ew schools have as rich and illustrious a swimming history as The Bolles School. The 1,800-student college preparatory school in Jacksonville, Fla., has developed scores of Olympians and produced legendary names in the high school record books over the past three decades. Under the leadership of Coach Sergio Lopez, now starting his sixth season at Bolles, a new trail was blazed in early November 2012 at the Florida Division 1A High School Championships. Bolles walked away with a convincing victory in the state team title race, but what will be remembered most are the five overall national high school records (100 yard backstroke, 100 butterfly and all three relays) and two independent school records (50 and 100 freestyle) set in Orlando. It was the first time ever that a school had broken all three national high school relay records in the same meet. Those record swims were more than enough for Bolles to secure a fifth Swimming World Magazine overall boys’ team title. And it’s the eighth time the school has finished as the top independent school in the nation, a

distinction that dates back to 1998. The win was a runaway, with Bolles scoring 177 points to Regis Jesuit’s 110. Campolindo High School was the top public high school in the nation, scoring 106 points for third place overall. Bolles’ run through the national high school record books started in the preliminary heats at the Florida state meet. Ryan Murphy, who tied with Our Lady of Good Counsel’s (Md.) Jack Conger for Swimming World Magazine’s 2013 Male High School Swimmer of the Year, broke the overall national record in the 100 yard back with a 45.34, taking down David Nolan’s 45.49 from 2011. Murphy elected to chase the record in prelims to have the energy to swim his best on the 400 free relay in finals. In the opening event of finals, the 200 medley relay, Murphy led off with a blazing 21.09 on the backstroke leg, a time that was faster than all of the backstroke leadoff swims at the 2012 NCAA meet and four of the top eight at the 2013 championships. With that, the record was destined to fall. Joseph Schooling, known internationally as a butterflyer, stepped up for breaststroke and split a very respectable 25.48. Josh Booth swam butterfly and posted a 21.81 split, while — continued on 10 September 2013

boys’ high school — continued from 9 Santo Condorelli anchored the relay with a 19.64 freestyle leg. The relay time of 1:28.02 beat the 1:29.79 national record set in 2009 by a Bolles team that also included Murphy on the backstroke leg. Bolles now has the only swims under 1:30 in high school history. Schooling, a 2012 Olympian for Singapore, also posted the fastest high school time ever in the 100 fly with his 46.50 taking down the overall national record of 46.64 set nine months earlier by Maclin Davis of Montgomery Bell (Tenn.). Bolles was the clear winner in the 200 free relay with a national record of 1:19.27, the first prep swim ever under 1:20. Murphy got things started with a 19.54 leadoff leg, breaking the independent school record of 19.74 previously held by Giles Smith (McDonough, Md.) since 2009, but it wasn’t fast enough to beat Vlad Morozov’s (Torrance, Calif.) overall record of 19.43. Murphy’s teammates averaged 19.91 to break the national relay mark they had set a month earlier by 1.6 seconds. With Murphy cruising through the finals of the 100 back with a 48.08 to win the state title, he was ready to lead off Bolles in the 400 free relay, his final high school race. Murphy’s 42.95 was another independent school record, but it would only last a few months. Condorelli (43.11), Booth (44.67) and Schooling (43.70) followed Murphy to put the record in the 400 free relay into “untouchable” status. Their 2:54.43 bettered the previous overall record of 3:00.68 (Saratoga, Calif., 2009) by a whopping 6.25 seconds! REST OF THE BEST Bolles wasn’t the only school to put new entries in the boys’ high school record book. Conger set an overall national record in the 500 free, breaking Jeff Kostoff’s 30-year-old mark (4:16.39) with a 4:13.87. He also posted the fastest 100 free of the year—a 42.81 400 free relay leadoff split that broke Murphy’s short-lived independent school mark. Curtis Ogren, now beginning his senior year at Mountain View St. Francis (Calif.), broke the independent school record in the 200 IM in May, his 1:45.01 good enough for the top time in the country. And in Michigan, Saline High School teased the 1:30 barrier in the 200 medley relay, posting a 1:30.26 in prelims and 1:30.01 10

in finals. Both times bettered the public school mark of 1:30.27 (Hershey, Pa., 2010). Stephen Stumph’s record-breaking performance in the 100 breast helped Campolindo to its highest ranking in the national team standings. Stumph, an incoming freshman at the University of Southern California, was one of three swimmers under the national mark in the 100 breast at the California North Coast Section Championships with a 53.39. He also contributed a 47.88 in the 100 fly, good for a tie for ninth nationally, and helped give his school top-ten swims in the 200 medley relay (third) and 400 free relay (seventh). Sven Campbell also scored points for Campolindo, placing 10th in the 50 free (20.33) and fourth in the 100 back (47.65). Regis Jesuit in Colorado, also the alma mater of Missy Franklin, had two stars bring its team to a runner-up finish. Clark Smith chased the national high school record in the 100 fly, coming up just short with a 46.54, but good enough for second-place points nationally behind Schooling. Smith, who will start his freshman year at the University of Texas, was fourth in the 100 free (44.04). Hennessey Stuart, an incoming senior at Regis, placed fifth in the 100 back (47.80) and helped on relay duty as Regis placed 16th in the 200 medley, second in the 200 free and fifth in the 400 free relays. Also making a run at the overall national record in the 100 fly was Mundelein High’s (Ill.) Connor Black, whose 46.71 was good enough for the public school record. With Murphy’s 50 freestyle relay leadoff (19.54) not counted in the Swimming World standings due to event limitations, Black’s 19.80 gave him the top spot in the 50 free nationally. Turning in the top national time in the 200 free was Reed Malone. The New Trier High School (Ill.) graduate and current freshman at USC posted a 1:35.60, just 9-hundredths ahead of Los Osos’ (Calif.) Kyle Coan’s 1:35.69. v

Carmel High School (Ind.) captured Swimming World Magazine’s girls’ national high school championships— its second title in the last three years— on the strength of its relay teams.

wimming may seem like it’s an individual sport— especially when it’s just you up on the blocks all by yourself, racing against the clock and also trying to get to the wall faster than any of your opponents. But the girls from Carmel High School’s (Ind.) swim team know better. It’s all about team—specifically, its relay teams! Carmel’s three relays finished first, second and sixth in the nation, scoring 100 of its 118 points in those three events to win Swimming World Magazine’s girls’ national high school championships. After tying Baylor School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) for first place in the team standings in 2011, Carmel fell out of the overall top 10 in 2012, scoring only 39 points for an eighth-place finish among public schools. But the Greyhounds bounced back to beat JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), which tallied 111-1/3 points. Meanwhile, Baylor, which had won three of the last four national titles, slipped to seventh overall and fourth among independent schools. Carmel, which claimed its 27th straight state title last February, posted the top time nationally in the 200 yard medley relay, clocking 1:41.17 with a team of senior Lacey Locke, sophomore Alex Clarke, senior Ariana Bullard and freshman Veronica Burchill. It missed the public school record (Holland, Mich., 2011) by just 6-hundredths of a second and the overall national mark (Carondelet, Calif., 2011) by 44-hundredths. Junior Hanna House, freshman Claire Adams, Burchill — continued on 16 September 2013

and Bullard then finished second in the 200 free relay (1:32.97), a little more than a half-second behind JSerra’s Kaitlyn Albertoli, Karli Thuen, Rebecca Millard and Katie McLaughlin (1:32.35), who shattered the time these same four girls had swum the previous year (1:34.50). All but Millard (who graduated) will return to JSerra for their junior seasons. To close out the championship meet, Carmel’s Burchill, House, Adams and Locke raced to a 3:23.37 in the 400 free relay to rank sixth. Individually, Adams, only 14, was the breakout star for Carmel. She set the Indiana state record in the 100 back with a 53.40, which placed her fourth nationally. Bullard was Carmel’s other individual event scorer, finishing 14th in the 100 fly. THREE’S A CHARM Besides the battle for the team championship, the 201213 high school swimming season will also be remembered for the number of records that were broken: 11 national high school records (nine independent and two public), including seven overall national marks. Perhaps the most intriguing event when it came to records was the 400 free relay. The overall national high school record in the event just wouldn’t stay put—it was bettered an astonishing three times within three months. In February, the girls at Germantown Academy (Pa.) got things started with a 3:21.63, an effort that kept the relay record in the Germantown family (temporarily, anyway), as sophomore Shannon McKernan, junior Meagan Dollard, sophomore Madison Visco and senior Rachel Zilinskas took down their school’s 2006 mark of 3:22.34. However, they had limited time to celebrate before a quartet of West-coast girls lowered the national record. In May, Albertoli, Thuen, Millard and McLaughlin from JSerra—the same four girls who ranked No. 1 in the 200 free relay—won the 400 free relay at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Championships in 3:21.20. Finally, just a week later up the California coast, Carondelet shattered the national standard at the CIF Northern Section Championships. Senior Chelsea Chenault,

junior Natalie Amberg, freshman Maddie Murphy and senior Madison White put together a jaw-dropping 3:20.42, thanks in part to Chenault’s quick 49.27 leadoff leg. Although not quite as impressive as setting three overall national records in one event in the same season, three national independent school records were broken in the 200 IM—still, quite an accomplishment! With Kathleen Hersey (Marist School, Ga.) setting the standard of 1:57.41 in 2008, senior Missy Franklin (Regis Jesuit, Colo.) took the first opportunity to better the mark when she clocked 1:56.85 in February. Senior Kaitlyn Jones (Tatnall School, Del.) followed with a 1:56.31 in March, with Ella Eastin (Crean Lutheran, Calif.)—only a sophomore—putting on the finishing touches with her 1:55.15 in May. SMOLIGA AND LEDECKY While six of this past season’s 11 national high school records were set—and reset—in just two events, the other five were spread out more evenly among four events. But only two swimmers were responsible for the record breaking: senior Olivia Smoliga (Glenbrook South, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Ledecky (Stone Ridge, Md.). Smoliga, who was featured in last month’s Swimming World Magazine as its Female High School Swimmer of the Year, set two overall national high school records. Her 51.43 in the 100 fly bettered the 2010 time of 51.53 set by Eden Prairie’s Rachel Bootsma, the current 50 meter backstroke American record holder. She also became the first girls’ prep swimmer to crack 22 seconds in the 50 free with her 21.99, bettering Kara Lynn Joyce’s (Pioneer, Mich., 2002) 22.04 standard that remained untouched for 10 years. Ledecky, an Olympic gold medalist and world record holder who just turned 16 last March, bettered the overall national high school record twice in the 500 free (4:33.14p and 4:31.38) at the D.C. Metro Championships in February as well as the independent school record in the 200 free (1:42.96)—just missing Dagny Knutson’s (Minot, N.D.) overall record set in 2008 by 15-hundredths of a second. Kate Ziegler (Bishop O’Connell, Va.) held the previous overall record in the 500 with a 4:33.35 from 2006. NO. 1 PERFORMERS The remaining girls who ended the 2012-13 high school season atop their individual events in Swimming World’s national championships were junior Janet Hu of Oakton, Va. (100 free, 48.90), freshman Lindsey Horejsi of Albert Lea, Minn. (100 breast, 1:00.16) and junior Danielle Nack of Mankato West, Minn. (100 fly, 52.41). v

THE SUB-3:00 SUPER SIX

L

photos provided by the bolles school

Six high school relay teams from only three schools—Bolles (3), New Trier (2) and Peddie (1)—have swum faster than three minutes in the 400 yard freestyle relay since Bolles became the first to do it in 1991.

ast February, the Peddie School (Hightstown, N.J.) became only the third high school team in history to dip under the three-minute barrier in the 400 yard freestyle relay, swimming at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships in Philadelphia. Patrick Park (45.56), Bradley Cline (44.56), Joshua Daniel (45.59) and Michael Nunan (44.27) clocked an amazing 2:59.98. Let’s grasp that for a second. Only three high schools have fielded teams that have gone under three minutes since the barrier was broken 22 years ago—even in that crazy techsuit season of 2008-09. That shows how difficult it is for a high school to find four boys to average 100 yards of freestyle in 44.99 seconds or faster. The swim by Peddie came 21 years and two weeks after the first team broke three minutes—and it was done in the same pool at La Salle University. HISTORY MADE IN 1991 In 1991, the Bolles School traveled from Jacksonville, Fla., to Philadelphia to participate in the Easterns, a meet that has exclusively featured private high schools for 113 years. Bolles had already completed its high school season in

20

Florida, where the relay team swam a 3:01.68 in November 1990 to break the national high school record. Easterns was to be a bonus meet, another chance at greatness. And what a meet it was. Unable to match Peddie’s depth that year, Bolles didn’t walk away with the boys’ team title. Peddie was so good that it garnered its second consecutive national championship title from Swimming World Magazine by two points over Bolles. But it was that 400 free relay that would stand the test of time, becoming the magical benchmark for every high school team for the next two decades. Gustavo Borges, the Brazilian sprinter who was on a trajectory that would lead him to the Olympic podium the following year, started things off with a 43.85 leadoff. That time was, for about two weeks, the fastest time ever swum by a high schooler—until Joe Hudepohl swam a 43.54 at the Ohio State Championships. With Borges’ opening split, anything was possible, and Matt Guyot followed with a 45.30, putting the squad’s average at 44.56. Enrico Linscheer was third, and his split of 45.40 kept the team under the 44.99 average (thanks to Borges’ monster leadoff). At this point, Bolles was at 2:14.55. Anchor swimmer Charlie Santostefano “only” needed to swim a 45.44 to get under three minutes. He split 45.43. Bolles’ final time: 2:59.98.

September 2013

Borges went on to have the brightest career among the four relay mates. He won multiple NCAA championships for the University of Michigan, helping them to a team title in 1995. At the 1992 Olympics, just 17 months after the historic relay, Borges beat defending champion Matt Biondi to earn silver in the 100 free behind Russia’s Alex Popov. He won three more Olympic medals in 1996 and 2000. Guyot, Linscheer and Santostefano went on to compete at the University of Florida, while Linscheer represented Suriname at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. SUB-3:00 REMOVED FROM RECORD BOOKS The bar was set high for future generations, and no one was able to get under three minutes for 21 years—though not for a lack of trying. The closest anyone could get before the turn of the century was 3:01.80, and that was done twice in 1999. A foursome from St. Francis DeSales in Toledo, Ohio, posted that time in February, followed by a team from Bolles later that year in November. It appeared that 2:59.98 would stand for an eternity as the national high school record in the 400 free relay—until the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA), the organization that ratifies national high school records, removed the time from the record books in 2008. It was determined that the time would not stand as the official record because the swim was done outside Bolles’ normal high school season, which ended in November 1990. That meant the shared times of 3:01.80 by DeSales and Bolles would stand as the official times going into the 2008-09 high school season. At least Bolles had some comfort knowing the school would still be on the record list. The Bolles swim of 1991 remained the benchmark, even if it was not the official standard, though it was expected to be surpassed by the end of the 2009 high school season, thanks to the introduction of

techsuits. But no school was able to gather four swimmers fast enough, though Saratoga High School got closer than any other school had with a 3:00.68, which became the new national record. NEW STANDARD SET...FOUR TIMES! But in 2012, it finally happened— not once, but four times. New Trier High School, a public school just outside Chicago with a rich swimming tradition, swam a 2:59.76 at the Illinois State Championships on Feb. 24. Sam Skinner (46.09), Reed Malone (44.79), Jack Mangan (44.90) and Max Grodecki (44.04) chipped away at the 44.99 average needed to break three minutes, not getting under it until Grodecki’s swim. About a month later at the NCSA Junior Nationals, the same foursome stepped up in the event and went even faster, posting a 2:58.20 in Orlando, Fla., in prelims. The time was not counted as a national high school record because it was not done at a high school meet and was performed outside the normal high school season. But it became the new benchmark for high school teams. During an untapered and unshaved high school meet on Oct. 6, the Bolles School offered a stunning preview of the great performances that were to come at the end of the season with two national high

school relay records. Most stunning was the 2:58.58 in the 400 free relay, erasing the official record set by New Trier. With Ryan Murphy, Joseph Schooling, Santo Condorelli and Josh Booth not in peak condition in October, the swimming community anxiously awaited the Florida State Championships, where the sky was the limit for the Bolles foursome. The day was one that will be forever remembered in the halls of the Bolles School, and one that made history in more ways than one. But in that 400 free relay, the same foursome who broke the record unshaved made the record nearly impossible to reach, putting up a 2:54.43 that would have placed seventh at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Murphy kicked things off with a 42.95, which at the time was a national independent school record for the 100 free. With a leadoff swim of that caliber, destiny seemed to take over. Condorelli was second, splitting a 43.11, followed by Schooling’s 44.67. Booth provided a strong anchor leg in 43.70. The 2:59.98 that Bolles swam in 1991 lasted more than two decades. Now that same school has thrown down the gauntlet with its superb 2:54.43. This record may last just as long as the 1991 record did...or even longer! v September 2013

ick Jochums espoused the warrior society, a philosophy rooted in the Greek concepts of agon (struggle) and its relationship to arete (victory). So did his most successful swimmers, among them George DiCarlo, Bruce Furniss and especially Tim Shaw. It was a system he sold by asking his athletes daily to be the best they could be. They did so through high-quality training at race speed rather than the popular mega-yardage regimen of the era. The results spoke for themselves. During his career, Shaw set nine world records in distances from 200 to 1500 meters, won two Olympic silver medals (one in water polo), three World Championships and three NCAA titles. In 1975, Shaw was the Sullivan Award winner, bestowed upon the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete, while holding global standards in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle. Jochums’ methods, honed in Long Beach, are still used today and practiced by a number of coaches, including those who have worked with Olympic and world champion Sun Yang. The hall of fame coach sold a system to his swimmers that included training specificity, workload measurement through pulse rates, season-long insistence upon improved technique, swimmer self-analysis of stroke and embracing of pain. He also favored building strength in swimmers, not by lifting weights, but through pulling, which also served as a recovery aid. “My system was really simple,” Jochums says. “We were really the first people to put quality and fast swimming together on a consistent basis.” An acerbic soul, Jochums earned a doctorate in physical education from Cal and acquired his practical aquatic knowledge from, among others, John Tallman, Pete Cutino, Don Gambril and George Haines. “I stole something from

22

everyone I ever worked for,” he acknowledges. No one was more important to that learning curve than Shaw, whose meteoric career was eventually shortcircuited through poor dietary habits and Jochums’ demanding training practices. “What made Tim great was that he liked to work. He liked to test himself,” says Jochums. That meant 11 and eventually 12 practices a week. “DiCarlo and Tim had the highest tolerances for pain I have ever seen. Period. Both had no speed, but could swim fast within their stroke counts. “DiCarlo used to say, ‘Come hurt with me.’ He was going to win by hurting you. He’d get into your brain by just being there. It was the warrior concept,” says Jochums. “I don’t care how good you are, there is pain involved. And the people who know how to handle pain have a better chance of winning. “Tim worked hard every day,” adds Jochums. “He could adapt, worked well on short rest and was a master at descending sets. He loved to compete, race and wanted to

“I don’t care how good you are, there is pain involved. And the people who know how to handle pain have a better chance of winning.” finish knowing that was as good as he could have done. He loved the friendship part of swimming, but hated being No. 1. He just didn’t want the attention.” Another Jochums art was swimmer management. When he had two outstanding athletes, he was careful to adjust individual workouts. “There were things I could do with Tim that I couldn’t do with Bruce. “I learned you don’t train great against great. You have workouts where each can dominate slightly. Eventually, when the tougher of two kids emerges, you separate them and don’t let them train together anymore. That way, you end up with two champions instead of one. “That’s what I did with Shaw and Furniss, DiCarlo and Doug Towne, Kurt Grote and Tom Wilkins.” v Michael J. Coaches Gregg Troy, Michael Brooks and Tony Batis discuss how swimmers can strengthen a weak stroke to win the 200 IM.

C

al’s Teri McKeever says that Gregg Troy is the best IM coach in the world. So is it any wonder that a highly successful Michael Brooks at the York (Pa.) YMCA shares some of Troy’s views on training and swimming

the 200 IM? At April’s YMCA National Championships, two of Brooks’ swimmers, 14-year-old Meghan Small (meet record, 1:58.85) and 17-year-old Niki Price finished 1-2 in the event. “I’m a big believer that all age group programs should be medley-oriented,” says Troy. “No matter how good you are in one thing, you can benefit from swimming all four strokes.” Why? “Because as bodies develop, strokes that might have once been the best or weakest can change dramatically,” he says. “From an age group standpoint, that is very important.” At Bolles and at the University of Florida when Troy found a medley candidate, he devoted blocks of training time to strengthen the swimmer’s weakest stroke, treating it as if it were the swimmer’s primary stroke. They then rotated through the other strokes based on observations made in competition. “In high school, it might be a three-to-12-week training cycle. We were always cycling through blocks, training segments that could vary by season or time available. Looking more long-term, you might vary by a year or a half, depending upon the individual and his goals. “To me the biggest problem comes when you identify a weak stroke. Athletes drill it, do technique work, swim it, 24

but they don’t train it. I tell my medley swimmers if your weak stroke is backstroke, then you need to train with the backstrokers on backstroke day and on the backstroke intervals—not some special interval because you are a weak backstroker,” he says. In Brooks’ program, everyone is expected to work his or her weakest strokes. “One’s best stroke may be 99 percent as good as it is going to be while the weakest may be only 50 percent of optimal. That represents the opportunity for greatest improvement,” he says. Brooks does a lot of major/minor stroke training as opposed to straight IM. Extra practices are devoted to weak stroke, but the critical ingredient to a swift 200 IM is “swimming fast in practice. For us, all four strokes are training strokes. Everybody is expected to do the program, so you can’t get out of breaststroke just because you are terrible,” he says. AREAS OF FOCUS At Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics, head coach Tony Batis treats weak strokes as “areas of focus,” especially in the fall when his swimmers train all strokes. When athletes are given choices, they are encouraged to swim their weak stroke. “We want them to believe that all strokes are improving and that we are continually working on minimizing the gap between their strongest and weakest stroke,” he says. From a technical standpoint, Batis looks to Ikkos, a video stroke system that allows coaches and swimmers to watch strokes in slow motion and make technical adjustments to movements in the water. “It is important that the foundation of what you are trying to create is emphasized early and often,” he says. “Mentally, we stress that all strokes need to be proficient, and we are on a continuous journey to make it happen. Some athletes will eliminate their weak stroke quickly, while others will take a lot longer. In either case, you are still striving to refine and improve what they are working on.” Is there an Achilles heel for IMers? Brooks suggests it is breaststroke, mainly because those who struggle are often plagued by a lack of hip, knee and ankle flexibility. “It’s usually not the pull that is the problem, but the kick,” says Brooks. “Swimmers can improve by judicious

September 2013

SWSeptember.indd 24

8/19/13 2:34 PM

“I’m a big believer that all age group programs should be medley-oriented. No matter how good you are in one thing, you can benefit from swimming all four strokes.” — Gregg Troy stretching and making the best of what they have as opposed to taking the day off when they have a breaststroke kick set.” Batis thinks of breast as the stroke most beneficial to a good or great IMer. “You can disguise most weak strokes in an IM, but a bad breaststroke is hard to overcome. It is the launching point for the back half of your race and a place where a strong move can be made,” he says. TRANSITION SWIMMING Brooks and Troy believe that the stroke right before one’s weak stroke is critical. “You do not want two weak strokes together. So whatever is happening right before your weak stroke better be good because you want to be going into the weak stroke from a position of strength,” says Brooks. “We do a lot of transition swimming,” says Troy. “I think the weak stroke is not always what it appears to be. Many times people say, ‘I’ve got a weak breaststroke,’ but when you pull them out of the medley and they swim breaststroke, they are mechanically sound and they do the right things, but the breast split on the IM is not what it needs to be.” There can be three reasons for that, observes Troy. “Some people just don’t transition well from one stroke to another in any sort of rhythm. Others may not be physically fit enough to swim it. By breaststroke, they are just tired. That’s where just swimming and training more breaststroke makes a difference. “The third reason, and one that people often miss when the breaststroke mechanics are sound, is that they’ve swum butterfly so fast that they are worn out when they get to breaststroke. Their energy use in fly is not appropriate to the rest of the race. In order to get into the race, they are swimming faster fly than at any other time, and it shows up in the breaststroke leg. In that case,

the person’s weak stroke is butterfly—and very few IMers consider fly their weak stroke. The really good IMers control the fly leg. Those who go all out don’t get any benefit from it,” he says. A POWER EVENT Troy is adamant that the short course 200 IM is a sprint. “No two ways about it,” he says. “If an athlete really wants to swim the 200 IM, he can disguise almost every weakness because it is very much a power event. It is about transition turns. We tell all of our athletes if you are a weak breaststroker, you don’t have to do breaststroke in the IM, but you have to turn like a breaststroker. If you have a weak backstroke, you have to turn like a backstroker. “If you are really good with your turns and underwaters, so much of the race goes away that it is not a weakness. You can brute-force yourself to where you need to be. In the 400, you cannot get away with that.” In Gainesville, all Gator medley swimmers spend two mornings a week almost exclusively on backstroke and breaststroke. “To me, that is the succeed part of the race from a technical standpoint. What you do in the middle, how you manage your energy systems, turns and get to the next stroke is key,” Troy says. Troy recommends pulling for swimmers whose fly and back are the weakest parts of their medley. “You can pull those strokes a whole lot because the idea is to conserve energy in the front half and still be fast. You can learn that by pulling a lot of butterfly and especially backstroke. But you can’t pull it slow. You have to pull it fast so it is race-relevant,” he says. v Michael J. Stott, one of Swimming World Magazine’s USA contributors, is based in Richmond, Va. September 2013

what are some effective foot and ankle stretches?

DR. SHANNON ..

Here are four stretches that will help your feet and ankles.

achilles tendon stretch 1. Place the toes of your right foot on the wall with your heel about three inches from the wall.

3. To increase the stretch, open your feet just wider than hip-width apart. 4. Press the tops of your feet into the ground. 5. Sit with your bottom between your heels and angle your toes inward slightly.

lateral stretch 1. Hold onto a stable surface and put most of your weight into your left foot. 2. Gently bend your right ankle so the bottom of the foot is facing your left foot. You will feel a stretch on the outside of your right ankle. 3. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat three times. Repeat for the left foot.

2. Lean your body into the wall. You should feel a stretch in your Achilles tendon and calf. 3. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the left side.

intrinsic foot muscle stretch 1. Sit on the floor with your toes pointing straight up. 2. Curl your toes and point your feet. 3. Hold for a second or two, and then relax. 4. Next, separate your toes so they are as far apart as possible. 5. Hold for a few seconds, then repeat the point and separate 20 times. v

believe the core is one of the most important parts of the body. After all, it’s in the center of our bodies, right? It helps us with balance and body position in the water. It’s important for turns, and a tight core improves our kicking. So, what type of core exercises should one do to improve in these areas? Well, there are the traditional exercises we all have done: crunches, sit-ups, hip-ups, bicycle crunches, etc. In this article, I want to give us a few of the tougher, more swim functional core exercises. These are more difficult, but create a higher level of strength and function for swimming. Note how these core movements emulate part of a stroke and also improve rotational ability. Perform these exercises three days a week. Start with two sets of 15 reps and build to three sets after two weeks. Each exercise should be done with control and about two seconds per repetition. Faster is not better. Take a 60-second rest between sets. It will only be a matter of weeks before you notice a stronger core, resulting in better body position in the water, better turns and better and faster swims! v J.R. Guided by the Golden Rule, family values and a passion for coaching, UCSB’s Gregg Wilson has built an aquatic legacy at a Santa Barbara home he calls “paradise.” Q. Swimming World: Not many coaches go from graduation to their alma mater as an assistant swimming and water polo coach two months later... A. Coach gregg wilson: When I graduated in 1975 from Cal-Berkeley, I was extremely lucky to get the job at UCSB. Pete Cutino, legendary Cal swimming and Olympic water polo coach, really helped me. Nort Thornton, in his first year coaching the Cal men swimmers, allowed me to be an unpaid assistant while I was doing my graduate work. Those two men opened a lot of doors for me. I am a UCSB lifer with the exception of nine months during the 1993-94 academic year when I returned to Cal to be the aquatics director. Santa Barbara has been a wonderful place for me, my wife, Carol, and our three kids. We are very involved in the community and have had a successful swim lesson/camp business for the last 20 years. SW: How did you survive the UCSB “five-year floating bottom”? gw: The “floating bottom” policy was designed to save money. Minor sport head coaches and assistants were brought in and had to leave after a max of five years so new coaches could be hired for less money. It was antithetical to building a program, but the administration didn’t care. I worked hard at my teaching assignments and very hard at coaching. Head water polo coach Dante 30

GREGG WILSON Head Men’s and Women’s Coach University of California, Santa Barbara

Swimmer and water polo player Gregg Wilson (University of California, Berkeley, B.S., physical education, ’72; M.S., exercise physiology and kinesiology, ’75) is a self-described lifer. In his 37 years at UCSB, he has won 39 Big West Conference championships and 27 coach-of-the-year honors while compiling a dual meet record of 375-248-1. While he has coached Olympians Richard Schroeder, Bruce Stahl and Jason Lezak, he is best known for his passion, incomparable work ethic and devotion to his athletes while laboring in an underfunded environment. Plans are under way for a state-ofthe-art aquatic facility at UCSB that would stand as an appropriate legacy for his lifetime of service. Dettamonti didn’t want anything to do with swimming, so I assumed all the responsibility for the men’s swim team. My total budget for everything was $1,590 with no athletic grants. We went 0-9 my first year and had no conference championship meet. Only two of eight coaches survived the hire that year. I made it because I worked

long hours and had some great student-athletes and very good volunteer assistant coaches. SW: You have had great success with a shoestring budget and minimal coaching staff... gw: The early effort I put in with some great kids produced a winning atmosphere. The location of the school, the school’s academic reputation, a few lucky breaks and a lot of phone calls produced a good return on our invested time and energy. Long ago I resolved that I wasn’t going to get rich coaching. The quality of life in Santa Barbara and at UCSB has always been very high, and working with truly outstanding student-athletes has been rewarding. SW: Why did the UCSB administration reinstate diving when so many colleges are bagging teams altogether? gw: We dropped our very good diving program in the mid-1990s due to budget concerns. It hurt because our divers were good athletes and excellent students. We often lost (dual meets) because of not scoring any diving points. Finally, my requests for a diving program were granted, but I had to raise the part-time coach salary and get equipment. Our alumni, parents and community friends have supported us generously. SW: Did the diving reinstatement foreshadow university plans to build a new swimming and diving facility? gw: No, in fact I had to make sure that diving would be included. SW: Completion expected when? gw: No date, but we have plans and renderings. My 1983 team captain, Ken Radtkey, is the architect and has a wonderful vision for this state-of-the-art facility. All we need now is $10 million. SW: How does UCSB have such success in recruiting underthe-radar athletes such as Bruce Stahl, Richard Schroeder and Jason Lezak? gw: To recruit such elite-level athletes takes luck, a lot of hard work beating the bushes and making solid contacts with club coaches. Our campus is a strong selling point. We don’t have much money, but our athletes do improve and make nationals, NCAA and Olympic Trials. Ours is— and always has been—a developmental program. We can’t go out and buy national champions, but we have made some. SW: Sandy Neilson already had Olympic gold medals when she swam at Santa Barbara. Did you envision similar success for Schroeder and Lezak? gw: Sandy was special, and she just wanted to be in Santa Barbara. She will always be one of the greatest — continued on 32

hile swimming at UC Santa Barbara, Katy Freeman, a team captain and an NCAA All-American in the 200 breast, won 13 Big West Conference titles (seven individual events, six relays). In 2009, she was selected the school’s Female Athlete of the Year and the Big West ScholarAthlete of the Year while also winning a gold medal at the World University Games in the 400 medley relay. Following in her parents’ footsteps and preceding her brother as a UCSB swimmer, Freeman joined the Gauchos swim team as a freshman walk-on in 2006. She had qualified for “book money” by virtue of snaring a senior nationals breaststroke cut in her final high school (Carondelet, Concord, Calif.) meet. She had also competed eight years in synchronized swimming. At the recent U.S. summer nationals, the 26-year-old graduate (B.A., sociocultural linguistics, ’09) and UCSB’s current volunteer assistant coach, placed fourth in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:25.51) and sixth in the 100 (1:08.00). Head coach Gregg Wilson describes Freeman as “orderly, intelligent and extremely tough in championship meets.” In fact, in his 37 years of coaching, he singles out his Olympian Richard Schroeder and Freeman as the athletes who have taught him the most about breaststroke. “From technique to temperament, test sets to championships, the two are driven to perfection in and out of the pool and have been incredibly loyal to me, our program and our university,” says Wilson. “Katy has taught me how to achieve optimal breaststroke training, and the rest of my team has benefitted greatly from her ideas, presence, encouragement, expectations and toughness.” In practice, Freeman loves to pull, especially breaststroke. “She will do breast workouts, often two-tothree times a week, along with distance free sets two-tothree times a week,” says Wilson. “She thinks nothing of going three 1000s or ten 300s (freestyle) at least once a week. Katy utilizes a variety of drills for warm-ups, and during breaststroke specialty days, employs a lot of drills in preparation for competition.” v Total Access members click here at www.SwimmingWorldMagazine.com to see some of Katy Freeman’s sample sets as well as her progression of times.

Q&A

q&A — continued from 31 freestylers—beautiful stroke. I did not envision that Richard or Jason would be gold medal winners. Richard was on the Olympic team 22 months after coming to Santa Barbara—and it was all him: great focus, determination and work ethic. He just didn’t like to get beat. Jason was another story. I thought he could be good, but he limited himself. After two-plus years, I dismissed him from our program. We allowed him back after several reinstatement attempts, and he was a different person. I knew he could make the Olympics, but I really didn’t think he would be a national hero. Our relationship is excellent now, and he is an outstanding family man, but he had some growing up to do while he was at UCSB. Helping college student-athletes grow and learn is part of my job. SW: How have you created such an aura of family with your program? gw: I have my biological family and my university family. In reality, the university family has gotten the best of the day. But as much as I could, I have always included my team in my family life. My wife and I have worked at treating the athletes as adults, but also counseling them when needed. It is important to be an example of a family

32

man who adores his wife and kids. I have treated my athletes like I do my own children. The demands I put on my athletes are high, but the respect I give them is just as high. SW: What’s it take to be a successful coach in college? gw: A lot of everything! You have to be passionate, consistent, fair, confident and unconcerned about the hours involved. You have to establish and stay true to priorities for personal and professional growth. There are always good times and tough times, highs and lows, but never a dull moment. I believe in a good, long-term work ethic. Don’t be afraid to admit mistakes and take responsibilities for your actions and behavior. The Golden Rule is always a good guideline. v Michael J. Stott, one of Swimming World Magazine’s USA contributors, is based in Richmond, Va. Total Access members click here at www.SwimmingWorldMagazine.com to read more Q&A with Coach Gregg Wilson.

10 points of self - evaluation

hen it comes to self-evaluation, honesty is crucial. Keeping your self-esteem high can be healthy, but when you really want to get serious about improving your officiating, embellishing the truth is a false start. Here is a starting point for a complete self-analysis. Officials who review their recently completed work can learn a great deal. Only by recognizing past errors—and the situations in which they occurred—can officials take the necessary steps to avoid the same mistakes in the future. Don’t ever think your work is done when you walk off the deck. If you’re interested in improving as an official, you need to ask yourself the following 10 questions after every meet or contest. Keep in mind that the purpose of the questions is to alert you to any undesirable tendencies in your work or situations that are particularly troublesome to you. As a result, any question answered, “Yes,” should be followed by the companion questions, “Why?” and “In what situations?” You can only answer the questions about yourself. No one but you has access to your experiences. For that reason, complete honesty is a must if these questions are to be of any value. Let’s get started. 1. Did I blow any calls? 2. Were there any times when it was fortunate that I didn’t have to make a call? 3. Did I do everything I could to ensure a just outcome? 4. Were my calls/decisions consistent? 5. Did I fail to maintain proper control at any time? 6. When did I feel most vulnerable to outside influences? 7. Were there any situations where I avoided or usurped responsibility for a ruling at the expense of another official? 8. Was there anything about my signals, gestures or style that evoked an unexpected or unwanted response? 9. Did I uphold, defend or rationalize any improper rulings? 10. Was there a particular aspect of my performance that I could work on at the next meet? v

ack Neill has been a Potomac Valley Swimming official for 14 years and a referee for the past nine. He also has been a longtime member of the LSC’s officials committee. In 2008, on his own initiative, Neill started a newsletter for the LSC officials. As its editor and primary writer, he produces eight of them each year. In 2009, Neill was appointed the LSC officials chair by the PVS general chair. Despite the added responsibility, he continues to work more meets in the LSC than anyone. He is just as likely to show up at a mini-meet as at an LSC championship competition. He relishes his role as a mentor to trainee officials and can be seen working as a stroke-and-turn judge, chief judge or starter as often as he is a referee. Neill truly leads by example, and the quality of officiating in Potomac Valley is a tribute to that leadership. v

T

welve-year-old Seth Chun tied Swimming World Magazine’s Male High School Swimmer of the Year Ryan Murphy’s 11-12 200 meter butterfly national age group record at the Arizona Age Group State Championships, July 18-21, in Tempe, Ariz. Chun, who has been training with Arizona Gold Swimming’s head coach Jerry Olszewski, posted a 2:14.40, July 20, that shot him to the top of the age group rankings and turned a few heads in the process. Chun is now a full two seconds ahead of Yezan Alsader (2:16.67) from Waves Bloomington and 6 seconds ahead of Joshua Lee (2:20.18) from The Woodlands in the boys’ 200 butterfly age group rankings. Chun also won the boys’ 11-12 100 free (59.10), 200 free (2:08.64), 100 fly (1:02.21), 200 IM (2:25.07) and 400 IM (5:07.60) at the state meet. His 100 fly time places him in a tie for third with Alsader in the event’s 12-year-old top 10 rankings. He rode his state meet taper through to the 2013 Speedo Far Western Long Course Championships, July 31-Aug. 4, in San Jose, Calif. After an extended fourweek taper, Chun raced to a 2:15.01 in prelims and a 2:14.76 in finals, just off his time from two weeks earlier. Chun, who will age-up to the 13-14 age group this coming short course season, is already looking toward his next big goals, including taking down Michael Phelps’ historic 13-14 200 butterfly NAG record and

representing the USA as a 15-year-old at the 2016 Rio Olympics. “I want to try and make (the) 2016 (Olympics),” says Chun. “In order to do that, I think I need to break Michael Phelps’ 13-14 national record in the 200 fly at a 1:59. That’ll be a toughie.” It’s a challenge Chun is excited to pursue. If he earns a spot on the U.S. team at the Rio 2016 Olympics, he’ll be the same age as Phelps (15) was when he competed at the Athens 2000 Olympic Games. Age, however, isn’t an issue for Chun. His short-term goal is to break the Arizona state record in the boys’ 13-14 200 fly as a 13-year-old. The current record is held by Sun Devil Aquatic’s Kyle Ewoldt (1:53.77), who set the mark in 2011 at the Arizona Short Course Age Group State Championships. Chun will have to cut a considerable chunk of time off his personal best to achieve the mark—his best short course time is a 2:03.92, set at the 2013 Arizona Short Course Age Group State Championships last March. Chun has developed a system to track his goals and keep them at the forefront of his mind. When he set out to claim Murphy’s NAG mark at the beginning of the long course season, he wrote “2:14.40” on a piece of paper and tacked it to his wall—and that’s what he swam, which was good enough to tie the record. Maybe next time, Chun will write his goal times as a hundredth of a second faster than the current NAG records—just to make sure his is the only name beside those times in the record book! v September 2013

The 13-14 boys relay from Aquazot Swim Club out of Irvine, Calif. took down a historic 15-year-old national age group record in the 400 meter medley relay at the Junior Olympic Championships in Irvine, Calif., July 28. Andrew Knoell, Matthew Lee, Timmy Hanson and Sean Messer (pictured at left, L-R) raced to a 4:05.87—more than a second faster than the 4:06.98 set in 1998 by the Irvine NOVAquatics and tied in 2004 by Nova of Virginia. The original NOVAquatics team featured threetime Olympian Aaron Piersol, Jeff Heinz, Serbian Olympian Mike Cavic and Bryan Neff. The 2004 team that tied the former record included David Wren, Jordan Arencibia, Ian Vogt and Gaites Brown. Knoell led off the relay with a 1:02.32 backstroke split, followed by a 1:09.37 breaststroke leg from Lee and a 59.60 butterfly split from Hanson. Messer came home strong with a 55.58 freestyle anchor leg. v

TEAM QUEBEC SWEEPS FAR WESTERN RELAY RECORDS

Team Quebec’s 13-14 girls showed their depth at the 2013 Speedo Far Western Long Course Championships, July 31-Aug. 4, in San Jose, Calif., sweeping all five of their relays in meet record times. Two of the swimmers— Allyson Kis and Jullian Pauletto—swam on pictured > team quebec every record-breaking relay! dominated the relays at the Kis (13), Juliette Vermes-Monty (14), Irina 2013 far western long course Mitrea (14) and Pauletto (14) combined for championships . a 4:01.57 in the 400 meter freestyle relay on the first night of competition, bettering the previous 4:03.21 meet standard set by Crow Canyon Sharks in 2011. The second night saw Lily BellehumeurBechamp (14), Pauletto, Erica Dobby (13) and Kis come together for a 4:28.34 in the 400 medley relay, just under Palo Alto’s 2009 mark of 2:28.69. Kis, Pauletto, Vermes-Monty and Eliana Beaudry (14) made it three-forthree during the third night’s finals with a 1:50.24 in the 200 freestyle relay, nipping the 1:50.41 mark set in 2008 by Lake Oswego Swim Club. The next night, Quebec’s Kis, Daphne Danyluk (14), Pauletto and Stephanie Hussey (14) claimed the 800 free relay record in 8:44.89, nearly two-and-a-half seconds under the 8:47.04 set by the Terrapins in 2002. True to form on the last afternoon of finals, Danyluk, Pauletto, Beaudry and Kis rewrote the 200 medley relay meet record with a 2:01.30. The previous mark was 2:02.23 by Lake Oswego in 2008. v September 2013
