to meet and socialise. Its many facilities and activities are open to all. The servery has locally sourced coffees, teas, hot chocolate and cold drinks. The cakes on offer, from our home bakers, are the best for miles around. Our food hygiene rating is the top rating (5). Although our standards are extremely high, the prices are by far the lowest in the area. This Hub is definitely worth a visit for a relaxing drink and snack, and to find out just how much goes on there. Our volunteers are an extremely friendly bunch. 3 or 4 people cover each shift, some working weekly, fortnightly, monthly or just when needed. It is great fun being a volunteer. More volunteers are needed. If you can spare some time regularly or ad hoc, pop-in and chat to our volunteers or ring Ally, our Hub Manager, on 01642 700644. Why not bring a friend with you and do a shift together? Full training is given. Opening times are Mondays 1 - 4 pm Tuesdays Wednesdays , Thursdays and Fridays 9.30 - 12.30 Wednesdays also open 2-5 pm with a Children’s Club from 3.15 to 4.30pm Saturdays 10am - 4pm COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH The monitoring and recording of excess speed through the village continues and now the longer (and hopefully warmer) days are with us we would like to expand the number of watches we do. To enable this we would like more volunteers. The watches are 45 mins to 1 hour long, at times to suit your availability. They comprise of the measuring of vehicle speed (using a speed gun - simple training given) and the recording of any speeding vehicle's make, model, colour and registration number. Teams of 4 are used and rotation of job role is undertaken as required and members support one another in their role. As well as supporting your community it is a good chance to meet and chat to other village members. Please contact Phil Taylor at scapa20@hotmail.com or Dave Campy on 01642 710320 8
VISIT OF RISHI SUNAK MP TO SEAMER Sorry this had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. We hope to be able to rearrange this at a future date.
Phil Taylor NORTH YORKSHIRE COMMUNITY MESSAGING IMPROVEMENTS TO POLICE CONTROL ROOM You may be aware that I have recently approved an investment of more than £3 million into North Yorkshire Police’s Force Control Room over the next two years. The investment is designed to solve the service issues that have arisen, particularly with the 101 number as a consequence of staffing shortfalls and an increase in the numbers of calls made by the public. The investment comes on top of a range of measures that have already been taken, which have reduced average 101 call waiting times from 3 minutes 35 ses in August, to 1 minute and 6 secs in February. Now, in anticipation of a further surge in demand over the busy summer months, and to improve crime recording, additional improvements will be made, including: New accommodation at Fulford Road in York for the larger team of call handlers and staff Improved training and tutoring facilities so people can be coached in smaller groups, more quickly 32 additional full-time staff State-of-the-art IT equipment A new Crime and Occurrence Management Unit It is very important for the public to have full confidence in the police’s response and I hope this will go some way to reassuring you that action is being taken. Julia Mulligan SURGERIES Residents from Stokesley and the surrounding area have their chance to their raise concerns about policing or community safety issues when the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Julia Mulligan, comes to Stokesley on Tuesday 10th April. 9
The appointment based surgeries will take place between 1.00pm, and 3.00pm at Stokesley Library, Town Close, North Road, Stokesley, TS9 5DH, giving residents the opportunity to raise personal or private issues, good or bad, on a one to one basis. Surgeries are by appointment only. If you would like to book some time with Julia - or for further information about other Surgeries - please call 01423 569562 or email info@northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk Surgeries are organised around the county on different days and at different times; you do not necessarily have to go to the surgery closest to your home, but can choose the most convenient one. For more information on advice surgeries, visit our website at: https://www.northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/events/stokesley-advice-surgery-2/

TIME FOR A LAUGH Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you'll have to pee. Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible place in the universe. Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal; someone always answers. Variation Law - If you change traffic lanes, the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now. Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone will ring. Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know INCREASES dramatically when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with. 10
Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, IT WILL!!! Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. Law of the Theatre & Arenas - At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk. The Coffee Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. Murphy's Law of Lockers - If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. Law of Physical Surfaces The chances of an open jam sandwich landing face down on a floor are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible IF you don't know what you are talking about. Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they're ugly. Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it OR the store will stop selling it! Doctors' Law - If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there, you'll feel better. But don't make an appointment and you'll stay sick
OIL CLUB We will be ordering again sometime during April/May. However if anyone is desperately short we will always strive to get the best price even for a single delivery. Also don't forget if you have a problem with your oil tank, we can put you in touch with a company who will hopefully resolve it, even in an emergency.
