SWIM Fun Facts!

Swimming with Fins The use of fins is one way to improve your kick strength, ankle flexibility, and body position, while helping you go faster during swim practice. Fins or flippers come in different shapes and sizes. Here are some of the most commonly used fins:

Drill Seeker: Freestyle These five freestyle drills not only help you iron out your technique problems but add variety to your swim sessions too! *with inputs from PC A He ad Coach, Luica Dacanay

Catch-Up Pull with one arm at a time and touch your hands in a streamlined position out front between each alternating arm stroke. Make sure to maintain a consistent kick rhythm and concentrate on swimming in the front quadrant to keep a long, streamlined body position. *Emphasis: Body position and kick

Alternate Breathing (3-5-7-9) Start by breathing every third arm stroke on the first lap. Then progress to every fifth arm stroke, to seventh, and lastly, on the ninth to make a full set. Start over on the next set. Beginners can use fins to ensure kick efficiency and focus on synchronizing breathing technique to arm and head motions. *Emphasis: Breathing technique

Streamline Kicks Extend your arms out in front in a streamlined position, one hand over the other. Take a breath after 10 kicks or only when needed. Take it up a notch by keeping your head up the entire

lap while keeping your arms in a streamlined position. Beginners can use a kickboard. *Emphasis: Kick and core strength

Short/Small Bladed Fins Like the Zoomers, it allows you to maintain your foot speed closer to your regular foot speed without fins, with still enough extra surface area to give you more power.

Medium to Long Bladed Fins This type is best used for working on dolphin kicks and butterfly kicks. It offers more power from every kick and adds emphasis on the body and leg movement, but in the expense of an efficient/regular foot speed.

High Elbow Side Kicks Kick on your side with your bottom arm (the one facing towards the bottom of the pool) extended out in front, palms down, just below the surface of the water. The top arm (the one on the surface of the water) should be on the halfway position when doing the freestyle, elbows pointing up, where the fingertips are almost touching your brow line. Hold this position and rotate to the other side every after 6 kicks. Make sure that only half of your face is sticking out on the surface of the water, just enough to take a breath in the hold position. *Emphasis: Arm technique and body rotation

Side/Fingertip Drag Do your normal freestyle stroke. Try to trace the side of your body up to the armpit area with your fingertips and on the surface of the water on the recovery. *Emphasis: Arm position and hand-entry

Monofin/Single-Bladed Fin Offers a good tool to workout leg power since it helps develop the legs’ strength, abdominal and back muscles, and specifically for the efficiency of the butterfly kick (due to the emphasis on the undulating movement). Very long or vented, scuba style fins are not the advisable for swim workouts since its length and design cause very slow feet movement that prevents you from getting the specific benefits offered by shorter fins.

Sum these qualities up and you get incomparable dedication – something Kim Mangrobang and Axel Ngui have in common. Young, full of promise, and with bright futures ahead of them, Kim and Axel are both on their way to making their marks in swimming and triathlon respectively.

Triathlon Sweetheart Endurance sport, fit and strong physique, discipline, tough – these could just be some of the things that come into my mind when you hear the world triathlon. Would you believe that a 20-year old School of Fashion and the Arts is a certified triathlete? Kim Mangrobang is a perfect example that once you set a goal for yourself, nothing can stop you from achieving it with hard work, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn. Starting out as a swimmer for the Laguna Mako Sharks Swimming Team under National Triathlon Coach Abet Alon Alon, Kim also tried aquathlon before

Passions transitioning to triathlon. Her perseverance and never give up attitude earned Kim a spot in the National Triathlon Team – giving her the honor of representing our country in competitions around the world. Her trade secrets? Kim counts unwavering passion for the sport, preparation, and sacrifices as the most important things that helped her achieve her accomplishments. When asked about how she balances her fashion side and sporty side – Kim remarks that she owes it to discipline and time management.

Swimming Success In the case of 18-year old Axel Ngui, passion is best exemplified in the way he allots time for the sport he loves and excelling in school. Under the watchful eye of Coach Jonathan Villagracia, Axel trains and swims in preparation for different competitions. To date, he considers representing the Philippines in various competitions like the Southeast Asian Games, Asian School Games, and Asian Age Group. Though he dedicates time for swimming, Axel never neglects his studies. “Proving that I can be an honor student as well as an athlete drives me to study hard in school,” he shares. Axel

makes it a point to listen during lectures and ask questions so that when he gets home, he has time to rest and prepare for the next day. “A student/athlete should be hardworking, patient, respectful, humble, and can manage his or her time properly,” he exclaims. Motivated by the opportunity to compete in international events and the possibility of taking home a gold medal someday, Axel proves that nothing is impossible if you put your mind into it. Graduating from Xavier High School this March, the ace swimmer is still undecided as to what university he will be attending but has decided to take up BS Psychology.

How do you motivate your swimmers/team? RI: We have a white board where all their best times in their favorite strokes are written and each weekend we have a time trial and they have to beat them. Simple but effective. What do you think makes you a good/effective coach? RI: By understanding that each swimmer is different from each other, so you have to handle them and teach them in different ways. What’s your favorite part of being a coach? RI: As a former swimmer, my favorite part of coaching is passing all the knowledge I was able to learn from my years of swimming. Watching my swimmers win is a big fulfillment for me. What is your coaching philosophy? RI: “Hard work beats talent, when talent isn’t working hard” In your opinion, what makes a good swimmer? RI: A disciplined swimmer with determination and the will to win definitely makes a swimmer – a good swimmer.

Sports Nutrition Knows No Age By Harvie de Baron

There has been some debate as to whether nutrition is suited for all ages. Some say that nutrition is only reserved for the older ones who “need” it. While the younger ones (generally those below 15 years old) should not be monitored and be allowed to eat anything and everything they want given their age. We’ve all heard this before, “Bata pa naman, hayaan mo nalang mag-enjoy” (They are still kids, let them enjoy). But the truth is, proper nutrition should begin as soon as possible for several key reasons that would benefit any person at any age. Proper nutrition will give maximum vitamins and minerals to a child Giving your child the right food will also give them the right vitamins and minerals they need as they grow bigger. More often than not, we let our children indulge in junk food such as chips, chocolate, candy, burgers and French fries – these foods give empty calories to children and weaker immune system due to the lack of proper vitamins and minerals. Starting them off with the right food doesn’t deprive them of the supposed “good stuff”. In fact, you will help them avoid getting sick, overweight, and lethargic.

Proper nutrition will help promote overall health and growth Ask yourself if you are giving your child the chance to maximize their growth with what you are feeding them. The right food and diet will help them grow especially during the critical pre-teen and teenage years. Imagine a plant that doesn’t receive the right type of nutrients from the soil - chances are, its growth will be stunted compared to the other plant with nutritious soil. Same with our children, we need to feed them to support their growing years.

Start habits early Remember the saying “You cannot teach old dogs new tricks”? The same goes with food habits. Whatever habits you learn as a child, chances are you will bring them with you as you get older. So why make your children go through the difficult adjustment of eating healthy when they get

10

SWIM PHILIPPINES

older when you can start them young and decrease the risk of illnesses as a result of a poor diet. Begin by teaching them what food to avoid, what to eat in moderation and what they should always include in their regular meal.

Help your kids achieve their full potential in swimming If you have already decided on swimming as a competitive sport for your children, help them achieve their full potential and speed by feeding them the right way. Improper nutrition in athletes leads to plateaus in best times, and even sometimes cost them their dreams. There are swimmers whose times have not improved from age 14 until they are 16 to 17 years old. A simple tweak in their nutrition has helped get them out of that rut they are stuck in. Also, imagine two swimmers at age 12: Swimmer A eats the proper food at the right time while Swimmer B believes that with sports nutrition, anything goes. Swimmer A’s chances of improving is higher than that of Swimmer B because Swimmer A will most likely avoid pitfalls such as missing training because of sickness, not getting enough nutrients to fuel swimming, etc. By the time Swimmer A is 16, his or her best time has probably improved a lot cumulatively over a four year time span. Should Swimmer B decide to finally follow suit and improve food intake, Swimmer B will have to make up for lost time that he or she did not improve due to lack of proper nutrition. To sum it all up, nutrition knows no age especially if you want to perform your best at any sport. Athletes can benefit from proper food intake – the results of which can be seen in the results of their competitions and trainings.

Years in Triathlon: 5 Monica graduated Cum Laude Bachelor of Sports Science from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She is the 3-time defending Ironman 70.3 Philippines Elite Champion. Monica is married to Jojo Macalintal of TriMac Coaching and is a Facebook and Twitter fiend!

Tri-elites Monica Torres, LC Langit, and Kim Mangrobang share more than their passion for the sport by launching their own website - 3>1 (3 is greater than 1).

Photos by A nthony Y u

When and how did the three of you meet? How long have you known each other? 3>1: The three of us were virtually strangers when we had to live under one roof for a triathlon training camp at Subic Bay, Zambales, in 2008. We shared the exact same training, racing, eating and sleeping schedules. But after an awkward first two weeks, we discovered that despite our differences, we also shared the same passion for the sport, and the same energetic and fun-loving spirits! Why start a group/website? What is/are your objective/s? 3>1: This 2011, we witnessed the incredible growth of triathlon and endurance sports in the country. With several multisport events being held every weekend, and the growing awareness and support from the media, corporate sponsors and the general public, we started receiving a lot of recognition and messages of support and admiration through Facebook and other social media. Serious athletes, weekend warriors, and even total strangers started coming up to us at events. We are overwhelmed and grateful for all the support we have received this year. And this

has inspired us to share our story with you. Our message is simple: If we can do it, so can you! What can we look forward to the three of you (as triathletes)? As well as on the future of website/group? Monica: As athletes, we aim to consistently grow, improve and challenge ourselves, and become more competitive internationally. As young women, we aim to inspire people from all walks of life to find their athletes within! The tagline for the site says it all - LetzDoThiz! LC: Like what Monica said, we like to inspire athletes and encourage them to get into triathlon or any sport to have a healthy life style. One of our main goal as a group is to put comedy into it. Not everything is serious. I mean sport can be fun also. As for the future of the website, there will be more video tips or video that can make sport look easy and fun, and stories where readers can learn from our experiences and other people’s as well. Our aim for our website is to make Pinoy Triathlon community, and eventually other sport as well, check our website before they go to sleep and look at some fun facts, inspirational stories, upcoming events, and information that can help them in their sport.
