Fit to Be Tied Not only was Hershey High School’s (Pa.) David Nolan the runaway selection as Swimming World’s Male High School Swimmer of the Year, but many fans also believe he may be the greatest scholastic performer in history. At the two-day Pennsylvania high school state championships, Nolan established three individual national high school records, along with a scholastic relay record.
The Runners-up Andrew Kosic, Clay Youngquist and Maddy Schaefer had excellent high school swimming seasons, finishing as runners-up for Swimming World’s High School Swimmers of the Year awards.
Stanford Wins Bay-Area Showdown
G4 DigitalGuide-August2011NEW.indd 4
Stanford captured its second NCAA Division I women’s water polo title—and first since 2002—by beating conference rival Cal, 9-5, in the championship game. The Cardinal—led by Tournament MVP Annika Dries, who scored five goals in the championship game—finished the 2011 water polo season with a 28-1 overall record.
For the first time since 1996 when Swimming World first recognized a high school swimmer of the year, there is a tie. Rachel Bootsma and Jasmine Tosky are this year’s Female High School Co-Swimmers of the Year.
Pied Piper of the Pool What Coach Dave Salo has put together at Trojan Swim Club is inarguably the finest collection of aquatic talent in the world. He has attracted numerous elite athletes to come train with him in Southern California, including Olympic gold medalists, world titlists, NCAA champions— simply, the best of the best.
Some people do not believe they sweat while swimming, but research shows that they’re “all wet.” Swimmers, therefore, should stay hydrated before, during and after practice. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that “athletes should develop customized fluid retention plans to prevent excessive dehydration—more than a 2 percent loss in body weight.”

The Ultimate Partnership Doc Counsilman/Mark Spitz, Paul Bergen/Tracy Caulkins, Bob Bowman/ Michael Phelps represent some of the most successful pairings in U.S. swimming history. In each case, the relationships began as athlete improvement exercises and morphed into much more. Swimming World takes a closer look at three coach/swimmer relationships that have produced impressive results: Teri McKeever and Natalie Coughlin, Dave Durden and Nathan Adrian as well as Todd Schmitz and Missy Franklin.

Harrison Jones, a diver from the U.S., was banned for three months following his second positive test for cannabis. Meanwhile, water polo players James Stanton, Zsolt Lutter and Alex Gabriel Popoviciu were all hit with varying levels of suspensions due to positive tests.

Janet Evans on Comeback Trail After officially confirming the longstanding rumors that she was on the comeback trail, Janet Evans returned to competitive swimming at the Janet Evans Invitational to take down a pair of FINA Masters world records in mid-June. Hi, I’m Michael Phelps. I’ve been swimming just about my whole life and I know the benefits of swimming regularly. But sometimes access to a pool is limited and not every backyard or climate is right for a pool. That’s why Master Spas took my input and that of my coach, Bob Bowman, to create the perfect solution – the Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa by Master Spas.
