EDITOR’S NOTES

I hope this finds you all well and healthy as we continue our journey living around the Coronavirus. I apologise for not having a Grapevine since July but I am sure you all appreciate why this was not possible re Covid. I would also add that I have had emergency surgery and a 6 week period of inactivity. Thankfully, I have recovered sufficiently to produce a small version of Grapevine. I hope that, like me, you appreciate how lucky we are to live in this area with all its opportunities to take exercise and “enjoy” the open spaces and views and neighbours who help one another. By its nature Grapevine is a magazine about the residents of Seamer and Tame Bridge and I depend on you as readers to supply information etc to pass onto other residents. I often get comments about the different articles and how much is going on in the village. I hope to produce another Grapevine at the end of November to include any activities that may be taking place during December and January. I would appreciate any information about reopening activities, events, articles etc (including what you are doing to cope with the restrictions) for this period. Please get them to me before the 28th November at 08.00 hours. Dave Campy

ST. MARTIN’S CHURCH Resumption of services : While in vacancy we are trying to operate as a Festival Church. Our first event, a short Eucharist Service, will be held to celebrate both Remembrance Day and St Martin on: Wednesday 11th November at 11am. The service will be preceded by a 2 mins silence either in church or at the Village Hall Memorial Garden. The church can hold approximately 20 people (depending on household groups) socially distanced. Please advise the Churchwarden if you would like to attend. Judith Turland: 01642 710489, Judithturland@gmail.com

Who is St Martin? St Martin lived between around AD 316 and 397. He began his career as a Roman soldier, but one day he saw a freezing beggar in the street. He cut his cloak in two and gave half to the beggar. Afterwards he dreamt that the beggar was actually Jesus and it changed his life. Martin became a Christian and resigned from the army. He later became 2

Bishop of Tours in France. Martin is the patron saint of soldiers, beggars and France. His feast day is November 11th – Armistice Day.

VILLAGE HALL NEWS AND EVENTS

Seamer Memorial hall is still closed until further notice. A committee Meeting on November 4th will consider reopening. SEAMER VILLAGE HALL 100+ CLUB

As the village hall has been closed since March, I have been unable to do the monthly draws. I have now collected most of the renewal fees for the last six months so will be doing the draws for March to October at the village hall committee meeting on November 4th. I will then drop the prize money off to the lucky winners as soon as possible afterwards. The results will be in the next Grapevine. November is the beginning of the 100+ Club year so for those members who would normally renew this month, I will contact you be email, phone or call and see you. If you are not at home, I will leave a letter with details of how to contact me. At the moment this is the only source of income that the village hall has, so I hope you will continue to support it. If anyone would like to join, it costs £12 a year per number, with £6 going to the village hall funds and £6 given out as prize money. I look forward to hearing from you. NOW & THEN MAGAZINE The October/November copy is available to collect from a box under the seat at the front of the village hall. If you are out for a walk, pick one up when you are passing. There will also be some copies of the last issue if you didn’t get one.

JAM & CHUTNEY Many of you that go to the village hall have bought jars of the jam and chutney that my friend Jenny Firman makes, to raise money for the local branch of Cancer UK. To help her to continue with her fundraising, if any of you would like to buy any of the following, please let me know and I will deliver them to you: Jams @ £2 Blackcurrant Raspberry, Strawberry and Gooseberry Raspberry and Rhubarb Strawberry and Rhubarb 3

Chutney @ £2 Chutney @ £1 Pear and Ginger Green Tomato Spicy Pumpkin Christine Cooper chris_cooper1@hotmail.com 01642 701733 COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH AND LITTER PICKING The Community Speed Watch has recommenced with NYP consent and following their Guidelines. There had been a noticeable increase in the percentage and actual speed of speeding vehicles passing through the village during lockdown. However, since restart, these have fallen to near pre-lockdown figures, showing the effectiveness of this operation. It is hoped to start the litter picking again in the near future, dependent on Covid regulations in place at the time. The teams could always do with new volunteers and if anyone is interested please contact me and I will pass the information on to those that organise the events. However, as we approach winter months, fewer daylight hours and possible new Covid regulations mean they may well be scaled down. Dave Campy (Grapevine Editor) details under Contacts.

OIL CLUB Don’t forget to stock up for Christmas, prices were still below 30p per litre when we placed our September order. Order dates, 1st weeks in January, March, May, September, November. Contact. David Ward 01642 710333 or Gordon Reed 01642 711495 LOOKING AHEAD TO CHRISTMAS We will not be having Children's Workshops this year unfortunately but Santa may be at the Christmas Tree Lights Switch on. More information on that in the next Grapevine. Ann Thomas

All are welcome to attend one or both of these. THOGHT FOR THE MONTH ‘Therefore encourage one another and build each other up’ is a quote from a book in the Bible. Sometimes people we meet may walk around with a plastic smile on the part of their faces that can be seen but with heavy hearts. Beneath their designer face masks lies a person who longs for someone to share his/her thoughts with. As little and insignificant as a warm smile and kind words might seem, they can be the emotional healing someone is longing for. Some people go through bad times, difficult moments, loneliness and deep financial crisis but, still appear like any other in the streets. We need to be mindful of how we treat people. It is possible that, we might also be experiencing some slippery times in our own personal life or relationships. At such times, God expects us to 6

exhibit our spiritual maturity by reaching out to people in the same kind of need and encourage them. Whatsoever you sow into the life of others, God will multiply in our own lives. Therefore, our empathy, a loving smile, words of encouragement or even an ‘elbowshake’ can go a long way into assuring those going through challenges that someone truly cares for them. We are to be like Jesus and shine as light into the blurred areas of people’s lives. Do not let a day pass by without showing practical love to someone in need. Because of restrictions regarding physically meeting other people there is the telephone, ‘Facetime’ ‘Zoom’, ‘Lifesize’ and other virtual meeting possibilities. TIME FOR A SMILE A real Christian is a person who can give their parrot to the village gossip. Take care and look after yourselves Ron Kirk HOW TO BUILD A HEDGEHOG HOUSE Why not do something to help the wildlife during the winter period? Get busy and recycle house bricks to make a new home. The children will love it and perhaps the adults too! The pictures show how to do it but you can be inventive if you do not have the materials shown. Send Pictures of your efforts (and hedgehogs) to Dave for the next Grapevine!! Ann Thomas and Jo Batey LOCKDOWN Although life was very strange in April and May it was great to finally get out for a walk around the village and to greet people from a distance. It was heartening to see so many others out and about enjoying the outdoors and getting to know many of the public paths. The flower tubs were beautiful all summer and it was a joy to watch the coots on the pond. I think three survived out of the first hatch of eight and six were seen of the second hatch with the three elders helping the parents look after them. Tony 7

Barnes took some fantastic photos of them and lots of other birdlife photos in the area. Maybe we might display them in the Village Hall next year. Covid was and is still a devastating virus but it made us realise what brilliant neighbours we have. Many people offered help and went beyond the call of duty, not just here in Seamer but also in the wider area. Sadly, some people in the village are still suffering this awful illness and we wish them a speedy recovery. Sadly we are unable to have our service in The Memorial Hall this year. We will display our poppies there as usual and on the Methodist Chapel railings where a short services will be held see earlier notices. If you are looking for a way to donate to this year's Poppy Appeal with the poppy sellers confined to barracks, one of our Book Group's members , Victoria Turton,is doing a sponsored poppy run in aid of The Royal British Legion. details below https://mypoppyrun.britishlegion.org.uk/fundraising/MyPoppyRun2020VictoriaTurton OR drop it into 21,The Green.
