Good Cod! Collins celebrates double awards win We were thrilled that Richard and Claire were honoured with two prestigious awards in 2013. Managing Director Richard Collins won the Star Radio Lifetime Award 2013.This award acknowledges his achievements both personally and through the business he founded in 1980. Meanwhile, Richard’s daughter and Operations Director Claire Carter was also celebrating after the Women into the Network (WIN) Awards named her ‘One to Watch’ – a new award which was created just for her after being selected as runner up in the Key Woman Award category. She said: “It’s a great honour to receive this accolade. It was fantastic just to be nominated for the Key Woman Award and then to win a new award created just for me was overwhelming. I am also immensely
proud of my father having started up Collins from scratch into such a successful business. It is his hard work, positive attitude and determination that have made him such a success within the industry and I’m delighted that he has also been recognised for all that he has achieved.” WIN chair Nickie Gott added: “We felt Claire’s passion, dedication and commitment to the company goes above and beyond that of a member of the management team. The judges have never
made such an award in the past but on reading her application were very touched by some of the statements and also the passion demonstrated when she met with the judges.” Winning these two awards is testament to the hard work and commitment both Claire and Richard put into the business and is echoed by the progressive way all of Collins and Wraggs operate their business within the North East and Yorkshire.

Collins Judges Good Catch Award 2014
Sustainable fishing cha mpion found Britain’s most responsible chip shop We were thrilled to have been enlisted to find the most sustainable and responsibly-stocked fish and chip shop in the country in judging and sponsoring The Good Catch Award at the highly regarded National Fish and Chip Awards 2014. The award recognises fish and chip businesses that are leading the way in the responsible sourcing of sustainable fish, working to protect fishing supplies so they are available for future generations to enjoy. As a co-sponsor Collins also judged the award – a role it was well suited to given its commitment to championing sustainable fishing practices and the fact that it only supplies fish caught in sustainable waters. It co-sponsored the award with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which has officially certified Collins for the majority of their cod and haddock fish as part of their sustainable and responsible approach. Managing Director Richard Collins, who presented the award during the recent London awards ceremony, said: “This is the first time we’ve been a judge and co-sponsor of the event and it has given us a real insight into how the sustainability message is getting through

to the industry and the great work being done to ensure the widespread responsible sourcing of fish. “The awards are extremely highly regarded within the industry and I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to reward the business that most deserves the Good Catch title.” The judging process saw Collins and the award representatives visit shortlisted businesses to see at close hand how they were embracing the concept of using sustainably sourced produce. The national winner was Richardson’s Fish Bar in Fleetwood, Lancashire, who

were visited in a mystery shopper style visit earlier in the year by Richard Collins and Awards representative Sam Stone. The other shortlisted businesses visited by the co-sponsors were Frankie’s Fish & Chips in Brae, Shetland; Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth, Devon and Rockfish in Dartmouth, Devon. Richard Collins said: “The whole process has been thoroughly enjoyable but the main highlight for us was being able to visit one of the shortlisted businesses. Having been in the industry since 1980, we feel we have brought a professional point of view to the judging process and it was very interesting to see how they incorporate sustainability into their business.” One of the other local winners judged by Collins was Quayside in Whitby, North Yorkshire who won the coveted Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award. The National Fish and Chip Awards are among the most respected in the food industry with fish and chip businesses from across the UK vying for top spot in a number of key categories. The National Fish and Chip Awards 2014 are organised by seafood authority Seafish and culminated in a ceremony in London on Wednesday 22 January. Industry News - blog Serving up sustainability and quality grub in equal measure
To achieve real positive change and raise awareness around sustainable fishing, it requires both suppliers and those businesses serving up fish to their punters to lead by example. On the supplier side, we’ve long been a champion of sustainable fishing and as one of the first and only accredited suppliers to the official international organisation responsible for monitoring the important role of sustainability within the fish industry, we like to play an active role in protecting fish supplies for this and future generations. (MSC Certification No:MEP-C-108). At the customer-facing side of the industry – namely chip shops and restaurants – there are also exemplary businesses doing their bit in the name of sustainable fishing practices. But there are surely few as active on that score as Colmans – a fish and chip institution in the North East of England that is renowned for its eco-friendly approach to the trade. What makes the South Shields restaurant and takeaway shop even more impressive is that it has achieved notoriety for its sustainable approach while also being recognised as dishing out one of the tastiest plates of fish and chips in the country. We’ve supplied fish to Colmans for over 30 years and seen the family-run business flourish and continue its great fish and chip tradition that started in 1926. Earlier this year it was named the number one traditional chip shop in Britain by men’s lifestyle magazine Esquire. The magazine’s food editor is Tom Parker-Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall’s son, and the publication chose the Tyneside business above takeaway shops in Torquay, London, Suffolk, East Yorkshire, Guernsey and Fife. Colmans has also been a regular fixture in the Times’ Top 10 UK Fish and Chip Shops and in 2007 was voted Best UK Takeaway at the BBC Food and Farming Awards. Owner Richard Ord, meanwhile,

is widely regarded as the best fryer in the North East of England. Alongside the quality of its food, it has also received plaudits for its eco-friendly ethos and was once described in the press as “the nearest thing to an eco-chippy you’re likely to find”. The restaurant only serves fish from sustainable grounds and uses additive-free vegetable oil. It also sends its waste fat to be made into bio-fuel. Perhaps the most important gauge of the quality of a business, however, is customer feedback. And Colmans certainly delivers there, with respected review site Trip Advisor hosting a seemingly endless stream of positive comments. So Colmans is proof, if it were needed, that sustainable practices and business success in the fishing industry can go hand in hand. Read more at www.collinsseafoods.co.uk/news for the full blog.

Training the best at Collins and Wraggs! We are always keen to work with good people at Collins and Wraggs and specifically we are proud that we have so many local people employed at our depots. As well as boosting our local economy, it really benefits our business as we have lower staff turnover, lower training costs and high staff morale. In our teams in Leeds and in Newton Aycliffe we have many people who are also improving their skills. Many of our younger staff who have joined the business as apprenticeships are working hard to increase their business knowledge. Annie at Wraggs, is doing her NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration due for completion in April and Joanna at Collins is completing her NVQ Diploma in Business Administration Level 4. Sam Richardson, our Business Management under-graduate is going from strength to strength after working with us over the last year and can’t wait to get going when he joins the company full time after he has graduated.
