Naturally Ever After It all began with a violet. In early 2012 I was taking a walk on a Vermont country road, pondering what I wanted to call the nature inspired wedding blog I was about to begin.

The little purple petals caught my eye among the ferns at the edge of the woods and I thought, of course. I had always loved the fairy-like flowers – they grew wild in the woods where I used to roam near my childhood home in New Hampshire. I plucked one and dried it between the pages of a book and, to me, it became a sort of emblem for natural beauty and the nature inspired bride. I’m hardly the first to be so inspired by these petite blooms. According to Theophrastus, they were being sold in the market at Athens circa 400BC, having been grown in specialist nurseries in Attica. (If you’re interested in the history of violets I highly recommend reading Violets: The History & Cultivation of Scented Violets by Roy E. Coombs.)

In your hands you have the result of a magazine that has been in the making for more than a year. Seeing it come to life has been a lot like watching a plant grow from seed to bud to blossom – only with a lot more work. As you enter this new phase in your life, of planning for a wedding, and more importantly a marriage, it is my hope that this premier issue will inspire, delight, and excite you for the beauty you are welcoming into your life.

Artist Spotlight {Michael Michaud}

Artist Michael Michaud has been creating his Silver Season Jewelry collection since 1992 and has mastered the skill of manipulating molds into beautiful pieces of jewelry. Michaud describes his work as “copies of nature” since each piece is created directly from nature. He creates his unique jewelry by creating molds directly from botanical elements in a process similar to lost-wax casting. While traditional lost-wax casting begins with a hand-carved model of wax, Michaud instead uses an actual leaf, branch or flower in place of the wax model. A mold is created around the botanical element and as it is heated the plant matter burns away and leaves behind a beautifully detailed mold of itself. Adornments Pretty Things

Once you’ve found the one and then the dress, its time to choose all the finishing touches to personalize your look. A headpiece can transform your entire appearance, giving it that extra something to frame your face and make you feel the most beautiful version of yourself. As you start dreaming about your Big Day look you’ll probably gather a mental list of what makeup you’ll need. If there was ever an excuse for splurging on makeup your wedding is it! Chances are you‘ll start thinking about cosmetics more than usual; especially if you keep your daily look pretty basic. And then there’s the question of what’s best not only to achieve a naturally glowing and beautiful look, but what products are safe? A common misconception is that if it’s on the store’s shelf, it must be safe, right? Unfortunately the FDA is not going to protect you. In the United States, testing of cosmetics is voluntary and according to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database, 89% of ingredients used in personal care products have not been evaluated for safety by any publicly accountable institution. That means it is up to you as a consumer to learn about the ingredients in the products you use.

In the process of creating this guide I became a bit obsessed. I personally tested products from more than 40 different brands to find the prettiest and the most natural cosmetics and beauty care items to recommend to you. My hope is that this guide will help you find the perfect ones for your natural Big Day look.

Some products are more natural than others, and I don’t think you have to be 100% natural and/or organic in order to

enjoy and benefit from natural beauty. In my opinion a product that is made from 96% natural sources is far better than many of the alternatives for example. If you research the ingredients in the products you’ve been using for years, you might cringe to find that there are things like phthalates, parabens, lead, and even substances that generate cancer-causing formaldehyde! The truth is making healthier decisions is a process, and how you go about this transition is personal. Whether you want to throw out all your current products at once and start over, or gradually replace your products as your current ones run out is up to you.

I firmly believe that what you put on your body (and your skin does absorb what you put on it) should not only work to enhance your physical appearance, but also your wellbeing. And using said products should certainly not have an adverse effect on your health. The list of potentially hazardous ingredients is so long there are entire books on the subject (I recommend A Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients by Ruth Winter, M.S. if you’re interested), so to start below is a list of 10 common cosmetic ingredients to avoid. And I also recommend using EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database (www.ewg.org/skindeep).

Connie + Brad Littleton, Colorado 5-24-2012 Connie and Brad met through a mutual friend at work, and both sharing a love of the outdoors, moved to Colorado together in August 2010.

Christmas break was their first chance to take a vacation and they were also looking to start a new Christmas tradition as a couple so that is how their first annual “Christmas Camping” trip began. “I had been to Arches National Park in Utah with my family before and completely fell in love with the place. I wanted to share that experience with Brad, so we set our sights on Utah for our first trip,” says Connie. They enjoyed a beautiful and sunny time in the park, with temps in the mid 40’s during the day.

On Christmas day, Brad started out by giving Connie a Christmas present, even though they agreed not to get anything for each other. Still, Connie didn’t suspect anything.

They headed out to hike a 7-mile loop at the north end of the park, enjoying the day hiking around and taking in all of the sights. As the sun dipped toward the horizon, Brad waited for the perfect place, and a time when they were alone, to stop her. It was on top of a tall and thin red rock formation with a canyon at their feet and snowcapped mountains in the distance that Connie was unable to imagine how her Christmas could get any better. Then Brad paused and took a deep, nervous breath.

“I had no idea that he was even thinking about proposing - so I was

completely caught off guard,” says Connie. “But as soon as he got nervous, I knew, and burst into tears. He started saying things to me that people only say to each other in movies... and then asked me to marry him right there on the trail.”

Their wedding day reflected the natural beauty that they are both drawn to and have bonded in. With simple, yet breathtaking details, at the Chatfield Botanic Gardens they celebrated in a style full of organic textures and colors. A beautiful neutral color palette of cream, blush, and blue was the perfect complement to the stunning floral design by Bare Root Flora with pops of watercolor violet, peach, and yellow. They also included the ancient tradition of hand binding at their ceremony.

Looking back on their day, Connie says one of their most memorable moments was simply having all of their loved ones there to celebrate with them, especially since many of their guests were from out of town.

Their advice to future brides & grooms? “Get at least a day-of coordinator if not a full wedding planner! Mine helped me so much with the design of the wedding and knowing which vendors fit my style and vision.

Also having a day-of coordinator allows you to actually enjoy your day, instead of having to deal with meeting vendors and coordinating for your big day.”

Katy +Mike Hampshire, UK 7-28-2012 Katy and Mike are, as they say, “two peas in a pod.” When they met at age 18 and 19, at a house party, it was Katy that gave Mike some tips on where to place his checkers and win the popular drinking game. “I just thought he was a really lovely person,” says Katy. “I would always hunt him out when we went out as a group and wanted to sit next to him as I knew that I’d have a laugh. One time we were out with our friends and chatted for hours (just chatting) in our own little world.” When Mike stepped out of the room for a moment, a friend suggested to Katy that there might be something more there. Right then, she decided her friend was right, and when he came back in to the room she walked right over and gave him a kiss! “He’s definitely my best friend,” says Katy.

Mike proposed when they went on holiday to Morocco. He had planned a wonderful desert proposal under the stars, but sadly it rained!

The next day mike took her to a stunning boutique hotel instead of returning to the little hostel where they’d been staying. Katy knew something was up when they went inside and rose petals were scattered everywhere.

That night Mike popped the question during a romantic dinner.

Their relaxed country wedding included vintage, boho (we love Katy’s beaded sandals!) and handmade country details. “My dad made the table plan, which was perfect! I made some hessian flower holders which we

put the confetti in, the holders made by Mike’s mother.”

Their love of photography, and fondness for vintage cameras is where they got the idea for the vintage cameras and books that made up the fun, artsy centerpieces. The coral and white flowers added a country chic sweetness while also pairing gorgeously with the peachy coral hue of the handmade bridesmaid dresses and stationery. They also made it more personal by designing a logo just for the wedding, two swallows with a heart between them, which was added to the menus, table plan, place cards, and invitations. Katy also made cushions with the logo to put on the benches in the courtyard. And she made ‘LOVE’ cushions which were originally meant for a sofa but they became a hit at the photobooth!

When thinking on a “most memorable moment” Katy says there isn’t just one – there’s the ceremony in which the registrar was so lovely and even made her laugh when she was “happy crying,” and the fact that their fathers stood as their witnesses and their mothers both read poems. There were the hilarious speeches, and the moments with her father before walking down the aisle. And as far as planning, she says “let your imagination go wild! Include touches that are personal and that you love.

And get your family involved! It’ll make the details more special and save you loads of cash!”

Erin + Andy Aspen, Colorado 8-18-12 When Erin tied her running shoes and stretched out her legs one morning at the Denver running club, she had no idea a mutual friend would introduce her to her future husband, Andy. Their first few dates involved running a 5k loop and then eating pasta and drinking patio wine. “After a few of our running dates, Andy convinced me that I should run a half marathon with him, promising that he would let me win. I didn’t end up beating him in the race (he beat me by 40 minutes!) but it did turn out to be a “win” in that it was the day of our first kiss!” says Erin.

In October 2011, the two were working for Andy’s father at a medical conference in San Francisco. After a long weekend working the conference, they decided to get out and see the city. In lieu of a rental car they bought two tickets for the hop-on-hop-off bus and spent several hours exploring different spots in the picturesque city. The next stop was the Golden Gate Bridge. They hopped off the bus and walked across the bridge, surprised by how noisy it was. But once they got to the second pillar it was amazingly quiet and no one else was around. After gazing out at the beautiful bay and taking some touristy pictures, Andy dropped down to one knee and asked Erin to spend forever with him!

For their August wedding, Erin and Andy wanted to create an atmo-

sphere that truly reflected who they are both as individuals and as a couple. Erin is drawn to all things girly – soft pastels, lace, ribbon, calligraphy, watercolor, the color pink, and vintage finds. Andy enjoys a good pair of cowboy boots, rustic elements, the color blue, and simplicity. Their wedding day was a blend of both their styles, and twined together beautifully.

The idyllic mountain venue, wildflowers in bloom at every turn, provided a gorgeous Colorado setting with rustic elements that Andy loves and soft, feminine décor that represented Erin’s girly style.

Erin’s Claire Pettibone dress, with delicate lace detailing, was the perfect choice – we think she looked like a mountain meadow goddess!

Her bridesmaids were dressed in short ivory dresses of various laces and necklines for a mismatched yet cohesive country look. They all showed off their cowgirl boots with Colorado charm! The elaborate ceremony arch and the bouquets by Lauryl Lane displayed a lush array of blooms in peachy pink hues almost too pretty for words, and complimented the natural surroundings with grace and organic elegance. After the mountain view ceremony with hay bale seating, Erin and Andy rode off in a rustic horse drawn carriage for some photos by a breathtaking lake before celebrating at the authentic Western lodge at T Lazy 7 Ranch.

Angie +Jason Cameron, West Virginia 6-15-13 Don’t we all just love a romance story that materializes out of seemingly nowhere? For Angie and Jason, it was just that. Jason was returning from a trip and needed a ride home from the airport, so a friend of a sister of a friend gave Jason Angie’s cell phone number and, with no other options than an expensive cab ride, he gave her a call. Angie, on a whim, answered the “unknown number.” During the car ride they discovered they might benefit from studying with each other (Jason was studying for his last board exam for his medical license, and Angie for the MCAT, to apply to medical school). In the months to follow they became close friends with each other, and the local Starbucks.

During their studies they had to spend four years long-distance as Angie began medical school in West Virginia, and Jason his residency program in Florida. Each Christmas they made each other heartfelt gifts. Their third Christmas together was no exception – Jason traveled to West Virginia and gave her a box adorned with heart-shaped pasta and inside were 12 handmade ornaments, all signifying a special memory that they shared.

The last one was a small laptop made of laminated card stock, detailed down to the hand drawn keyboard. “Being apart, our laptops had become a large part of our lives,” says Angie. The tiny ornament laptop screen con-

Police hay ewe wheel mare Reem he. “I read the message twice and it wasn’t until Jason read it out loud that I realized it said, ‘I love you Angie Niehaus with all my heart! Please say you will marry me.’ It was also that moment I noticed Jason on one knee with ring in hand. I said yes and we cried!”

Their country wedding was set at Angie’s parents’ 100 acre farm in rural West Virginia. As someone who learned to drive a tractor long before a car, family and home are of the utmost importance to Angie and the farm was always where she envisioned getting married. Ripe in colorful details, their day included hay bale seating blanketed in an eclectic mix of quilts from Jason’s mother, Angie’s hair comb (made from the headpiece her grandmother wore in her wedding), and her bouquet – made of 96 brooches all previously worn by family and friends.

Their barn reception was replete with round hay bales, burlap décor, bright daisies, and a stunning chandelier, built by Angie’s father, of mason jars and weathered wood from one of the original buildings on the property. Kimberly + Jacob Los Angeles, California 4-12-2013 For Kimberly and Jacob, both artists, their wedding was an innovative collaboration from the start...and seriously their proposal story is so cute and creative! Starting on their second “dating” anniversary Jacob began giving Kimberly love letters one week apart, all of which told their story. When she got the third note it read “even though these notes will end in one week’s time, it will be the start of something amazing.” Being the curious girl that she is, she immediately knew he’d be proposing in a week. “I had it all planned out down to the nail appointment and everything,” says Kimberly. But little did she know it was a clever distraction.

That Saturday (just three days later) they went on a fabulous date.

When they returned to Kimberly’s apartment Jacob suddenly told her to close her eyes and that he had a surprise for her. Completely taken off guard, when she opened her eyes he handed her a notebook. “During our dating relationship it became a little joke that whenever I said something important, whether it was something I wanted to do someday, a fear of mine, a major like/ dislike, etc. he would always say “dually noted.” Little did I know that after I said those things he would go home and literally write them down in that notebook so he would never forget!” As Kimberly flipped through the pages of their memories together her tears began to flow. “Jacob told me that he started this book because of me and wanted

to finish it with me. He got down on one knee and proposed! After much crying and celebrating he eventually handed me that fourth love letter and on the inside it said “oh, I’m sorry, did I say you’d be getting this next Thursday? I meant TODAY! Woohoo! We’re engaged!””

Their soft, woodsy, romantic, wedding included tons of personal touches and nearly every detail was handmade by the bride and groom or their family and friends. They created the invitations, the hand painted signs, cake topper, collected bottles/ jars for the center pieces, etc. Their friends and family were instrumental in creating the ribbon garland, doily garland, the wood stump center pieces, the arbor above their sweetheart table, the cake and cupcakes, and even all of the flower arrangements.

“Having all of our family and friends so heavily involved in our special day made the whole process so special and unique to us. We were able to be really artsy and creative together which helped make the process so much fun and something we’ll never forget,” says Kimberly. One of their most memorable moments was their private “first look” in which they read a letter to one another before the ceremony. “Being able to see Jake, hold him, cry with him, hug him and just laugh and be SO excited together was such a special moment. It not only alleviated my stress before the ceremony, but it also was a rare moment where continued on page 84

it was just the two of us with no distractions. We soaked up that moment as we read to each other what that day meant and what we were promising one another.”

Their advice to future couples? “Before you do anything at all make a list of your priorities. Photography was the most important element of the day to us (besides getting married of course!). From there we adjusted the costs in other areas so we could have a beautiful day and stay on budget.”

Caleigh + Brandon New Gloucester, Maine 6-15-2013 Caleigh and Brandon both grew up in Maine, but didn’t meet until they were both working in Washington D.C. for Senator Susan Collins. They spent time together among groups of friends, but didn’t date until after they moved back to Maine. “We both knew right when we started dating that we were going to get married,” says Caleigh.

In February of 2011, they took an amazing romantic getaway (a Christmas gift from Brandon), at Lake Tahoe. The resort, with a huge stone fireplace at the entrance and tucked halfway up the mountain, was like a fairytale village. After dropping off their bags they decided to go for a drive to the gorgeous lake. “I was secretly hoping he would propose when we were driving,” says Caleigh. “He would pull off the road from time to time and every time I thought, maybe this is it?! One time he pulled off the road and asked me to go set up the camera to take a timed shot of us.

I was thinking wink wink, when I turn around he’s going to be proposing.

He wasn’t. So I made up my mind not to ruin the whole trip by thinking he was going to propose every five minutes only to be disappointed.” They returned to the hotel at dusk and Brandon said to her, “I love you,” as he opened the door to their room, which was covered in rose petals, with a display of chocolate covered strawberries and champagne. Dave Bruebeck played on the ipod. Thinking it must be a Valentine’s Day surprise, Caleigh

said something to that effect, but Brandon said, “That’s not all. Go look out the window.” She went over to the balcony and pulled back the blinds to look upon the words Marry Me written on the snowbank in pinecones.

People on the patio cheered and she was so excited she almost forgot to say yes!

Those pinecones became an inspiration for their big day, as well as rustic touches of burlap, lace and a relaxed country atmosphere. Having their reception in a barn felt as natural as could. The Chandler House, with its calming, welcoming, and natural vibe was a perfect venue for these two. They enhanced the rustic ambiance with a delicious display of handmade pies in lieu of wedding cake, and used pinecones as escort card holders and even in Caleigh’s bouquet.

Caleigh’s advice to future brides and grooms? “Don’t stress out and forget what you are doing. You are getting married. Getting married is a special moment between two people. All that really matters is that those two people are in the same place at the same time committing themselves to each other. Yes it would be great if everything was exactly the way you want it, perfect shoes, perfect flowers, perfect timing, whatever.

I remember our wedding being perfect - if anything wasn’t exactly how I wanted it to be, I truly don’t remember, it was the best day ever.”

Clean, dry lilac petals (preferably purple as they are very fragrant) Granulated sugar A jar and twine or ribbon Layer flowers and sugar in a jar. Let stand dark and cool for a few days, shake every now and then. Now your sugar is ready to use.

Lilacs not only smell incredible but are also edible. Making lilac sugar is super simple – just three ingredients! It’s a perfect way to preserve the smell of spring for months to come and also makes a perfect gift. Seal in small canning jars to give as wedding favors, or bridal shower favors. Or simply make a few Mason jar sized mixes and hand out to family.

Royal Icing (Decorates about 4 Dozen 3” Cookies) Confectioners Sugar 2 pounds (approx. 8 cups) Meringue Powder 10 tablespoons Water 3/4 cup Vanilla 1 teaspoon Salt 1 pinch

Orange Vanilla Spice Cookies (Makes about 2 dozen 3” Cookies) Butter, softened 1/2 pound (2 sticks) Sugar 1-3/4 cups Light agave nectar 1/4 cup Unbleached flour 4 cups Salt 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder 1-1/8 teaspoons Cardamom 2 teaspoons Orange Zest 1/2 each large naval orange Vanilla Bean, scraped 1/2 each Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon Eggs, room temperature 2 each Preheat oven to 350ºF.

11) Allow the icing to dry for another 4 hours before handling.

Fit mixer with paddle attachment.* Cream butter and sugar on med-high speed until light and fluffy.

Periodically stop mixer and scrape bowl. Add agave nectar and mix until combined.

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and cardamom in a separate mixing bowl. Use a whisk to combine ingredients. Set aside. Zest orange directly into butter and sugar mixture. Add vanilla bean seeds and vanilla extract. Mix on low until combined. Add one egg and mix on low until incorporated. Scrape bowl.

Add second egg and mix on low until incorporated.

Add flour, baking powder, salt and cardamom and mix on low.** Stop mixer and scrape bowl. Continue mixing until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.

Divide dough in half and roll each half to a 1” thick rectangle. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least one hour in refrigerator or freeze for later use.

Fit your stand mixer with the paddle attachment.

Place powdered sugar, meringue powder and salt in mixing bowl. Mix on low speed until combined. Add most of the water, holding back a few tablespoons. Add vanilla and mix on medium-low speed until ingredients are combined. Add more water if needed. Scrape bowl. Mix for 5 minutes on medium-low speed. Immediately cover icing in an air tight container. The icing will keep for up to 10 days in the refrigerator.

Remove dough from refrigerator and let soften slightly. Roll dough on floured parchment to 3/16” thick. Chill sheets for another half hour.

Cut out cookies and freeze for 15 minutes. Bake at 350ºF for 9-10 minutes or until the edges are a light golden brown. Rotate after 5 minutes.

Let cookies cool completely before decorating. * Use a hand mixer to cream the butter and sugar if you do not have a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. **Hand mixer users: Use the hand mixer only to incorporate the ingredients. Once incorporated, turn off the mixer and continue to form the dough by hand. Do not over mix.

There are six tree houses to choose from, all accessed via ladder, suspension bridge, or stairs. Sleep in a hand-crafted bed and open your windows to river and bird sounds. Eat a simple continental breakfast in the Main Lodge, sip tea or coffee offered in the afternoon, and enjoy a live show as part of the regular concert series. All the tree houses share shower and toilet facilities, though several do have incinerator toilets attached, for use “only in an emergency.”

The atmosphere may be rugged for some, but perhaps that’s part of the back-to-nature vibe.

While you might not have a toilet, there are hair dryers, toiletries, and an ipod docking station in each tree house. WIFI is available in the main lodge. You may
