Some of us have been meeting every Monday night at Knit and Natter Group to knit or crochet poppies and others have been following our patterns and doing them at home. We hope to collect at least 1000 and will display them outside the front of the hall on 11th November. There is still time to join in and all poppies will be collected by midOctober. If you would like to help please get in touch for the pattern, come along on Monday nights, or leave your Poppies in the hall any time it is open. Ann Thomas (catcabcam@googlemail.com)

HOLIDAYS This is the season for holidays, especially if there are children in the family. For many it is a break from the normal routine to, perhaps, visit friends or family, visit familiar places or explore new horizons. Some like energetic activities whilst others look for peace and rest. We are all different. Holidays are a good opportunity to recharge our batteries. For those of us who are planning holidays, let’s remember those who are required to work during this summer period. The word ‘holiday’ comes from a very old phrase ‘Holy Day’. No matter if we have a faith or none, we can all give thanks for such periods. The beginning of September is a little like a new year. Schools reopen. Clubs and leisure activities start up again for the Autumn and Winter. Working or on holiday I trust that you have a great and rewarding time. TIME FOR A SMILE

‘I’m taking my wife on holiday to northern Italy this year.’ ‘Genoa?’ ‘I should hope so, we’ve been married for 20 years’. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, that person sends out a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. (Robert F Kennedy).

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH We will not be doing any watches in August due to volunteer holidays. To continue effective monitoring we need additional volunteers. The watches are around 1 hour long, at times to suit availability. They comprise of the measuring of vehicle speed (using a speed gun - simple training given) and recording of any speeding vehicle's registration number, make, model, and colour. Teams of 4 are used and rotation of job role is undertaken as required and members support one another in their role. It has made a big difference to the % of vehicles speeding through the village. As well as supporting your community it is a good chance to meet and chat to other village members as well as being enjoyable (mostly!!). Thinking of joining us, then please contact Phil Taylor at scapa20@hotmail.com or Dave Campy on 01642 710320 7

An evening with Rishi Sunak MP Our local MP, Rishi Sunak, participated in a lively question and answer event held at the village hall on 16th June. Despite a relatively low turnout, more than 30 residents attended and enjoyed the opportunity to meet Rishi and to hear his responses to a range of issues. Pre-submitted questions were put to Rishi, including topics such as education, protection of birds of prey and wildlife, fly-tipping, transport links and austerity as well as topical issues such as local services (notably the decrease in high street banking facilities) and superfast/fibre-optic broadband. There was plenty of discussion with reassurance from Rishi on where action was due to take place. He made notes of concerns and promised to follow these up. The more formal Question Time was followed by an informal opportunity to speak to Rishi and fellow residents, during which a delicious buffet and drinks were also served. This was definitely an evening to remember and Rishi’s participation was appreciated by his audience. It’s not every day one gets the chance to ask direct questions of an MP! Rishi Sunak MP with Philip Taylor (Chair of the Parish Council) and Walter Pattison MBE, who proposed the vote of thanks to Rishi following the Q&A session.

DOG FOULING IN CHURCH YARD The problem of excessive dog fouling in the church yard and other open areas has been reported by the person who cuts the grass around the village. This is not only a nuisance but is also unpleasant and creates health problems. Can I ask all dog owners to please pick up their dog’s waste and put it in the numerous bins around the village and encourage other dog walkers they meet to do the same. The village is looking very pretty with all the flower boxes etc and it is a shame to spoil it. Dave Campy

PROPERTY MARKING Stokesley NPT has access to the Dot Peen property marking equipment on 18/19th August. If you or anybody you know has equipment that requires FREE marking please email HambletonPropertyMarking@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

and an officer will be in touch. Dot peen marking involves using a tungsten carbide-tipped pin to indent an object with dots to create a visible, permanent unique number. The unique number will be entered onto the national Immobilise property register database. It can be used on everything from steel and aluminium to plastic. It can therefore be used in farms, on garage and garden tools, power tools, computers and electrical devices, mobile phones and tablets, equestrian tack, golf clubs, musical instrument cases, cycles – and much more besides

LITTLE BOOKS OF SCAMS At a recent Neighbourhood Watch Meeting, Stokesley’s Sergeant Ross mentioned that the Metropolitan Police had produced “Little books of Scams” which were very helpful for those people who were unsure of what scams are and how to prevent them being affected by them. I have pdf copies of these books and can send them to anyone who is interested. My contact details are shown in the Grapevine contact list at the end of this publication. David Campy

TIME FOR A LAUGH (1) These "glorious" insults are from an era before the English language was infiltrated by four-letter words: "He had delusions of adequacy ." - Walter Kerr "He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." Winston Churchill "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow 12

"He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." - William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway) "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I'll waste no time reading it." - Moses Hadas "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain "He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends." - Oscar Wilde "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one." - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill "Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second... if there is one." Winston Churchill, in response "I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here." Stephen Bishop "He is a self-made man and worships his creator." - John Bright "I've just learned about his illness. Let's hope it's nothing trivial." - Irvin S. Cobb "He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others." Samuel Johnson "He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up." - Paul Keating "In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily." Charles Count Talleyrand "He loves nature in spite of what it did to him." - Forrest Tucker "Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?" - Mark Twain "His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork." - Mae West "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go." Oscar Wilde 13

"He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination." - Andrew Lang (1844-1912) "He has Van Gogh's ear for music." - Billy Wilder "I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. But I'm afraid this wasn't it." Groucho Marx A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease." “That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress." TIME FOR A LAUGH (2) They're back! Those wonderful church bulletins! Thank God for the church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (read carefully) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services. The fasting & prayer conference includes meals. Scouts are saving aluminium cans, bottles and other items to be recycled; proceeds will be used to cripple children. The sermon this morning, "Jesus walks on the water". The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Don't let worry kill you off - let the church help Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be try-outs for the choir. They need 14

all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24th in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. Pot-luck Supper Sunday at 5:00 pm - prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 pm there will be a hymn-singing in the park across from the church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday. Low self-esteem support group will meet Thursday at 7 pm . Please use the back door. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the church basement Friday at 7 pm. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. 15
