Success with National Student Decorator of the Year Sarah Bromley, Level 2 painting and decorating apprentice at Swindon College, painted her way to success in the grand final of the Dulux Decorator Centre’s prestigious Student Decorator of the Year competition 2015. Sarah, 26, came third place after competing against ten other students from across the UK.

Regional World Plumbing Day Winner! Aiden Brown, 17 from Swindon College was the overall Regional Plumber of the Year winner, and was delighted to win £500 worth of tools, a tool box and £50 Amazon Vouchers. Students from Wiltshire College, City of Bristol College, Gloucester College and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College all competed in timed heats with Aiden plumbing in a radiator in an amazing 26 minutes and 6 seconds, scoring an impressive 41 out of a possible 50 points.

BOSCH UK Training Event Swindon College welcomes back ex-apprentices for a continuation of professional development evening hosted by the Automotive area. The trainers from BOSCH UK, in partnership with Euro Car Parts gave training on the areas of the modern motor vehicle including smart charging, diesel and battery technology.

Following on from our 2013 Outstanding Ofsted Inspection, Swindon College is now delighted to announce that it has been identified as the Number 1 College for the delivery of Adult Skills in the country. Furthermore, Swindon College has also secured the position of the Number 1 College for Apprenticeship delivery in the South West region.*

Mike Dixon an established figure within the performing arts industry visited students of the Wilkes Academy to give them inspirational talks about his career. Graduating from Trinity College in 1979, Mike has accumulated over 25 years experience within the profession, and has worked on projects across many disciplines such as Musical Theatre, Television and Radio. More commonly known for his work within the West End, Mike has worked on productions such as: We Will Rock You, The Bodyguard, Grease and Jesus Christ Superstar to name a few.

GETTING YOU JOB READY How do you get your dream job? By making sure you have the skills

that the economy needs, our close industry links mean we know where the jobs are going to be, and how to get you ready for them. Creativity on the Cards Art students created pieces for a display entitled Twenty Five, featuring works made entirely from cardboard, which helped Swindon company GWP commemorate 25 years in the packaging trade. Swindon Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entire School of Art, at all levels, were involved in the project, including the Media Makeup students who created wedding dresses from those taking a National Diploma in Art and Design to those undertaking higher education qualifications.

Police Officer Comes in for Questioning Students on the Level 1 and 2 Public Services course were given the opportunity to put their questions to a local police officer. Police Constable Steven Caskey was questioned by the inquisitive students about his role within the police force and what responsibilities he had in keeping the community safe.

Students Build Wall for Local Community Centre Carpentry students put their skills into practice by building a partition wall at John Moulton Hall, Penhill. The hall which is for youth engagement sessions and community gatherings needed to be used more effectively to meet the needs of all the different groups. Tutors who helped the students with this project were thrilled with the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; progress and will now give them the opportunity to complete the wall as part of their work experience unit. The new dividing wall will also provide new office space for confidentiality, which was greatly needed within the centre.

Virgin Atlantic Presentation Level 2 Travel and Tourism students had a chance to speak to Rachel Lloyd from Virgin Atlantic about recruitment within the travel industry. Rachel has been working for Virgin Atlantic for several years but over the last 2 year has specialised in recruitment. She finds people suited for roles within the Virgin Atlantic contact centre where employees deal with customer enquiries. She explained what roles and responsibilities are available at Virgin Atlantic and the many different career pathways which can be undertaken within the industry.

Supercook Students Impress in Annual Rotary Competition Swindon College Professional Cookery students were tasked to prepare a three course meal in two hours for guests of the Rotary Club. After taking time to taste each of the meals, judges were asked to critique the dishes on presentation, planning, costing and healthy choices. It was a tough competition to judge as the food submitted ranged from risottos, chicken and pancetta, soups, sticky toffee pudding and Brazilian themed dishes. First place went to Jazz Devall who cooked a minestrone soup to start, courgette and herb risotto for main, with a warm sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Second place was Nikki Medcroft with third place awarded to Josh Headland. They all received an engraved Rotary Club chef knife to take with them into their future careers along with a cash prize.

Students use their Countryside Skills Foundation Learning students studying Countryside Skills were given the opportunity to clear a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Site of Special Scientific Interestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (SSSI) Status. The students volunteered to help Gloucestershire Wildlife and Geology Society at Ravenswood Hill Country Park; a 200 million year old site, by clearing away brambles and overgrown weeds. The site has been the centre of research for some time, and particularly its diverse faunas, and has hailed some fifty four species of fossil molluscs. Follow us on:

Financial Support

They are also there to challenge you, help you work harder and ensure you keep on track. They will point you in the right direction when you need extra help with careers, study techniques or recreational activities. After all, it’s not all about work; they want to help you keep a balance in your life.

You may be eligible for funding to help you continue with your learning. Eligible students who are on a course at college could receive support towards course-related costs. The support is intended to help cover the day-to-day costs associated with studying at college, such as books, equipment and travel. Throughout Year 10 and 11 you will have the opportunity to talk to the Swindon College Schools Liaison Team. The team attends Year 11 tutor groups, parent/guardian evenings and specialist post-16 events organised by local schools and you can talk to them about the courses on offer and find out about applying to college. Swindon College works in partnership with local schools and home-educated pupils as some children simply do not flourish in a traditional mainstream secondary school environment or want to have other choices in how to learn skills for life. We offer a more vocational hands on type of learning approach which some students are better suited to. We offer a range of courses including a full time GCSE programme:

We believe strongly in the value of English and Maths in helping all young people to achieve their potential. GCSE English, GCSE Maths, Functional Skills English or Functional Skills Maths are available to all full time students and will help you to express yourself, produce logical and persuasive writing or presentations, and write a successful job application. English and Maths will also help you to manage your bills and finances while at college, university or when you start work. All students who have not achieved a minimum grade C in GCSE English or Maths will continue to work towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills qualification as part of their timetable.

Why do an Apprenticeship? Companies need a skilled workforce. Apprenticeships are an excellent route for helping young people to gain the qualifications and skills needed, while at the same time earning a salary. As an added bonus, with Swindon College you will also receive all the benefits associated with being a student. What is involved? Depending on the occupation you choose, you will be expected to attend College (normally one day a week) to work towards your Technical Certificate, which covers the knowledge base for the occupation. All apprentices have a Training Co-ordinator who will guide and support you through your training. The NVQ part of your apprenticeship is assessed through your experience at work by a qualified assessor. Grades dependent, you may also be trained in Functional Skills (Maths, English and in some cases IT). How do I apply? Missed out on Higher Education? Why not join an Access to Higher Education course? Access courses are stepping stones to higher education. If you are 19 and over you can apply for an access course where you will develop the skills and experience you need to progress onto a degree level course. Attendance times are designed to fit in around the school day and other commitments you may have. Course fees may be waived for students on benefits and there may be funding available to help with travel, childcare and other costs.

Are you interested in the creative side of hair and make-up? During this course you will study a wide range of specialist make-up techniques used in Fashion, Film, Television and Theatre. You will study hairstyling and wig dressing with a clear focus on visual studies. You will also carry out historical research relating to fashion trends and cultural differences which will inform the creative work you undertake. By working with performers in a realistic working environment you will gain valuable work and industry experience. Please be aware that this may involve some evening and weekend work

This course is designed to reintroduce students aged 19+ to Art and Design practice in order to support and prepare you for progression into Art and Design Higher Education programmes. Taught in conjunction with our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, you will experience a broad spectrum of Art and Design areas, before deciding which specialist pathway to follow. The course offers you an exciting opportunity for experimentation, investigation and exploration of materials and processes through practical making, thinking and critical engagement with projects, lectures and study visits.

The diverse nature of this course will allow you to experience a broad spectrum of specialist Art and Design areas before deciding which specialist pathway to follow. The course offers you an exciting opportunity for experimentation, investigation and exploration of materials and processes through practical making, thinking and critical engagement with projects, lectures and study visits.

ABOUT:

Would you like to gain employment in Fashion Design or other Creative Industries? This course helps potential artists develop their creative talent and individual style through experimental learning, creative and professional practice, preparing them for the demands of the design industry. You will work on live briefs for fashion and textile companies and enter competitions, creating industry links for employability as well as intern opportunities to further develop your portfolio and CV.

This course offers a broad range of opportunities for those wishing to pursue a career in the online creative media world. The emphasis is on developing your own personal creative skills in disciplines relevant to current media principles and industry practice. You will study subjects relating to the planning, development and production of interactive content, work with employers or in live brief scenarios and research your own areas of interest.

Would you like to gain employment in the photographic industry? The course combines traditional film-based darkroom work as well as contemporary digital imaging techniques using the latest hardware and software. You will learn how to work in and creatively explore a multitude of environments; studio for product, still life, fashion and portraiture, on location (often working on live client briefs) exploring both countryside and urban landscape environments.

MEDIA

Level 5 HND Fashion & Textiles – 2 Years

Embroidery, Knitting, Weaving, 3D Construction, Screen Printing, Fabric Manipulation and Dyeing Techniques, Fashion Design, Trend Analysis and Branding all feature within the course. Professional practice and contextual studies will focus on historical and contemporary fashion and textiles design through visual and written studies, helping to develop analytical thinking alongside creative practice.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You need to have a minimum of 120 UCAS points from a relevant level 3 qualification. These could include GCE A Levels or a BTEC National Extended Diploma. The College welcomes mature applicants who do not meet the academic entry requirements and who have a genuine wish to succeed and can provide evidence of relevant work-related experience. All applicants will attend an interview where they will be expected to bring a portfolio of work.

The course provides tuition in specialist software such as: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Maya and Premier Pro as well other applications relevant to this area of study. Tutors offer relevant specialist knowledge and industry experience.

The course also aims to deepen your technical camera and lighting skills and is underpinned by a contextual studies programme. That explores the social significance of photography, analysing the work of leading photographers in the fields of Fine Art, Fashion, Advertising, Documentary and Photojournalism.

Level 5 HND Performing Arts (Production) Media Make Up â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2 Years ABOUT: This course equips you with a variety of skills required to work in the make-up industry. You will develop high-level skills in make-up, fashion, fantasy, body painting, prosthetics and creative hairdressing skills in fashion, fantasy and period styling. You will learn how to research for make-up design, develop concepts and ideas and bring your designs to life. Your skills will include styling a total look, developing and sourcing costumes to enhance your work. We balance creative practical lessons with professional practice sessions designed to build your skills in networking, marketing and working within the industry. You will develop a professional portfolio showing the diversity of skills youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve created throughout the programme. Our students have worked on West End shows, Cosmetic Pro teams and progressed on to make-up and fashion Degree courses. ABOUT:

This Foundation Degree is a direct response to the recognition that creativity is an increasingly valued skill actively sought by employers in the modern workplace. Teaching is focused on the critical debate and is never prescriptive, with the structure of the programme encouraging self-directed experimental development, which is both challenging and very rewarding as it supports you to ask reflective and critical questions about your own practice. On the programme you will experience a broad range of creative, communicative, theoretical and technical processes that will allow you to operate and sustain a career within the creative arts sector. You will be able to develop your own practice whilst responding to live commissions and collaborative projects.

This programme aims to support the development of independent illustrative practice by nurturing individual creative vision and expression within the field of narrative illustration. This course provides an exciting opportunity to explore Ceramics for those who either wish to start a career in a related area or maybe just wish to formalise their existing skills. The programme covers a wide range of ceramic processes with the intention to develop a wide and creative experience in studio ceramics. A progressive series of projects will develop your individual talent within a structured framework. The programme will encourage a personal approach which will be relevant to individual vocational aspirations. This programme includes a wide variety of production techniques as well as investigations into technical developments, firing strategies, glaze technology and applications.

Alongside tuition of industry-standard digital platforms, the course encourages the hands-on exploration of traditional craft skills including: bookbinding, printmaking and drawing. Level 6 BA (Hons) Graphic Design – 3 Years ABOUT: This course combines traditional print-based and contemporary digital approaches to the creation of visual communication solutions. The course’s underlying ethos is to encourage conceptual thinking and individual style through experiential learning, while preparing you for the demands of the creative industries. The in-house design agency ‘Studio215’, established in 2013 and run by students, offers excellent opportunities to participate in a variety of live briefs set by real clients. The programme also has close links to local creative employers who offer work experience and internships to further enrich the student experience. Editorial Design, Creative Typography, Logo Design and Branding, Web Design, Motion Graphics, Screen Printing, Poster Design, Advertising, Ethical Design all feature and practice is underpinned by a contextual studies programme focusing on the history of graphic design and contemporary visual culture study.

ABOUT:

Swindon College offers the Foundation Degree in Business, Management and Communications in partnership with Oxford Brookes University so you can gain full access to both facilities. The Foundation Degree in Business, Management and Communications is designed for students who are interested in a career in marketing, finance, human resources or general management. The programme can be undertaken part time over three years or full time over two years.

The programme is designed to enable students to top up their Foundation Degree in Business, Management and Communications to a full BA (Hons) degree. The BA (Hons) is a work-based degree and as such lectures are concentrated on one day per week, enabling students to work and combine private study to suit their own personal commitments.

This course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the computing sector. Entrants to the programme should normally meet one of the following three sets of requirements: • A current role in an appropriate workplace setting, and a line manager’s letter of support and recommendation (aminimum of two years relevant work experience is normally required). • A minimum of one pass at A Level or 6-unit Vocational A-level, plus three passes at GCSE (grades A-C), or O-level (grades A-C), or equivalent, normally including maths and English. • A National Certificate or Diploma or other equivalent qualifications, such as GNVQ/NVQ or other Level 3 vocational qualifications, plus three passes at GCSE (grades A-C), or O-level (grades A-C), or equivalent, normally including maths and English.

ABOUT: This course is aimed at those working or intending to work as AAT qualified accountants. This programme is the final part of a three-stage, national framework of competence based education and training scheme offered by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the largest dedicated professional body for qualified accounting technicians.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students will normally have completed AAT Intermediate Stage (Level 3).

Level 7 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) ABOUT: The course informs and consolidates professional practice in teaching mature and young adults. A variety of assessment methods are used and you will be expected to keep a reflective diary, take part in action and practitioner research, write essays, give presentations based on research findings and be observed when teaching.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You are required to have a minimum Level 3 qualification, which may be a vocational qualification in your chosen subject. GCSE English and maths are required. Level 4 City and Guilds 2396 Erection and Verification of Electrical Installations ABOUT: This course is designed for fully qualified electricians who would like to learn, develop and practise the skills required in designing and scoping electrical installations. The course is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and testing process. It addresses, in particular, the implications of the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installations.

The Access to Health Care Professions course is for adults who have limited academic qualifications, but who would like to progress on to a degree course or on to professional training. The course is studied full-time over one academic year and includes a number of subjects necessary for successful completion of the Diploma and entry to higher level study in Nursing, Midwifery, ODP, Speech Therapy, physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and other health professions. ABOUT: Our aim is to develop your knowledge and skills, which will enhance your role within care and enable you to document the evidence of the learning experience for your own career development. ABOUT: The course is designed for practitioners currently working in early years settings who wish to build upon the practical work they undertake in their role, broadening their knowledge of wider practice in early years and gaining knowledge of the underpinning theory which supports practice today. Students will examine theories of child development, play and learning (including the role of the adult) and appreciating international and cultural perspectives. The course aims to develop the student’s professionalism through greater understanding of policy, regulatory and legislative frameworks and recognising the role of other agencies in working for and with children and families. The programme is delivered using a variety of techniques including lectures, seminars, and workshops and is supported by web-based materials.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Entrants should normally have a minimum of one of the following: • An appropriate A Level or vocational A Level • NVQ Level 3 or other appropriate vocationally-related NQF Level 3 qualification • An advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Early Years or another appropriate subject. The first year develops understanding of children and young people’s learning, particularly English and maths and how people learn.

The Honours year will be based on, and extend, the academic skills and pedagogy of the Foundation Degree programme. Students continue within their Early Years work settings and will prepare for management and leadership roles. Units reflect current trends and enable learners to develop a broad understanding of Early Years care and education in a variety of contexts.

In the second year, students learn about wider issues such as supporting individual needs, mentoring and behaviour management.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: This is a work-based course and applicants must be employed or volunteer in a school or college. Your employer must be willing to support your training needs. Your Head Teacher or line manager must also supply a reference. Students should have some experience and a minimum Level 3 qualification. Applicants under 21 will also need one of the following: • An A Level or a six unit vocational A Level and three GCSEs, including maths and English A-C • National Certificate or Diploma • International Baccalaureate 25 points • Other equivalent qualifications. The Access Diploma Sport is for adults who have no or few academic qualifications but would like to proceed onto a degree course or professional training. We offer a range of Entry Level Life Skills programmes which are suited to students who would benefit from high levels of individual educational support. All courses are nationally accredited by external awarding bodies. Students who attend these courses benefit from the skills of a specialist team, as well as having the opportunity to enjoy the facilities on offer at a local Further Education college. You will be taught in small group sizes and have access to additional support based on your individual needs. All programmes are offered by experienced and innovative staff who will give you the best possible learning experience, in a friendly and supportive environment.

The main aim is to provide opportunities for students to develop the skills that will help them with gaining either full time, part time or supported employment or to progress on to an Entry 3 or Level 1 college programme. Your progression will be based on your specific needs and this will be discussed with you and your support team at college. Depending on your assessed level there is opportunity to study with us for 1, 2, or 3 years.

Getting the right learning programme is really important and we will work with you in order to determine what is right for you. You may attend for one, two or three years depending on the type and range of qualifications that are best for you.

These courses are designed to give you the skills that employers want, as well as allowing you to try out a number of career options.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

We will support you to improve skills such as confidence, assertiveness, communicating in different settings, making choices and decisions, managing money, keeping yourself safe and working as part of a team. You will also have the opportunity to learn practical subjects such as IT, cooking, shopping, household tasks and using public transport. This is a small, safe environment which supports the most vulnerable learners.

ABOUT: The programme is made up of two one year courses and you will be interviewed, and advised on which programme will best suit you and your individual requirements. You may attend either one or both years, allowing you to try out different work based subjects, develop social skills and build confidence that will help you to move on to work, further study or training.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will have the opportunity to gain a number of qualifications at Entry Level with targets set to meet your ability. You will undertake communication, numeracy and IT work alongside experiencing practical skills such as: introduction to construction skills, light vehicle, motorcycle & bicycle maintenance, introduction to hairdressing, caring for children and subjects that improve confidence and social skills such as art, drama, horticulture and sport.

This programme may suit students who wish to improve their confidence or their basic skills or for those who have not decided which career pathway they want to follow. If successful you could progress through the levels of the Skills for Further Learning and Employment programme or progress on to other courses following your career choice. You could also gain an apprenticeship or look for employment

XLR8

ABOUT: Did you find school challenging? Do you lack confidence within a learning environment? Can’t find a job because you need more qualifications? Then the XLR8 programme could be for you. XLR8 is a flexible programme, with strong support, allowing you the opportunity to develop study and personal skills through setting and working towards individual targets.

WHAT MIGHT I STUDY? You will have access to a range of subjects such as: • Carpentry • Brickwork • Hair and Beauty • Hospitality • Motor Vehicle and many more. You will be given the opportunity to gain a range of short qualifications, such as: CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme), Food Hygiene and Functional Skills that will help you to progress on to full time programmes, apprenticeships or employment. You do not need any qualifications to join this programme but any you have will be taken into consideration to decide your level of entry.

Step 1 - Apply Apply online at www.swindon.ac.uk or fill out an application form and send it to: Student Services, Swindon College, North Star Avenue, Swindon, SN2 1DY. Alternatively, if you have filled out your application form with your secondary school, give it to your careers advisor there and they will pass them on to us at Swindon College.

Step 4 – Enrolment and Welcome Days You will be invited in to an Enrolment Day in June or July. This is where you will be enrolled as a Swindon College student. After you have enrolled you will then be invited to attend a Welcome Day, where you get the chance to meet your tutors and your class mates.

Step 2 – Receive an Interview Date Within four weeks of receiving your application we will write to you to inform you of your interview date and time. If you can’t attend an interview for any reason please let us know; we can rearrange to a time that suits you. Your parents/carers are welcome to attend with you.

Step 5 – Grades Check In the middle of August you will receive your exam results where you will then come in to college to finalise your enrolment. Don’t worry if you do not achieve the results you hoped for, come and talk to us as we can offer plenty of alternatives.

Step 3 – Your Interview Come into college and have your interview with a tutor from your chosen subject area. Some subject ask you to complete an assessment task at interview but we will let you know before whether to expect this.

Step 6 – You Start Your Course!

You will be given an offer to start your course in September depending on your GCSE grades.
