WAITING OUR TURN

Record number of AQHA exhibitors competed at the OKC Fairgrounds to vie for the AQHA’s coveted golden globes and more than $2.2 million in purse and prizes. If you were unable to join us in Oklahoma City, or missed the free live webcast, presented by Farnam, be sure to check out the results and winning runs at www.aqha.com/worldshow. That’s a wrap on the largest AQHA World Show in history! During the Farnam AQHA World Championship Show; AQHA Select World Championship Show, presented by Adequan®; AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals; and the Adequan® Level 2 and Nutrena Level 1 championships, more than 7,500 entries, 2,100 exhibitors and 2,700 horses competed for nearly 150 Farnam AQHA and Adequan® Select world championships, and nearly 150 Adequan® Level 2, Nutrena Level 1 and AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals championships. The event, which was November 2-21 at the OKC Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, was held in accordance with local, state, and federal coronavirus mandates and was closed to the general public. The most anticipated awards of the event were presented to the Farnam AQHA Superhorse, AQHA All-Around Amateur, AQHA Select All-Around Amateur, OKC Leading Owner, The American Quarter Horse Journal Reserve Leading Owner and the top AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horses at the show. This year’s show featured a variety of exciting events: $151,000-added Halter Bonanza, courtesy of 10-year cumulative breeders Steve and Kathy Headley, 30year cumulative breeder Linda Gordon and 30-year cumulative breeders Terry and Tammy Bradshaw; $50,000 Pleasure Versatility Challenge, brought to you by Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses; $25,000 open and amateur working western rail classes, sponsored by Headley Quarter Horses; and the $15,000 Western Pleasure Challenge; and $5,000 Zimeta™ 3-yo western pleasure stakes. AQHA also added four additional stakes classes to the show - working hunter under saddle, ranch trail, western dressage and dressage. AQHA Professional Horsemen volunteered their time to give 15 free Ride the Pattern clinics, presented by Nutrena. These clinics gave exhibitors and spectators the perfect opportunity to learn how AQHA Professional Horsemen would approach a specific class or pattern at the show. Thanks in part to Nutrena’s generosity to match the amount donated at the Ride the Pattern clinics, the Professional Horsemen’s Crisis Fund raised more than $12,000. The AQHA Professional Horsemen also hosted an online auction, which raised more than $31,000 for the Professional Horsemen Crisis Fund. w 6

By Sherri Mell, 2X Hall of Fame Cowgirl December 2020 is upon us and the meaning of the NFR has changed this year to really go down in Cowboy History Books! The Women’s World Finals held in Waco, Texas in November was exciting with Barrel Racing for 4 days and roping for 2 days. I was blessed to be a part of it, competing in and picking up 3 checks in the tie down calf roping go rounds and World Finals Average at my 38th WPRA Finals. The WPRA rodeos have evolved through the years from a full rodeo complete with Rough stock and Timed events to just timed events, as we know it today. Cowgirls competed in Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Tie Down Calf Roping and Breakaway Roping. Over the years, our WPRA Finals have been held in California, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. For the 2020 Women’s World Finals, 17X WPRA World Champion, JJ Hampton was hot on the trail for her 18th WPRA World Championship by coming into the Women’s World Finals leading the pack of the top 15 in the Breakaway Calf Roping. After leading the Texas Cowgirls into the arena in the Grand Entry carrying the Texas Flag, JJ went to work in the roping pen in both the Team Roping and Breakaway Roping. She was able to hold her spot on the Leaderboard. A big Congratulations goes to JJ as she picked up her 18th WPRA World Championship! This WPRA World Title came exactly 20 years from her last one,

Morgan horse exhibitors would probably agree that one of the few highlights of 2020 was the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show that was held October 10-17th at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in World Champion Carriage Liz Oklahoma City. Hors- Goldmann & Sutton Remembrance es and exhibitors from GCH with Dallas Bolen coast to coast made the annual trek to meet up with the best of the best. For some, it was the only show they had attended this year. But show or no shows, trainers, riders and their mounts had done their homework and were ready to make their mark in OKC! The excitement and positivity were evident from the moment the trucks and trailers entered the fairgrounds. The Grand National Show Committee and Show Staff had done their due diligence for 2020 and were prepared to host the show, following the COVID-19 guidelines and protocol set in place by the state of Oklahoma, the OKC Fairgrounds, and USEF. Waivers were signed, masks were mandated, social distancing guidelines were followed, and temperatures were monitored to help make the show as safe as possible for all exhibitors. The show was once again expertly managed by Matt Kwapich and his incredible team who literally worked around the clock to make sure every detail was addressed for the show to run smoothly. Betsy Wallen served as the 2020 Show Chairman who, along with the entire Grand National Show Committee, worked tirelessly all year and during the show to bring it to fruition. In the Show Office, Peggy Hatfield, Kelly McFaul and their team greeted exhibitors, solved problems and handed out numbers and exhibitor bags stuffed full of goodies provided by MGN Corporate sponsors. And new this year, exhibitors had to make an appointment online to check in to limit overcrowding. This ended up being a smooth and very efficient way to check in all exhibitors that no doubt will be used again in the future! Throughout the duration of the show, the atmosphere on the show grounds was amazing! People were so thrilled to attend the show. Those that could not attend because of COVID restrictions, were able to tune into the free live feed to catch all the action in real time. And over the Samantha course of the week, more than 850 horses stepped Smith into four show arenas, and the quality was superb. Trainers and riders had definitely done their homework during quarantine. Congratulations to In Hand World Champions Sand Ridge Zinger, VVM Another Dream, and Merriehill After Hours. Eric Antman led the multi titled Merriehill After Hours for new owners Afterhours LLC to both the Senior and World titles. While Phil Fountain took the lead with 2019 World Champion VVM Another Dream, adding two more world titles in 2020, winning both the Senior and World Champion Mare honors for Vegas Valley Morgans. Tim Roesink led Sand Ridge Zinger, who earned Junior World Champion Gelding honors and World Champion returned to capture the World Gelding title for own- Stallion Merrieer Earl Yoder. hill After Hours Pleasure World Champion highlights include GCH with Logan Antman Continued on page 12

I called Caroline (Cavallo) and told her I had found a horse for her.” “We didn’t put any pressure on her, it just sort of came to her,” Blake said. “So we went ahead and entered the PVC, not know for sure that she would even show in it.” “She was 100 percent ready,” Blake said. “She kept a great attitude through the entire event tonight.” For the win, Caroline took home a check for $10,000. w

The Western Pleasure Challenge was broken out into a Level 2 and a Level 3 exhibitor eligible series. It was mandatory for each exhibitor to enter the Zimeta™ 3-yearold western pleasure stakes class, which was held on the last day of the show. Exhibitors then selected up to two additional and unique horses from their respective open Level 2 or open Level 3 AQHA 2-year-old western pleasure, junior western pleasure or senior western pleasure entries. From the placings of each respective finals class, the total Farnam AQHA World placing matrix points earned from an exhibitor’s three classes will be totaled and the Western Pleasure Challenge Champion Exhibitor will be named. Kyle Dougherty and If It Aint Dixie got the win in Level 2 Zimeta 3-year-old western pleasure class for owner Beckey Schooler of Delta, Ohio. Kyle took home a check for $1,220. The class paid through 10th place. Creating the Level 2 Zimeta™ 3-year-old western pleasure stakes also resulted in the addition of a Level 2 2-year-old western pleasure class. That class was won by My Dad Is The Best and Lauren Louw of Jamestown, Ohio. Brian Ale of Purcell, Oklahoma, won the Level 2 Western Pleasure Challenge on Son Of A Machine in the Level 2 3-yo western pleasure class, Straight Up Lazy in Level 2 2-yo western pleasure and Gorgeousnthemoonlite in the Level 2 jr western pleasure. For his effort, Brian won $3,000. “For the first time showing at the World Show, I think I had a good show,” Brian said. “I think it was a good opportunity for people who haven’t been here yet and showed. It gives an incentive so that you don’t have to compete against all of the top guys. You have a chance to show your horse, and it feels like you have a chance.” In the Level 2, Kyle Dougherty and If It Aint Dixie also won $1,250 in the O3 Equine Omega Complete competition for an exhibitor who has not placed in the top 10 at a previous AQHA World Show. Melissa Jones and Sheza Good Machine won $1,250 for a horse that has not earned more than $5,000 as of August 1, 2020. The Level 3 Zimeta 3-year-old western pleasure stakes class was won by Jay Starnes and Never Have I Ever, for owner Dakota Andrie of Franklinville, New Jersey. For the win, Jay also took home a check for $1,220, and the class paid through 10th place.. Aaron Moses won the Level 3 Western Pleasure Challenge riding Isthatcoolwithyou in Level 3 2-yo western pleasure, Made Ya Look in Level 3 3-yo western pleasure and Moonrageous in Level 3 junior western pleasure. The overall win earned Aaron $3,000. In the Level 3 O3 Equine Omega Complete competition, Mike Hachtel and The Best Principles won $1,250 for having not placed in the top 10 at a previous AQHA World Show. Bred Horses

Metallic Tracks & Bill Carter Four horses earned special awards as they joined the largest group of exhibitors and horses ever at the AQHA World Shows at OKC Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City November 2-21. Those four horses were AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horses, and in addition to the awards they won at this prestigious event, they earned special awards as the Top Ranching Heritage-Bred horse in their division. This recognition comes with a specially designed trophy and a $250 cash prize to both the owner and the breeder. The AQHA Ranching Heritage program highlights ranches that are certified as AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders. These working cattle ranches produce quality horses needed to work on the ranch. The program is designed to showcase the qualities of a working ranch horse by recognizing the top Ranching Heritage-bred horses competing at major events. The awards are given to the top-placing Ranching Heritage-bred horse in each division, with the tie-breaker going to the horse that defeats the most horses. Anyone can show these horses, which are eligible for special events such as AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges. This year, these four horses earned Top Ranching Heritage-Bred awards: • Select: Metallic Tracks, 2016 red roan gelding, Metallic Cat X Love Tracker; bred by Cowan Select Horses, Havre, MT; owned and shown by Bill Carter of Mounds, OK. Harvest H/J Show

Strongest class: It depends on the horse, but dressage is definitely my strongest. As a trainer, I would say helping riders with their self-confidence is my biggest strength and my biggest strength in the saddle is helping horses with their self-confidence. Weakest: Freestyles are my weakest, which is why I always have my mom and Black Star Sport Horses head trainer Lisa Blackmon, help me prepare for freestyles. She’s so good at them! Most proud show moment: My world titles! I won my first world title on my Friesian horse Tjitte and the second recently at the Morgan Grand Nationals & World Show. Oh, and I beat my dad (trainer Jackie Blackmon) at an in-hand class once! That was my first time showing against him. We had a total of six horses in that one class. My dad showed five and I showed one, St. Simmon, whom I later won the USEF National Seat Medal Championship with. I ended up winning the class against my dad! I was thirteen years old when that happened and it still makes me smile. Moment I would like to redo: In 2008, I went to the Festival of Champions. I was in the top twelve

young riders in the United States and I went off course, forgetting the halt and rein back, putting me in fourth place. Because of that moment, I now study a test so much that at any point in time, I can pick up where I left off. Role Model(s): Definitely my mom, Lisa Blackmon. Not only is she a great trainer but also a great businesswoman. She’s a supportive trainer and coach and she’s not afraid to push people to be their absolute best, while never pushing the horses too far. How has Covid affected your show season?: It gave us a lot of time in the beginning to stay home and continue training. It was difficult cramming an entire show season into four months, but I’m so glad that I got to go out and see people (from a distance) at shows. It was sad to not have the competitors parties and really spend time with our show friends, but we’re still grateful that we got to show at all. Words of Advice to amateurs: Amateurs need to continue training, and not just with trainers, but also studying off the horse. Never stop learning. Find trainers with good credentials and those you click with personality wise. That will make a huge difference! Walk through the barn and look at the horses: are they happy? Are they healthy? Is there turnout? What does the hay look like? You want a trainer who really cares about the wellbeing of their horses, not just the show results. w

Arabian Youth/Mid-Season National

2020 Youth and Mid Summer Arabian and Half Arabian National Championship Horse Show was a Hit! The 2020 Youth and Mid-Summer Arabian and Half Arabian National Championship Horse Show wrapped up in Oklahoma City, OK July 29. This show boasted over 1,200 horses and 3,000 entries. Exhibitors were excited to show with new competition and a wide variety of classes including Western Dressage, Hunter Pleasure, Reining, Sport Horse Under Saddle to Ranch Riding, Park, and many more! While this year looked a bit different due to new COVID-19 protocols, exhibitors still had fun with a few socially distanced Ice Cream Socials, the annual Graduating Youth Ceremony, the Dog Costume Contest, the Youth Stick Horse Contest, and Lucky Pony deliveries. In addition, the AHYA Convention was held online this year and resulted in the election of a new AHYA Executive Board. Brooke Backlund was elected as the 2020-2021 AHYA President, while Grace Smith will take the 2020-2021 Vice President position. We also saw a large influx of firsttime exhibitors at Youth and Mid-Summer Nationals who received a green ribbon to commemorate their first experience at a national show. Due to COVID-19 the firsttime exhibitor photo was moved online, giving exhibitors the opportunity to take a photo with their ribbon and post it to social media using the hashtag #FirstTimeExhibitor. AHA then reposted the photos to our social media pages to honor all of our first-

time exhibitors at Youth and Mid-Summer Nationals. AHA also gathered new Judge’s Perspective videos judged by Darrell Bilke, Ann Judge, and Dede Bisch. We covered Reining, Ranch Riding, and Saddle Seat Equitation. These videos break down championship rides throughout the show by the judge’s that scored these championship runs. Throughout the week, AHA captured behind the scenes photos and stories of the show and its exhibitors. Make sure to check out the AHA Facebook page to view the photos and videos and our Youtube page to view all the latest Judge’s Perspective videos. definitely a History making win! In 2000, during the WPRA Finals held at the Cowtown Coliseum at the Ft. Worth Stockyards, I witnessed my traveling companion and greatest Breakaway roper I’ve ever seen win her second WPRA All Around Title at the Women’s National Finals Rodeo. Back then, Featherlite Trailers sponsored the AllAround Trailer for 3 years in a row. JJ Hampton won it two years in a row in 1999 and 2000 and Tami Herbert won the 3rd one. After JJ won her second one in 2000, I asked her what she was going to do with the other one. JJ made a call to Featherlite to make arrangements. After 20 years, I’m still pulling the first trailer ever given by Featherlite to the WPRA for the Women’s Pro Rodeo Finals. The PRCA NFR will be an extremely exciting event especially for the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association Cowgirl Breakaway Ropers! It’s finally our turn, Cowgirls. If this doesn’t make you want to pick up a rope and start swinging it, nothing ever will! To actually see a Cowgirl backing up into the box at the NFR is something I personally can’t wait to see. Thanks to the PRCA Stock Contractors like Mac Altizer, owner of Bad Company Rodeo who back in the 90’s added the Breakaway Roping to the list of events in his big Rodeos like Del Rio, Brady and Sonora, Texas. Mac continued to approve the Breakaway Roping with the WPRA throughout the remainder of his Rodeos deep into the 2000s thus opening the door to the PRCA for the WPRA Breakaway Ropers. I’m looking forward to seeing each of you at the upcoming NFR. Thank God we can still have some normalcy in our lives here in Texas! God Bless Chris Ledoux! w

March of the Titans 44th Wrangler BFI to join 37th Cinch Timed Event Championships On the heels of pandemic-prompted civic uncertainty in Nevada that forced the last-minute cancellation in Las Vegas of the World Series of Team Roping Finale, organizers of Wrangler Bob Feist Invitational (BFI) Week have good news. The $700,000 Wrangler BFI, held for 35 years in Reno, will in March 2021 partner with the other titan of the roping industry – the $200,000 Cinch Timed Event Championships (CTEC) – as they converge the same week in Oklahoma’s Lazy E Arena. With no prospect of last-minute changes, Wrangler BFI Week will happen March 14-18, immediately following the CTEC on March 11-13. “It’s been an incredibly difficult year for us all,” said Lazy E General Manager Dan Wall, who credits the arena’s success throughout the pandemic to its intense safety protocols, expansive camping areas and limited access in and out. “It really wears on contestants, fans, stock contractors and all involved in this sport to hear of events already canceling for 2021. Instead, we feel like this partnership between the Cinch TEC and Wrangler BFI was meant to be. We’re grateful to be able to create the best week of timed events in the world.” This March, the CTEC – or “Ironman” of rodeo – will award a $100,000 paycheck to the best of the 20 top all-around cowboys in the world. Over its 37-year history, the event has crowned some of the sport’s most decorated all-around athletes, from Leo Camarillo to Roy Cooper to Trevor Brazile. Fans have also enjoyed its Jr. Ironman Championship, the Cinch Fan Zone and a trade show with more than 100 vendors. “I said in 2013 that I wanted to host a premier Open roping here, right after we purchased this arena,” said Lazy E owner Gary McKinney. “Last year, that dream came true even if it was just for one year. Now, to bring the BFI back to the E to partner with our Timed Event Championships, that just surpasses my wildest dreams.” The 44th annual Wrangler BFI will happen March 14, again anchoring the $2.2 million, four-day cluster of ropings that comprises Wrangler BFI Week. Last year the BFI itself paid $680,000, including a first-place check of $155,000, which Kal Fuller and Reagan Ward won by just seven-hundredths of a second. The eight following ropings scheduled for March 15-18 include two Hooey Junior ropings, the 12.5, 11.5, 10.5 Over 40, 9.5 Over 40 and All-Girl Challenge breakaway and team roping. “We were blown away by how the Lazy E made the Wrangler BFI work last year in a pinch, and we couldn’t be happier to have the event back in the birthplace of team roping’s first six-figure paycheck,” said BFI co-owner Daren Peterson. “This arena was specifically designed for fresh steers and long scores.” For entry information and other details, visit www.bfiweek.com. Tickets will be available starting December 3 at the Lazy E box office; by phone at 405-282-RIDE; or online at www.ticketmaster.com. w 24

Don Sawyer died October 30, his 80th birthday. From his youth onward, the horse industry was a big part of his life. Early on he trained and competed in roping and cutting events, and then moved on to showing Appaloosas in breed shows. In the 1970s, he focused his extensive skills on Quarter Horses, with western pleasure his specialty. His expertise made him as natural as a judge, and he judged the prestigious AQHA World Shows in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1997. Jimmy Pool, 64, Stephenville, died November 16. Much of his life revolved around horses. Years ago, as an undergraduate at Texas A&M University (Class of ’69), he was a member of the school’s World Champion Horse Judging Team. Also, as a member of the A&M Horsemanship Program, he spent summers teaching horsemanship clinics to youth across the state. Later with his family he traveled countless miles to horse shows. He served on the Erath County Horse Committee, as 4-H Leader, Manager of the 4-H Horse Club, and as Erath County 4-H Horse Judging Coach. Doug Carpenter, 64, died November 20 from complications of Covid-19. The much-admired horseman was talented at picking good horses and training them just right. He had over $70K in NSBA lifetime earnings as well as over $89K in NRHA lifetime earnings as an owner, plus over $30K NRHA lifetime earnings as an open rider! w
