McCutcheon Wins NRHA CINCH Non Pro Futurity

Great horses and riders were shining under the Friday-night lights of the Jim Norick Coliseum at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) CINCH Non Pro Futurity featured the top horses and riders from the preliminary round. “Team” is a word you hear spoken a lot by showmen at the NRHA Futurity. For Mandy McCutcheon, who emerged with a winning score of 221.5 to top the CINCH Non Pro Finals, she attributes her incredible career in large part to her family and the team that stands behind her. The NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider from Aubrey, began showing reiners at age 12. She won her first NRHA Futurity in 1993 on Hollywoods Striker. The 2020 Futurity marks at least her 10th NRHA Futurity crown. McCutcheon rode her home-raised and trained gelding Shining At Nite, by Gunners Special Nite and out of A Shining Sidekick to the top spot. Thanks to Futurity Challenge Donors this is the first year the Non Pro Futurity Champion has won a $60,000 paycheck. Bred by Tom McCutcheon and owned by Tom and Mandy McCutcheon, Shining At Nite was nominated by Mandy McCutcheon. “We bred him and raised him,” McCutcheon said. “We had his mother off and on. I wish I still had his mother, but Green Valley Ranch has her now and she’s in very good hands.” She had high praise for Shining At Nite’s performance this evening. “Every maneuver I asked him to do he just stayed hooked up,” McCutcheon said. “He was very good. Once he ran through the gate he just said, ‘Okay, whatever you want me to do.’” The Other Non Pro Championships It was a gratifying night for Tish Fappani, who posted a crowd-pleasing 221 aboard Joes Genes to earn the CINCH Non 6

Pro L3 championship and tie for reserve honors in the L4. In all, Fappani earned $53,606 aboard the mare she owns with her husband, Andrea. Joes Genes, by Lil Joe Cash and out of Electric Genes, has royal bloodlines. Her win helped unofficially push Lil Joe Cash above the NRHA Million Dollar Sire threshold, adding to the significance of the win. “She’s a special mare. We bred and raised her, and Andrea showed both her mom and dad,” Fappani said. Fappani credits Joes Genes for making a rock-solid run in the Finals. “Tonight, I sent her in too fast and that hurt me, but other than that she was right there with me,” she said. Jacob Zimmerman, of Springfield, MO, teamed up with his horse Rufin Up The Chics for a 215.5 and the L2 worth $25,741. Rufin Up The Chics is by Not Ruf At All out of Ms Playalotta Chic, and was nominated by his dad, Justin Zimmerman. Zimmeran, who celebrated his 16th birthday a week prior to the NRHA Futurity, thanked Arno Honstetter for selling Rufin Up The Chics, a horse he calls “Elon,” to the Zimmerman family. “Today I marked a 215.5. He was really good. I couldn’t have asked him to be much better,” he said. “He listened to me and did everything I asked. He could have turned a little bigger, but overall, he was very good.” Hannah Mitchell had never competed in a run-off before, but that all changed on Friday night when, at the end of the Futurity Finals, she found herself part of a threeway tie for the L1 Championship. She and her horse, Stars And Stripes, entered the Jim Norick Coliseum one last time to battle it out for the title. “She wasn’t as good in the run-off as her first run, but she still tried her heart out,” Continued on page 8

NRHA Non-Pro Futurity Cont from page 8 Mitchell shared. In the end, it was enough, as the pair were victorious. Not only did Mitchell and Stars And Stripes win the L1, they tied for third in the L2, tied for fifth in L3, and tied for 12th in Tish Fappani L4 for earnings & Joes Genes of $27,832. By Star Spangled Whiz out of Chick N Squirt, Stars And Stripes was nominated by Hannah’s father Stephen Mitchell, who purchased the filly from Hannah’s aunt and uncle, Shawn and Shelley Gann. It’s been a dream for Mike Weber, who’s been showing reining horses since the 1970s, to win at the Futurity. “I even remember watching it in Ohio when I was a kid,” he shared. On Friday night, Weber took home the Prime Time Futurity Championship on his horse Mifchievious. In addition to the Prime Time title, Weber and Mifchievious also earned fifth in the Non Pro L1, winning more than $4,200. Weber purchased Mifchievious, by ARC Gunnabeabigstar out of Mifilady, from his friend Kenneth Krebs, who nominated the mare. Seventeen-year-old Ronny “Lane” Colston, of Frankfurt, KY, rode Lil Ruf Whizkey to the top of the Youth Futurity thanks to an impressive 221, the second highest score of the day. It was a great day for Colston who also split reserve honors in the Level 4 for total earnings of $34,651. Lil Ruf Mike Weber & Whizkey is by Mifchievious NRHA Million Dollar Sire Whizkey N Diamonds and out of Lil Ruf Startime. The 2017 gelding was nominated by Terry Leffew and is owned by Kevin Colston. w 8

AFTER 8 YEARS, DIXIE IS HOME!

Almost 8 years ago, Kayla Pevytoe, 26, of Magnolia, TX, experienced the loss of her horse, Dixie. Her mother passed away in 2008 and Dixie helped her get through that tragic time. Sadly, after an unfortunate, turn of events, Dixie was sold without her knowledge. Pevytoe has been looking for her childhood heart horse since April of 2013. Throughout the years she posted on Facebook, searched groups and equine sale sites. Time went by and no leads emerged. Pevytoe finally filed a “Searching for Horse” report on Stolen Horse International’s website, www.netposse.com which can be thought of as the horse industry ‘Amber’ alert.

“Two days after making my report, I received a phone call from a lady stating she saw the NetPosse Alert on Facebook and that she thought Dixie was bought at a horse auction by some friends of hers,” Pevytoe recalled. It was Dixie. When her husband, Ricky got Dixie out of the trailer she was not the same Dixie she remembered. Pevytoe called Dixie’s name a couple of times, rubbed her forehead and then all of a sudden her ears perked up. “Dixie rubbed her head on me like she always used to do!!! Our reunion was the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. Saying that having Dixie back with me is a dream come true would be an understatement!” w

True Grace Cowgirls

By Sherri Mell, 2X Hall of Fame Cowgirl With the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) behind us, I realize that there are a lot of people that do not totally understand what was occurring with the Breakaway Roping. Let me try to help you understand what was so significant about the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Members being able to rope at the National Finals Rodeo in the Breakaway Roping. The WNFR is a Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association Finals. The WPRA has been able to be a part of the WNFR for many years with the top 15 Barrel Racers competing in 10 rounds. Stetson Wright wins two world titles at 2020 Wrangler NFR

Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield had a forgetful 2020 Wrangler NFR, placing in just two rounds and registering six no-times. But Mayfield rode a huge regular-season performance to finish atop the world standings with $198,399, just $231 more than second-place Marty Yates. Mayfield came into the NFR with an $89,479 lead over his nearest competitor, and he needed every dollar. “It means the world to me,” Mayfield said. “It’s something I wanted growing up, it’s been a dream of mine. I had a great year coming in, the best year I could ever imagine having. I had a rough Finals, I really didn’t rope like I should have, but God had big plans, he put me here for a

to be one of the best cowboys to ever live,” Wright said. “That means a lot to hear people talk that highly about me makes me feel lucky and happy to be where I’m at.” In the bull riding, Wright edged Ty Wallace for the world crown. Wright finished with $267,941, edging Ty Wallace, who came in with $256,599. Stetson clinched his inaugural bull riding world title by placing second in the average with 539 points on six head. Wallace was third in the average with 533.5 points on six. Colten Fritzlan won the average with 605 points on seven. “It was crazy. Ty Wallace, Colten Fritzlan and Ky Hamilton all rode phenomenally,” Wright said. “Every guy did this week, but it came down to us four in the last round and it was crazy to come out on top. This is what I live for, the stories when it comes down to the last ride.” w

A night after winning the coveted all-around world championship, Stetson Wright returned to make his 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo one for the ages. It ended in fitting fashion as Wright split first with a 92-point ride on Bar T Rodeo’s Angel’s Landing to win the bull riding world championship at Globe Life Field, Dec. 12. “I was in the race for the all-around and to come out on top I was at a loss for words, I was star struck to beat guys I look up to,” said Wright, who locked up the all-around crown Dec. 11. “But winning the all-around world title meant so much to me, but to win it again feels better for the simple fact that people might say I was lucky my first time. But I feel like after the second one, maybe they’ll still think I’m lucky, but everyone has their own opinion, and it doesn’t change the fact that I got what I wanted, so I’m just happy to be here.” Wright has won back-to-back all-around world championships – the first to do so since Trevor Brazile in 2014 and 2015. At 21, Wright is the youngest cowboy to be crowned All-Around World Champion in his first two seasons. He became the first cowboy to win the all-around gold buckle and a roughstock world championship in the same year since Ty Murray in 1998. Murray won the all-around and bull riding titles that year. “That’s what I always wanted growing up,

reason, and I think just having a good season paid off. “I don’t think I roped to my full capability, and I knew it could go either way. I just kept my head up, knew what the other guys had to beat and paid attention to that and knew I needed to make my best run (in Round 10). I really didn’t think I’d won the world walking out of there but then they told me, and it’s a great feeling.” w

Ryder Wright split the Round 10 win with a 91-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Big Texas to catapult to the world and average championships at the 2020 Wrangler NFR. Wright also won a world title in 2017. “(This feels) twice as good,” Wright said. “That horse has been around forever. I remember my dad (Cody) got on that horse when I was little. I think he’s like 20 years old. Super happy to have him.” By splitting the go-round with his brother Stetson, Ryder finished with five go-round wins – Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. He tied the PRCA record for most saddle bronc riding wins at the NFR for the second time in his career, doing it first in 2016. He shares the record with Billy Etbauer (1992, 1999 and 2005) and Dan Mortensen (1998). Ryder also established a saddle bronc riding average record at the NFR with 876.5 points on 10 head. “I’ve had an awesome week,” Ryder said. “Couldn’t have drawn any better than I did. That’s a huge part in winning world titles, drawing good horses. I was lucky enough to capitalize on them. I was feeling pretty good today. I was confident and just let it play out, and it worked out in my favor.” w

The State Center, Iowa, cowboy clocked a 3.9-second time to place fourth in the final round and win the average and world championships. Jorgensen had a 5.0-second run and failed to place in Round 10. “I’m still trying to make everything come to reality right now,” Edler said. “I don’t know whether to cheer, laugh, cry, what I’m supposed to do. I’ve wanted this so bad and I’ve worked so hard the last six years. Team roping partners Lovell, Eaves win world titles

With a world championship in reach, team ropers Colby Lovell and Paul Eaves won Round 10 with a 4.4-second run to capture coveted world championship gold buckles. Lovell finished with $187,836 in the world standings, defeating second-place Luke Brown by $453. Eaves finished with $178,486, edging runner-up Payden Bray by $2,983. Eaves also won a team roping heeling world championship in 2018 while roping with Clay Smith. “It was crucial, we had to do it,” Eaves said. “We had to win the round to win the world and it was everything, and we knew coming into it that it would be that way.” Despite the magnitude of the moment in Round 10 Lovell stayed calm. “Everything this week we’ve been through with the ups and downs and trying to stay focused, do our job and being fortunate enough here at the end, I didn’t have any jitters,” Lovell said. “If it came together, it came together. I told my wife if it happens, it happens and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Paul and I talked before this and I made up my mind if Luke (Brown’s) run placed in the round I was just going to go win money and try to get paid, but the way it fell together, Paul and I were talking and I said we’ll try to win the round. “Our steer was slower, and he came to the left. I was relying on my horse (Bartender) to let me catch up fast and be really close to the steer. When I got up there and stuck it on him, I knew I was in a bad spot and I tried to hang him, and I saw Paul coming and I went for it, and he heeled the fire out of him.”

SouthWest Horse Trader February 2021

Eaves said he and Lovell tried to keep things simple in Round 10. “When we were here (Friday), we saw the standings, and the average plays such a big part in this deal that nobody ever wins the world without at least some average money,” Eaves said. “I guess it wasn’t entirely in our hands, we had to do the best we could do, and it had to fall right, but it was exciting all day knowing we had a chance.” Lovell reflected on what it was like to win his inaugural gold buckle. “Man, it’s everything,” he said. “There’s a fine line of people that have it and you grow up roping your whole life wanting it. Last night on the stage (for the Round 9 winner’s presentation) I was the only one without one (a world champion buckle) and I thought about that while standing up there. You strive to be the best and strive to keep the confidence to think you’re the best. If you don’t think you’re the best then it’s hard to compete against these guys.” Eaves was also happy with gold buckle No. 2. “It’s a personal thing, satisfaction, to do that,” Eaves said. “Everyone forgets about it the next year but for yourself on the inside, it’s an awesome stage to be on.” w PRCA ProRodeo Photo by Roseanna Sales

FEBRUARY LIVESTOCK SHOW ROUNDUP

It’s livestock show season and although the Covid-19 pandemic has created obstacles, most stock shows in the Southwest are still happening. Safety mandates have the committees rallying to continue tradition and provide a safe place for exhibitors to show their livestock. The first livestock show in the Southwest was in Fort Worth, Texas in 1897. Inspiration to keep with tradition is part of what’s behind the driving force to proceed with the stock shows in 2021. In addition, the FFA and 4-H members develop life skills associated with raising and exhibiting livestock projects. The youth gain knowledge and skills such as responsibility, communication, record-keeping, and leadership through the process of developing their livestock projects. Albeit true, the youth typically have many people assisting during all phases of their animals’ development. Animals considered livestock for show include pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, llamas, and alpacas. Also included are chicken, geese, turkey, and pigeons. And while each breed of animal has their own association that oversees the registration and standards, livestock shows serve as the venue to show off the animal represented. And while there are over 3000 livestock shows in the United States, this article will serve to inform when, where, and Covid-19 protocols added or changes to many livestock shows across the Southwest during the month of February. w • 1/30-2/4: Alternative Pig Show 2021, Fort Worth. GRAINS OR NO GRAINS: Addressing Pet Owner Concerns

Contributed by Pet Talk, a service of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University

Pet parents want to feed their dogs the best diet possible to keep their furry friends happy and healthy, but there are so many options on the market: prepackaged or home-cooked, wet food or dry, and grain-free. Recently, interest has arisen surrounding grain-free diets and their impact on canine health. When searching for the right food for their dogs, pet owners often focus on corn and wheat; however, many other grains are used in pet foods that have great nutritional value, including rice, barley, oats, and millet. “Much of the initial push for ‘grain-free’ diets for dogs came from folks who were drawn into the marketing strategy that dogs are carnivores and grains were unnatural,” said Dr. Deb Zoran, a professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). “Dogs are, in fact, omnivores; they are actually programmed metabolically and nutritionally to use the building blocks from both plants (grains) and animals to meet their requirements for essential nutrients and energy,” she said. “This is illustrated by wild dogs and wolves eating the ingesta—contents of the digestive tract that are largely plant material or grain—of large animal species they kill.” Pet owners choose what diet to feed their dog based on word-ofmouth, online, marketing of pet stores, or veterinary recommendations, but according to Zoran, many owners tend to choose their pet’s diet based on pet food company marketing. “The pet food industry is a very competitive place and many of the smaller companies and boutique foods do a fantastic job of marketing their products,” Zoran said. “Unfortunately, those same companies do not all have the same resources for research and development and quality assurance testing. “A recipe for good food is one thing, but if you don’t test the product once it is made, processed, and packaged, you can’t be sure the food still contains what you intended, and that is where potential problems start,” Zoran said. It is important for dogs to have a balanced diet in order to thrive, and Zoran said dog owners should know that “there are nutrients present in grains that are essential for a complete and balanced diet.” “If grains are removed from a diet, they must be replaced by another food source that has those nutrients in sufficient quantities to balance the diet,” she said. Some dog owners have switched their pets to a grain-free diet because of concern about possible wheat gluten allergies or intolerance, but, according to Zoran, these conditions are relatively uncommon in dogs compared to other types of food-related conditions. “Many people have been convinced that their dogs have a ‘grain allergy,’ much like celiac disease or gluten disease in humans,” Zoran said. “However, true dietary allergies in dogs are caused by the protein, or meat, sources in a diet. It doesn’t mean that your dog can’t have an intolerance to wheat gluten or another food ingredient, but it is not the same as an allergy. “The bottom line is, your dog’s skin, hair coat, or gastrointestinal (GI) function may sometimes improve on a grain-free diet, but it may simply have been the diet change itself and not the lack of grains, per se,” she said. 26

SouthWest Horse Trader February 2021

Zoran recommends that pet owners choose diets that have rigorous standards for research and quality testing; a well-developed reputation for providing complete and balanced foods; and back up their label claims with nutritional quality control testing. Additionally, owners should always seek advice from their veterinarian before changing their dog’s diet. “If your dog seems to do better with diets without wheat or corn, consult a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist for information about the safest diet options available on the market,” Zoran said. “They can provide commercial and homemade options that can meet your dog’s specific nutritional needs.” w
