FOR SOME HORSES, A LITTLE STARCH IS TOO MUCH

When a horse has severe metabolic issues, veterinarians recommend a diet containing less than 10% soluble carbohydrates. While these levels can be adjusted in feed, what about forage? Triple Crown’s® new Safe Starch Forage eliminates the guesswork. We buy grass hays specifically for their low NSC content, then blend in a vitamin and mineral supplement that includes our nutritional EquiMix® Technology. This provides a total diet

(hay and feed) with a soluble carbohydrate level below 10%, along with the optimum fiber length required for ideal gut fermentation. For more information or to find your nearest dealer, visit us online at www.triplecrownfeed.com or call 800-451-9916.

elcome to the October issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. The Annual Amateur Issue is a favorite issue to produce. We’ve reported on some of this summer’s biggest events of the year. Below is information on a new sorting school and show using slow and quiet cattle handling. Hey they may even be able to teach some of the old sorters some new tricks. w

Western Heritage Ranch Sorting School and Competition

Cowboy Fellowship of Aggieland is hosting a Ranch Sorting School and Competition on October 13-14 at Still Creek Ranch. Separate Adult and Youth classes will be held concurrently beginning 9:00 am on Saturday the 14th. Cost for riders is $60 if preregistered by October 10. After that, cost is $75. Preregistration can be done at www.aggielandcowboy.com. Western Heritage sorting is for those who excel in slow and quiet cattle handling. Riders are limited to a trot or slower, and verbal noise directed to influence cattle is prohibited. Western Heritage Sorting follows standard Cinch RSNC rules. Each school registrant receives a Cinch Ranch Sorting National Championship graduation certificate, complimentary 1-year C-RSNC membership and a monogrammed trophy shirt. The Western Heritage Ranch Sorting School is coordinated by Cinch Ranch Sorting National Championship, and is for any aspiring and rookie ranch horse rider with little to no ranch sorting experience. As a part of the event, there will be instructional clinics on Friday evening starting at 6:00 pm. A live demo on How To Read Cattle will be held in the Still Creek Arena, presented by James Davison, NCHA Cutter, followed by a demo of the Emmett 4 Technique by Gary Wells from Queensland, Australia focusing on Balance, Softness, and Suppleness of the Horse. Classes on Saturday will include: Riding and Training Horses to Work Cattle, Working/Handling Cattle Horseback, Perform-

ance Horse Health Status Check, and Mechanics/Strategies Used in Ranch Sorting. Concessions will be available for purchase on Friday night and Saturday. Lunch and Supper will be available to purchase from the Cowboy Fellowship Chuck Wagon Team on Saturday. The day will culminate with a Western Heritage Ranch Sorting Competition that will include Beginner and Rookie classes, as well as a Brazos Valley South Central Texas Rancher/Stockman Challenge. Beginner and Rookie Classes are $15 per run with pick/draw partner, and a 50% payback. Maximum of 5 runs. 6 Buckles will be awarded to top Beginner teams, and 8 buckles will be awarded to the top Rookie teams in 4 divisions (Top 4-H, Cowboy Church, 40 Something Ladies, and Non-Specific). Appaloosa Nationals

Appaloosa Exhibitors Earn Top Honors at National Show

Keebler (left), Abigail & Bodhi

Amateur Spotlight: Abigail Teets Abigail Teets lives in Buda, TX, and is a full-time student at Texas State University in San Marcos. Her horses are Keebler, a Rocky Mountain Horse, and Bodhi, a mustang, and she keeps them at Grayar Farm in Driftwood. She competes mostly at Dripping Springs Ranch Park, in ranch events, western dressage, and speed (for fun!). Most Proud Show Moment? When I took Keebler to his first ranch show this past July, I was thrilled when he was completely focused and willing, even though I asked him to do a ton of new things. We won ranch riding in the open division! Challenges? Keebler is a Rocky Mountain Horse. Typically when you see those, they are out on the trail, and not really in ranch or dressage competition. A lot of judges in those events aren’t familiar with the Rocky Mountain Horse breed. I think he is sometimes underestimated in his ability to perform alongside true ranch and dressage horses, since he’s not quite built the same and moves a little differently. Role model(s)? Reata Brannaman is Buck Brannaman’s daughter, but has made a name for herself by running her own colt starting business and teaching in the equine program at Montana State University. It’s inspiring for me to see a young woman achieving so much success in the western industry. Words of Advice to other non-pros? Don’t put yourself or your horse in a box. Regardless of what a horse is bred for, I think cross-training and trying different events is extremely beneficial both mentally and physically. If you have the opportunity to go somewhere different or try something new with your horse, you should absolutely take it!. w 10

DAVIDSON Successful at USHJA Green Hunter Championship Davidson and rider Amberlee Wentz for owner Dana Vollbracht, were winners of the $2,500 Texas Super Series Horse at the USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Championship! The pair also earned the $5,000 American Bred Bonus and 3rd place in Tier 2, earning another $2000. These earnings bring Davidson over the $38,000 earnings mark through the Texas Super Series and USHJA Green Hunter programs combined, in addition to their earnings total-

ing over $6,700 in USHJA National Hunter Derbies. Davidson was bred, raised, and trained by Colleen McQuay. Sired by Patrick and Jana Rodes’ stallion Cabana and out of Bernadette Mulliken’s great hunter mare Ellie, this talented warmblood gelding is currently trained by Susie Balenseifen. w

with the awards we give out; we could not thank them enough.” Proving the Pinto World Championship isn’t all about equine competition, many special family-friendly activities were held during the two-week show. These included: the PWC Welcome Party Sponsored by Lopez Foods, with free food and drinks; the Youth and Amateur Ice Cream Social, PWC Costume Class and the PWC Dog Show. The show also hosted two receptions for Corporate Partners and the Red Hat Society. As always, we look forward to seeing our exhibitors at our next events. The 2017 Color Breed Congress will be held November 3-11. A new addition, the Mule & Donkey Congress Show will be held in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress. Amateur Spotlight: Mallory W Tolleson not so great runs are when you really have a chance to change and grow as a competitor.

Mallory Williams Tolleson hails from Jacksboro, TX. She is a rancher and Army wife, currently living in Fort Benning, Georgia but moving to Anchorage, Alaska, early in 2018. Her barn and horses are in Jacksboro and she regularly comes to Texas to compete in American Cutting Horse Association and National Cutting Horse Association events. Most proud show moment(s): My first is from 2000, when I clinched the ACHA Junior Youth year-end title. I had worked and sacrificed for all year and my hard work paid off. Second is from a weekend last year, a while after I had gotten back into showing on Betty On Me. I had been in a slump and it had taken a toll on my spirits. Finally, everything fell into place and clicked. She and I marked two 74s that weekend and have continued to be a successful team. Challenges? I showed extensively when I was younger, but I took 15 years off before getting back into showing two years ago. Many things changed in that time, and I struggled with my confidence. I am pretty critical of myself. It has been a challenge to remind myself to look at the positives when things don’t go my way. Those 12

Superstitions:? I’ve always been a believer of “don’t put your hat on the bed”, and 13 has been my lucky number in recent years. Other than that, I don’t have many superstitions in the show pen. Role model(s)? My mom, Paula Williams. She is the one who really got our family into cutting and gave me this deep love of riding. She is the strongest woman I know. As a rancher, cutter, and mother, she is an incredible role model. Favorite horse: That’s Shesa Lady Doc Bar. She and I are both 29 this year. Lady showed her heart out for us in the Open, Non Pro, and the Youth, at least six times per weekend and usually three weekends per month. We now have two of her grandbabies of showing age, and it gives me such joy to see her legacy succeeding in the show pen. I also love Cruzn For Checks, aka Salvador, who is in the photo with me here.. Words of advice for nonpros: Remember to have fun! We as amateurs and non-pros chose this “hobby” for the love of the sport. We don’t have to travel miles upon miles most weekends and log long hours in the saddle, but we do it because at the heart of it all, we love the camaraderie, the atmosphere, and the horses that show their hearts out for us. Don’t ever forget to smile and enjoy the ride. w

A Spectacular Summer Contributed Courtesy of NCHA

The NCHA Summer Spectacular is held in July and is the final leg of the NCHA Triple Crown of Cutting and is contested over 20 days. It features the NCHA Derby for 4-year-olds, and the NCHA Classic Challenge for 5/6-year-olds and offers a purse of over $2 million. Sir Long Legs, owned by Lew Hall, Lakeland, FL, and Austin Shepard pulled out all the stops for a rousing 229-point eleventh hour win, on Sunday, August 6, in the 2017 NCHA Open Derby Finals. Metallic Smart Cat, owned by Cynthia Villa, Chico, CA, and ridden by Matt Miller, scored 224 points for the reserve. Justin Chalmers and HC Herd Boss, owned by Eddie and Barbara Young, San Angelo, TX, scored 225 points for an unassailable win in the Limited Open. HC Herd Boss LTE $14,539 was bred by Eddie and Barbara Young, who also own his sire, Herding Cats. Brett McGlothlin and his own horse, Somethingtobelievein, earned the reserve with 219 points. Paula Wood, Stephenville, TX, scored 219.5 points to win the 2017 Derby NP Finals on Suen Too Be Black, by Boon Too Suen. Madalyn Colgrove, Boligee, AL, scored 218 for the reserve on Sweet Baby Marie, by High Brow CD. Cole Rothwell, Dallas, TX, was the clear winner with 221 points aboard Khaleesi Cat in the Limited NP Finals. Lica Pinkston, Alice, TX, claimed reserve with 217.5 points riding Stylish Top Brow. Sue Christensen, Walton, NE, won the Amateur Finals with 219 points aboard Auspicious Ruby Cat. Ryan Smith, Royce City, TX, was reserve with 215 points on Suen Or Later. accolades with a 229-point win in the NCHA Classic Challenge. Ridden by Hall of Famer Grant Setnicka for the Jaeggi family’s J Five Ranch, Weatherford, TX, Ichis My Choice went next-to-last in the 26-horse finals and prevailed by a six-point margin over Metallic Rebel. Reserve champion Metallic Rebel, by Metallic Cat, was ridden by Beau Galyean for Thomas Guinn of Philadelphia, MS. At 63, Joe Howard Williamson has been the king of the weekend shows for decades, winning three NCHA NP World titles, and taking his place in the Non-Pro Hall of Fame with $1.2 million in earnings. He broke new ground with a half-point win in the NCHA NP Classic Challenge with Miz Savanah Ichi. It was his first major win in Will Rogers Coliseum, and his estimated paycheck of $16,567 is his biggest ever for a single run. Kristen Galyean marked 221 on Button Down Supercat later in the set for the reserve honors. Jessica Feiner, Aspen, CO, scored 220.5 points on B Nimble to win the Limited NP. Michael Kemna, Valley View, TX, took the reserve with 217 points on Ruby Shadow Cat. Bella Anderson, Victoria, TX, riding The Reyl McCoy, and Jennifer Rector, Rogersville, MO, on Smooth Reyn, tied with 218 points, as co-champions of the Amateur. w

Tulsa Reining Classic

Fappani Claims Futurity Win The Hollywoodstinseltown Open Futurity took the spotlight on Saturday, September 2 at The Tulsa Reining Classic, held at Expo Square August 28 - September 3. Big stops, fast spins, and flashy horses were showcased in the open futurity in the Ford Truck Arena where 85 entries battled for championship honors. Andrea Fappani turned in a crowd-pleaser to score a 224 aboard All American Vintage for owner Morris Kulmer to claim the Hollywoodstinseltown Level 4 Open Futurity championship. All American Vintage is 2014 stallion by A Sparkling Vintage and out of All Ruffed Up. “I was nervous today just because we’ve had this horse for two years and I really believe in him, but it’s the first time we’ve ever shown him and every time you show them for the first time you’re going to find out for sure if what you thought was right or wrong,” Fappani said of Saturday’s performance. Thiago Boechat rode Xtra Magic Doctor for owner Silver Spurs Equine to the Hollywoodstinseltown Level 3 Open Futurity championship. 223.5. “The run went great. The horse was there for me and it went just like we planned,” Boechat said of the home bred and trained 3-year-old, which he says makes the win even more special. In the Hollywoodstinseltown Level 2 Open Futurity Roberto Berti and Jordan Kole Price shared the co-championship with scores of 221. Berti rode High Voltage Pep, a 2014 mare by Gun Smoke Dennis and out of Electropep. The mare is home bred, which Berti says made the win more meaningful. Price rode Checksworthy, a 2014 mare

by Big Chex To Cash and out of Banjoes Shinning Star for owner Terry Leffew. Price felt from the beginning of the run it was going to be a notable score, because of the way his mare warmed up and then because of her beginning maneuvers. Mandy McCutcheon and Kevin Ball shared the Turnabout Farm Level 4 Non Pro Futurity championship with scores of 220.5. McCutcheon rode her home raised mare One Last Gunner by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of One Last Corona. “She was really good and really solid,” McCutcheon said of her mare’s run, adding praise for the mare’s performing in the tough field at Tulsa. “This is a really tough futurity; it’s one of the best ones in the country. It’s been a great week and I couldn’t be happier.” Ball rode This Chic Guns It, a 3-yearold by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of This Chic Dun It, to not only the Level 4 win, but the Level 3 and Level 2 championships as well. Ball purchased the mare rather unexpectedly when Nathan Piper found her only one day after Ball mentioned he was looking for a 2-year-old. “I saw her and it was just the right place, the right time kind of a deal,” he said. “She’s come along better and better and she’s just been a joy to be around.” Ball says the mare has only been hauled and shown a hand full of times, but continues to progress each time. Sandy Eustace rode Chex With A Dream to the Prime Time with a score of 221.5. “I feel wonderful,” she said of her win. “I’m just glad that she did well.” For complete results, Mandy winner’s highlights, and to McCutcheon watch the winning runs, visit & Kevin Ball TulsaReiningClassic.com. w October 2017 SouthWest Horse Trader

National Cutting Horse-Sanctioned Event Coming to Brazos County

The Brazos County Expo Complex will be bursting at the seams the week of October 3rd through the 8th, as the Michelle Lynn Holsey Foundation begins its annual National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA)-sanctioned six-day cutting at the Brazos County Expo Complex, in Bryan/College Station. The event has experienced phenomenal growth since its creation in 2006, and moved to Brazos County in order to accommodate the ever-increasing number of competitors who will be coming from all across the U.S., and will be vying for prize money, belt buckles, and Jeff Smith champion saddles. For 2017, there is in excess of $52,300 added money. FINDING FRIENDS ON THE TRAIL

Contributed by Twylight Allison

Have everything you need for a trail ride except someone to go with you? Many of us have been in the same situation. There are several ways to meet other trail riders and learn about exciting riding opportunities. There are also a few things to consider when riding with others to make your ride enjoyable. Social media is one of the best ways to connect with other like-minded riders. If you live near a place with equine trails, most likely there is a Facebook page with information about it. Many times, other riders will post when and where a group is planning to ride. Once you have joined the Facebook group, you can also post when you would like ride, and invite others. When riding with new people, find out some basics about their riding. Some riders have gaited horses that will ride at a quick pace, while other non-gaited horses will be slower. Ask if they plan to walk, trot, and/or lope. You don’t want to get with a group that is conditioning their endurance horse if you want a leisurely trail ride. Finally, determine the length that is planned. This will help you decide how much water and snacks to pack. There are many clubs and trail riding organizations that will connect you with others. Texas Equestrian Trail Rider’s Association (TETRA) has many organized, group trail rides each year in all parts of Texas. The Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC), Texas Endurance Riders Association (TERA), American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) and North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) all host rides each and many offer several clinics each year. These organizations offer new riders a mentor to partner with at their first ride, and novice and seasoned trail riders are all welcome. w

Fort Worth Dressage Club News

The Fort Worth Dressage Club (FWDC) is a club devoted to dressage and dressage activities for its members. We work throughout the year to provide educational opportunities and fun activities for our members. FWDC holds monthly meetings at Szechuan Chinese Restaurant off Bryant Irving the 4th Monday of every month at 6:30 PM. Everyone is welcome. Our website is www.fortworthdressageclub.com Please check out our pages, we have pictures of members at different activities and our latest happenings. FWDC sends out a monthly newsletter and group e-mails to members to keep them informed of club activities and other dressage events in the community. Let me know if you would like a dressage event added to our calendar. Several members attended the Region 9 Summer meeting and had a productive day reconnecting with our 5 state members of other dressage clubs. In August, FWDC held an education day at Laurie McDonald discusses proper fellow member’s barn, saddle fit. Mary Louise Taylor.

This month the North American Trail Ride Conference is partnering with the Arabian Horse Association to offer the AHA Region 9 Competitive Trail Championship ride at the LBJ Grasslands on October 21-22 in Decatur, Texas. The event features approximately 60 miles over two days of competition with divisions for Purebred and for Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arab teams. There is also a traditional NATRC Competitive Trail Ride offered simultaneously for all breeds, featuring six divisions and weight classes, including a one-day competition covering 16 miles of trail. More information is available on www.natrc4.org or from Ride Secretary Elaine Swiss on 830825-3032. w

Member Pam Kemp organized our event. We had a saddle fitter, Nutrena feed specialist, equine massage therapist and leg bandaging specialist. Our saddle fitter, Laurie McDonald, brought in Debra Sue Waters different saddles and explains bandaging, when to use it and explained the importance of a proper fit how to do it correctly. for both horse and rider. Nutrena feed specialist, Kirk Chilson, went over different feeds and how they keep a horse’s topline at its optimum. Mary provided her horse for the massage demonstration and we all could see how much the horse enjoyed the massage. Casey McMehon explained what she was doing so we could see the benefits of massage for all horses. Our bandaging expert, Debra Sue Waters, is a nationally rated Pony Club tester and she demonstrated different types of bandages: standing, support, emergency. It was a very productive day and all attended came away with a better understanding of saddle fitting, feed, massage and bandaging. Then of course we had a fabulous pot luck dinner. Next up is our Region 9 Championships and our ever popular camp! Join FWDC and learn more about the wonderful sport of dressage. WE welcome all levels of riders on all breeds of horses! w

Losses Tonya Gilliam Kilgore was killed August 7 in Jefferson. She loved horses and was a past member, officer, and board member of West Louisiana Barrel Racing Association.

Jerry Key, 75, Weatherford, passed away August 19. He trained cutting horses and was active for decades in the NCHA and the ACHA. In 2001, he was inducted into the ACHA Open Rider Hall of Fame. He particularly enjoyed watching young cutters grow up, thus he was quite involved with the National Youth CHA. Family recommended that memorial donations be made to the Jerry Key Youth Sponsorship, NCHA Charities Foundation, c/o the Youth, 260 Bailey Ave, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Frenchy Jet, age 30, was euthanized August 24 by owner Nick Pernokas, Stephenville. Pernokas bought the William Burrustrained gelding 19 years ago, and the duo won the 1999 AQHA amateur breakaway-roping highpoint title. They also enjoyed much success in the USCRA and the PRCA.

We Be Jettin, an amazing AQHA all-around gelding, was euthanized August 28 at the age of 31. Joetta Meredith Bell bought the buckskin in 1994 and they made an unforgettable team. He racked up almost 2,000 AQHA points plus 5 AQHA world championships, 3 in horsemanship and 2 in showmanship.

Bob Byrd, 88, Jayton, died September 8. In 1964, he owned and rode Miss Ginger Dee, NCHA Futurity Co-Champion, the only time in history there was ever a tie in that event. Memorials may be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch or the charity of choice. w

A Combination of Colors are Coming to Tulsa

The Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. is proud to welcome the largest color breed horse show in the world. Colored horses from three different associations will gather for the Color Breed Congress, November 311 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at the Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Color Breed Congress encompasses three separate breed shows into one. The participating breeds include: the Pinto Horse Association, Palomino Horse Breeders of America and the Appaloosa Horse Club In addition to specific breed classes, exhibitors will get the chance to compete against one another in the Champion of Champion classes. These classes are designed for winners of certain youth, amateur, and open classes to compete against one another for the true color champion in their respective breed and category. With an award budget of well over $150,000, awards will be abundant during the show. Awards will include: jackets from Tioga Territory for class champions (with three or more entries), medallions for 1st-10th place in each class, Gist Silversmith custom belt buckles and Kensington Protective Products for high point winners. Scholarships will be given this year to high point overall youth winners within each breed. The scholarships will be redeemable upon enrollment in college. Shorty’s hats will be awarded to reserve high point overall youth winners within each breed. “Every year we are pleased to give out great awards to our exhibitors,” said Darrell Bilke, PtHA Exec. VP and Chief Operating Officer. “The association would like to thank our Corporate Sponsors; we would not be able to have such a fantastic show without their support.” The Cash Challenge classes will sure to be a success again, with an estimated purse of $15,000! In addition to the breeds at the show, horse registered as the following can participate: APHA, APHA Solid Paint-Bred, ABRA and POAC. National Snaffle Bit Association dual approved classes are offered in the

Pinto, Palomino and Appaloosa breed show, including solid classes. The NSBA classes allow exhibitors to gain points in both associations, as well as to compete for more prize money. This year, the Mule & Donkey Congress Show will be held November 3-5, in conjunction with the Color Breed Congress. “We are excited to have the Mule & Donkey Congress once again,” Bilke said. The Mule & Donkey Congress will consist of an array of classes ranging from Donkey Pleasure Driving to Mule Barrels. Exhibitors will vie for high point and reserve high point buckles. Tioga Territory jackets will be awarded to first place winners of each class (with three or more entries) and medallions for first-tenth place. The youth high point overall winner between the Mule and Donkey division will receive a scholarship and the overall reserve youth winner will receive a Shorty’s Hat. Besides the horse competition, over 30 vendors will be in attendance at the CBC Marketplace selling everything from clothing to decorations to equipment for showing horses. This is a great time to do some shopping since the holidays are approaching. The pre-entry deadline for both shows is October 10.
