MEMORIZING

Life is too short, but I will stay strong.

Cemetery Space Design Location: Guangzhou Date: 2012.9~2012.12 Tutor: Li Yun Key words: triangle shape, simplicity, memorial space

On November 13th,2012, my 90-year-old grandma eventually left us forever. To the dead, death may be a relief, but to me it is just a kind of lingering sorrow imprint. After the funeral, I had been hanging my head in sorrow. Since I was born, I lived with her for over 20 years. She is the most important person in my life, and never will anyone replace her. I feel like that we have a strong connection between each other, but now it is broken. After consideration, I decided to create a personal cemetery space, a garden-style one, for her, hoping she will find her heaven here. This works is for memorizing, for gratitude, and for love.

modern cemetery design

In China, the design of modern cemetery always stimulates famous ancient imperial mausoleum. The completely axisymmetric type and representative sculptures in superlarge size are excessively gorgeous and solemn.

sculptures obelisk symmetric axes

In Europe and the United States, cemetery tour is a common activity. It naturally integrates into public life. Not only can people memorize the dead here, but they can also explore the dusty history and looking for the peace of mind.

The atmosphere in graveyard is not necessarily dark, depressing and gloomy. Rural cemetery in Europe was deeply af fected by English landscape design thoughts. It is far away from the city, quiet, and it used a large amount of natural elements to create a peaceful space. It looks more like a natural park than a cemetery.

Cemetery landscape design should be simple, pure, and low-key, in place of being gorgeous site. Less is more, and I think simple line can even touch the deep part in people’s heart.

After consideration, a triangle is decided to be adopted as the design element of land, in which the line is simple and is suitable for mood expression. Except for design in visual, according to the needs of five senses, I will match plants and space together to create different space feelings.

Thinking

Thinking

But what do I think about cemetery? I deeply believe that cemetery is a special place of a wide variety of interaction—man with the dead, man with nature, the dead with nature and also the dead with dead. When people stand in cemetery, apart from sorrow, they will feel peaceful and everything seems to be very simple.

Waterside plats form a flow cur ve, spreading into the interior. The top of architecture is the shape of strip hollowed-out. When the sunlight down, dreamy light and shadow effects will be seen in interior, seeming like beautiful memories in mind.

The water flows from the main space to square, splits into two lines, and finally converges into the pool in corner. The whole design represents the process from the difficulty to accept to eventually put down towards my grandmother’s departure. The inner torment is expressed by the extent of flow and calm of water.

Vision, the largest proportion of five senses, influences landscape directly. In my design, I mainly create different visual feelings by means of the special shape of building block and colour changes.

Smell is one of the significant elements in landscape. Combined with the stimulation of mind, it can express happiness, sadness and other feelings directly.I choose to place some fragrant plants in the cemetery, such as sakura, Zephyr and bamboo, so that to calm down people's mind and create a comfortable pure environment.

Zephyr lily, with white flowers and beautiful green leaves, is such an elegant plant that makes people feel quiet and peaceful. I put it in the highest central place of the cemetery. When the wind blows out, flowers, green leaves as well as tiny bits of sound make the whole environment becomes very close and mild.

Bamboo symbolizes the noble and kind of humanity, but its sound is very gripping and sad.

When the leaves of Chinese parasol fall, we all know that fall comes. It is a symbol of lost and sorrow in China. In full court, I just planted one parasol tree, which locates in the center of cemetery. The tall trunk and withered leaves symbolize my broken heart after I lost my grandma.

07

The blossom season of sakura is very short, but the flowers are magnificent. I put it independently in the corner of "suffering walk". The bright pink blossom and depressing blue road form a great visual impact. The petals of sakura are very soft, and they are easy to fall in the wind. Even if you want to catch the tender, it’s still gone, just as the gorgeous and short lifetime.

In landscape appreciation, sound is an important element, and soundscape plays a vital role in our feelings. In order to create attractive soundscape, I used different plants with special sound meaning, and according to their features I place them in an inappropriate space.

In common, taste has to combine with behavior and diet. To focus on cemetery design, taste is not inappropriate to be functioned so that I didn’t take it into account. Purslane is such a plant and herb with strong vitality. I place it at the entrance. The bright red flower combining with the pink wall represents the beginning of life.

Five Senses Analysis

Five Senses Analysis

Five senses include vision, hearing, smell, taste and tactus. In general, the main function of landscape d e s i g n i s u s u a l l y to s e r ve t h e visual requirements. However I think people’s feelings should be comprehensive and multinational, which means that we should combine five senses together so that people can experience different feelings.

Tacus is a direct sense. We usually use hands, skin and other tactile organ to appreciate landscape. Through such a real touch, the landscape becomes humanized and more intimate.

Rock & Roll—Kindergarten Design Location: Eastern Industrial District, Shenzhen Date: 2013.02~2013.05 Tutor: Li Yun Key words: up and down, swinging frame

The site is located in the eastern industrial district of Shenzhen. It situates in the northeast of Oct East, to the west of Qiaocheng East Road and to the south of Qiaoxiang Road. The land now is a wide large green space, near which there’re many cultural exhibition halls. The reason why kindergarten places here is, on the one hand, to serve the high-rise residential area, and on the other hand, is to extend the influence of creative culture to the kids.

Culture

OCT-LOFT OCT-LOFT, the creative culture park, is a big creative studio formed by the old factory buildings in the eastern industrial zone. It attracts various creative industries, such as design, photography, animation creation, and also some restaurants, lounges, retails and cafés.

Commercial

The commercial area The commercial area includes a youth hostel,a supermarket, and many selling stores along the street. It can be seen that most commercial area are overlap with OCT-LOFT, where there're design shops, restaurants and cafés.

Industry

Site Analysis

Introduction

With a total area of 4.8 hectares, the site is located in Wenchong River Wetland Park Of Huangpu District ,which is just next to Huangpu District Court, and it is the planning construction site of Huangpu children’s park. The Wechong River Wetland Park forms a long and narrow island in Wuchong with the obvious hint space sequence on the land. In the beginning, I had searched a lot of information about children’s park design. However, I found that their design style is almost the same and boring, in the meanwhile there are little opportunities for parents to enjoy the playtime with their children in the park. In my opinion, children’s park is not only a joyful paradise for children, but it is also an outdoor study hall. Therefore, I creatively combine the idea of garbage classification in my park design, hoping this innovative education element could bring a new funny experience for parents and children.

Environmental train

KIDS INFLUENCE?

+ Garbage classification is a hot news topic in Guangzhou. In recent years, government repeatedly initiated greening activities in order to arouse public concern for the environment.

According to the survey reports of Yangcheng Evening News in mid-April 2012, the numbers of citizens who warmheartedly joined in the activities was of a high degree.

Although active participation was high, less than 20% people truly grasped garbage classification. Most of them mentioned that it was too complicated to classify all the garbage.

I doubt that it’s too late for adults to learn garbage classification nowadays, either physically or mentally, but on the contrary it is a goodtime for children to be the leader.

Children own high learning abilities, and the garbage classification has been into school life gradually. If changing them from texts to games, and parents participating in games at the same time, the effect of 1+1>2 will be quite successful.

But the problem is how to get rid of the bad impressions of garbage in people’s mind and make it possible to be accepted. Therefore, I decided to focus on 3 par ts considering the combination between waste sorting and fun, and try to make it work.

Based on the working procedure of garbage classification, the environmental train can give people a whole new experience to know how waste sorting works. It connects every part of the park, and each train station represents a procedure.

23

The control point of the park

+ On July 20th,2012, a children’s drama was shown on in Guangzhou Opera House. It was the first drama with a theme of environmental protection and garbage classification, but it did amaze every audience that night. The lovely kid images subverted the public’s perception of trash. After the show, parents said the funny form of trash family made them more aware of waste sorting, and easy to distinguish the difference of each kind of trash.

KIDS ARE LEADERS

Under the rebuilding of Australia artists, Japanese Wuzhou Factory changed the code feeling of the garbage incinerator, and it became a fairy tale mechanical factory. At the weekends, parents with children visit the factory, learn the recycling and classification of garbage in close-distance, and also know how to generate electricity in burning from games. Parents say, such a base provides places for children both to play and learn, and children even master it better than themselves.

WALL-E is a character of the Disney movie "WALL-E". In the movie, environmental destruction is horrible and all left on earth are trashes. I hope WALL-E can remind people of the significance of environmental protection, so I make it become the most complex and highest space in the park.

Landscape of the eastern park

The landscape of the site is quite terrible. As the site is still in construction, many plants are withered, and there's no facilities there. Hardly will visitors come to here.

The garden uses Lingnan Garden design style maturely, adopts a large number of Lingnan local plants, and composes into a scene with skills such as borrowed scenery and obstructive.

30 Site Analysis

Introduction

The site is located in the west part of Gaungzhou Pearl River Park, which belongs to the third-phase construction project of the park. Built in 2000, Pearl River Park situates in the CBD of Guangzhou Zhujiang new town center and has a total area of 29 hectares. It is a beautiful park characterized by Lingnan Garden, however, the park doesn’t have sufficient space for human activities, and the feature of Lingnan Garden only stays on plant landscape. In order to cope with this problem, Guangzhou government decide that the land will be proposed to build a Lingnan Garden exhibition in order to provide a large public space of enjoying leisure time and knowing Lingnan Garden culture for citizens. Besides, the exhibition will be positioned as new Lingnan Garden culture base in Guangzhou to increase the Lingnan culture atmosphere of Pearl River Park.

Landscape of the site

Yu Yin Garden Yu Yin Garden is one of the famous gardens in Guangdong, well-known for its unique style of small and exquisite.

Indoor landscape

Landscape

White Swan Hotel Looking from the outside, it is a completely modern architecture, but inside it integrates Chinese traditional garden elements and Lingnan traditional garden design essence. Its main landscapes are rockeries and falls, forming a different Lingnan scene.

In Ancient times, architectures are always the main part of Lingnan Gardens, but they are always low and hide in yards.

Building

To change the relationship between landscape and building, I permeate the garden space into the interior of architecture to break the barrier between nature and architecture and make them more close and confluent. Outdoor Landscape

Shh, Silent!! 31

With geometric garden layout, the whole garden is divided into east yard and west yard with the connection of bridge. East yard is a square water yard, and west yard is octangle one with an octangle water yard in the middle.

All the water yards are geometric and peaceful, which highlights the quiet atmosphere of the entire space.

The buliding is in square and spindle shapes, totally a modern style. It looks like a white swan spreading her wings and flying towards the sky.

active space Water yard is an essential element in Lingnan Gardens. Most of them are designed into a geometrical figure. The water is usually in stationary state to highlight the feel of peace and kind.

inactive space

T h e p o o l i s s t i l l g e o m e t r i c a l . H oweve r, combined with the dynamic and static space of architecture, using comparison of dynamic and static setting off each other, water yards with different characteristics are designed in the architecture.

The outlook of hotel is a symmetric form, but the lobby and atrium are managed flexibly by oblique line, which breaks the balance and forms interesting tension.

The water yard inside the hotel is free curve form, which is different from the traditional one in Lingnan Gardens design, and the entire space is very lively.

Although in modern times, Lingnan Gardens were influenced by western landscape design, but it still insists the Chinese traditional architecure style, especially the roof form—gable and hip roof, round ridge roof, flush gable roof

I decide to combine the round ridge roof with modern straight roof so that to reserve the traditional Lingnan Garden culture, but also make some break through.

This is my favourite photo that I took it in Dubai this August. On the stage there was a male dancer. He was dressed in a heavy clothes with various little lamps. Everybody cheered for him as he kept dancing, circling and performing till the music was off. His dance was so moving and I saw his sweat on his face and neck, but also his smile through the whole show. At that moment in the deepest of my heart I knew that he didn't dance for us. He danced for himself. It's not easy to insist something so long, not to mention a whole life. Once my friend told me that never choose your hobby as your job because the burden would swallow your enthusiasm one day, but I sill insist my love for landscape architecture. When I saw the dancer, all I couldn't get rid of in my head was his smile and sweat. He didn't give up his enthusiasm in his dance, even though life is rough. He looks like a elegant butterfly dancing in the sky. People appreciate the delicacy of butterfly, but not much will remember how hard it had struggle for living. If it's not strong enough to break through the worm chrysalis, it will never see the sunshine then. After my grandma died, I had been thinking about time and life for a long while. People are so weak to do anything when they face the death, but I know life is too short to waste time. Therefore I changed the sorrow into power pushing myself to face the rough. I started to think emotionally on my design and I had devoted much more attention to my works in the mean while to cope with the work of my college organization. In order to seize more time, I got up at 5:30 am fighting against my sleepiness and laziness everyday, and never had I given up on any details in my life. Eventually one year passed, and I luckily became the first in my academic works of my junior year. I still remembered all the struggles that I made, but now I feel very peaceful. My grandma's death did change me a lot. The most changable thing is that I don't avoid getting up early in the morning any more, and I really feel thankful and happy that I can see the sunrise everyday, as living is wonderful. When I saw the dancer that night, as if I saw my shadow self. Things didn't kill me makes me strong. Maybe I am a larva now, but I TRUELY believe that one day I will become a beautiful butterfly, dancing in my life with smile, enthusiasm and success. Last but not the least, THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING ME. I am so honored to share my story to you.
