elcome to the April issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. Events in the world as we go to press are moving in the direction of uncharted territory. For the first time in 22 years of SouthWest Horse Trader, this issue contains zero Event Calendar listings. Never in my lifetime would I ever see the day when all events in one month have been cancelled. Itching to show? Check out the Virtual Horse Shows that are flooding social media. For those lucky enough to ride, this is one way to keep showing. Who would ever think that a flu called coronavirus would changed everything about how we live in a matter of weeks. THANK YOU I cannot thank my advertisers enough! Please go to page 20 and read the advertiser’s index and buy products from these companies! Not only did these customers keep their advertising in this issue, they reserved multiple issues. I have also had numerous companies step up for next month with multiple month commitments. Words cannot express the gratitude to these customers who are not only supporting this magazine, but my printer and distribution house. We are all SMALL businesses and we are so humble. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! w

Champions Crowned at The American Rodeo at AT&T Stadium 2.4 million paid out in 2 days in Texas

The American Rodeo finals made dreams come true yet again this evening at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The 2020 champions are walking away with pride and impressive payouts after another fierce competition. “We have had seven years and seven amazing rodeos,” said Randy Bernard, CEO of RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo. “I truly believe The American Rodeo has been a game-changer for professional rodeo and cowboys. We have changed many lives since 2014 and the event just keeps getting better.“ 2016 The American Rodeo’s Bareback champion Kaycee Field knew he made a good ride when he dismounted after the short go. He claimed $100,000 and his second win at AT&T Stadium on VIGIL with a 93 point score. Wilburton, Okla.’s Kaycee Hollingback roped countless calves to earn her $100,000 payout. For the second year, the Breakaway Roping was one of the event highlights as the ladies continue to excel in the sport. Twelve-time WNFR qualifier Luke Brown backed in the box with AQHA world champion Joseph Harrison for the team’s first time together in AT&T Stadium. The two walked away with $100,000 after roping in a short 4.3 seconds. PRCA veteran steer wrestler and 2018 The American Rodeo champion Matt Reeves took the victory lap in the Polaris Ranger after three outstanding runs in the last two days. Texas’ own Wyatt Casper, 2016 college champion and current PRCA world-standing leader, was the first to earn a share of the million dollar payout, riding his 36th straight horse of the 2020 season in the Saddle Bronc. There was a man on a mission in the Tie Down Roping, who continued to dominate and went on to win his share of the $1 million. 2018 national high school finals champion and New Mexico’s own Shad Mayfield walked away with $600,000 after tying his final calf in 7.75 seconds. Multiple-time NRF qualifier Stevi Hillman made it to The American Rodeo short go for the first time in Barrel Racing. She rode her go-to horse TRUCK with a time of 15.405. The American Rodeo crowned co-champions for the first time ever in Bull Riding. 2019’s winner Joao Ricardo Vieira and multiple-time world champion Sage Kimzey tied to take home $62,500 each. 6

New Mexico Appaloosa Club Established in 1961, the New Mexico Appaloosa Horse Club is one of the most unique non-profit equine organizations in the state and one of the oldest chartered regional clubs of the Appaloosa Horse Club. Throughout each year, we provide show opportunities and other activities for our members and other equestrians. We hold monthly board meetings at IHOP at I-40 and Montano Blvd on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. All members are encouraged to attend, and anyone with interest in the club is welcome! Our next meeting is April 7th. NMApHC members were out in force at the February and March training shows held by NM Buckskin (NMBHA) in Bosque Farms. Fun was had and ribbons were won, and we all honed our skills showing against Buckskins, Pintos, Paints, Quarter Horses, Arabians, and other breeds. We hope to see more Appies at the April 19th NMBHA training show! NMApHC Vice President Patty Wilber was the volunteer judge for trail classes at the Walkin N Circles Ranch fun show on Feb 15th. Walkin N Circles Ranch is the home of New Mexico Horse Rescue, and proceeds from this show went to help the many horses in their care. We recently put out a survey using SurveyMonkey. com to learn more about your experience with our club. The results are in, and while we didn’t get as many respondents as we hoped for, we did get some good feedback. Some survey highlights: Sixty-two percent of respondents were either Very Satisfied or Somewhat Satisfied with their membership experience. One respondent was Somewhat Dissatisfied, which is disappointing. If you are dissatisfied, please talk to any board member about your concerns. Communications: We got lots of requests for more varied communications. Our Facebook page is wellliked, but we can do better by emailing our members, also. We asked about activities other than showing that people would like to see offered. The most popular answers were clinics (75%) and organized trail rides (50%). The Year End Awards Program is in the process of being revamped for 2020. Look for updates soon! Remember, to be eligible for year-end awards, you must be a current member of NMApHC before your points will count. See our website at www.nmaphc.info/ for information about upcoming shows, club news, and awards. We also have a busy Facebook page www.facebook.com/ groups/212229456586/. We are now on Instagram! Competitive Trail News In The SouthWest TRAIL COMPETITIONS CANCELLED THROUGH MAY

With Covid-19 wreaking havoc across the globe, competitive trail organizations in the southwest took the only option available and cancelled all events through May. The North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC), the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) and the Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC) have cancelled rides in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas in April. The good news is that riding and conditioning horses does not fall under the restrictions set forth by local and federal governments, although many public venues such as state and national parks are closed for all purposes. Now is a good time to practice ground manners and improve on the horse’s training foundation, developing three solid gaits and basic lateral movements that will improve performance on the trail when competitions resume. The trail organizations are hopeful that cancelled events will be rescheduled later in the year. Check FaceBook pages and websites for the latest information. w

THIRTEENTH 7IL SAMPER A SUCCESS Since 2006, the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) has hosted a competitive trail ride at 7IL Trails in Cat Spring, Texas and this year was no different. More than 40 horse and rider teams traversed up to 50 miles on the ranch trails that feature barefoot-friendly terrain. Fran Muench and Giacomo won the Open Division Sweepstakes award and Alanna Sommer and Shade won the Competitive Pleasure Sweepstakes. Cynthia Leatherwood and Big Cat earned top honors in the Novice division. “We were delighted with the turn-out, the quality of the competitors and, of course, the perfect weather,” said Doanna Daniel, ride manager. “This ranch is a perfect location for this time of year. We are looking forward to next March already!” Judges for the event were Keri Riddick, DVM of Georgia and Kathy Shanor of Tennessee. 7IL Trails remains open to the public for riding during the Covid-19 crisis. Precautions are taken to protect riders. More information can be found on the 7IL website or FaceBook page. w April 2020 SouthWest Horse Trader

NRHA Three-Million Dollar Sire Nu Chex To Cash Passes On March 14 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Three Million Dollar Sire Nu Chex To Cash (NU Cash x Amarilla Chex) passed away. At 30 years old, Nu Chex To Cash’s contributions to the reining industry can’t be denied. Before entering the breeding shed, “Chex” built himself a reputation as a big stopper in the show pen. Born in April 1990, Chex was shown from 1993 to 2002. With Jessicah Keller at the reins, the pair won world championships in the Intermediate and Limited Open divisions. They were also the reserve champions in the freestyle reining at the 2002 All American Quarter Horse Congress. Showing his versatility and athletic ability, Chex was the first horse to nab the AQHA High Point awards in both the reining and working cow horse in the same year. For the last 25 years, Chex spent his life at Hilldale Farm raising kids and foals alike. The earner of more than $57,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings (LTEs), Chex found his perfect match in NRHA Million Dollar Dam and Hall of Famer Snip O Gun. The two produced

some of the greats, including Hot Smokin Chex, Chexmaster, and Big Chex To Cash. Inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2010, Chex is best known for siring NRHA Eleven Million Dollar Sire Wimpys Little Step (out of Leolita Step). Wimpys Little Step went on to be the 2002 NRHA Futurity Open Level (L)4 Champion as well as the All American Quarter Horse Congress freestyle champion. Both titles were achieved with NRHA Six Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida. The iconic palomino set the standard for throwing offspring with ideal conformation, athleticism, and a mind comparable to few others. He also sired household name Lil Joe Cash (out of RS Lilly Starlight) who was the 2011 NRHA Futurity Open L4 Champion with NRHA Five Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani aboard. “Joe” has earned more than $279,000 in NRHA LTE. w
