Keeping them Safe with Portable and Modular Horse Barns This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Ps 118:24
Since 2005 Deer Creek Structures has been blessed, even with all the up’s and down’s that life has brought. God has supplied for our needs, and we want to thank Him, and our loyal customers for making this business a success! We specialize in building portable and modular horse barns, building them here at our facility in Lott, Tx and delivering them from the west coast to the east coast. Our wide variety of barn sizes and styles allows us to offer our clients the flexibility of choosing the right barn to fit their needs and budget. Our standard run-in sheds are a great fit for locating them in the pasture where the horses can access them on their own and get out of the weather as they feel the need to. Adding a tack room to these barns also allows you to have the ease of having the feed and hay within easy reach. Our shedrow barns come with the stalls already built into them. The dutch doors are great for keeping the barn in line with the retro look, but we also offer a sliding door with a grill front to allow for lots of ventilation when keeping a horse stalled. Another feature with our shedrow barns is the extended overhang in the front. An 8’ -12’ overhang gives a great place to groom and tack-up, as well as giving more protection for the horses to get out of the weather. The aisle barns that we build are a great way to raise the value of your property, as well as giving you the barn of your dreams! The standard size will have a 12’ section on each side, and then a 12’ center aisle. These barns can then be built to accommodate whatever length you need, simply by adding another section. Come by and see us at our manufacturing facility in Lott TX, or feel free to visit our website at deercreekstructures.com. We would love to help you design and build the barn that you are dreaming of! Happy trails to y’all, and God bless! w

Steamed hay and ComfortStall flooring offer multiple horse health benefits for meticulous Texas owner. Anne Klein keeps her horses at a boardAnne Klein ing facility in Austin, Texas, where stall con& Rumi struction and equipment are not typically things that individual boarders get involved with. Even though it’s not her own barn, she became curious about the wide-ranging impact of the flooring her horses stand on. “What started with curiosity about flooring turned into a research project,” Anne laughs. “I asked vets, friends and anyone else who owns horses what they thought of ComfortStall.” At the outset of that research she had “no intention” of investing in flooring at a stable she didn’t own. In her conversations with equine professionals and owners, she heard first-hand stories about reduced hock sores, reduced stocking up, no urine soaking into the stall base, level stall floors, proprioception, better air quality, shaving and time savings and more. Anne could not be happier with how her horses have reacted since installing ComfortStall for them. Blankets dusted in shavings indicate they are lying down to rest and sleep more often. They’re stocking up less and hock sores and occasional cases of thrush are gone, she reports happily. One of Anne’s horses, “Rumi,” is a Grand Prix level dressage horse. Physically, dressage is all about suppleness in the body and Anne believes that ComfortStall’s firm cushion has helped him achieve that in the arena. The constant micromovements required when standing on ComfortStall create proprioception that is critical for muscle and joint recovery, and for general health maintenance. As is often said in the horse care world: “motion is lotion.” Cleaner air is another bonus, Anne says. Less bedding is needed for cushion in a ComfortStall, which goes a long way toward clearing the air. Plus, “It makes is so easy to clean the stalls. The time savings is amazing!” Perfect Partners Discovering the flooring led Anne to its sister product, Haygain Steamed Hay. Haygain’s high-temperature hay steaming rids hay of dust, mold, fungi and bacteria found in even top-quality hay. Whether in hay or floating around the barn aisle, these respirable irritants are the main cause of respiratory 8

problems that affect a high percentage of active horses, often without obvious symptoms. “Comfortstall and Haygain steaming partner really well,” Anne says. She feeds primarily compressed Timothy hay and has noticed that the hydrating impact of the steaming process “plumps” the hay to where she’s feeding less of it without seeing any loss of weight or nutrients in her horses. They get a bit less but eat more of what they get. Rumi use to dunk his hay in the water trough. That was great for hydration, but made a terrible mess, Anne recalls. Plus, wet hay can be a petri dish of bacteria growth if left uneaten for even a short period of time. Hay dunking is another thing of the past since Rumi began eating steamed hay. Since her human children grew up and flew the coop, Anne’s horses have become the main beneficiaries of her loving and attentive daily care. “I am really blessed to be able to own horses now that I’m retired,” she reflects. Providing thorough care for them makes emotional and practical sense. “Whether your horse cost $200,000 or $5,000, the cost of that horse means nothing if you can’t ride it and enjoy it.” Haygain Health Gains
A science-backed horse health company, Haygain originated with high-temperature hay steaming process Steamed Hay Stopped developed in conjunction with the Royal Agricultural the Messy Hay Dunking! University in the U.K. 11 years ago. The injection of steam into a thermally-sealed chest brings hay to temperatures necessary to kill mold, bacteria and fungi and it virtually eliminates dust. All these inhalable irritants, the main causes of conditions on the Equine Asthma Spectrum, are reduced by 99% during the one-hour steam. A recent three-year study of over 700 active sporthorses found that 88% of participants had some degree of Inflammatory Airway Disease, many without clear symptoms. This confirms multiple prior studies indicating that 80% of horses are affected by respiratory challenges. In the recent study, feeding Haygain steamed hay reduced the risk of IAD by 65%. The Original Steaming also adds water to the diet for improved digestive health and Pro Panel 3-in-1 its appealing taste whets the appetite of even the pickiest eaters. Higher Quality, Economical Option
For over 85 years, the sister company, Snider Industries, has been making the finest quality one inch Southern Yellow Pine lumber available in the market. So, it was a natural decision for the Snider family to avail the product to the animal bedding/wood shavings industry 18 years ago when the opportunity presented itself. As the family purchased other branded shavings bales in locations around the country, they found the prices to be exorbitant and the quality lacking and inconsistent. It was a desire for a higher quality and a more economical option that drove the birth of Pinecone Shavings. This native Texas family is also astute in equestrian care and management across the country. Having owned and showed in multiple disciplines, both English and Western, the family has participated in Equestrian Sports for over 35 years. Pinecone Shavings is not simply manufacturing and selling a product, the company is living the business mantra. Even the younger generations have achieved success at the national level in their own equestrian endeavors. There is a clear understanding and appreciation of the need for clean product naturally processed with no outside material from other manufacturing, no hog material or dust. This is all made possible for Pinecone Shavings by a triple-screening process that guarantees absorbent, dust-free single source pine shavings for an animal-friendly bedding environment. Pinecone Shavings is now being distributed in truckload quantities to nation-wide retailers through Aden Brook. Texas Made with Superior Quality is the promise for a quality product that is one of the most ultra-absorbent and sanitary shaving products on the market. The shaving products are packaged at a state of-the-art facility and come in 4.0 CF and 8.0 CF of usable volume, resulting in more weight per bag for longer-lasting use and absorbency. The company prides itself on superior pallet wrapping that helps retailers protect the product when stored outside. The small size finer flake is easy to sift and creates less waste, while the medium flake makes for fuller bedding with maximum cushioning needed for large farm animals and horses, and lower measurable use. Both products produce no dust for happier animals; a product you can trust. Visit adenbrook.com/products to request a quote or visit www.pineconeshavings.com for more information. w

COMPETITIVE TRAIL NEWS IN THE SOUTHWEST LOCAL COMPETITOR TAKES NATIONAL HONORS
Optical Harmonics
Fran Muench of New Ulm, Texas completed a stellar year on the competitive trail in 2019. Aboard her Half-Arabian gelding Giacomo (“Jack”), Muench earned Distance Horse of the Year from the Arabian Horse Association and won the prestigious President’s Cup, the highest honor bestowed by the North American Trail Ride Conference. The team completed 840 competitive miles in 14 NATRC rides in seven states, winning eight first places, including seven Sweepstakes awards which is a ride’s highest score of the Open division regardless of weight class. In addition to the President’s Cup, Muench and Jack earned their NATRC National Championship blanket, jacket and buckle. “This horse has so much heart,” said Muench, “I just had to remember to ride for him, and he took it from there.” The President’s Cup award was presented to Muench on February 15 at the NATRC National Convention held at the Hotel Valencia in San Antonio where renowned veterinarian Susan Garlinghouse, DVM was the keynote speaker for the day’s activities. Muench had committed to chair the convention in 2018, not possibly knowing she would be earning the top honors. “What a whirlwind few months it has been,” she said at the close of the successful event. “I am so grateful for my horse, for my fellow competitors, NATRC ride managers and volunteers, and to my husband Gayle for the support I have received this year.” Muench is not taking 2020 off though as she and Jack traveled to Florida last month to compete in their first NATRC event of the year where they picked up where they left off in 2019, winning first place and Sweepstakes once again at the New Year’s ResoluFran Meunch tion Competitive Trail Ride. w & Giacomo
SPRING RIDE SEASON IN FULL SWING
The 2020 competitive trail riding season is underway with the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC), American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) and Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC) hosting more than 20 events in the upcoming months around the southwest. March features NATRC’s Scamper at 7IL Trails in Cat Spring and Raising the Bar in Valley Mills, AERC’s Old Glory in Athens and Shanghai Trails in El Campo, and TTCCs Cactus Crawl in El Dorado, all in Texas. “These organizations offer trail competitions of different types to appeal to equestrians of all ages and disciplines,” said Elaine Swiss, a NATRC ride manager who competes in all three events. “We recognize that one size does not fit all. There are shorter distances, longer distances, judged obstacles, no-obstacle races, and fundamentally pleasure riding divisions without timing elements. Just come out and ride!” More information can be found on the organizations’ websites and FaceBook pages: www.texastrailchallengeclub.com, www.natrc.org, www.aerc.org, or by calling Swiss at 830-825-3032.w

Appaloosa Club
Established in 1961, the New Mexico Appaloosa Horse Club is one of the most unique non-profit equine organizations in the state and one of the oldest chartered regional clubs of the Appaloosa Horse Club. Throughout each year, we provide show opportunities and other activities for our members and other horsemen. Lee Paul Shinn, 57, an AQHA and NSBA trainer, died in Florida on January 29. He was most passionate about English events. In 2017, he won an NSBA world title in jr hunter hack with Metallic Iron, and in 2018 showed the stallion to a Res Superhorse title at the AQHA World. Hottish was euthanized February 7 at the Springtown ranch of owners Dustin and Deena Andrews. At the time of his death, he ranked 4th among NCHA’s 2020 leading sires. His 3 lifetime performing crops have produced earners of over $3.3 million.
Loony Cat, owned by Lauren Fairbanks, Dallas, died February 10. The 2009 sorrel gelding was a fierce athlete with a big heart. In 2014, Charlie Ashcraft rode him to win ACHA’s 5-6-Year-Old Open title.
