Baskerville himself was a tombstone engraver before he started his own printing press in England. His penmanship talents are echoed in the strokes and embellishments of his printed typeface. The guiding principles in his work were simplicity, elegance and clarity. The typeface designed that bears his name is considered one of the most pleasing of the great classical fonts. The typeface is categorized as a transitional serif font

with strong contrast between thick and thin bars as the lines bend, cross and twist. Baskerville was inspired to create a typeface with rounded bracketed serifs and a vertical axis due to the cold fonts in use during his day. Baskerville typeface received criticism for being too simple, the delicate and TOO PERFECT. To achieve this perfect font, John Baskerville created an intense black ink color that developed a higher standard for

Having been an early admirer of the beauty of letters, I became insensibly desirous of contributing to the perfection of them. I formed to myself ideas of greater accuracy than had yet appeared, and had endeavoured to produce a set of types according to what I conceived to be their true proportion.”
