Pretty not Perfect I have the privilege of looking through thousands of beautiful wedding photos each season and am honored by and grateful for all of the submissions I receive. Just as much as I enjoy breathtaking imagery, I also enjoy a good story, and so one of my favorite parts of running Sweet Violet Bride is reading the stories of how couples meet and fall in love, whether that be in their hometown, or halfway around the world.

In this issue you’ll also find natural beauty products to keep you rosy and glowing, the low-down on the best subscription boxes and green registries, an interview with Silk & Willow, and a sweet tutorial on how to do a bohemian halo braid. Plus, whip up some sourcream rhubarb cupcakes with baking-goddess Linda Lomelino, and swoon over some of the prettiest berry bouquets. Remember, focus on making your day special, not perfect. Enjoy!

We can’t help it; floral gowns are just so timelessly pretty when it comes to nature inspired weddings. You’d think we’d tire of them, but each designer interprets the beauty of blossoms in their own way. These four, in-particular, have caught our eye this year.

Tips on How to Get Healthy, Glowing Skin Natural skincare expert, Tata Harper says, “glowing skin is healthy skin, and it’s not necessarily things we do once in a while, but the things we do every single day.” She suggests incorporating the following into your daily ritual:

8

- Drink enough water (your skin is an organ that renews itself daily, and in order to do so properly must be sufficiently hydrated). - Use a daily cleanser that gently exfoliates and is detergent-free (soap-free) so that it doesn’t dehydrate the skin.

Autumn Reds

Sometimes the best accessory is a classic red lip, be it bold or subtle. I tried out more than 20 shades of red (all paraben-free) and think these are my favorites for fall. Timid about wearing a full-on bright red lip? Fill in your lips with a neutral liner and then apply a small amount of a red gloss over top. Muah. xo - NF

Bohemian Halo Braid

DIY

Tutorial + Photos

by

Abby Smith of

Twist Me Pretty We’re a little obsessed with braids, and Abby of Twist Me Pretty is an expert on the subject. Her tutorials on her blog and YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/twistmepretty) are some of our absolute favorites when it comes to everything hair. She kindly shared this bohemian halo braid tutorial with us and we think it is a beautiful way to wear your hair, whether you’re a boho bride with little flowers tucked into the braid, or a guest who wants a chic but fuss-free style to wear to a summer event. Flip the page for step-by-step instructions from Abby on how to get this look. And don’t miss treating yourself to her other tutorials at twistmepretty.com. sweetvioletbride.com | 25

DIY

Instructions: 1. You’re going to start out with a dutch braid — outer sections go under the middle. 2. Keep it close to your hair line and angle it towards your neck. 3. When you’ve braided it as far back as you can with the same hold, go ahead and switch up your hands. Remember where you are in your braid and move your hand furthest from the braid to the other side so you can start braiding up. 4. This might take a second to get use to — if you get lost, say the steps out loud and just go super slow. You are now braiding up instead of back. 5. When you run out of hair, do a three strand braid all the way to the ends. Secure with a clear elastic. 6-7. Pin anywhere that feels a little loose before pancaking (pulling to widen). 8. Pancake the braid and then tuck the ends under the braid. Spray with hairspray so it’s secure. 26 | sweetvioletbride.com

Spotlight

There is something so ethereal about silk ribbons enfolding the stems of a bouquet, and streaming out in the breeze. Many of the ribbons you’ve seen across the web and in print that adorn such bouquets are made by Silk & Willow. In the heart of Hudson Valley, New York, Shellie Pomeroy follows her bliss in creating these heirloom silk ribbons. From concept, to foraging for materials, to cooking out the color, she patiently and joyfully carries out the process of natural plant dyeing. These ribbons are even more alluring due to the fact that they are either biodegradable or can be easily re-used and recycled. After being captivated by the natural beauty of said ribbons we just had to learn more about this antiquated art and the woman behind Silk & Willow. You can also see more of these ribbons in the feature on page 58 of this issue.

Q&A with Shellie Pomeroy of Silk & Willow SVB: How and when did you fall in love with the art of dying silk ribbon? Tell us a bit about yourjourney to this craft.

SVB: Why natural dye and how does that effect your color process/choices?

Shellie: My journey into the art of plant dyeing silks is one that started many years ago when my daughters entered a nursery program at our local Waldorf School. When I walked into their classroom draped with naturally dyed silks, I was instantly enchanted. Over the years I have experimented with natural dye materials and fibers, creating many gifts and art pieces in my free time. After 10+ years of “hand-crafting” for the pure joy of it, I decided to leave my computer-based graphics career to design a business that would enable me to follow my passion full time.

Shellie: The colors created by natural dyes are unmatchable. Synthetic dyes are flat, but natural dyes create a living color that changes and adapts to it’s surroundings. The complex colors produced by natural dyes have a diversity of rich hues and shades yet they all work in harmony with each other. Color theory will confirm that colors evoke a physiological response. The reaction to natural colors is both calming and alluring. Our ribbons are infused with color that is rich in brilliance, yet easy on the eye. >> p. 31

As a designer I love to predict color trends, but as we move through the seasons I know my availability of certain plants and flowers will vary. Nature directs my inspiration for color. But, with a little alchemy, a single plant material can create a multitude of colors, tints and shades. SVB: What are some of the plants you use to dye silk? Shellie: I use a variety of plant materials for my dyeing. Many are from my garden, the roadside, friends, and local restaurants. If not gathered locally, they are sustainably sourced from ethical companies. My current favorite natural dye materials are avocado pits, walnut hulls, onion skins, and marigolds. These materials are gathered from a local restaurant, market, and school campus with 100-year-old walnut trees, and my garden. At least ten of our current colors are created with these materials. SVB: Do you see some colors trending more than others? Also do you have a personal favorite? Shellie: Our traditional colors, such as Antique White and Blush, are our most popular colors. While these colors are subtle, they

have a romantic feel that complements any bouquet. My favorite color changes regularly. Even after creating a color over and over, I always find new ways to love it. SVB: What are some of the ways you’ve seen brides use your plant-dyed silk? I see our ribbons as a special adornment with many purposes. Although mainly used on wedding bouquets and to wrap invitations, they are also used in marketing materials, styling, hair accessories, mixed media collages, jewelry, dress sashes, or simply to wrap a special gift. Silk is a strong and enduring material that can be used and re-used for years to come. SVB: Any advice for brides planning a natural wedding? Shellie: Planning any wedding can be a long and sometimes stressful process. When planning a natural wedding I would just say, “follow your instinct.” Have fun with the process of selecting details that represent who you are. If it doesn’t feel right to you, it probably isn’t right for the environment either. We are fortunate to have many options and resources available for creating your natural wedding.

Color story

Inspired by this model’s name and story (Satya literally means truth/ reality) this shoot incorporates the beauty, independence, and grace of the bohemian bride who journeys far but always finds her way home. Photographer Ashley Sawtelle envisions: This time she comes back to reconnect with her family to celebrate her marriage. She longs for the familiar sights and comforts of home, maybe as it were when she left to discover the world: including family artifacts, linens and her grandmother’s silver. Fresh botanicals dress the rooms that she once ran through growing up. Her family’s historic home provides the backdrop for the gathering. But her adventurous spirit is also drawn to the natural beauty that Boulder, Colorado has to offer. The rock formations that long predate the homes play to her bohemian spirit that gave her the courage to discover herself and in the process, introducing her to the love that she celebrates at this gathering.

Color story

Photographed in a greenhouse full of cacti and succulents in Russia, this look embodies the gentle nature, elegance, and strong spirit of freedom that is a bohemian beauty’s special magic. Model Angela, has gorgeous red hair and blue eyes – like rich desert rock meeting the sky. Stylist Elen White chose bronze, gold and cream makeup to emphasize her beauty. The look was inspired by the Alexander McQueen FW 14 runway show. It represented pastoral motives, light fabric, mysterious elegance, luminous skin and lips. A messy braid with a delicate sprig of pearls tucked in completes the look.

Glasshouse Organic

Color story

Berry toned florals, lush foliage, trailing passion vines, artichokes and gold skeleton leaves come together in this bridal shoot for an ethereal woodland look photographed at a glasshouse. The talented team that is Pearl & Godiva created this organic fairytale setting for real bride, Aine. Butter-soft canvas cloths and hand-dyed muslin embraced the tables, as well as gold mica sprinkled about like faerie dust. Exquisite calligraphy was lovingly hand-lettered to add richness and another layer to the design, with autumnal quotes and personal messages from Aine and her husband Ray. Hundreds of hand-made candles were lit, adding a delicate glow.

Ethereal Sands

54 | sweetvioletbride.com

Color story

The simplistic beauty and raw, natural elements of Great Sand Dunes National Park in Alamosa, Colorado inspired this tranquil photo shoot by Connie Whitlock. Elements like amethyst, unfinished wood, bone (for the silverware), linen, and silk ribbon carried the natural theme throughout the design. We especially love the unique details of little geodes incorporated into the organic bouquet, amethyst pieces tied to the flowing silk ribbon, wind-tousled hair, and neutral makeup. The invitation suite had torn edges with graceful calligraphy and watercolor accents in deep purple and amethyst hues. The beautiful cake had a white base layer with similar accents of painted purple and bronze. A loose fitting, minimally structured dress captured the movement of the wind and the hypnotizing light.

Atrium abloom 62 | sweetvioletbride.com

Color story

This styled shoot at The Atrium at Overton Square in Memphis, Tennessee was inspired by the Nouveau period, specifically the artwork of Alphonse Mucha. The Atrium’s white walls and tall arched ceilings were the perfect backdrop for this lush indoor garden party. Tones of green, white, and gold details accent the playful blush roses and orange ranunculus in the flowing fern bouquet. A pretty swing adorned with vines and vintage settees create a fusion of ethereal outdoors and a nostalgia for the late 19th century.

Color story

Among the gorgeous blossoms of a pear orchard east of the Cascade Mountains, soft spring shades of pink and ivory set the scene for this styled shoot. An enchanting ceremony arbor covered in blooms, floral crown of succulents, ranunculus, hellebore and vines, and mini peach pies for a rustic, moss-covered desert table are just a few of our favorite details. Vashon Island Cider Company provided some of their miniature Pear Hard Cider bottles that make for the cutest favors, to which this creative team tied hand-calligraphed thank you tags. Thousands of petals catching the light and branches holding the promise of fruit, creates the perfect backdrop for love.

Heidi + Paul Evergreen, Colorado 07-05-2014 Heidi and Paul’s ‘once upon a time’ began with a Mohawk. She was instantly smitten with Paul’s hair the first time they met in college and several years later they fittingly chose #itstartedwithamohawk as their wedding Instagram hashtag. Their fun, laidback celebration in the mountains showcased the beauty of Colorado and this couple’s unique personalities. “It was really important to us to show all our guests (who were mostly coming from out of town) how beautiful Colorado is and why we moved here from Ohio,” says Heidi. For their four-year anniversary, still new to Colorado, they decided to spend a long weekend hiking in Aspen. “We left early on a Saturday and drove most of the way to Aspen when we saw the road had seasonal closures. I was ready to turn around and head back to Denver, but little did I know Paul had other plans,” she says. By the time they made it they’d been on the road for six hours and were ready to get out and hike. They went straight to the Maroon Bells and hiked up to Crater Lake with their American Bulldog, Mattie. At the lake, with the beautiful scenery in the background they went to take a picture together. That’s when Heidi realized Paul was holding the most beautiful ring in his hand. “We couldn’t have been happier

and Paul couldn’t have picked a more beautiful setting to propose.” Their nontraditional details represented who they are as a couple and the inspiration began with the most beautiful rustic barn in Evergreen. They had a food truck, a gelato cart, mismatched vintage clothing, yard games, and lots of dancing and cocktails! Fresh coral, blush, and mint colors played throughout the floral design and attire. Heidi’s brother was her “Man of Honor,” and one of their best friends, Kyle, was their officiant. Of course, they couldn’t get married without their dog Mattie there as their flower girl. She danced the night away too, and even got sliders from the food truck for dinner! “The most memorable moment for me was the actual ceremony,” says Heidi. “Paul and I had already done a first look beforehand, but I was still filled with excitement and nerves as I walked down the aisle with my dad. Kyle wrote the entire ceremony and no one had any idea what he had written. My favorite part was the fact that he went to both of our parents and asked them for advice on marriage, which he incorporated into the ceremony. We then exchanged vows that we had written.”

Cassi + Christopher Knoxville Botanical Garden, Tennessee 09-13-2014 Cassi and Chris have charmed our fairytale-hungry hearts with their storybook wedding. Set at the Knoxville Botanical Garden, their day was full of romantic details reflective of their love story and Cassi’s love of Disney. Speaking of which, Chris’s proposal makes us want to watch the classics all over again. “I was completely caught off guard,” says Cassi. “He rented out an entire historic theatre in downtown Nashville called The Belcourt. He had them put Cassi and Chris in all of the little marquees throughout the theatre and had them play us one of my favorite Disney movies, Aladdin. After the movie ended he got down on one knee in the theatre and asked me to start ‘a whole new world’ with him. I said yes and then we started planning our fairytale wedding!” Everything from Cassi’s flowing blush gown and princess tresses to the unique woodland bridesmaid “bouquets” and giant storybook ceremony backdrop have a magical quality that most brides only dream of. But these two made it a reality. “I’ve always felt like our relationship was too good to be true and that he was my perfect fairytale romance so I definitely had to incorporate Disney love stories and fairytales into our wedding,” says Cassi.

The book backdrop was created in a garage by the team at Whimsical Gatherings from foam insulation board, foam slab, velvet, muslin, gold paint, canvas, and lots of glue and duct tape! It was then painted by their head designer, Colby West with help on graphics by Jude Staunton. It took two days for them to install and many months of designing and planning with the bride. They also had Disney love quotes placed on banners throughout the wedding, skeleton key place cards, and an enchanting woodland table at the dinner reception. The long wooden table’s center was outfitted in moss, books, glass cloches, candlelight, and little woodland animal figurines – deer, rabbits, owls, etc. When asked what advice she has for other couples, Cassi says “I would just advise that you give yourself plenty of time to plan and enjoy the process. Everything flies by so fast and I’m so glad that we gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy it all and not stress so much. I would also suggest that, although this is your wedding day, you think about your guests as well. Splurge a little on a wedding planner and a team to setup/teardown so that your guests can enjoy the day and not have to worry about working while they are there.”

Mackenzie + Aaron Moab / Lindon, Utah 05-24-2014 Mackenzie and Aaron aren’t your typical love story though you might say they certainly had their head in the clouds. These two skydivers literally fell in love in the sky. “I spend my weekends jumping at Skydive Utah and Aaron moved from North Carolina to Utah and took a job as a tandem instructor there,” says Mackenzie. “It’s a pretty tightknit community and the people you jump with inevitably become close friends.” Two peas in a pod, or rather two birds of a feather, Mackenzie reflects on their engagement. “It was Christmas Eve, and we were exchanging gifts. We exchanged our first gifts, and we had each gotten a book for the other. We exchanged a second gift and to our surprise we had each gotten the other a mug. We laughed over the fact that we were thinking so similarly. My last gift for him was a watch. He continued the pattern by getting me jewelry also, and gave me my last gift on his knee, a ring.” Because flight was what brought them together, they wanted to represent it in the details of their wedding and used feathers instead of flowers for the boutonnieres and at every place setting.

The simple, free-spirited details went perfectly with the natural, windswept landscape of southern Utah. Even Mackenzie’s gorgeous BHLDN gown seemed prone to dance with the wind. They chose to have their pre-wedding photos done in Moab against the natural backdrop of expansive red rocks. While there, they collected stones that were used in their centerpieces. The rich rosy rocks, glowing sunlight, and ever-present breeze seemed as much a guest as any on their big day. Mackenzie wore two different flower crowns, one specifically for the ceremony to match her bouquet in shades of white, peach, and deep ruby red. She also wore earrings that are a family heirloom – her ‘something old.’ The natural beauty of their wedding venue, at Wadley Farms, also provided a charming ambiance that didn’t require extensive embellishment. “I am grateful that I let the natural beauty of the venue stand on its own,” says Mackenzie. “It was so comfortable and intimate and gorgeous. Everything about the venue just led to the beauty of the day.”

Lindsey + Kevin Memphis, Tennessee 09-14-2013 Lindsey and Kevin are a fun and extroverted couple who had their wedding at a place most kids would only dream of having the party of a lifetime – at the zoo. “We questioned the zoo venue at times, but it was beautiful once it was all set up,” says Lindsey. The candles and ceremony on the rocks were spectacular – and perfectly timed at sunset with howling wolves! The polar bear did a dance for us during cocktail hour, and my bouquet and the flowers were STUNNING.” Their whimsical day has us smiling, as does the ironic story of how they met. They both grew up in Marietta, GA where they shopped at the same grocery store, attended the same YoungLife camps, went to the same public library. Yet they never crossed paths as they attended rival high schools. Then Kevin moved to Memphis in January of 2011 for his job with an investment banking firm, where Lindsey had been working since summer of 2007. “We officially first started talking via email, as that’s how we were introduced (a friend on Kevin’s floor asked me to email him and welcome him to the company and Memphis since I was from Kevin’s same hometown). We emailed back and forth from January to March, never meeting for one reason or another. We finally met

for the first time over drinks at Flight Restaurant on April 21, 2011. I really didn’t want to date anyone at the time, so I put up all kinds of walls. Kevin asked me to a Grizzlies playoff game, a concert at Live in the Garden and a Redbirds game, and I turned down all three! Finally two days before the Redbirds game, I asked if the ticket was still available. He replied “I’ll pick you up noon.” That was Labor Day 2011, and we went on three more dates that week! I pretty much knew within a month that I would spend my life with him. I tell him all the time how grateful I am that he stuck around and didn’t give up on me. He told me the Redbirds game was my last shot – thank goodness I changed my mind!” As they both love the outdoors, animals, adventures, great food and wine, and random dance parties (“We don’t really have a song but will dance to pretty much anything,” Lindsey says), the Memphis zoo turned out to be the perfect venue for a combination of whimsy, natural elegance, and plenty of dancing. “We loved having friends and family, from all over the country, break it down on the dance floor with us. We will never forget what a memorable night it was!”

Katie + Tom Johnsbury, Vermont 07-12-2014 Katie and Tom, who met when at university, planned their beautiful Vermont destination wedding while living in Sweden and California. Talk about being organized! “I’m from California and Tom is from England,” says Katie. “So we had decided early on that we wanted a destination wedding, in particular, New England, thinking it was the perfect blend of our two cultures. Plus it was (somewhat) half way for both families. I fell in love early on with rustic/barn weddings and when I came across the Alerin Barn knew immediately it was the most idyllic spot. That was truly, the basis of all my inspiration.” At the time they planned their wedding, Katie and Tom were in Sweden where Tom was earning a master’s degree, so Katie scheduled phone calls with her mom in California and vendors from Vermont at odd hours. Katie chose corals and gold colors which went perfectly with the natural green backdrop and the neutral tones of the barn. An elegant but also relaxed atmosphere is very much what the Alerin Barn encompasses. They served their guests stone-baked pizza and Ben & Jerry’s at their welcome dinner the night before, and ribs, burgers, mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob for the wedding dinner. A

country-chic naked cake, pies, and s’mores was served for dessert. “We brought in elegant touches with flowers, candle-lit lanterns, gorgeous linens on the tables, and because of my love for prints, Lilly-Pulitzer-inspired napkins my amazing mom made for all 60 guests from six different fabrics we chose.” They also used that same idea when creating the program booklets, petal cones, and seating arrangements. Another favorite touch, especially of the guests, was the guest book. They purchased a Polaroid camera and asked guests to snap a selfie and put it next to their entry in the guestbook. “So much fun looking back on all our photos!” Katie’s main advice to other couples in the planning process: give yourself enough time. “We got engaged in January and could have very well planned a perfectly lovely wedding for that summer, however we decided to give ourselves one and a half years to plan, I was able to book my first choice in vendors including the amazing florist, photographer, caterer and venue (who were all booked up) and as I said they really made the difference. A huge weight was then off my shoulders and I was able to really focus on the small creative details that I added on throughout the year.”

Katie + Judge Athens, Georgia 11-22-2014 Katie and Judge met in college when a mutual friend introduced them, but Katie says it wasn’t love-at-first-sight. “He was a strength and conditioning coach for the UGA football team during my Junior year, and I was not one to go for athletes. I didn’t think Judge was my type, as he often was wearing football work-out gear. We became the closest of friends though,” says Katie. A year later when she saw him all dressed up for an event they attended together, things changed. “My heart shifted when he wore dress pants instead of sweat pants. From there, the fireworks began.” Katie envisioned her wedding to be full of classic, southern style, but with a woodsy atmosphere. Seeing the beauty in simplicity, she sought out natural, antique details, and looked for a venue in North Georgia (where she had lived) that hadn’t seen many couples tie the knot. “I wanted to be married in a holy space where not many are married today. For some reason, I was adverse to the pre-packaged marriage venues that feel like nuptial factories and didn’t want to be wed in a spot that a lot of people knew about,” says Katie. The sanctuary of Watkinsville, which is now a private residence, provided

the perfect spot. The church was built in the 1800s and has 17-foot ceilings and large windows in the back that bring in beautiful natural light. The lovely couple who own and live in the space, also sometimes act as florists and so the room is often used as a greenhouse for plants in the fall and winter. Katie and Tom were able to use some of the greenery for the ceremony – an easy space to bring the outside in. Most details were DIY. They used a lot of seeded eucalyptus, Calla Lilies, branches, gold pinecones, orange berries and white roses. “I wanted it to feel as if any of the materials we used could have been gathered outside,” says Katie. She wore her grandmother’s gold locket, and so all the accents down to the chargers were a muted gold. One of the bride’s best friends, Pete Hutchison, made the wedding cake from scratch and worked with their florist to make sure all the details of the cake lined up with the theme. A local bluegrass band played during their reception at the State Botanical Gardens in Athens, where Katie and Judge greeted guests at the door with hot cider and happy hearts.

Berry Bouquets For a delicious addition to your wedding bouquet, consider including berries in your design. Not only do these beauties add a wild and organic look to your bouquet, but they’re great for textural detail and seasonal panache. Summer and autumn is the perfect time to use freshly foraged berries such as blackberries, raspberries, or even rose hips (yes, those are berries). But we also love the idea of beautiful strawberries, as in the bouquet pictured at left, or a variety of multistemmed round berries such as hypericum and pepperberry which are typically a warm pink, or red color. Of course berries associated with the winter season (snowberry, winterberry) are always a pretty choice for cooler temps. We hope you’re inspired by these berry bouquets! - NF
