A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK Q&A with Lifetime Achievement Award Winner David Johnson What was your first coaching job? My first coaching job was as an assistant age group coach with the Mt Pleasant Pacer Swim Club in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. I was an undergraduate student and this team worked out at one of the Central Michigan University facilities. My first high school coaching position was at Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Michigan. What changes have you noticed in coaching over the years? Swimming technique has changed so how you deliver the information to swimmers is different. Swimmers have changed, thus the need to thoroughly understand what you are talking about as they often ask “Why” more often than just doing what they are asked to do. What are two things every coach should know? Training management, numerous drills to create better technique, know your individual athletes and realize whether the individual has hyperextension. If you can pass on one piece of information to yourself when you started coaching what would it be? Increase your knowledge of competitive swimming by going to clinics, going to other coach run workouts, visit college coaches and do NOT be afraid to ask questions. How would you sum up your years of coaching? I started out at the novice level and have been blessed to work with student-athletes that had high goals to attend Olympic Trials and beyond. Having athlete’s succeed to the next level makes a person very proud. As a coach, if you are a true “coach” you will have successes and each one makes you very proud to work with young individuals. How long have you coached and how many TISCA clinics have you been to? I’ve been involved in Coaching and/or Coach Administration for 45 years: Age Group Club Summer League College/University High School

A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK Senior Club Aquatic Administration How has the TISCA organization benefited you? TISCA has benefited me as a coach and as an administrator. Working with individuals from all over Texas opens your mind to many ideas that an individual may use at their school and or club situation. I’ve always felt that some of the best drills and technique work is discussed outside of the actual clinic talks. If you are not at the TISCA clinic you are not able to learn from others in this way. What are some of the highlights of your career? Coaching Ann Arbor Huron HS Boy’s Team to the Class “A” State Championship in the State of Michigan in 1988. We had many great swims and I was voted Coach of the Year at the conclusion of that Championship. As Aquatic’s Director watching NEISD swimmers and divers succeed in achieving goals at the UIL State Championships. Working as a graduate assistant coach under Gus Stager at the University of Michigan in 1977-78. Sitting in Jon Urbanchek’s office at the University of Michigan in 1987 reviewing his training methods with another terrific coach named Denny Hill (Ann Arbor Pioneer). Great relationships and terrific times with fellow coaches in the sport. Any special swimmers/divers over your career that stand out now? I would not want to leave anyone out. All of them have special qualities. What do you hope to be remembered for by your swimmers/divers? Honest, Trustworthy, Intelligent, Funny and perhaps a little crazy on deck.

A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK Q&A with Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Jennifer Mangum What was your first coaching job? Fall 1987 Lubbock ISD. I coached three high schools, Lubbock, Monterey, and Coronado, and O.L. Slaton Junior High. We dove most days in a 9 foot deep pool with one 1 meter board. We had a dryboard with spotting rig in a gym down the hall and we used that once a week. What changes have you noticed in coaching over the years? Not as many students come out for activities and stick with them. Most now want instant gratification, and do not understand that it takes time to develop and perfect a skill. They have to learn that training is hard work, and to trust the process. What are two things every coach should know? I could probably list more than two! 1. Never play favorites! Set team rules and stick to them, no matter who breaks them. If you allow someone to slide (not pay the price) because of their talent, you will ruin the cohesiveness of your team. 2. Sometimes you have to try different methods or approaches to teach different kids the same skill. Not everyone learns the same way, or improves with the exact same training. Get creative, or ask for help from experienced coaches. If you can pass on one piece of information to yourself when you started coaching what would it be? Being in a sport is so much more important to kids than just the medals or ribbons. They learn how to work as a group, how to manage their time, be self-disciplined, and develop and sustain a work ethic to achieve a goal. These are all things that they need for the future. Our job as coaches is to help them grow to be responsible young men and women.

A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK How would you sum up your years of coaching? So much JOY. I love this sport, I love sharing it with others, and I love the kids that I get the privilege to coach. It is an absolute JOY to see them have fun and succeed. How long have you coached and how many TISCA clinics have you been to? I am starting my 33rd year of coaching! I have been to 30 TISCA clinics over the years. I coached 30 years in high school, and am in my 3rd year at UTPB. How has the TISCA organization benefited you? TISCA has been a great resource to meet othcoaches, share ideas, and make lifelong friends!

er

What are some of the highlights of your career? Coaching two state champions, and many who were All-Americans and many who went on to dive in college. But my favorite memories are the day-to-day workouts and the divers who overcame their fears, faced challenges and succeeded, and especially all of the laughter. I remember so many van rides where we laughed together and that made the long drives to and from meets so much easier. Any special swimmers/divers over your career that stand out now? As a teacher, I could name my top two students ever, but as a coach that is so hard! As a coach you spend so much more time with these kids, and they all hold very special places in your heart. To name one or two of them over any others just wouldn’t be right. I will always think of them like family. What do you hope to be remembered for by your swimmers/divers? That I gave my best effort to them every day, and that I cared about them, not just as swimmers and divers, but as people.
