I have a lovely thank you card to us all from Sue Nuttall, the co-founder of TATT, which I’ll leave in the Village Hall. On the Sunday after hearing what we’d made, Sue sent an update to say our £400 will treat a dog shot twice in the eye (beggars belief) and support their effective neutering programme. Hope everyone present had as good a night as me. To make a difference to animals lives too is the icing on the cake. I will certainly be arranging more events to fundraise. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. A thank you to my good friend Maria too who contributed towards the cost of hiring the hall. jo.batey@talktalk.net 07759531050, Churchside Cottage, 4 Hilton Road KNIT AND NATTER Knit and Natter finished on 25th March. SEAMER METHODIST CHURCH REDECORATION At the end of July a decorator has been very busy and all the internal aspects of the Church building have been re-decorated. The standard of the workmanship is first class and is a credit to the skills of the decorator. The whole building now looks bright and cheerful. It is a pleasure to worship in such pleasant surroundings. We welcome everyone to come and see the Church whether or not you join us for worship. SUMMERTIME
Many of a certain generation will recall the opening words of the George Gershwin song “Summertime and the living is easy”. Later in this song are the words “One of these mornings you goin’ to rise up singing; then you’ll spread your wings”. 5
The song is a vision of a better time. Many of us find time in August for a holiday, or time to visit family and friends, enjoy picnics (weather dependent) Holidays can be a time to re-charge our batteries, to perhaps dream of future happy days and events. A writer from nearly three thousand years ago wrote ‘Be still, and know that I am God’. We all need to find time to think and contemplate who we are and what we are doing with our lives. Summer is a good time to do that. PARISH NOTICEBOARDS We have two very smart new Parish noticeboards, sited outside the Parish Hall and in Tame Bridge. The purpose of the noticeboards is to keep residents updated on discussions made at Parish Council meeting and relevant local issues. They are also used for displaying information provided by the District Council, the County Council and other organisations based in North Yorkshire, which will be of interest or relevance to residents. Should you wish to display a notice in one or both boards, please contact the Parish Clerk in the first instance, as the boards are kept locked – please do not attempt to force them open! Thank you. SEAMER PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE The May meeting began with the Annual Parish Meeting, the Chairman’s report from which, was published in the Grapevine in June. Following the APM, the Parish Council meeting began with an Open Forum, attended by three members of the community. The new Parish Council was welcomed and Councillor Philip Taylor was re-elected as Chairman. The Parish Council were pleased that both District Councillors Bryn Griffiths and Bridget Fortune were re-elected as both have been very supportive of Seamer Parish Council for many years. Planning applications were discussed, including those current, pending and granted. Village maintenance was discussed, key aspects being the imminent installation of the new benches outside the Village Hall, by School Cottage and by the pond. The two new noticeboards would also be installed before the next Parish Council meeting. An additional grass cut has taken place and following discussion at earlier meetings, the removal of excess reeds from the pond would be undertaken. Footpaths within the parish were discussed. An engineer from NYCC has made a site visit to the proposed site of the traffic refuge in Tame Bridge. Community Fund applications were discussed, including the annual donation of £500 to support the Globe Library. The Chair gave feedback on the recent fifteen CSW deployments. Councillor Mark Murphy reported back on the recent Village Hall Committee meeting and AGM with various items for action noted. Minutes of this meeting are displayed on the noticeboards and on the website. An update from the July Parish Council meeting will appear in the next Grapevine. The next meeting of the Parish Council is on Tuesday 17 th September, 2019. As always, residents are welcome to attend. Residents can access information about Parish Council and Community Fund matters in the following ways: a) Attendance at the bimonthly Parish Council meetings, details of which are publicised in various locations: e.g. Parish Council noticeboards, website. b) c)
The Grapevine, where articles are regularly published. Parish Council minutes; these are displayed on noticeboards and on the website. d) By attendance at the Pop-In on Monday mornings, which Parish Council members attend whenever possible. If there are any points that need clarification, these will be fed back to the main PC meetings. e) Residents are able to contact the Parish Council via email or telephone to discuss any matters that are of concern to them. All matters concerned with the Community Fund are discussed as an agenda 8
item at Parish Council meetings. Any residents who attend form part of the discussion and all viewpoints are taken into consideration when making a final decision. Philip Taylor, Chair of the Parish Council Email: scapa20@hotmail.com (Parish Clerk) Seamer Parish Council encompasses Seamer and Tame Bridge. TIME FOR A LAUGH (Classroom comments from Kids) History In wartime children who lived in big cities had to be evaporated because it was safer in the countryside. Sometimes in the war they take prisoners and keep them as Ostridges until the war is over. However, some prisoners were held in constipation camps Then Joan of Ark met her end. She was burnt as a steak. Sir Walter Raleigh circumcised the world with a big clipper. Maths The total is when you add up all the numbers and a remainder is an animal that pulls Santa on his slay. I would like to be an accountant but you have to know a lot about Moths. If it’s less than 90 degrees it a cute angel. Religious Studies A Mosque is a sort of church. The main difference is that the roof is doomed. I asked my Mum why we say old men at the end of prayers at skool, I don’t know any old men except Grandpa. If you marry two people you are a pigamist, but morons are allowed to do this. Holidays On ar activity holiday, dad wanted to ride the hores but Mum said they were too ekspensiv. Geography The closest town to France is Dover. You can get to France on a train or you can get a fairy. In Geography we learnt that countries with sea round them are called islands and ones without sea are incontinents. In Scandinavia, the Danish people come from Denmark, the Norwegians from Norway and the lapdancers from Lapland. 9
The Arts In Last year’s Christmas concert Linsi played the main prat. I played one of the smaller prats. But this year I would like to play a bigger prat .
Submitted By Joan Barnes IS IT "COMPLETE", "FINISHED" OR "COMPLETELY FINISHED”? No English dictionary has been able to adequately explain the difference between these two words – "Complete" and "Finished”. In a recent linguistic competition held in London and attended by, supposedly, the best in the world, Samdar Balgobin, a Guyanese man, was the clear winner with a standing ovation which lasted over 5 minutes. The final question was: “How do you explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easy to understand? Here is his astute answer: "When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE. When you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED. And, when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!" He won a trip around the world and a case of 25-year old Scotch.
