Four Reasons Why Engine Fails and Tips to Restore Its Power Did you notice that your car’s engine is making half the horsepower, recently? And you are wondering what has happened with it? To detect the real problem, you have to understand that your gasoline engine needs certain things – air, fuel, compression and sparks – to generate maximum horsepower, if any one of them fails, so does your engine. In this post, we have taken each one of these engine’s components individually to give you an insight into their function and provided tips to keep them in top shape. Issue – Clogged Air filters (Air) Over the miles, air filters get clogged up with debris. And a clogged up air filter compels the engine to work harder than usual to get in air and it also restricts the maximum amount of air flow in. This means your engines get less air to generate enough power. In other words, if the air filters are clogged up with grimes and debris, they do affect airflow, thereby decreasing the overall performance of the engine. This condition forces engine to work harder to push out exhaust gases, which hinders its performance. Consistent presence of exhaust gases gradually starts affecting other elements of the engine, such as catalytic converters. They can clog up on the engine due to improper air/fuel mixture, which makes the fuel additives reacting within the block. Solution - Replace worn out air filters So it is very important for you to either change or clean the air filters whenever they get clogged up in order to keep the engine running in a good condition. Issue – clogged up or worn out fuel injectors and fuel pumps (Fuel) Before going deep in these topics, you have to understand that anything restricting fuel from entering a cylinder in the engine causes loss of power. Fuel Injectors The clogged fuel injector can cause several other problems. This component gets clogged up due to deposits build up from heat soak or poor fuel, causing O2 sensors to read a lean mixture. And more fuel will be needed to compensate. This situation may misfire if the injectors are not able to inject enough fuel. Fuel Pumps Actually, fuel pumps can wear out over the time, due to which they start providing fuel at lower pressure and begin to struggle to pump out fuel at higher pressure. So if you figure out that your car loses power as you rev up the engine to get past the uphill or sputters, it’s a major indication to worn out pumps. Solution – Regular maintenance To avoid such situation in a long run, ensure proper maintenance of these components and if damages are beyond repairing, replace the fuel pumps immediately.
