Race Reviews

Boggart Hole Cross Country, Saturday 4th December 2010

Men’s Team: Carl Price, Mark Birchall, Steve Doxey, Darren Russell, Chris Lomax, Dan Bird, Paul Rutherford, John Pickup, Steve Hart & Paul Shier. Women’s Team: Lauren Marsden, Kate Cammish, Rebecca Mills & Sharen Roberts. Support came from: Dan‟s Family & Emma (who was injured for this one) On this cold, cold day it was the women first to run this altered course. (This distance was about the same but a particularly nasty wooded section had been scrapped for safety reasons). The ground was hard and icy so spikes were a must. They set of for their two laps around the field then into the main course itself. Lauren was first to come through and onto her second lap, followed by Kate and Rebecca (colour now coming back into her cheeks after a night on the pop) then Sharen. All were running well and putting in strong runs, but we could not afford any drop outs as we only just had a team. As they disappeared for the second lap it was time for the men to prepare themselves for their run. Gloves, spikes, two tops, hats, running tights (optional) all sorted - the only thing left was to pray. Boggart Hole Clough in my view is the hardest of the cross country courses I have ran so far. Luckily the cold weather had frozen most of the muddy parts, making it a bit easier than the previous two years. With the women‟s team all safely back, the starting gun sounded out for the men to set of on the first of their three laps. With Steve and Paul for company (Paul was a Boggart virgin) I took the first lap steady, nothing too bad with a mixture of ice, mud, road and trail. The second lap came with vocal support from the women‟s team, Emma and Dan‟s family. Although it was hard, I was enjoying the run and was even picking up some places. As I approached the wooded section near to the end of the second lap, the lead runners (top 5) lapped me, running at a pace I can only dream of. So to the third and final lap in which I spent nearly all of it trying to catch a runner who had gone past me on my second lap. Seeing fellow Swinton runners at various cross over points on the course is always a boost so just nearing the finish I managed one last effort and caught him. Race done and all safely back we changed into warmer clothes. Well done to all and look forward to Woodbank Park and the HILL OF DEATH.

Xmas Night Out Report’s

Men’s Christmas Night Out, Saturday 4th December Due to repeated requests by one of the clubs eager little runners code named Murf I‟ve agreed to document the lads night out. I Paul David Shier herby swear that the following information is true and correct (given a certain give value of the word true) We arrived in town around the given time of 19:30 after spending the day watching Adam conquering the Boggarts hole! We met the lads in the bar, myself and Adam; Mike sadly couldn‟t join us as he said he had a headache which was an odd reason considering nobody had suggested sex to him but anyway I digress.. Compliments were instantly raised on Rics fantastic shirt, pictures are available online ladies. The rest of the evening was a furious discourse of ideas, political and up to the second social commentary interjected with brief sojourns to the bar for a half or lager top refill, everything in moderation and of course as a serious sports guild we took this part very seriously.. “cough” Rumours that I walked the wrong way home for about half a mile and that Adam lost the powers of speech by about 1am are exactly that Ladies... Just Rumours. This is all true! Happy now Murf?

Xmas Night Out Report’s

Ladies Christmas Night Out, Saturday 11th December When I should have been loyally wading my way around Bogart Hole this month, I was in fact attending a „Tudor Christmas‟ event at Little Moreton Hall. Quite honestly Boggart Hole would have been warmer and more comfortable. By the time we left my toes were so cold I was attempting to walk exclusively on my heels to keep the balls of my feet off the icy flagstones, I haven‟t done that strange waddling walk since primary school. Anyway, despite the cold we did stand and listen to Piva – a quartet playing renaissance music on reproduction renaissance instruments, not exactly my usual taste, but very informative. During one of the breaks whilst they were frantically trying to warm up very cold and so sharp recorders and cor anglais, they explained about Elizabethan Christmas traditions. Apparently the Elizabethans would appoint a „Lord of Misrule‟ who was responsible for ensuring that everyone had a good time throughout the twelve days of Christmas. At SRC, I think we have our own Lord and Lady of Misrule in the shape of Adam and Lauren. The Ladies‟ night in particular was co-ordinated by Lauren with military precision. Preparations started in September and invitations were circulated by all known routes, face -book, forum and word of mouth. Once participants were finalised we all received our top secret instructions, which I can now reveal included orders to buy a secret Santa present for no more than £2. This command was actually quite challenging to fulfil. On the night I belatedly thought to check where I needed to be, good job too, I had forgotten we were going into central Manchester, but no problem, I googled the Olive Press and realised that the A34 went all the way from Congleton to Deansgate – Easy!! (NOT!) The problem came when the A34 dropped me in central Manchester, after dark, with traffic crawling and a multitude of kamikaze pedestrians. After looping past and round my target car park, I eventually gave up, dumped the car near Victoria station and started to route march up Deansgate as fast as stilettos would allow. After ten minutes marching up and down, I stood, feet throbbing, clutching my scrap of paper ringing Lauren in the hope that she could talk me in. No chance, Lauren was at the desired location but had no idea how she got there. Seconds later when my phone went again, I thought maybe Lauren had worked out where I was, but no, it was my dad, who rather surreally wanted to know if I had access to a printer! For the first time in my life I was glad to see a burly bouncer, who turned out to be a real gentleman and pointed to a street yards away from where I was actually standing. The car park saga meant that I‟d missed out on the warm up drinks, but I did reach the Olive Press in time to sit down before my chair was whisked away. Since the gentlemen seem quite reticent about the goings on at their night out, I shan‟t divulge even the essence of a hint of the gossip that went on that night. Suffice to say that I might have missed out on the warm up drinks, but others hadn‟t. The SRC Ladies were a stunning bunch, I was not alone in having moments of non-recognition as I struggled to picture the elegant creature in front of me in running tights, splattered with mud and dripping with sweat. Dinner was pretty good by pre-Christmas mass produced restaurant standards, well done Lauren or whoever suggested the venue. Wine, Baileys, Gin,..... and Tequila flowed freely. The revelation that Carol had never tried a slammer before, of course meant that the deed had to be done, her face was a picture – I‟m hoping someone got that picture!

Xmas Night Out Report’s

Ladies Christmas Night Out, Saturday 11th December

Carol first ever slammer, that’s my girl ! Secret Santa's seem to have been very successful, I can’t believe that someone managed to find Ron Hill running gloves, even in that lurid shade of fuchsia, for only £2. Despite my abhorrence of pink they have already come in useful several times thank you Santa. Sharen also received a colourful present, I assume she will be turning up with bright red glittery nails on Sunday at Woodbank Park. As the evening wound on and mere mortal revellers wandered home, the SRC Ladies showed their stamina and determination to make the staff earn their bonuses. When I gave up some time Saturday morning, the hard core were just settling down to start the serious drinking. I try not to think about the walk back to the car, it was reminiscent of a certain half-marathon in June. Thanks to Lauren for organising a great night out and to SRC Ladies for all the laughs.

Xmas Party Report’s

Children’s Christmas Party, Sunday 12th December Could a group of 17 0-10 year olds possibly have a better Christmas do than the adults had already enjoyed? Answer: YES! They partied in style – but not without a few hitches along the way… Back in October, we approached the cricket club and booked the room for this party. Entertainer was also booked and planning began. On the Wednesday before the party, Jon happened to mention it to one of the cricket club members and it turned out that the room had never actually been booked. No problem – it was available so it would be fine for us to use it. On the actual day, Mark put a post on the forum saying the cricket club had no idea about the party. Now, I‟m not one for getting stressed (honest!) but I did start to have a little panic. Anxiously arriving at the club an hour before the party was due to start, Adam and I were met by the cricketers again saying they didn‟t know about it. Thankfully, they were winding me up – possibly not the best time to choose to do that! So, we had a room. Buffet was set up and tables decorated. The room looked very festive as the cricketers had put up lovely decorations. Sharen and Rebecca arrived in full elf attire. All we needed was an entertainer and children… At 2.50 pm, Magic Mark arrived apologising profusely for being late. His excuse – Santa had blocked him in at his last party. I didn‟t feel I ought to ask any more questions. He set up quickly and at 3pm we were ready and 17 children were treated to games, magic, dancing and singing. The entertainment was excellent; the adults possibly enjoyed it more than the children! We took a quick break to eat and pull crackers, then it was back on the dance floor for more festive fun. Meanwhile, in Lapland, Santa was frantically searching his phone book for a replacement. You see, Santa‟s daughter was at the party and he was a little concerned that she would recognise him, especially with his Geordie accent (yes, they do speak Geordie in Lapland!) So at the last minute a new (fully CRB checked) Santa was called upon and did us proud, Amazingly, all of the children got presents that they really wanted – Olivia Russell was particularly impressed with Santa‟s intuition! All in all, the party was deemed a great success. Thanks to everyone involved – SRC for help with money, cricket club for the room and bar staff, everyone who helped with organisation (especially Emma and Steve), our elves, Santa, Magic Mark and anyone who helped in any way. The biggest thank you has to be to the children who all had a wonderful party and were extremely well behaved. Lauren

And a big thank you to Lauren for organising such a fantastic event. See the video to watch the ladies having a good time at the “Children‟s party”

Race Report’s

Goa 5K, Sunday 19h December

Realising that having a holiday means more time for running I started looking to see if there were any races on while I was away. I soon found that on the 19 th December Vasco sports club in Goa was holding a half marathon and a 5k fun run. After chickening out of the half for fear of collapsing in the heat I opted to run the 5k. The venue was on Baina Beach in Vasco da Gama and I arrived there as the sun was rising. There was a band playing, hundreds of participants and a definite carnival mood going on. The run was due to start at 8.00am but true to Indian time keeping 8.00am came and went with no sign of a start time. The half had started over an hour earlier and as the first of the runners finished it was time to start the 5k. Managing to get towards the front of the crowd I was soon amidst a rabble of locals as they all jostled to get ahead of the pack. The starting gun went and for at least the first 200m It was total mayhem as everyone was barging through and pushing. It was just a case of keeping on your feet and trying not to stand on anybody else. Leaving the beachfront we headed inland along the closed streets. The mob of runners soon thinned as the non runners started to flag and slowed to walk. The route was simply out for a measured distance, u-turn and back the way you came. The streets were lined with spectators all cheering, bands playing and the occasional water station. The return leg of the run was much better, plenty of space to run in and even a bit of competitiveness. The local men are obviously not used to women running faster than them and I noticed a few of them up their pace as I was passing them. At the finish we were ushered down onto the beach were we were given bottles of water, orange juice and a box containing sandwiches, a banana, an apple and a savoury Indian snack. As the cost of the race entry was the grand total of 100 rupees, equating to approx £1.50 then it was worth the fee alone just for the picnic. So would I recommend this race to anybody else? Definitely! So when you‟re off on your hols this year, pack your Swinton top and search out a local race and enter it.

Race Report’s

Ribble Valley 10K, Monday 27th December

Mike, Paul and myself set of for this festive 10k run. All was well and we were nearly at our destination when by chance I checked Facebook via my phone.

Race cancelled. Report ends Emma cheers

Ads.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE RIBBLE VALLEY 10k RACE DIRECTOR: "Unfortunately the Ribble Valley 10k Road Race incorporating the 2010 Northern 10k Road Championships had to be cancelled at 8:10am this morning - 27th December. The course had been inspected on each of the four days prior to the race and deemed to be safe. At 5:45am on the morning of the Race it was still clear and safe. We were then hit with a period of snow, which covered the race route. Within an hour, the road surfaces were covered with a combination of snow and slush. In addition, a milk tanker had been stranded at the bridge just over half a mile into the run, because it couldn't get up the first hill on the race, even though it had tried three times to do so. Taking into account the state of the race course, the part blockage of the road at such an early stage and the continuing weather conditions, the decision was taken to call the race off in the interests of ensuring the safety of all athletes, officials and public. The Local Authority Event Safety Advisory Group were also contacted and they endorsed the decision to call off the event. We immediately got the information out on www.ukresults.net, local radio stations, Facebook and straight telephone calls to officials and competitors. We will be taking a decision on rescheduling shortly, so please keep and eye out on www.ukresults.net and www.blackburnharriers.co.uk. Thank you for all your patience and understanding and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused you. Yours in sport Tony Wood, Race Director.

Better Health and Fitness for 2011 Hi, Iâ€&#x;m Marade Baker and I have been a member of Swinton Running Club since February of this year. For those of you that donâ€&#x;t recognise my name, I am the one at the back puffing furiously trying to keep up! In July of this year, I started my own health and nutrition business. The products are sourced from a market leader in this sector called Forever Living. Based in the USA, Forever is the largest grower, manufacturer and distributor of aloe vera and beehive products in the world. All the products are produced in a pesticide, herbicide and GM free environment and are all totally natural. Many of the products are aimed at the sports market, providing energy and stamina and helping the body maintain optimum fitness and sporting potential. It is these products that I want to give you a little more information about: Did you know that you could drink aloe vera?

Whether going to the gym, taking part in a sport as a hobby or as something more serious, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle is the essential foundation for achieving optimum sports performance. Although taken as a drink, aloe vera is better described as a liquid dietary food. It contains over 75 natural nutrients which provide a rich supplement to healthy nutrition. Drinking aloe vera assists digestion and absorption of nutrients while adding vitamins, minerals and amino acids to the diet, promoting good wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. In addition to our range of aloe vera drinks, there is also Forever Pomesteen Power, which is full of antioxidants helping defend against free radicals created during exercise.
